Federalism: Analyses Of Economic Effects Of Domestic Violence On Interstate Commerce Under The U.S. Constitution, Olawale Olumodimu Jan 2024

Federalism: Analyses Of Economic Effects Of Domestic Violence On Interstate Commerce Under The U.S. Constitution, Olawale Olumodimu

Saint Louis University Law Journal

This work explains that there are instances where congressional intent may necessitate immediate or sporadic regulation of local or intrastate activities. However, when Congress does act or takes steps to regulate a necessary local or intrastate activity, it must do so only if it is constitutionally proper and when it does not lead to the unfettered accumulation of states’ plenary powers and does not violate the enumeration of constitutional powers. This work bifurcates the U.S. Supreme Court cases on the Commerce Clause into the formalist and realist approaches as provided under Article 1. Section 8, Clause 3 of the Constitution. …

I taught ‘Curriculum Teaching and Learning’ as one of the master-level courses that enables course participants to broaden their understanding of curriculum models, teaching, learning and assessment approaches. The assignment required participants to choose a topic in their subject area, review relevant literature, and identify challenges faced by teachers and students during teaching and learning that topic.
In addition, course participants were asked to list misconceptions students possess regarding the relevant topics and explore possible solutions and recommendations to address the identified challenges and misconceptions. Thus, the course participants developed learning resources (lesson plans) using the 5E model (Engage, Explore, …

Strategic Diplomacy: The Singapore Case, Country Report For The Project On ‘Strategic Diplomacy For 21st Century Defence And Statecraft’, Evelyn Goh, Wee-Kiat Lim Jan 2024

Strategic Diplomacy: The Singapore Case, Country Report For The Project On ‘Strategic Diplomacy For 21st Century Defence And Statecraft’, Evelyn Goh, Wee-Kiat Lim

CCX Research

How does Singapore conduct strategic diplomacy despite being a small and constrained state? This report first identifies the major long-term drivers affecting Singapore’s security, both at the domestic level (rapidly ageing population, immigrant assimilation, and growing societal fault-lines) and at the international or systemic level (changing global order, power of technology, slow collective action on climate change). Then it analyses how Singapore strategists deal with two of their most prominent problem-sets: (i) positioning Singapore in relation to the US-China rivalry and the changing international order; and (ii) tackling climate change as a collective action problem. Both problem-sets illustrate how Singapore …

Analyzing The Use Of Plain Language In Brief Summaries On Clinicaltrials.Gov, Megan J. Eddington Jan 2024

Analyzing The Use Of Plain Language In Brief Summaries On Clinicaltrials.Gov, Megan J. Eddington

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

ClinicalTrials.gov is a database designed to help clinical researchers make their research publicly available. The clinical trials registered on the database each include a brief summary, which is meant to be a short description that the public can easily understand. In September 2022, ClinicalTrials.gov published a "Plain Language Checklist for Lay Brief Summaries" on their website, which identifies plain language best practices intended to help investigators craft summaries that can be readily understood by the public. This thesis assesses the impact of the checklist on the language use in the brief summaries in the year following the checklist's publication. The …

(Plant)Ing Traditional Roots: Exploring An Impact Of Environmental Shifts On Traditional Phytotherapy Practices In The Cusco Region Of Perú, Nicole Elizabeth Wilmot

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the potential outcomes of environmental shifts on plant-based medical practices in the Cusco region of Peru. Located in the Andes mountain range, at a high elevation, the environment varies immensely, specifically in the various types of native plants in the region. Historically, using plants as natural forms of medicine or healthcare has been deeply rooted in many indigenous communities, traditions, and cultures globally. Environmentally, there have been potential changes and shifts in temperature, water, and soil that affect the nutrition and health of plants to maintain their beneficial properties. Due to various factors, adaptations or shifts to …

Exploring The Association Between Epistemic Emotions And Engagement In Early Engineering Design Tasks, Michael Guglielmo, Christopher Costello, Yvette Kim Jan 2024

Exploring The Association Between Epistemic Emotions And Engagement In Early Engineering Design Tasks, Michael Guglielmo, Christopher Costello, Yvette Kim

Research Days Posters 2024

Research has shown that students who are interested in engineering design tasks early in their lives are more likely to become engineers. Importantly, kids tend to be more engaged with activities that elicit positive emotions (Hammond, 2014). Our purpose is to try fostering higher levels of engagement in engineering design tasks by observing how each step is associated with positive or negative epistemic emotions. We observed video recordings of six families engaged in different engineering tasks in their home environments. The videos were coded to categorize a range of different emotions throughout the activity. We hypothesize that activities involving physical …

Enhancing Intimate Partner Violence Assessments: Creating Equitable Tools For Spanish-Speaking Communities, Alberto D. Torres-Aragón, Quinn Hendershot, Matthew D. Johnson Jan 2024

Enhancing Intimate Partner Violence Assessments: Creating Equitable Tools For Spanish-Speaking Communities, Alberto D. Torres-Aragón, Quinn Hendershot, Matthew D. Johnson

Research Days Posters 2024

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is abuse or aggression within a romantic relationship. To prevent severe consequences, assessment is needed to understand IPV in its entirety prior to putting an intervention into place. English speakers in the United States have numerous instruments available, but there is a much more limited selection for Spanish speakers (Hendershot et al. under review). Herein, this research aims to discuss the best practices and importance for assessment in IPV while highlighting our ongoing efforts in IPV assessment through creating a measure. This initiative is crucial as it broadens the scope of IPV research and intervention strategies, …

Goddess, Murderess, Doctress: An Exploration Of The English Suffix “-Ess” And Its Decline In Use, Douglas Digregorio Jan 2024

Goddess, Murderess, Doctress: An Exploration Of The English Suffix “-Ess” And Its Decline In Use, Douglas Digregorio

Research Days Posters 2024

The suffix “-ess” is used to create feminine forms of masculine or gender-neutral nouns in English. However, contemporary usage increasingly favors unmarked, gender-neutral forms for female referents in favor of these explicitly marked feminine forms. Drawing on data from Google’s Ngram Viewer and insights from gender studies and linguistics, this research examines and accounts for the decline in use of words suffixed in “-ess.” This analysis contends that the decline is driven by factors including increasing equality in the workforce, negative associations of words suffixed with “-ess” such as “mistress” and “adultress,” and a rejection of male-centric language norms. The …

Memorable & Demeaning: Rugby Nicknaming Culture In Upstate New York, Benjamin Miller Jan 2024

Memorable & Demeaning: Rugby Nicknaming Culture In Upstate New York, Benjamin Miller

Research Days Posters 2024

Rugby’s social culture in the United States is rare topic of anthropological interest. Similarly, nicknaming conventions have infrequently been acknowledged as an anthropological phenomenon despite being a critical aspect of the way humans conceptualize each other and create group identities. Nicknames among rugby players are usually pejorative, sexually vulgar, and profane. These nicknames stem from two main factors: situational experiences and the personal characteristics of the player. Through participant observation ethnography, I document nicknaming practices among a variety of rugby players in upstate New York. This paper uses four original case studies to illustrate four major rugby nicknaming concepts: origins, …

Therapy Talk On Therapytok: Psychotherapeutic Discourse On Social Media, Catherine Marin Jan 2024

Therapy Talk On Therapytok: Psychotherapeutic Discourse On Social Media, Catherine Marin

Research Days Posters 2024

Therapy-talk is a discursive framework which subtends modern conceptions of mental healthcare. Normatively, this takes place within the spatiotemporal moment of the therapy session, a clinical environment in which the therapist occupies an authority role and administers treatment to their patient. However, the Unites States faces an ongoing mental health crisis which is magnified by racialized and class-based disparities in access to treatment. This has led to the proliferation of non-normative and often digital approaches to treatment. One such approach involves the development of mental health communities on various social media platforms. On TikTok, this community is sometimes called TherapyTok, …

How Sympathy Lost Its Luster: A Linguistic And Cultural Review, Zona Huang Jan 2024

How Sympathy Lost Its Luster: A Linguistic And Cultural Review, Zona Huang

Research Days Posters 2024

Since the mid-20th century, the term, “empathy” has gained widespread usage and applause as a cultural virtue. In recent decades, its usage has even surpassed sympathy, which has been in English for centuries longer. While sympathy was once praised as a source of social harmony, it is increasingly associated with attitudes of pity and condensation. Whereas sympathy currently involves feeling for the sufferer, empathy requires putting yourself in the shoes of another. It is clear sympathy has undergone a semantic shift, the linguistic term for when a word takes on additional meanings over time. But how and when did this …

On Grooming: Fostering Selective Empathy Through Language In American Conservative Media, Alexander Jordan Jan 2024

On Grooming: Fostering Selective Empathy Through Language In American Conservative Media, Alexander Jordan

Research Days Posters 2024

The contemporary landscape of American conservative politics is one largely marred by visceral appeals to emotion. Phrases such as “grooming” have become a staple of modern conservative media, capable of evoking strong negative emotions and falsely portraying groups such as non-LGBT individuals, white individuals, Christians, and especially children as under threat. This research seeks to explore the evolution of how this language has been utilized to create a sense of “selective empathy” in American conservatives, with particular emphasis on the cultural shift surrounding the 2016 presidential election. Through analysis of the works of multiple conservative figures, think tanks, and media …

The Controversies Of Specimens Of Oriental Manuscripts, Qian Jiang Jan 2024

The Controversies Of Specimens Of Oriental Manuscripts, Qian Jiang

Research Days Posters 2024

Have you ever wanted to chop up a bunch of ancient books? In 1928, George M.L. Brown cut up a bunch of rare manuscripts from Asia and published them into a book, which was just a box of folders containing scattered pages. He called this book, Specimens of Oriental Manuscripts. This research uses Brown and Specimens of Oriental Manuscripts to explore the history of “Orientalism,” examining how traces of Brown’s racist views of these specimens and their origins are left behind, both in his introductory descriptions and the treatment of the manuscripts. This project also compares Brown and this book …

Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Decade In Review, Elizabeth A. Solis Jan 2024

Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Decade In Review, Elizabeth A. Solis

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Despite the establishment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2000, the state and prevalence of human trafficking in the United States has greatly increased. While information and legislation exist, it still remains an under-researched and under-evaluated issue. This study looks through the enacted human trafficking federal legislation over the last decade to track whether migrant vulnerability to human trafficking has been further addressed with the evolution of the issue within the country. To provide a relevant analysis, this study will examine human trafficking legislation through the years of 2013-2023 and will focus on the main research question of …

Recovering And Reclaiming Linguistic And Cultural Identities: Revealing Skoo Haints Through The Black Storytelling Tradition, Lisa Marie Westbrooks Jan 2024

Recovering And Reclaiming Linguistic And Cultural Identities: Revealing Skoo Haints Through The Black Storytelling Tradition, Lisa Marie Westbrooks

Wayne State University Dissertations

This qualitative study uses the first person, “I” to explore the Black Storytelling Tradition as method and methodology. As a Black scholar I centered my grandfather’s empirical knowledge of haints (a metaphor for demoralizing, oppressive, colonizing, and assimilating societal and educational practices upheld by the dominant class) and my empirical teacher knowledge as an American Descendant of Slavery (ADOS) as the site of inquiry. In utilizing the Black Storytelling Tradition, I share interconnected stories, poems, dreams, “memorys”, “rememorys”, stream of consciousness, and sketches that demonstrate how haints shaped the navigation of my heritage language (African American Language, AAL) and my …

Rediscovering Zoram: The Chief NaʿAr Of The Commander Of The Fortress, Kelly N. Schaeffer-Bullock

BYU Studies

There are several prominent figures in the opening chapters of the Book of Mormon whose roles, responsibilities, and titles may have eluded the modern reader. As more is learned about ancient Israelite laws, customs, and culture through archaeological successes and academic research, previous biblical scholarship is reworked, refined, or totally redesigned. So too with academic scholarship on the Book of Mormon. The way readers understand the central figures in the opening chapters of the Book of Mormon must be regularly reassessed as additional information is obtained. There is still a great deal more to discover about the people who played …

The Semantic Complexity Of Financial Disclosures, Abhinav Anand, Sankarshan Basu, Xing Huan, Jalaj Pathak Jan 2024

The Semantic Complexity Of Financial Disclosures, Abhinav Anand, Sankarshan Basu, Xing Huan, Jalaj Pathak

Working Papers

We quantify the semantic complexity of firms’ financial disclosures by capturing the connotation-altering impact of ‘valence shifters,’ which include adjectives (e.g., ‘tiny’), ad verbs (e.g., ‘barely’), negators (e.g., ‘cannot’), and adversative conjunctions (e.g., ‘but,’ ‘although’) that significantly modify the interpretation of sentences. The semantic complex ity index (SCI) of a disclosure is defined as the proportion of sentences in the text containing at least one valence shifter. We show that an increase in disclosures’ semantic complexity corresponds to significantly higher post-filing return volatility, indicating increased uncer tainty among market participants. Our metric also renders most other competing measures insignificant in …

Alcarràs, El Darrer Préssec: Una Aproximació Des Dels Food Studies, Neus Penalba Suárez

Tracing The Desert Island: Atlantis, Unknowability, And Colonial Imagination, Edwige Crucifix Jan 2024

Tracing The Desert Island: Atlantis, Unknowability, And Colonial Imagination, Edwige Crucifix

French and Francophone Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship

This contribution studies the myth of the desert-ocean in Pierre Benoit’s 1919 [1920] hit novel L’Atlantide. Locating the mythical lost continent in the Sahara, the novel catered to the period’s exoticism while serving colonial ideology. While the desert was materially crucial for the Empire, it also provided new symbolic ground, becoming a favored locus of the colonial imagination as a site of extreme hostility, due as much to its climate as to its anticolonial activity. As the ultimate colonial fantasy, the desert also paradoxically provided fertile ground for a contrapuntal utopian discourse, apparent when reading Benoit’s novel in light …

Viennese Japonismus And Modern Allegory In The Work Of Gustav Klimt, Anna-Marie Moblard Meier Jan 2024

Viennese Japonismus And Modern Allegory In The Work Of Gustav Klimt, Anna-Marie Moblard Meier

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines Viennese Japonismus and modern allegory in the work of Gustav Klimt. One of the paradoxical ambitions of Vienna’s early visual modernists was the creation of a new art that would, nevertheless, revive the essence of tradition, creating a collective aesthetic that crossed national and historical boundaries. Klimt and his close collaborators, like Josef Hoffmann, and artists engaged in the broader context of central Europe, like Emil Orlik, believed that Japanese art presented a viable path toward a universal, modern visual language. This conception arose from layers of exoticism, primitivism, Orientalism, and genuine encounter with old and new …

Exploring Racially Informed Factors And Assessing Their Impacts On The Working Conditions And Burnout Among Bicultural Asian Human Service Workers, Isabel Sangeun Lee Jan 2024

Exploring Racially Informed Factors And Assessing Their Impacts On The Working Conditions And Burnout Among Bicultural Asian Human Service Workers, Isabel Sangeun Lee

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The United States has undergone a significant increase in cultural diversity, with Asians being the fastest-growing immigrant group. Their population has almost doubled from 11.9 million in 2000 to 22.4 million in 2019, marking an 88% increase in less than two decades. Presently, Asians make up 6% of the total U.S. population and are estimated to grow to 46 million by 2060, representing over 10% of the U.S. population. Asians are often considered a model minority due to their higher educational and health status compared to other minority groups. However, they are still perceived as "perpetual foreigners" regardless of their …

Survey Of Planar And Outerplanar Graphs In Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Graphs, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

As many readers may know, graph theory is a fundamental branch of mathematics that explores networks made up of nodes and edges, focusing on their paths, structures, and properties [196]. A planar graph is one that can be drawn on a plane without any edges intersecting, ensuring planarity. Outerplanar graphs, a subset of planar graphs, have all their vertices located on the boundary of the outer face in their planar embedding. In recent years, outerplanar graphs have been formally defined within the context of fuzzy graphs. To capture uncertain parameters and concepts, various graphs such as fuzzy, neutrosophic, Turiyam, and …

An Explainable Approach To Understanding Gender Stereotype Text, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2024

An Explainable Approach To Understanding Gender Stereotype Text, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference Papers

Gender Stereotypes refer to the widely held beliefs and assumptions about the typical traits, behaviours, and roles associated with a collective group of individuals of a particular gender in society. These typical beliefs about how people of a particular gender are described in text can cause harmful effects to individuals leading to unfair treatment. In this research, the aim is to identify the words and language constructs that can influence a text to be considered a gender stereotype. To do so, a transformer model with attention is fine-tuned for gender stereotype detection. Thereafter, words/language constructs used for the model's decision …

Assessing Teachers’ Dispositions Towards Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Northwest Arkansas High Schools, Rylie Ford Jan 2024

Assessing Teachers’ Dispositions Towards Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Northwest Arkansas High Schools, Rylie Ford

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) entails the use of cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and learning styles of ethnically and culturally diverse students to make instruction more relevant and effective for them. Furthermore, practices within this pedagogy are validating, inclusive, emancipatory, and ethical, and help diverse students succeed academically while maintaining their cultural identity. Numerous studies have indicated that using culturally responsive pedagogy increases student academic achievement, sense of self, and emotional well-being (Ladson-Billings, 1995a; Gay, 2018). Considering the varying degrees of cultural and linguistic diversity in Northwest Arkansas (NWA) schools and the lack of reported professional development relating to CRP, this …
