Does Mindset Matter: The Perceptions Pre-Licensure Nursing Students Have Regarding Mindset And Academic Success, Amanda Sue Schuster
Does Mindset Matter: The Perceptions Pre-Licensure Nursing Students Have Regarding Mindset And Academic Success, Amanda Sue Schuster
Dissertations
Nursing programs need to graduate more students to increase the potential number of practicing nurses and help the nursing shortage. However, with high attrition rates, nursing programs are looking for ways to promote student success. Many factors lead to students not finishing a nursing program and nurse educators need to develop innovative ways to help students succeed. Identifying characteristics that make students successful is key to reducing attrition rates. One characteristic that a nurse educator can identify in students is a growth mindset. Mindset is formed by students’ beliefs and experiences, by having a growth mindset, one believes their intelligence …

Ensuring Successful Bond Referendums In Rural South Carolina School Districts: Key Strategies Employed By Superintendents, David Fallaw
Ensuring Successful Bond Referendums In Rural South Carolina School Districts: Key Strategies Employed By Superintendents, David Fallaw
All Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of the strategies of superintendents that lead to the successful passage of referendums within small, rural districts in South Carolina. Federal, state and local revenue streams make up the majority of funding for operating expenses for districts in South Carolina. For capital projects, however, the majority of districts must rely on local funding. The primary method to acquire the needed revenue is through a referendum which can be a costly and time-consuming process that moves the focus of school and district leadership from teaching and learning to pursuing funding …
Exploring Mechanisms Of Chemical Resistance In Xanthomonas Arboricola Pv. Pruni And Strategies To Mitigate Resistance And Improve Disease Control, Milan Panth
All Dissertations
Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni (XAP) is a phytopathogenic bacterium that causes bacterial spot of peach. It causes spotted lesions on leaves and fruit, leading to early defoliation and unmarketable fruit, respectively. The pathogen can overwinter in twig cankers, which serve as the primary initial inoculum source for the next season’s leaf and fruitlet infection. The current disease management practice mainly relies on routine application of chemical bactericides containing copper or oxytetracycline (OTC) in the growing season. However, disease incidence can still be high despite chemical control measures in warm, rainy seasons.
Frequent applications of copper and OTC in United …
Nanostructured Silicon Meta-Waveguides And Surfaces For Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction, Saddam Gafsi
Nanostructured Silicon Meta-Waveguides And Surfaces For Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction, Saddam Gafsi
All Dissertations
In this study, we tackle the challenge of light-matter interaction engineering and local field enhancement using various silicon photonic platforms based on three different approaches. (i) The first approach is based on boundary condition engineering where we present and show through simulation and experimental results, a silicon nanodisk “diabolo” configuration able to support significant local field enhancement levels in the range ~102 to 104 in the high index medium through proper structural modifications at the nanoscale. We show that the presented optical behavior is consistent with the anapole modes characterized by the observed near-field enhancement and coinciding with far-field suppression. …
Protocol Transformations Across Osi Network Stack Layers For Attack, Evasion, And Defense, Nathan Tusing
Protocol Transformations Across Osi Network Stack Layers For Attack, Evasion, And Defense, Nathan Tusing
All Dissertations
Network endpoints frequently contend with errors and deviations within protocols. Many factors account for these deviations including noise, tampering, and algorithm implementations. Intermediate nodes are expected to modify instantiated protocols and not guarantee correctness. This ability to modify traffic enables all sides of network security to alter security and performance properties of protocols, and we define this intermediary modification of an instantiated protocol as a transformation. Protocol transformations traverse layers of the OSI reference model and changes a protocol's time series byte sequence. Within this thesis, we show that this framework applies to multiple domains and protocols. Common examples of …
Concert Tickets, Party Matching, Sleeping Barbers, And Single Lane Bridges: Characterizing Student Reasoning About Concurrency, Aubrey Lawson
Concert Tickets, Party Matching, Sleeping Barbers, And Single Lane Bridges: Characterizing Student Reasoning About Concurrency, Aubrey Lawson
All Dissertations
Programming with concurrency is challenging both to learn and to teach. A concurrent program has multiple computations happening “at the same time” either simultaneously or in an interleaved manner. It is non-deterministic, imposing only a partial ordering on its decomposed parts. Advantages of concurrency include the potential for increased program throughput, high responsiveness and reduced complexity of program structure. But a concurrent program can be more complex to reason about than a sequential program, in part because the conditions of correctness must hold for all possible execution sequences and also because programmers must implement and reason about synchronization constructs that …
A Modern Moral Dilemma: A Utilization Of Culture Wars For Political Gain Within The United States Government, Abigail K. Lowry
A Modern Moral Dilemma: A Utilization Of Culture Wars For Political Gain Within The United States Government, Abigail K. Lowry
Honors Theses
The present study researches the background of culture wars within the United States and showcases how these culture wars are being utilized by political entrepreneurs in order to achieve a goal separate from resolving the expressed policy issue. In an effort to investigate this phenomenon, this paper analyzes the historical timeline of several prominent culture wars within the United States and then uses this background as a lens to examine the political successes and failures of two United States governors who attempted to utilize culture wars in order to advance themselves politically. By examining the rhetoric used by Ron DeSantis …
A Replication Study — Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors Among High School Students — Youth Risk Behavior Survey, United States, 2021, Mallory Hays
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Suicidal thoughts and behaviors among adolescents are critical public health concerns in the United States, with suicide being the third leading cause of death among high school-aged youths (14-18 years). This study replicates and extends the findings of the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted by Gaylor et al., which analyzed data from 13,677 students in 2019 and 17,232 students in 2021. The original study revealed alarming increases in suicidal ideation and behaviors, particularly among female students, and highlighted disparities across demographic groups. Using raw YRBS datasets, this replication involved a pure replication of the original findings, followed by …

This replication of the study focuses on exercise behaviors. The study data, drawn from the CDC’s YRBS in 2019 and 2021, had been selected using a three-stage cluster sampling method in which the clusters in the third stage were selected …
Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities And Considerations In U.S. Healthcare Facilities: A Scoping Review, Rebecca J. Campbell
Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities And Considerations In U.S. Healthcare Facilities: A Scoping Review, Rebecca J. Campbell
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Robust cybersecurity measures are essential for business continuity of U.S. healthcare institutions which is to maintain care standards for all patients. Hackers seek to disrupt healthcare delivery for financial and political means, to disrupt services in retaliation, or simply for malicious intent (Wasserman & Wasserman, 2022). The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated innovation and digitization in healthcare, including wearable and implanted medical devices, telehealth care delivery options, artificial intelligence, and cloud-based data management (Kioskli, Fotis, & Mouratidis, 2021). This progress in innovation continues today but also brings new vulnerabilities and challenges to stay ahead of cybersecurity threats.
Given that cyberattacks have …
Beryllium Work Area And Tank Waste, Angelica Zarate
Beryllium Work Area And Tank Waste, Angelica Zarate
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
My capstone was conducted at the Hanford site in Richland, Washington. It was once a location that produced weapons-grade plutonium, but now its mission is to clean up the radioactive waste that was left behind. My project focused on beryllium and how much is present in the 56 million gallons of waste that needs to be disposed of. I evaluated the OSHA regulations for beryllium work areas, medical surveillance, and beryllium exposure's environmental and health implications. The purpose was to determine if the concentrations present meet the requirements to continue to be considered a beryllium work area.
The Privacy Act Of 1974: The American Bill Of Rights On Data And Its Unfinished Business, Dongsheng Zang
The Privacy Act Of 1974: The American Bill Of Rights On Data And Its Unfinished Business, Dongsheng Zang
Articles
In the midst of the artificial intelligence (“AI”) revolution and the debates around it in 2023, this Article proposes to revisit the history of the Privacy Act of 1974, a federal statute that attempted to revolutionize the notion of privacy in response to automated data processing in the computer age. By recognizing that an individual should have the right to control data about herself, the 1974 Act went beyond the Warren-Brandeis framework of privacy based on tort law—the 1974 Act was essentially an American Bill of Rights on data.
The Article first tracks the conceptual development of this new idea …
The Right To Inequality: Conservative Politics And Precedent Collide, Jonathan P. Feingold
The Right To Inequality: Conservative Politics And Precedent Collide, Jonathan P. Feingold
Connecticut Law Review
The “end of affirmative action” is the beginning of this story. In Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (SFFA), the Supreme Court struck a near fatal blow to race-consciousness. Many institutions have since pivoted to “race neutral alternatives.” This is a natural turn. But one that faces immediate headwinds.
The same entities that demanded Harvard pursue racial diversity through colorblind means have sued public high schools for doing just that. These litigants assert a “right to inequality”—a theory that would pit the Equal Protection Clause against equality itself. Even if normatively jarring, a right to inequality might seem a natural …

Too Woke To Fail? Esg And Silicon Valley Bank's Demise, Xuan-Thao Nguyen
Too Woke To Fail? Esg And Silicon Valley Bank's Demise, Xuan-Thao Nguyen
Washington Law Review
The anti-Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) movement is unfolding in many states as part of the new culture wars. When Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) collapsed in March of 2023, ESG was named as the cause. Corporations, particularly those operating in the financial and banking sector, are justifiably concerned about attracting negative attention from the anti-ESG movement.
This Article posits that the ESG embraced by the financial sector, particularly by banks operating in the venture capital and startup ecosystem, is both timely and necessary. Despite the fierce attack against ESG as seen through a series of state laws and regulations passed …

The Constitutional Case Against State-Controlled Fact-Checking: A Case Comment On Kunal Kamra V. Union Of India, Abhinav Ravi, Aravind Sundar
National Law School of India Review
The Bombay High Court in Kunal Kamra v Union of India struck down the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2023, which had established a centralised fact-checking unit to issue takedown orders against social media posts that were identified as “fake or false or misleading”. The Rules threatened the safe harbour protection of social media intermediaries for failing to adhere to such takedown orders. The Court held that the establishment of the fact-check unit violates the rights of free speech, profession and equality under the Indian Constitution. This article explores the free speech implications of …
Constitutionalism, Social Justice, And Social Contract: Unpacking The Debate On Scheduled Caste Reservation For Christian And Muslim Dalits, Arvind Kumar
National Law School Journal
This article examines the constitutional, historical, and political debates surrounding the demand for extending Scheduled Caste (SC) status to Christian and Muslim Dalits in India. Drawing on Constituent Assembly Debates, archival materials, judicial decisions, government affidavits, petitions, and my previous scholarship, it challenges the claim that SC reservation was originally conceived as religion-neutral. The article argues that SC reservation emerged as a specific pre-constitutional agreement rooted in the Poona Pact and designed to address the historical injustice of untouchability within Hindu society. Its provisions were subsequently extended to Sikh and Buddhist converts under particular historical and political circumstances but did …

A Linguistic Analysis Of The Language Surrounding Witchcraft In France From The 16th To 20th Centuries, Kaleigh Landers
Honors Theses
While the history of witchcraft in France is a subject that has received significant scholarly attention, little research has been conducted on the linguistic implications of the language used in regard to the subject. This study attempts to analyze the texts written about witchcraft between the 16th and 20th centuries in order to draw conclusions as to how language and culture affect each other. The aim of this study was to conduct a discourse analysis of these texts to identify cultural connotations, language trends, and insights regarding how the French language has evolved to communicate complex, dividing concepts …
