Covid-19 Impacts On College Students’ Basic Needs Insecurity, Megan K. Schraedley Ph.D., Ashlie B. Delshad Ph.D. Nov 2024

Covid-19 Impacts On College Students’ Basic Needs Insecurity, Megan K. Schraedley Ph.D., Ashlie B. Delshad Ph.D.

Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, data clearly documented that college students experience a higher rate of basic needs insecurity, including food insecurity, than the general US population. COVID-19 both expanded the rate of basic needs insecurity and decreased the range of resources students had access to. In this study, we examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on college student basic needs insecurity through a qualitative photovoice study. Our research draws upon Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth model and the concepts of navigational and social capital specifically. The findings indicate that students experienced heightened levels of basic needs insecurity during the …

Explainable Machine Learning Approach Enables Computer-Aided Identification System For Children Autism Spectrum Disorder (C-Asd), Karrar Hameed Abdulkareem, Zainab Hussein Arif, Mazin Abed Mohammed

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Neurodevelopmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cause significant cognitive, linguistic, object identification, communication, and social skills deficits. Although there is currently no cure for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), early detection can aid in diagnosis and implementing effective preventative measures. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools allow for an earlier diagnosis of ASD than was previously possible. Furthermore, many clinical and not clinical attributes can be used for identification of ASD but select the most proper ones still challenge. Therefore, in this study we propose a Computer-Aided Identification System based on machine learning concept and feature selection methods to diagnosis Children Autism …

Negotiating Tolerance: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing And Researching Religion In China, Naomi Thurston Nov 2024

Negotiating Tolerance: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing And Researching Religion In China, Naomi Thurston

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Just as G. E. Lessing criticized what he saw as the narrow mindedness of his contemporaries by creating characters that exemplified a morally enlightened rationalism, religious studies scholars in contemporary China have helped instruct and reshape uninformed or generalizing attitudes towards religion in Chinese society. Reflecting on Lessing’s literary case for religious tolerance, the present article discusses different understandings of the nature and significance of religion in the field of so-called “Sino-Christian studies” (汉语基督教研究 Hanyu Jidujiao yanjiu). It demonstrates how religious and “theological tolerance” are variously understood depending on the stances, approaches, and constructions of meaning of individual scholars, influenced, …

Ethics And The Evolving Deployments Of Disciplinary Practices: A Foucauldian Analysis Of The Glamorization Of Bodies, Gerald Pio M. Franco Nov 2024

Ethics And The Evolving Deployments Of Disciplinary Practices: A Foucauldian Analysis Of The Glamorization Of Bodies, Gerald Pio M. Franco

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The paper discusses how individuals are constituted by disciplinary practices as presented in Michel Foucault’s two major works: Discipline and Punish and The History of Sexuality, Volume 1: An Introduction. The workings of power-knowledge gave rise to the penal apparatus and deployments of sexuality, which affected entire populations. But even as these disciplinary practices evolve and become seemingly more humane and liberating, they continue to produce docile and normalized subjects. One particular example of this process, discussed here in detail, is the transition from the figure of the hysterical woman to the modern glamorous (beautiful) woman. Such a transition extends …

Are Secular Politics Possible?, Gregory C. Melleuish, Susanna G. Rizzo Nov 2024

Are Secular Politics Possible?, Gregory C. Melleuish, Susanna G. Rizzo

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Contemporary political analysis makes a distinction between politics that are secular in nature and politics that are religiously based. This article questions whether there is such a thing as secular politics. Firstly, it examines the roots of the secular/religious dichotomy in Western thought and concludes that it is the creation of particular intellectual developments in the West. And then it argues that modern politics is best viewed in terms of a number of “sacred projects” that are generated out of the supposedly secular nature of the modern West. There can be no real politics without such projects, only administration. Even …

Derrida On The Convention Of Textual Spacing, Mark Michael Raftery-Skehan Nov 2024

Derrida On The Convention Of Textual Spacing, Mark Michael Raftery-Skehan

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper focuses on various textual elements in prose writing (footnotes, titles, and prefaces) such as they determine, and are determined by, the textual spacing of the page. Far from functioning in the way that the typographical, syntactical spaces between words do, or from replicating the pauses punctuating words in speech, such spacing is singularly and irreducibly textual. Functioning like non-phonetic marks such as parentheses, or expressing relations of hierarchy (as between footnote and text), textual spacing’s manifold functions belie their pristine blankness. I look at this textual spacing of the preface, title, and footnote, as its orthodox and deviational …

The Practice Of Hermeneutics: The Legal Text And Beyond, George H. Taylor Nov 2024

The Practice Of Hermeneutics: The Legal Text And Beyond, George H. Taylor

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This article attempts to show the continuing practical relevance of hermeneutics through the example of legal interpretation. The article begins with the very concrete nature of legal hermeneutics that forms everyday legal practice—the interrelation of meaning and application— and expands at a more theoretical to show how legal hermeneutics, and hermeneutics more generally, offers what Ricoeur calls an interpretive “choice in favor of meaning.” The choice in favor of meaning underscores the restorative character of hermeneutics that legal hermeneutics can epitomize. The article concludes with some of the challenges facing contemporary legal hermeneutics.

Cognitive Ethology, Animals And Society, And The American Sociological Association, Arnold Arluke Nov 2024

Cognitive Ethology, Animals And Society, And The American Sociological Association, Arnold Arluke

Animal Sentience

Griffin’s The Question of Animal Awareness (1976) and Animal Minds (2001) enabled and emboldened other disciplines to expand their research to include non-human animals. The creation of a dedicated section on human-animal relationships in sociology’s national professional organization is but one example.

Resilience Of A Palestinian University Instructor Surviving War: A Grounded Theory Study, Hassan El-Nabih, Sadek Firwana

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

This qualitative study addressed the devastating impacts of war on civilians by giving voice to a Palestinian university instructor who had a life-threatening experience during the Israeli aggressive war on the Gaza Strip in 2014. The data for the study were gathered from two different sources: (i) a narrative written by the instructor shortly after his recovery and (ii) a semi-structured interview conducted with him three years after this harrowing event. In order to explore and theorize the salient themes in the data, we adopted a three-phase grounded theory methodology. The initial coding phase yielded 30 important codes, which were …

Intelligent Noise Suppression For 3d Post-Stack Seismic Data Of The Junggar Basin, Mao Haibo, Zhou Xin, Li Xiaofeng, Pan Long, Lin Juan, Liu Dawei, Wang Xiaokai Nov 2024

Intelligent Noise Suppression For 3d Post-Stack Seismic Data Of The Junggar Basin, Mao Haibo, Zhou Xin, Li Xiaofeng, Pan Long, Lin Juan, Liu Dawei, Wang Xiaokai

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective The Junggar Basin is recognized as a significant petroliferous basin in China, and its hydrocarbon exploration targets have shifted to deeper strata. However, the 3D seismic data of this basin suffer from low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and high data volumes due to the basin's complex near-surface conditions, the great depths of exploration targets, and seismic data acquisition methods characterized by wide azimuths, broadbands, and high density. This complicates the identification of hydrocarbon exploration targets, rendering the improvement in the quality of the 3D seismic data by noise suppression vitally important. Methods The progress in the deep learning theory and …

Developing Linguistic Patterns To Mitigate Inherent Human Bias In Offensive Language Detection, Toygar Tanyel, Besher Alkurdi, Serkan Ayvaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With the proliferation of social media, there has been a sharp increase in offensive content, particularly targeting vulnerable groups, exacerbating social problems such as hatred, racism, and sexism. Detecting offensive language use is crucial to prevent offensive language from being widely shared on social media. However, the accurate detection of irony, implication, and various forms of hate speech on social media remains a challenge. Natural language-based deep learning models require extensive training with large, comprehensive, and labeled datasets. Unfortunately, manually creating such datasets is both costly and error-prone. Additionally, the presence of human-bias in offensive language datasets is a major …

Exploring The Curriculum Potential Of The Welsh Word Cynefin By Examining Its New Materialist And Contemplative Pedagogical Resonances, Dylan Adams Nov 2024

Exploring The Curriculum Potential Of The Welsh Word Cynefin By Examining Its New Materialist And Contemplative Pedagogical Resonances, Dylan Adams

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

Cynefin is a key word in the new curriculum for Wales. Yet it is a word that is difficult to define. It has no direct English translation and originates from Welsh hill farming where it was used by farmers to describe how sheep would form a mysterious attachment to different parts of common land. Subsequently, it has come to be associated with a person’s relationship to a place, where they feel at home. This article examines how the concept of cynefin potentially resonates with posthumanist and contemplative pedagogical perspectives. In doing so, it aims to answer the question, “how could …

Are You Who Ai Says You Are? Exploring The Role Of Natural Language Processing Algorithms For “Predicting” Personality Traits From Text, Mukhunth Raghavan Nov 2024

Are You Who Ai Says You Are? Exploring The Role Of Natural Language Processing Algorithms For “Predicting” Personality Traits From Text, Mukhunth Raghavan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Advances in text analytic approaches to measuring personality traits from text and speech have shown great promise for automating the assessment of personality. While a lot of effort has gone into developing robust algorithms for predicting personality ratings, more work is needed in understanding the function and theoretical relationships of these algorithmic ratings. This study proposes a novel application of the Trait-Reputation-Identity model (McAbee and Connelly, 2016), wherein, algorithm-generated ratings form the Reputation factor and are assumed to resemble learned observer ratings, the original self-report ratings form the Identity factor, and the total set of ratings form the consensus Trait …

A Systematic Review Of The Effects Of Ai-Assisted Moderation On Individuals And Groups, Zehui Yu, Lukas Otto, Dennis Assenmacher, Claudia Wagner

Human-Machine Communication

This review paper provides a conceptualization of AI-assisted content moderation with various degrees of autonomy and summarizes experimental evidence for how different levels of automation in content moderation and related losses of autonomy affect individuals and groups. Our results show that current research predominantly focuses on individuallevel effects, necessitating a shift toward understanding the impact on groups. The study highlights gaps in exploring different levels of AI-assisted moderation interventions and misalignments of different conceptualizations that make comparing research results difficult. The discussion underscores the prevailing emphasis on harmful content removal and advocates for investigating more constructive moderation techniques, emphasizing the …

"There Is No Such Thing As A Machine That Acts Outside Of Relations With Humans”, Lucy Suchman, Caja Thimm Nov 2024

"There Is No Such Thing As A Machine That Acts Outside Of Relations With Humans”, Lucy Suchman, Caja Thimm

Human-Machine Communication

Starting with her early works on “Talk with Machines” (1986, republished in 2021) and her books Plans and Situated Actions: The Problem of Human-Machine Communication (1987) and Human-Machine Reconfigurations (2007a), Lucy Suchman not only opened up a new domain of scientific interest in humans and technology, but also showed how the scope of human machine relations needs to be reconceptualized. With her most recent works (2023a, 2023b), she not only widens the perspective on the contexts for machine usage, particularly by the military, but she also gives insights on how to conceptualize AI in terms of its ontological status and …

Undamaged Intersubjectivity As The Irreducible Beginning: JüRgen Habermas On Resolving The Paradox Of The Constitution Of A Democratic Community, Maria Lovelyn C. Paclibar Nov 2024

Undamaged Intersubjectivity As The Irreducible Beginning: JüRgen Habermas On Resolving The Paradox Of The Constitution Of A Democratic Community, Maria Lovelyn C. Paclibar

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This article constructs Habermas’s response to the debate in political theory on the problem of the boundaries of a democratic community. A newly constituted democratic community cannot legitimately account for its own boundaries of inclusion without resorting to an arbitrary source of constitutive power. Using a deliberative model for interpreting the founding act of communities, Habermas argues that the source of legitimacy is not an external arbitrary power, but the internal counterfactual ideal of mutal recognition in communicative processes. I argue, however, that Habermas’s model stands on a too robust sense of autonomy of democratic actors, one that cannot fully …

How Does A Foreign Religion Thrive In An Indigenous Culture? A Comparative Study Of The Spread Of Foreign Religions In The Chinese-Speaking Cultural Sphere, Wei-Ding Tsai Nov 2024

How Does A Foreign Religion Thrive In An Indigenous Culture? A Comparative Study Of The Spread Of Foreign Religions In The Chinese-Speaking Cultural Sphere, Wei-Ding Tsai

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Religion can be considered, on one hand, to be a human practice dependent on its own culture. On the other hand, religion is also a system of beliefs with a dogmatic character. Because religion has the tendency to preserve its cultural form, it therefore encounters a paradoxical problem of adaptation when it spreads within a foreign cultural area: How can an extending religion retain both its own cultural core as well as be adaptable and modifiable, in order to be accepted by other foreign cultures? Through a comparison of the history of the spread of Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam within …

Suffering, Salvation, And The Filipino: Francis SchüSsler Fiorenza's Theology Of Divine Emancipatory Solidarity In The Context Of Poverty And Marginalization, Michael Demetrius H. Asis Nov 2024

Suffering, Salvation, And The Filipino: Francis SchüSsler Fiorenza's Theology Of Divine Emancipatory Solidarity In The Context Of Poverty And Marginalization, Michael Demetrius H. Asis

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Francis Schüssler Fiorenza’s “emancipatory solidarity” theory is here proposed as the framework for an alternative Filipino soteriology that focuses not on the Cross as sole salvific event, but on Christ’s life, ministry, death, and resurrection in its entirety as key to human redemption in its fullness, including both the physical and spiritual dimensions. In contrast to the concept of redemption as the mere alleviation of suffering, this paper suggests an alternative interpretation of the Filipino virtue of fortitude in the face of suffering as in itself constitutive of a redemptive religious moment and experience.

Pusong Mamon: Nel Noddings's Care Ethics In The Filipino Educational Setting, Noelle Leslie Dela Cruz Nov 2024

Pusong Mamon: Nel Noddings's Care Ethics In The Filipino Educational Setting, Noelle Leslie Dela Cruz

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper evaluates Nel Noddings’s view of moral education in the context of teaching in a Philippine university. It first presents the key aspects of Noddings’s ethical theory, identifying her three strategic moves as follows: the dissolution of the public/private split, the replacement of justice-based punishment system with a caring system, and the promotion of care work as the core of education itself. Through a discussion of two cases of academic dishonesty, the author assesses the merits of these strategies and recommends a re-conceptualization both of care ethics and the existing educational paradigm.

An Inquiry Into The Historical Development Of Philosophy In Japan, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra Nov 2024

An Inquiry Into The Historical Development Of Philosophy In Japan, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

What is Japanese Philosophy? This paper will address this question, not by giving a survey of the works of Japanese philosophers or a definition of the subject matter of Japanese philosophy, but by attempting to present how it emerged as a distinct philosophical tradition—by sketching the controversies that gave rise to its formation; the social, intellectual, and historical factors that paved the way to its development; and the revolution of thought which finally gave it the title “Japanese philosophy.” I will argue that Japanese philosophy was born not because Japanese thinkers desperately wanted a philosophy that they could call their …

Just as archivists continue to frame their professional work around …

Pedagogy: Teaching Practices Of American Colonial Educators In The Philippines, Isabel Pefianco Martin Nov 2024

Pedagogy: Teaching Practices Of American Colonial Educators In The Philippines, Isabel Pefianco Martin

Kritika Kultura

Filipino historian and essayist Renato Constantino wrote: “With American education, the Filipinos were not only learning a new language; they were not only forgetting their own language; they were starting to become a new type of American.” What specific strategies did the American colonizers use to create this new type of American? How did they use the public schools to produce their cultural clones? The answer may be found in the language and literature teaching practices of American colonial educators in the Philippines. This paper argues that the Anglo American canon of literature imposed on the Filipinos would not have …

Song And Substance: Women Writing Poetry In Cebuano, Marjorie Evasco

Kritika Kultura

Among the emergent voices in Philippine Literature in the past decade up to the present, the most exciting to read and listen to are those of the women in the Visayas and Mindanao who are writing poetry and fiction in Cebuano. Never before since the “golden age of Cebuano literature” from 1900-1940 have the creative work of women seen such burgeoning. And this growth is substantiated by the creative work published in three literary anthologies by women, namely Centering Voices (1995), Fern Garden: Anthology of Women Writing in the South (1998), and Sinug-ang: A Cebuano Trio (1999). This paper focuses …
