Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Based Metabolomics, Lipidomics And Epitranscriptomics., Raobo Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Metabolomics and lipidomics are the comprehensive studies of metabolites and lipids in cells, biological fluids, tissues, or organisms. These distinct chemical fingerprints are left behind by cellular processes. Epitranscriptomics is the field that focuses on examining chemical modifications on RNA molecules at the transcriptome level. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has been widely used in those omics studies. In this dissertation, I developed and applied both untargeted and targeted approaches using LC-MS based various analytical platforms to conduct omics studies. Firstly, I investigated caffeine metabolites in human urine and discovered three potential functional biomarkers to differentiate the stages of alcohol-associated liver …

Development Of A Square Wave Voltage Field-Oriented Controller For A Linear Vapor Compressor., Thomas Everson Dec 2024

Development Of A Square Wave Voltage Field-Oriented Controller For A Linear Vapor Compressor., Thomas Everson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a novel control strategy for an inverter-driven linear compressor system is proposed in which the overall electrical losses of a coupled inverter-linear motor system are reduced through the use of a modified square wave inverter modulation scheme to minimize inverter switching losses at the expense of a modest increase in conduction losses. The controller is based on a single-phase field-oriented control strategy, and to achieve the FOC control objectives, the fundamental and dc components of the applied square wave voltage are matched to the corresponding values requested by the current controller. To validate the efficiency improvements offered …

Nickel Electrocatalysts On Carbon Supports For The Hydrogen Evolution Reaction., Mohan Paudel Dec 2024

Nickel Electrocatalysts On Carbon Supports For The Hydrogen Evolution Reaction., Mohan Paudel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydrogen is an important energy storage alternative to fossil fuels due to its high energy density. Currently, most hydrogen is produced through petroleum feedstocks, which produce large amounts of carbon dioxide. However, a more eco-friendly method is the electrocatalytic splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen. Efficient catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are typically platinum group metals, which are rare and expensive. There is growing interest in developing HER electrocatalysts with earth-abundant metals for water electrolysis. Nickel, which lies in the same group in the periodic table as Pt and has similar chemical properties, is explored extensively for …

Modeling And Understanding Of Additive Manufacturing Periodic Cellular Structures With Heterogeneity: Property, Quality And Design Strategy., Naresh Koju Dec 2024

Modeling And Understanding Of Additive Manufacturing Periodic Cellular Structures With Heterogeneity: Property, Quality And Design Strategy., Naresh Koju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lightweight cellular structures with their higher per mass performance capability, multifunctional designability and property tolerability are gaining much wider adaptation in many engineering applications ranging from aerospace, defense, biomedical, automotive to sports. However, to achieve the desired performance levels careful design must be carried out. The experimental-based empirical design often involves high manufacturing cost, and there are also certain information/knowledges about the cellular deigns that could not be easily obtained experimentally, such as the deformation local fracture initiation. Similarly, numerical modeling-based design approach commonly suffers from high computation cost and the lack of inverse designability. In addition, numerical models often …

The Case For E15: A Cheaper, Cleaner Fuel, Cassidy Skillett Dec 2024

The Case For E15: A Cheaper, Cleaner Fuel, Cassidy Skillett

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

In its name, “E” indicates that the fuel contains ethanol and “15” communicates that 15% of the gasoline blend is ethanol. When Nebraskan drivers pull up to the gas station, they can buy cheaper and cleaner E15. In 43 states - drivers are not so lucky. A new bill would end fuel discrimination of E15 at refueling stations nationwide.

This change is long overdue and would allow E15 to be available year-round in all states rather than just during the winter.

Visual navigation systems are crucial in various applications, including autonomous driving, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and industrial automation. For these systems to operate efficiently in dynamic environments, they must not only interpret complex surroundings but also anticipate changes over time. Temporal prediction—forecasting environmental changes like moving obstacles or shifting lighting conditions—enables navigation systems to act proactively, enhancing both safety and performance. This dissertation investigates representation learning methods both as a backbone feature extractor for RL agents as well as a proxy for systems oriented for Explainable AI (XAI). Two main projects are presented as case studies to achieve the aforementioned …

Shifting Perspectives With Procedural Modeling Techniques And Vertex Animated Textures For Real-Time Interactive Morphing, Stephanie Schulze Dec 2024

Shifting Perspectives With Procedural Modeling Techniques And Vertex Animated Textures For Real-Time Interactive Morphing, Stephanie Schulze

All Theses

As humans experience reality, they intake external stimuli using sensory receptors to process information, forming a perception. Perceptions are subjective and shape each individual’s reality. Naturally then, by changing one’s perceptions, their experience of reality is altered, for better or worse. To emphasize the idea that perception is malleable and encourage a mindset of questioning alternative ways to look at a situation, an interactive experience in Unreal Engine is developed where a dull cityscape morphs and transforms into a surreal oversized nature scene. Procedural modeling techniques are used to create a variety of morphing assets, while Vertex Animated Textures are …

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Despite improvements to environmental protection initiatives, millions of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) continue to live in communities that are disproportionately affected by environmental contamination. Environmental Justice (EJ) screening tools, such as CalEnviroScreen, EJ Map, and PennEnviroScreen, have been developed to help state and federal governments gauge the extent of EJ in their jurisdictions. These screening tools have propelled the EJ advocacy initiative, illustrating the historic and ongoing disproportionate effects of contamination in many BIPOC communities. Yet, screening tools and their indicators vary, and we must understand how these tools and indicator choices differently identify at-risk communities, …

Net Evaporation-Induced Mangrove Area Loss Across Low-Lying Caribbean Islands, Isamar M. Cortés, Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba, Andre S. Rovai, Robert R. Twilley, Mark Chopping, Temilola Fatoyinbo

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Although mangroves provide many beneficial ecosystem services, such as blue carbon storage and coastal protection, they are currently under threat due to changes in climate conditions, such as prolonged drought exposure. Under drought conditions, evaporation exceeds precipitation and high soil salinities can lead to stunted growth and die-back. To quantify this interplay, we developed a database for low-lying and uninhabited mangrove islands in the Caribbean under various evaporation and precipitation regimes. We extracted physical and biological information from each island using remote sensing techniques and coupled it with a process-based model. We used this database to develop a model that …

The Climatic Pattern Of East Asia Shifted In Response To Cratonic Thinning In The Early Cretaceous, Wenbo Wang, Xu Chu, Jian Zhang, Ying Cui, Xuegen Chen, Yue Wang, Shangguo Su Dec 2024

The Climatic Pattern Of East Asia Shifted In Response To Cratonic Thinning In The Early Cretaceous, Wenbo Wang, Xu Chu, Jian Zhang, Ying Cui, Xuegen Chen, Yue Wang, Shangguo Su

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In response to westward subduction of the Paleo-Pacific, the North China Craton experienced the uplift of an eastern coastal plateau followed by subsidence in the Early Cretaceous, which potentially drove a shift in climatic patterns. Here we use the oxygen isotope ratios of garnets from magmatic-hydrothermal ore systems to infer the origins and signatures of mineralization fluids during this tectonic transition. The garnet oxygen isotope values range from approximately –11.4 to +13.5‰, with extremely depleted oxygen isotope ratios exclusively found in the northern margin, indicating extensive involvement of meteoric and lacustrine fluid in the back-arc hinterland. This geological record aligns …

Unveiling Misconceptions Of Tunneling: Market Capitalization-Based Analysis, Sang Yop Kang

Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review

In internal transactions between affiliated companies, there are two opposite directions of wealth-transfer: (1) in the “forward transfer of wealth” (FTW), the wealth-transfer arises from an affiliated company where a controller’s “economic interest” (i.e., “cash-flow right”) is smaller relative to another affiliated company where the controller’s economic interest is larger; (2) in the “reverse transfer of wealth” (RTW), the wealth-transfer arises from an affiliated company where a controller’s economic interest is larger relative to another affiliated company, where the controller’s economic interest is smaller. This Article puts forward a new finding that the extent of internal-transaction tunneling is affected not …

Reducing Token Redundancy In Video-Language Models Via Memory Consolidation Algorithm, Matt Couts Dec 2024

Reducing Token Redundancy In Video-Language Models Via Memory Consolidation Algorithm, Matt Couts

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Video Question Answering (VideoQA) focuses on developing mod- els capable of engaging in natural language conversations about video con- tent. Current state-of-the-art typically analyze videos frame-by-frame, a process that is both computationally and memory-intensive. Integrating the Atkinson-Shiffrin memory model with Video Language Models has demon- strated potential for enhancing video understanding capabilities. Reducing the number of frames processed by the model is a crucial operation in this approach, which is achieved by a memory consolidation algorithm. This al- gorithm condenses a video sequence into a small set of representative frames which capture the essence of the video content. However, due …

The Ugly Rhetoric Of Dobbs, Or, Why Jack Balkin Is History, Andrew Koppelman Dec 2024

The Ugly Rhetoric Of Dobbs, Or, Why Jack Balkin Is History, Andrew Koppelman

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This Essay has three claims. First, I want to emphasize an underappreciated ethical virtue elicited by the practice of rhetoric: it demands that the speaker get out of his own head and focus on his audience and what they care about. History matters because it speaks to us. It tells us who we are and why we are doing what we are doing. The rhetorical deployment of historical narrative in political discourse can help to forge a collective identity in which we all can recognize ourselves, and so make the polity more inclusive. Second, if this aspect of rhetoric is …

Evaluating The Efficiency Of Lossless Compression Algorithms Across Multiple Formats In Archival Compression, Matthew Gonzales Dec 2024

Evaluating The Efficiency Of Lossless Compression Algorithms Across Multiple Formats In Archival Compression, Matthew Gonzales

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Data storage or retention is an essential part of all business operations. Modern companies opt to store user data seven years or more after it is deleted and even longer when it’s still being hosted. Therefore, when storing files for long periods of time compression becomes an essential step in reducing cost and total file storage. Compression is the strategic removement of portions of data while ensuring that enough data is left behind to reconstruct the file during decompression. This experiment seeks to identify potential benefits of compression in groups of files of differing formats in comparison to individual file …
