Reflections On The Iheart Programme By Different Stakeholders: : Self-Confidence, Mental Wellbeing And Resilience, Gulsah Selin Tumkaya Jan 2024

Reflections On The Iheart Programme By Different Stakeholders: : Self-Confidence, Mental Wellbeing And Resilience, Gulsah Selin Tumkaya

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

To promote social justice and educational equity for all students, teachers are given a significant place in international policy and literature as essential agents of change. Training teachers for inclusive practices necessitates building their self-confidence to increase their understanding of how they may use their resources to support children and adolescents, as well as boost their self-confidence. Teachers’ resilience to overcome difficulties may also have a crucial role in increasing the effectiveness of inclusive practices. This is because, despite agreement about the benefits of inclusive education, the number of teachers leaving their jobs increases daily. The aim of the project, …

Evidence-Based Teaching: Discourses Of Pedagogy And Positionality, Jacklyn Barry

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This critical discourse analysis (CDA) addresses the gap in research about teachers’ identities in primary schools (Rushton et al., 2023: 15). It does so by drawing upon aspects of Bernstein’s theories of the pedagogic device to explore the impact of evidence-based training practices on teachers’ positionalities in primary schools in one MAT in the South West of England. Using the prompt of brain-based interventions, how the use of research evidence might affect the ongoing development of teachers’ pedagogies was explored. Through interviews with 15 stakeholders in four primary schools, and a document analysis of ten resources related to the themes …

University Sustainability In Times Of Uncertainty: The Impact Of Brexit On Eu Staff And Students, Diane Stanley

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

The Brexit referendum in June 2016, which led to the UK’s decision to leave the European Union (EU), generated significant concern and anxiety within the United Kingdom's (UK) Higher Education (HE) sector. The potential impact on EU student and staff recruitment, EU research funding, and collaborations with Europe was uncertain, as many Brexit policies and procedures had not been considered by the government when the Leave outcome was announced. EU staff and students working and studying in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) were left contemplating their future in the UK. This thesis examines the impact of Brexit through Charles Wright …

Accuracy Analysis Of Type-2 Fuzzy System In Predicting Parkinson’S Disease Using Biomedical Voice Measures, Mehrbakhsh Nilashi, Rabab Ali Abumalloh, Hossein Ahmadi, Sarminah Samad, Sultan Alyami, Abdullah Alghamdi, Mesfer Alriq, Salma Yasmin Mohd

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative illness triggered by decreased dopamine secretion. Fuzzy logic has gained substantial attention in PD diagnosis research. PD detection using fuzzy logic has presented more precise outcomes as compared with common machine learning approaches. In this research, a hybrid method combining supervised learning, unsupervised learning and feature selection techniques is developed. In a type-1 fuzzy system, the membership functions used for the fuzzification of the crisp inputs are mapped to single numbers. However, in a type-2 fuzzy system, these numbers are represented as intervals, adding an extra dimension to the definition of the membership …

The Effects Of Language-Related Misunderstanding At Work, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Nilotpal Jha Jan 2024

The Effects Of Language-Related Misunderstanding At Work, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Nilotpal Jha

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Demographic, technological, and global trends have brought the language used at the workplace to the forefront. A growing body of research reveals that language could result in misunderstanding at work, and influence employees' performance and attitudinal outcomes. Language at work encompasses standard language (e.g., English) as well as several hybrid forms of language (non-native accents, code-switching, and jargon). We delineate how these forms of language could result in misunderstanding. We then identify relational, affective, and informational mechanisms that underlie the relationship between language-related misunderstanding and employees' performance and attitudinal outcomes, and highlight key boundary conditions. In doing so, we uncover …

Characterizing Parent-Child Interactions In Dyads With Autistic Children Using The Dyadic Parent-Child Interaction Coding System, Daniel Magin Jan 2024

Characterizing Parent-Child Interactions In Dyads With Autistic Children Using The Dyadic Parent-Child Interaction Coding System, Daniel Magin

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been steadily increasing for the past several decades, with recent estimates indicating that 1 in 36 children in the United States have an ASD diagnosis (Maenner et al., 2023). As this condition is considered a neurodevelopmental disorder, with a strong evidence base supporting early identification, intervention and parenting practices to promote social communication development, a large portion of the research has focused on identifying characteristics of parent-child interactions amongst this population and determining how best to intervene on the family level to promote the development of these skills (Ku et al., 2019). …

Geopolitics And Geospatial Strategies: The Rise Of Regulatory Supply Chain Controls For Semiconductor Gpn In Japan, South Korea And Taiwan, Yuko Aoyama, Eunyeong Song, Shan-Yu Wang Jan 2024

Geopolitics And Geospatial Strategies: The Rise Of Regulatory Supply Chain Controls For Semiconductor Gpn In Japan, South Korea And Taiwan, Yuko Aoyama, Eunyeong Song, Shan-Yu Wang

Geography

In this article, we present an analysis of how East Asian states (specifically, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) are adapting to the emerging geopolitical contexts of the 'great powers competition' between the United States and China. To the extent that the previous literature on GPN/GVC governance included the state as one of the extra-firm actors, geopolitics has not been explicitly dealt with in its role in shaping GPN/GVC governance. We build on the existing research on GPN/GVC governance and propose a shift in perspective, from one of cost-driven to diplomacy-driven governance. Taking the case of the semiconductor industry, we conduct …

[Review Of The Book Jews, Food, And Spain: The Oldest Medieval Spanish Cookbook And The Sephardic Culinary Heritage, By H. J. Piner.], Martha Daas

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you who you are. This should be the motto of any book that examines the medieval food culture of Iberia. In her new book entitled Jews, Food, and Spain, Hélène Jawhara Piñer seeks to demonstrate both the process through which the Jewish cuisine of the Iberian Middle Ages acted as a cultural identifier, and how this culinary culture has been maintained in the modern Sephardic communities. Piñer's book aims to fill the gap in Spanish culinary history by "reintegrating Jewish cuisine into the historically transmitted food heritage of …

Social Media Sanctuaries: A Discourse Analysis Of Indian International Students' Agency And Liminality During The Russian-Ukrainian Conflict, Bhavika Sicka, Nadiya Ungo, Dennis Gregory

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

This study used a social media discourse analysis approach to illuminate the narratives of Indian international students in Ukraine who experienced displacement and upheaval because of the Russo-Ukrainian war. We used agency and liminality as analytic lenses to highlight how this uniquely situated population used Facebook to navigate conflict, voice their demands, support each other, challenge hegemonic narratives, re/construct their diasporic identities, and re-orient their futures. Findings indicate that Indian international students in Ukraine displayed insurmountable courage and resilience during the war, enacting agency from the margins to amplify their voices and actuate desired futures. Furthermore, South Asian students in …

Reclaiming & Reasserting Third World Womanhoods In U.S. Higher Education, Bhavika Sicka

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

This study combines narrative inquiry with Third World feminism to bring a nuanced and scopic perspective of Third World women student experiences in US higher education. Specifically, it utilises Talpade Mohanty's concept of Third World womanhood to visibilise the experiences of five Third World international female students. Understanding womanhood as transnationally fluid and contextual, I investigate how women international students from the Third World perceive themselves to be misrepresented or homogenised in Western higher education. I also examine how gender and foreignness act as dynamic, interrelated categories in doubly‐othering this population. The purpose is to identify how Third World women …

Global South Sisterhood In Virtual Exchange: A Critical Autoethnography, Bhavika Sicka, Arzu Atajanova

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

We are two women international students from the Global South, situated in Turkey and the U.S. respectively. In this article, we utilized collaborative autoethnography to critically reflect on our intellectual, emotional, linguistic, and cultural growth during a virtual exchange program that we participated in during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this co-exploration, we analyzed our experiences and reflections as participants in a COIL program to consider, more broadly, the evolution and trajectory of virtual mobility in an uneven higher education landscape. Our virtual exchange emerged as a digital and transnational third space, unbounded by hegemonic epistemic, linguistic, or geographical borders. We …

Between The Entrepreneurial Impetus For Higher Profits And Consumer Rights Or Types Of Unfair And Misleading Commercial Practices: Insights From Bulgaria, Silviya Atanasova Topleva

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

The application of unfair misleading commercial practices affects the economic interests of consumers, threatening legal security and the achievement of market equilibrium. In response to these imbalances, the law builds a solid regulatory network for consumer protection. In the codification of the protection of consumer interests from unfair commercial practices, an important place is occupied by secondary legislation of the EU, and in particular Directive 2005/29/EC concerning unfair business-to-consumer commercial practices in the internal market. The article presents a classification of the types of unfair misleading commercial practices based on the regulatory framework at the European and national level. The …

The Impact Of The Business School Research, Kai Peters, Howard Thomas Jan 2024

The Impact Of The Business School Research, Kai Peters, Howard Thomas

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Producing high-quality research has long been an important strategic objective for business schools. Faculty research has typically been evaluated by articles appearing in highly regarded academic journals and by citation counts. Increasingly, however, government funding bodies are seeking more than just appearances in 4* journals, they are looking for meaningful societal impact. To this end researchers, in various countries, must submit case studies to funding bodies outlining concrete examples of impact in addition to the original research articles. In the future, the financial reward for high-impact case studies will significantly supersede the reward for journal prestige and citation counts.

Translanguaging Through Experiencing: The Lived Experiences Of Multilingual Learners Studying Chinese, Jiangping Cai Jan 2024

Translanguaging Through Experiencing: The Lived Experiences Of Multilingual Learners Studying Chinese, Jiangping Cai

Open Access Dissertations

Although the United States has a population with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, multilingual education has been greatly influenced by monolingual and raciolinguistic ideologies (Flores & Rosa, 2019; García, 2014; Ruiz, 1984). With world language enrollment continuing to decline (Lusin et al., 2023), investigation of the lived experiences of diverse groups of multilingual learners (MLLs) would help to understand language learning from a sociocultural perspective, and better support multilingual education and planning. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the Chinese learning experiences of native English multilingual students studying Chinese at a U.S. public university language program. The …

From Page To Stage: Enlightenment Common Sense & The Semiotics Of The Body, 1660–1820, Nilton X. Gomes

Open Access Dissertations

How did eighteenth-century audience members or novel readers come to see beyond the facades of literary characters and narrators? By looking into moments of bodily concealment in the eighteenth-century novel and theater, this dissertation examines how authors and playwrights in this period wrote with subtly and force to make the body as and in many instances more legible to their readers as the words on the page or the dialogues on the stage in attempts to suture the gap that lies between what a writer intends and what a reader grasps in a literary work. It also stresses the body’s …

Investigating The Effect Of Using Humorous Threats In Recreation Area Rules Signage To Influence Behavioral Intentions, Jacob Timothy Vargas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Communicating the importance of rules and warnings to visitors of recreational parks through signage can be difficult. However, it is one of the most important things to keep visitors safe. Oftentimes, these signs use fear of punishment or injury to discourage certain behaviors. According to studies following the Extended Parallel Processing Model (EPPM), using threats can backfire and cause visitors to use maladaptive fear responses to counteract a threat message if the content is too extreme or too psychologically close. Humor is a versatile tool that can be used to grab attention, temper perceptions, and influence decision-making. Comedians like Jon …
