Hame, Russell Clarke

Dance (MFA) Theses

Researcher Russell Clarke contemplates the need for human belonging, looking into ways that human belonging shows up in the contemporary world. He focuses his research on main themes throughout his life that have influenced his need to belong: family, migration, dance, and his connection to the outdoors. Growing up in Scotland and later migrating to America, Clarke found his relationship with his family and dance as constant threads entangling and influencing his life—the call of his homeland is …

\The ‘I’ In Invisible\, Edgar L. Page

Dance (MFA) Theses

\the ‘I’ in Invisible\ is a work of autoethnography that looks at the Black male body as a moved site of analysis to illuminate the performance of Black masculinity in Western concert dance as a means towards social survival by highlighting perceptions and tropes of Black, male bodies in motion. It is explored by looking at the embodiment of Alvin Ailey and William Henry Lane (also known as Master Juba) as case studies. This is presented in tandem with the rendering of an embodied, 21st Century griot practice to excavate, reconstruct, and reenact the history of the past in …

Exploring Lexical Stress Perception: An Investigation Across Varied Listener Experience With Prosody, Olivia J. Pride Jan 2024

Exploring Lexical Stress Perception: An Investigation Across Varied Listener Experience With Prosody, Olivia J. Pride

Honors Theses and Capstones

Prosody is a characteristic of speech that allows others to understand emotion, emphasis, and meaning of language more deeply. Perceptual accuracy by speech-language pathologists is critical to diagnosing speech disorders. This study examined perceptual abilities of three different groups in identifying lexical stress across groups. Four SLPs, 6 SLP graduate students, and 6 untrained listeners listened to 396 audio files elicited in a prior study using the lexical stress tasks from the Prosodic Profiling Elements of Prosody in Speech-Communication (PEPS-C) and the naturalistic lexical stress (NLS) tasks. Listeners were asked if syllable stress was on the first syllable, second syllable, …

Nursing Education And Comfort Level In Caring For Patients With Eating Disorders, Jaylyn E. Jewell Jan 2024

Nursing Education And Comfort Level In Caring For Patients With Eating Disorders, Jaylyn E. Jewell

Honors Theses and Capstones

Nurses are integral to providing care to patients with eating disorders, who often present to the generalized hospital setting related to physical complications from their disorder. Despite the vital role nurses play, a lack of education is cited. This project sought to assess knowledge on eating disorders of nurses at a local hospital through dissemination of a survey. A total of n=18 responses were gathered. Results supported the fact that many nurses have received inadequate education on eating disorders, and consequently have low knowledge and competency in the care of these patients. This project seeks to identify this lack of …

Does Hookup Culture Silence Women?, Kylee Rose Rock Jan 2024

Does Hookup Culture Silence Women?, Kylee Rose Rock

Honors Theses and Capstones

The issue of hookup culture on college campuses is of concern to many feminist scholars, given the alarming rates of sexual assault and unsafe sexual experiences in the college setting. This essay argues that hookup culture has the ability to silence women by means of the social landscape which college-aged adults find themselves in today. Further, this essay examines the social experiences of young women on college campuses, and advocates for a change in social habits and scripts through reconsidering our approach to the anti-porn movement in today’s modern culture. Drawing upon literature from Rae Langton’s work, "Speech Acts and …

Word Prediction Using Dynamic Skip Connections Along With Arabert And Lstm In Arabic Language, Ahad Almalki, Faris Kateb, Rayan Mosli

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Natural Language Generation (NLG) plays a crucial role in modern digital tools, including chatbots, virtual support, content suggestions, and tailored marketing, making bots more responsive and reducing the need for human staff. While there's much research on NLG for languages like English, languages like Arabic, Urdu, and Chinese still face challenges. This study examines Arabic NLG's unique aspects, dialects, and word variations. With around 420 million Arabic speakers globally, it's crucial to advance NLG for this language. We compared three models: Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), a mix of Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and LSTM, and a version that …

Improving School Climate: The Impact Of A Perma-Based Intervention On Educators' Well-Being And Emotional Intelligence, Jennifer Andrews Kenney

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

Research has demonstrated that the condition of a school’s climate substantially influences student outcomes. This study investigated the factors influencing a sub-optimal school climate in a rural school. Results indicated that educators’ unmet social and emotional needs and an absence of well-being support influenced the quality of the school climate. To address this problem, this study examined the impact of an eight-week PERMA-based multicomponent positive psychology intervention (MPPI) on rural educators’ well-being, emotional intelligence (EI), and professional practice. The participants consisted of 13 rural educators. Using a convergent mixed methods research design, the researcher merged quantitative data comprising pre-test and …

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq Jan 2024

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The Supreme Court relies increasingly on anti-classification rules to implement the Constitution’s commands of even-handed state treatment. These rules direct attention to whether an instance of a forbidden classification is present on the face of a challenged law. They contain two necessary steps. First, a court defines a general category of impermissible terms. Second, a court ascertains whether an instance of the category is found in enacted text—triggering the familiar strict scrutiny analysis. So defined, anti-classification rules now dominate Equal Protection, Free Speech, ‘dormant’ Commerce Clause, and even Free Exercise jurisprudence. The Roberts Court celebrates them as “commonsense,” citing their …

“Share The Fear”: Communication Concerns Of Parents With Cancer With Dependents And Coparents: A Qualitative Needs Assessment Study, Cinzia Caparso, Zoe Bowen, Sung Won Choi Jan 2024

“Share The Fear”: Communication Concerns Of Parents With Cancer With Dependents And Coparents: A Qualitative Needs Assessment Study, Cinzia Caparso, Zoe Bowen, Sung Won Choi

Nursing Faculty Research Publications

Background: The estimated 1.6 million adults in the United States with cancer who also have dependents face unique challenges given the profound impact of cancer on their families, such as increased psychological distress, decreased quality of life, and altered family functioning. Unfortunately, little is known about the mutual cancer-related communication concerns for the perspectives of the parents with cancer or the coparents. Coparents care for the patient and dependents until they reach adulthood (e.g., unmarried, divorced, stepparent, and/or same-sex partnerships).

Objective: To understand the mutual cancer-related communication concerns from the perspectives of parents with cancer and the coparents and intervention …

On The Potential Benefits Of Wide Dynamic Range Compression For Workers In Loud Environments: A Scoping Literature Review, Solenn Ollivier, Hugues Nélisse, Jeremie Voix

Revues de littérature, synthèses de connaissances

This literature review investigates the application of wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) to enhance hearing protection and communication among workers in a noisy environment. Given the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss, there is a major need to provide workers, with or at risk of hearing loss, with a solution that not only protects their hearing but also facilitates effective communication. WDRC, which amplifies softer sounds while limiting louder sounds, appears a promising approach. This review explores 46 articles investigating WDRC performance on speech intelligibility and loudness perception in noise for individuals with normal hearing or mild to moderate hearing loss. …

Background: The use of feedback to address gaps and reinforce skills is a key component of successful competency-based mental health and psychosocial support intervention training approaches. Competency-based feedback during training and supervision for personnel delivering psychological interventions is vital for safe and effective care.

Aims: For non-specialists trained in low-resource settings, there is a lack of standardised feedback systems. This study explores perspectives on competency-based feedback, using structured role-plays that are featured on the Ensuring Quality in Psychosocial and Mental Health Care (EQUIP) platform developed by the World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund.

Method: Qualitative data were collected …

Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez Jan 2024

Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

This chapter unearths some of the diverse attitudes towards Spanish of a third-generation child in Los Angeles (L.A.), California, her family members, and school personnel. L.A. is a tension-ridden contact zone (Pratt, 1991) where Spanish has traditionally been subjugated and is still a lesser-taught language (LTL) despite decades of research showing that bilingual education positively impacts student attitudes (Potowski & Muñoz-Basols, 2020). Lack of continuity (Caloi & Torregrossa, 2021) in formal instruction and inconsistent heritage Spanish use in the home may entail divergent attitudes towards Spanish, possibly hindering multigenerational transmission. Decades-long turbulent California language policies (CLP) (Macias, 2001) have consistently …

Metaontological Dismissive Strategies: Implications And Applications In Metaphysics Of Race And Gender, Ethan F. Stumpp Jan 2024

Metaontological Dismissive Strategies: Implications And Applications In Metaphysics Of Race And Gender, Ethan F. Stumpp

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Metaontological discourse, inquiring into the nature, methodology, and aims of ontology, has functioned as the war ground for those skeptical of ontological projects against those who believe that ontological inquiry is substantive (i.e., meaningful, important, worth pursuing). I call the inquiry which engages in determining criteria to distinguish substantive from nonsubstantive inquiry/discourse: “the metaphysics of discourse”. In this project, I identify three frameworks in the metaphysics of discourse: Easy Ontology, The “Merely Verbal” Framework, and Metaphysical Structuralism. My primary concern is to show that these discourse frameworks or dismissive strategies all fail to provide sufficient criteria to properly delineate substantive …

The Major Questions Doctrine At The Boundaries Of Interpretive Law, Daniel E. Walters Jan 2024

The Major Questions Doctrine At The Boundaries Of Interpretive Law, Daniel E. Walters

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court’s apparent transformation of the major questions doctrine into a clear statement rule demanding clear congressional authorization for “major” agency actions has already had, and will continue to have, wide-ranging impacts on American public law. Not the least of these is the impact it will have on the enterprise of statutory interpretation. Indeed, while it is easy to focus on the policy repercussions of a newly constrained Congress and newly hamstrung administrative state, this Article argues that equally important is the novel precedent that is set in this particular formulation of a clear statement rule, which stands almost …
