Site Amplification In The Salt Lake Valley, Utah, During The 2020 Magna Earthquake, Blair A. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
Site amplification in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, has been a focus for both geologists and engineers due to its complex geology and seismic vulnerability. This study utilizes data from the 2020 Magna Earthquake to analyze site amplification from previously unavailable strong ground motion data. Ground motion data from the University of Utah Regional Seismic Network and the National Strong Motion Project, combined with extensive soil profiles, was analyzed using the program DEEPSOIL. The study compares computed motions with measured motions, revealing differences in site amplification across the Salt Lake Valley. Notably, the highest amplification was observed at longer periods …
Frenemies: Why The Ftc Should Explore The Utility Of State Copas To Address Anticompetitive Consolidation In Healthcare, Alicia Gilbert
Frenemies: Why The Ftc Should Explore The Utility Of State Copas To Address Anticompetitive Consolidation In Healthcare, Alicia Gilbert
Louisiana Law Review
Much like other ‘90s trends, Certificates of Public Advantage (COPAs) are making a comeback. States have the potential to use COPAs as a unique healthcare antitrust enforcement mechanism. Rather than following a regime that exclusively focuses on price and output like traditional antitrust analysis, COPAs allow for greater consideration of other efficiencies, such as quality and access to care. And COPAs are designed to protect consumers through regulation rather than by protecting competition. Yet the policy position of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on COPAs ignores these opportunities, blanketly viewing COPAs as a threat to competition. This Article critiques the …

A Right To Be Heard: A Proposal For Independent Victim’S Counsel For Sexual Assault Survivors, Madelyn Hayward
A Right To Be Heard: A Proposal For Independent Victim’S Counsel For Sexual Assault Survivors, Madelyn Hayward
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In the last two decades, there have been several helpful and progressive reforms dedicated to changing the landscape of sexual violence. Yet, survivors of sexual assault lack a voice in the criminal justice process. The support offered by victim advocates and coordinators allows victims to be seen but not heard by the court. This Note contends that the progressive step the criminal justice system must take is an independent victim’s counsel program similar to the United States military. This Note proposes model legislation establishing an Independent Victim’s Counsel program in federal and state criminal justice systems. It is time for …

Discharge-To-Water Level Conversion Using Monthly Duration Curves (Dwl-Mdc): Enhancing The Utility Of The Geoglows Ecmwf Hydrological Model, Darlly Judith Rojas Lesmes
Theses and Dissertations
Flood early warning systems are crucial for disaster risk reduction strategies, enabling communities to take timely action against threats. However, the effectiveness of these systems depends on accurate and timely hydrological data, particularly river discharge and water level measurements. Unfortunately, many regions, face significant challenges in obtaining hydrological data, especially discharge data due to outdated rating curves, high equipment costs, and logistical constraints. Water level measurements, by contrast, offer reduced uncertainty and are often more accessible, providing an alternative for hydrological modeling in data-scarce regions. To address these limitations, we developed and validated the Discharge-to-Water Level Conversion Using Monthly Duration …

Two Lies And A Truth: Perceived Credibility's Effect On The Truth Effect, Zefanya Boentoro, Carter King, Josiah Rosario
Student Work
The truth effect posits that a person believes information the more they are exposed to it. This study researched the effects of perceived source credibility on the truth effect when perceptual fluency is consistent. One hundred ninety-four participants across four groups reviewed sets of information with differing repetitions and perceived credibilities; they then reported their willingness to believe the presented information. A statistically significant relationship was found between one of the sources for one set of information and the willingness to believe scores, while no relationship existed between the repetitions and willingness to believe scores.

Utility Of Immobilized Metal Salens As Electrocatalysts: Fuel Cells And Organic Electrosynthesis, Zachary A. Nguyen, Shelley D. Minteer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
There have been significant advancements in the electrosynthesis of fuels and organic molecules, making it an increasingly sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional chemical redox reagents. Early versions of these systems faced challenges in chemo selectivity due to high applied overpotentials, which have been mitigated with the introduction of molecular electrocatalysts, like metal salens (MSalens). These MSalens reduce the required overpotentials, increase turnover numbers (TON), and have simple modularity within their ligand structure allowing for tunable selectivity. While these MSalen electrocatalysts are typically used homogeneously for engineering simplicity, downstream separations are often costly and time-consuming. Immobilization of MSalens addresses these …

The scaffolding function of receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) confers intrinsic and extrinsic resistance to immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs) and emerges as a promising target for improving cancer immunotherapies. To address the challenge posed by a poorly defined binding pocket within the intermediate domain of RIPK1, here we harness proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) technology to develop a RIPK1 degrader, LD4172. LD4172 exhibits potent and selective RIPK1 degradation both in vitro and in vivo. Degradation of RIPK1 by LD4172 triggers immunogenic cell death, enhances tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte responses, and sensitizes tumors to anti-PD1 therapy in female C57BL/6J mice. This work reports …

Efficient Visual Data Processing Approaches To Improve Resource Utilization, Yeganeh Jalalpour
Efficient Visual Data Processing Approaches To Improve Resource Utilization, Yeganeh Jalalpour
Dissertations and Theses
With continuous advancements in technology, the volume of visual data being captured, distributed, and consumed across various applications is rapidly increasing. Enhancing the efficiency of visual data processing can improve resource consumption, making the storage, transmission, and use of this growing visual content more effective.
Image and video data constitute a significant share of internet traffic, making video compression a critical factor in enhancing overall data throughput by improving the video compression ratio. Capturing, transferring, and storing raw video data is challenging due to the substantial resources required for both storage and computation. Video compression, however, can significantly mitigate these …

Enhanced Glucose Production In Norepinephrine And Palmitate Stimulated Hepatocytes Following Endurance Training, Ken D. Sumida, Vera M. Lordan, Casey M. Donovan
Health Sciences and Kinesiology Faculty Articles
Enhanced hepatic gluconeogenesis plays an important role in exercise glucose homeostasis when hepatic glycogen stores are depleted. Livers from trained animals demonstrate greater rates of gluconeogenesis in the presence of elevated substrate with and without hormonal stimulation. Training has been reported to have a particularly profound impact on norepinephrine-stimulated gluconeogenesis, but this was only demonstrated in the presence of other gluconeogenic hormones. Here we reexamine the impact of endurance training on norepinephrine-stimulated gluconeogenesis in the absence of any other hormones. Isolated hepatocytes from trained and untrained rats were incubated in 6 mM lactate with various concentrations of norepinephrine (0 nM–20 …

A Contemporary Examination Of Racial Intraminority Relations: Attitudes, Motivations, And Barriers To Participation In Collective Action, Jaboa Shawntaé Lake
Dissertations and Theses
Social movements globally and within the U.S. are gaining widespread acknowledgment as many individuals become more aware of systems of disadvantage and oppression, gain a better understanding of their root causes, and engage in collective ways to approach social change. Social science research on engagement with collective action has started to go beyond looking only at majority-minority relations (such as between White and Black people) to examine solidarity and coalition building between minoritized groups. This dissertation expands the literature both on collective action and intraminority intergroup relations through three manuscripts. Chapter II explores various social attitudes (e.g., awareness of privilege …

BACKGROUND: After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, confusion followed regarding the legality of abortion in different states across the country. Recent studies found increased Google searches for abortion-related terms in restricted states after the Dobbsv. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision was leaked. As patients and providers use Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) as a predominant medical information source, we hypothesized that changes in reproductive health information-seeking behavior could be better understood by examining Wikipedia article traffic.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine trends in Wikipedia usage for abortion and contraception information before and after the Dobbs decision.

Spectacle! The Power Of Protest Drama During Martial Law, Glecy C. Atienza
Kritika Kultura
The paper aims to identify the streams and influences of protest drama in the rich theatrical productions during Martial Law 1972-1986. The focus is on the different perspectives and commitment that shaped the struggles in form and content in the plays staged by selected groups in a number of provinces in the country. The primary staging ground for discussion is the politics of the spectacle which will be traced through the different dynamics of creating a play from the staged text through the process of producing a play.
Philippine Theater In Confinement: Breaking Out Of Martial Law, Bienvenido Lumbera
Philippine Theater In Confinement: Breaking Out Of Martial Law, Bienvenido Lumbera
Kritika Kultura
The declaration of Martial Law during the Marcos administration brought about a period of censorship and a complete rejection of any form of protest against the established figures of authority. Activists then looked for other forms of communication through which they could channel their dissent and rally more people towards the cause. It was during this period that Philippine theater was taken out of the stage and into the streets, when the “art” of the “elite” was brought down to the masses. These efforts also shifted the language of Philippine theater from American English to Pilipino, marking the beginning of …
Socialist Shenanigans And Emerald Epiphanies: The Case Of Margaretta D'Arcy And John Arden, Tim Prentki
Socialist Shenanigans And Emerald Epiphanies: The Case Of Margaretta D'Arcy And John Arden, Tim Prentki
Kritika Kultura
This essay explores the two meanings of “radical” – the popular one of “sharp-edged’”or “extreme” and the original one of “rooted within the culture” – in relation to selected works of D’Arcy and Arden: The Non-Stop Connolly Show (1975), Vandaleur’s Folly (1978) and The Little Gray Home in the West (1978). Within the space of contradiction between these meanings, the paper considers such issues as the political function of the outsider, the rival claims of reform and revolution, relationships between text and means of production and between forms and audience ownership. The perennial question of the battle between republicanism and …
"Not Always, But Often": Introduction To A Special Issue On Radical Theatre And Ireland, Victor Merriman
"Not Always, But Often": Introduction To A Special Issue On Radical Theatre And Ireland, Victor Merriman
Kritika Kultura
This article sketches Irish history and how Irish nationalism deployed cultural production – including radical theatre – as a means of asserting itself as a political and moral force. “Radical Theatre” prompts questions around what both Baz Kershaw and Herbert Blau refer to as “efficacy,” insofar as it implies engagements with content, form, and audiences outside of those which characterise accepted, dominant or commercial manifestations of theatre practice. And yet, scholars and practitioners of radical theatre confront the slipperiness of the concept of radical theatre: it shifts emphasis between theatre as cultural intervention for social progress (a critical, subversive, ethical …
History As Rumor: The Political Fantasy Of The Negrense Elite In Vicente Groyon'sthe Sky Over Dimas, Mayel P. Martin
History As Rumor: The Political Fantasy Of The Negrense Elite In Vicente Groyon'sthe Sky Over Dimas, Mayel P. Martin
Kritika Kultura
This ideological critique reads Vicente Groyon’s The Sky Over Dimas in its appropriation of historiographic metafiction. The paper argues that its two borrowed modes, historiography and metafiction, function as a symbolic act following Fredric Jameson’s Marxist interpretive ground of the political. In The Sky Over Dimas, historiographic metafiction is a symbolic act that articulates the political unconscious/fantasy of the landed elite while repressing their role in the perpetuation of the feudal system of sugar in Negros. This provisionalizing or bracketing of history in the novel, unlike other historiographic metafictional texts like Great Philippine Jungle Energy Café, State of War and …
