Integrating Music In Pk-12 Classrooms To Impact Behavior, Improve Academics, And Support Developmental Milestones In Children, Emily Grace Manis

Honors Program Theses

As a child, music was always a part of my life, and I believe this immersion has greatly impacted how I view music’s role in the world of education. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but it wasn’t until I started courses at the University of Northern Iowa that I really decided to focus on early childhood and social emotional learning. My desire to teach, combined with my passion for all things music, led to my decision to focus on how music integration can be a useful tool in every classroom. Specifically I want to focus the research and …

Educators Remedying Linguicism Through Critical Language Awareness And Critical Trans/Multilingualism: Towards Planetary Justice, Kate Alice Garnett

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate how a critical understanding of language use, language ideologies, and linguicism can influence educators’ praxis and identities. Specifically, the research explores how Critical Language Awareness (CLA) impacts educators’ praxis, their lingua-cultural identities, and their relationships with language and linguicism towards planetary justice. These inquiries were examined through participants’ involvement in a 6-week teacher educator course designed by this researcher entitled Humane Language Education. The course aimed to enable participants to analyze and address language injustices individually, communally, and globally. Unexamined language biases erode linguistic and cultural diversity, disseminate violence and discrimination, and …

Ready Oer Not: Engaging Teachers With Student Identity Through Open Pedagogy, Emily Helton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research project centers on in-service K-12 teachers’ experiences of a continuing education course about open education resources (OER) and how to use them in ways that support students’ ability to use identity resources while engaging with disciplinary learning experiences. Using a qualitative design-based research approach, I sought to both improve the course and examine how teachers took up the ideas from the course in their planning and teaching. While OER are valuable resources for K-12 teachers in and of themselves because they are free and often available in easily adapted formats, their licensing typically allows edited versions to be …

"The Reed That Bends With The Wind Does Not Break"-The Complexities Of Multicultural Mediation And The Use Of Artistic Tools To Overcome Them, Nokukhanya Ntuli

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Mediation processes are inherently complex and require flexibility and adaptability. This is especially true for mediation processes involving multiple parties with diverse cultural backgrounds. This paper examines the complexities created by cultural diversity in mediation. The paper highlights a dispute between the local community of Msango, West Africa, and an international mining company. It highlights how linguistic and literacy barriers complicated the process, undermining effective communication and progress. The complication identified at the start of the process necessitated the process design to encompass tools to overcome the barriers identified early on. As the mediation progressed, the mediators continued to uncover …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVES: "Floaters," a common complaint among patients of all ages, was used as a query term because it affects 30% of all people searching for eye care. The American Academy of Ophthalmology website's "floaters" section was used as a source for questions and answers (www.aao.org). Floaters is a visual obstruction that moves with the movement of the eye. They can be associated with retinal detachment, which can lead to vision loss. With the advent of large language model (LLM) chatbots ChatGPT, Bard versus virtual assistants (VA), Google Assistant, and Alexa, we analyzed their responses to "floaters."

METHODS: Using AAO.org, "Public …

"Bricolage" As Comparative Research Method For Critical Legislative Innovation, Marie-Claire Belleau Jan 2024

"Bricolage" As Comparative Research Method For Critical Legislative Innovation, Marie-Claire Belleau

FIU Law Review

Comparative law incentivize imagination to create new solutions to social problems intrinsically linked to different parts of the world. It consists in the analysis of multiple legal solutions revealed by research. Meanwhile, the understanding of the documentation put forward is influenced by the social, cultural, linguistic, political, and economic context where it evolved in the first place. Consequently, the interpretation of those elements leads to varying results. In response to this reality, we offer a modest comparative methodology rooted in creativity inspired by the concept of “bricolage” for the purpose of legislative innovations. In light of some descriptive examples pertaining …

Young people who have committed a sexual offence present unique and serious challenges to the criminal justice systems of Australia and New Zealand. To understand the current state of existing literature, we systematically collated and critically appraised studies using narrative synthesis, examining the recidivism outcomes of young people who have committed a sexual offence and received treatment. Eight studies were identified utilising a sample of 1528 young people. Recidivism was higher among participants who did not complete treatment, compared to those who completed treatment, but highest in those who commenced but subsequently “dropped out”. Our findings highlight a need for …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The emerging difficulties and tensions in establishing inclusive and multicultural societies in the contemporary globalised world have necessitated the generation of ample empirical evidence in support of the socioeconomic and health benefits of racial diversity. This study contributes to the scholarly and policy discourses by examining the effect of racial diversity on mental distress in post-apartheid South Africa after several decades of racial segregation. We used all five waves (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2017) of the National Income Dynamics Survey (NIDS). After addressing the endogeneity problem in the racial diversity–mental distress nexus, our findings show that an increase in …

Cyberbullying Text Identification: A Deep Learning And Transformer-Based Language Modeling Approach, Khalid Saifullah, Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, Suhaima Jamal, Iqbal H. Sarker

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In the contemporary digital age, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube serve as vital channels for individuals to express ideas and connect with others. Despite fostering increased connectivity, these platforms have inadvertently given rise to negative behaviors, particularly cyberbullying. While extensive research has been conducted on high-resource languages such as English, there is a notable scarcity of resources for low-resource languages like Bengali, Arabic, Tamil, etc., particularly in terms of language modeling. This study addresses this gap by developing a cyberbullying text identification system called BullyFilterNeT tailored for social media texts, considering Bengali as a test case. The …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Automatic polarity prediction is a challenging assessment issue. Even though polarity assessment is a critical topic with many existing applications, it is probably not an easy challenge and faces several difficulties in natural language processing (NLP). Public polling data can give useful information, and polarity assessment or classification of comments on Twitter and Facebook may be an effective approach for gaining a better understanding of user sentiments. Text embedding techniques and models related to the artificial intelligence field and sub-fields with differing and almost accurate parameters are among the approaches available for assessing student comments. Existing state-of-the-art methodologies for sentiment …

The potential and threat of digital tools to achieve health equity has been highlighted for over a decade, but the success of achieving equitable access to health technologies remains challenging. Our paper addresses renewed concerns regarding equity in digital health access that were deepened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our viewpoint is that (1) digital health tools have the potential to improve health equity if equitable access is achieved, and (2) improving access and equity in digital health can be strengthened by considering behavioral science-based strategies embedded in all phases of tool development. Using behavioral, equity, and access frameworks allowed for …

Maps As Rhetorical Tools Of Colonial Power And Alternative Cartographies: The Americas’ Cartographic Invention, Eda Özyeşilpınar

Faculty Publications – English

This essay focuses on two historical maps as rhetorical artifacts: The Piri Reis Map of 1513 produced by the Turkish admiral Piri Reis in 1513, the Reis map, and the Map of the Island of Cuba and Surrounding Territories produced by the Cuban geographer, historian, and educator José María de la Torre y de la Torre in 1841, the de la Torre map. The Reis map demonstrates the colonial logic of Americas’ cartographic invention while the de la Torre Map is an alternative cartographic artifact disrupting the Reis map’s celebratory discourse and the settler-colonial legacy of the world heritage memory.

Loosely Defined: Neoliberalism, Democracy, And Discursive Contestation In Post-Brown Education Reform, Laura E. Kalmes

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This critical policy analysis examines how U.S. education reform in the post-Brown v.Board of Education era co-opted civil rights language to advance neoliberal and White supremacist agendas. By tracing the evolution of key terms like equality, freedom, and choice in influential policy texts from 1954 to 1965, the paper illuminates discursive strategies used to naturalize market-based reforms and deflect attention from structural racism. While focused on the U.S. context, the analysis has broad international relevance, as similar processes of rearticulating civil rights language to serve neoliberal ends can be observed in education reforms globally. The analytical framework developed here can …
