"And I / Am The Arrow": The Narrative, Personae Construction, And Language Ideology Of Confessional Poets' Identity Performance, Madison Fuchs Jan 2024

"And I / Am The Arrow": The Narrative, Personae Construction, And Language Ideology Of Confessional Poets' Identity Performance, Madison Fuchs

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This thesis argues for consideration of linguistic features in service of raising the postmodern confessionalist poet identity as an utterance and an act of loyalty to performance. The embodiment of the confessionalist identity, attributed to the features used to adhere to the confessional mode, is realized through the invention of confessional personae. These confessional personae merge the responsibilities of the speaker and the narrator to convey a pseudo-autobiographical utterance to a designated audience. In this thesis, I analyze a sequence of poems that either possess taboo subjects or utilize linguistic functions, like indexicality and audience design, that mark its mode. …

Stock Price Trend Prediction Using Emotion Analysis Of Financial Headlines With Distilled Llm Model, Rithesh H. Bhat Jan 2024

Stock Price Trend Prediction Using Emotion Analysis Of Financial Headlines With Distilled Llm Model, Rithesh H. Bhat

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Capturing the volatility of stock prices helps individual traders, stock analysts, and institutions alike increase their returns in the stock market. Financial news headlines have been shown to have a significant effect on stock price mobility. Lately, many financial portals have restricted web scraping of stock prices and other related financial data of companies from their websites. In this study we demonstrate that emotion analysis of financial news headlines alone can be sufficient in predicting stock price movement, even in the absence of any financial data. We propose an approach that eliminates the need for web scraping of financial data. …

Content Moderation On Social Media: Social And Computational Standards And Implications, Mohit Singhal

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Social media has become a powerful tool that reflects human communication's best and worst aspects. They allow individuals to freely express opinions, communicate with others, and learn about new stories. On the other hand, they have become fertile grounds for several forms of abuse, harassment, and the dissemination of misinformation. Social media platforms have established and employed content moderation to counteract the spread of abuse and misinformation.

Some critical challenges hinder the understanding of the social media content moderation ecosystem. This dissertation investigates various aspects of content moderation, including their coverage, fairness, and effectiveness. Firstly, it investigates how, in practice, …

Natural Language Generation From Large-Scale Open-Domain Knowledge Graphs, Xiao Shi Jan 2024

Natural Language Generation From Large-Scale Open-Domain Knowledge Graphs, Xiao Shi

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation delves into the realm of natural language generation (NLG) from expansive open-domain knowledge graphs, aiming to bridge the gap between existing methods primarily tested on limited datasets and the demands of real-world large-scale, diverse graph structures. Prior works in NLG often relied on small-scale or restricted datasets, neglecting the complexities of broader knowledge graphs. To address this, we introduce a new dataset called GraphNarrative, designed to encompass a wide range of graph structures and enhance the realism of NLG tasks.

The core contribution of this research lies in devising a novel approach to mitigating information hallucination, a common …

Claim Sensing: A Study Linking Factual Claims To Human Behaviors On Social Media, Zeyu Zhang Jan 2024

Claim Sensing: A Study Linking Factual Claims To Human Behaviors On Social Media, Zeyu Zhang

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The ubiquity of social media has transformed it into a rich source for reflecting people's opinions, behaviors, and interactions. Users frequently encounter factual claims in news, stories, and political statements, which can be either true or false. These claims significantly shape people's minds and behaviors, influencing not only individual perspectives but also broader public discourse. This study explores individuals' behaviors and perceptions toward factual claims by leveraging the concept of "check-worthiness" to analyze the relationship between such claims and user behaviors across datasets containing tens of millions of social media posts, particularly tweets from the platform X (formerly Twitter). It …

Gaps And Overlaps In Conversation: Analyses Of Differentiating Factors, David W. Edwards Jan 2024

Gaps And Overlaps In Conversation: Analyses Of Differentiating Factors, David W. Edwards

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Human social behavior relies on communication, and much of that communication occurs in conversation. A crucial feature of conversation is turn-taking, the (usually) orderly pattern of listening and speaking that humans employ in conversation. In analyzing details of actual conversations, Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson (1974) launched the field of Conversation Analysis by outlining a set of observations of turn-taking behavior and by proposing a list of rules to explain that behavior. They noted that the vast majority of transitions from one speaker to another happen with very little gap or overlap (Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson 1974: 700–701). More recently, researchers …

Attraction Effects In Referential Dependencies, Emily Graham Jan 2024

Attraction Effects In Referential Dependencies, Emily Graham

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores the differences in the real-time processing of long-distance dependencies and how the processing of these dependencies functions within a cue-based retrieval model. During subject-verb agreement (SVA) comprehension, the processing of the verb is influenced by attractor noun phrases (NPs) that cannot control agreement. Referential dependencies, however, are less susceptible to such attraction effects. Many studies examining ungrammatical sentences in which a reflexive or pronoun mismatches with its antecedent in number/gender have indicated that the processing of these referentially dependent elements is largely uninfluenced by grammatically unavailable attractor NPs. These disparities have been taken to indicate that SVA …

Doctor Or Ai? Efficient Neural Network For Response Classification In Health Consultations, Olumide E. Ojo, Olaronke O. Adebanji, Hiram Calvo, Alexander Gelbukh, Anna Feldman, Ofir Ben Shoham Jan 2024

Doctor Or Ai? Efficient Neural Network For Response Classification In Health Consultations, Olumide E. Ojo, Olaronke O. Adebanji, Hiram Calvo, Alexander Gelbukh, Anna Feldman, Ofir Ben Shoham

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Patients seek quality healthcare because they trust their doctors and the healthcare system. However, the use of AI models in medical consultations has undermined this trust. AI systems typically depend on accurate and large volumes of data for training, but in cases of insufficient or incorrect data, this can lead to incomplete or flawed outputs. The inaccuracies in the response generated by AI systems may result in biased outcomes, compromising patient care and further eroding the trust patients place in the healthcare system. In this paper, we describe an innovative approach to distinguishing between responses generated by AI and those …

Report On The Multilingual Euphemism Detection Task, Patrick Lee, Anna Feldman

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper presents the Multilingual Euphemism Detection Shared Task for the Fourth Workshop on Figurative Language Processing (FigLang 2024) held in conjunction with NAACL 2024. Participants were invited to attempt the euphemism detection task on four different languages (American English, global Spanish, Yorùbá, and Mandarin Chinese): given input text containing a potentially euphemistic term (PET), determine if its use is euphemistic or not. We present the expanded datasets used for the shared task, summarize each team’s methods and findings, and analyze potential implications for future research.

Meds For Pets: Multilingual Euphemism Disambiguation For Potentially Euphemistic Terms, Patrick Lee, Alain Chirino Trujillo, Diana Cuevas Plancarte, Olumide Ebenezer Ojo, Xinyi Liu, Iyanuoluwa Shode, Yuan Zhao, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman Jan 2024

Meds For Pets: Multilingual Euphemism Disambiguation For Potentially Euphemistic Terms, Patrick Lee, Alain Chirino Trujillo, Diana Cuevas Plancarte, Olumide Ebenezer Ojo, Xinyi Liu, Iyanuoluwa Shode, Yuan Zhao, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study investigates the computational processing of euphemisms, a universal linguistic phenomenon, across multiple languages. We train a multilingual transformer model (XLM-RoBERTa) to disambiguate potentially euphemistic terms (PETs) in multilingual and cross-lingual settings. In line with current trends, we demonstrate that zero-shot learning across languages takes place. We also show cases where multilingual models perform better on the task compared to monolingual models by a statistically significant margin, indicating that multilingual data presents additional opportunities for models to learn about cross-lingual, computational properties of euphemisms. In a follow-up analysis, we focus on universal euphemistic “categories” such as death and bodily …

Using Generative Large Language Models For Hierarchical Relationship Prediction In Medical Ontologies, Hao Liu, Shuxin Zhou, Zhehuan Chen, Yehoshua Perl, Jiayin Wang

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study extends the exploration of ontology enrichment by evaluating the performance of various open-sourced Large Language Models (LLMs) on the task of predicting hierarchical relationships (IS-A) in medical ontologies including SNOMED CT Clinical Finding and Procedure hierarchies and the human Disease Ontology. With the previous finetuned BERT models for hierarchical relationship prediction as the baseline, we assessed eight open-source generative LLMs for the same task. We observed only three models, without finetuning, demonstrated comparable or superior performance compared to the baseline BERT -based models. The best performance model OpenChat achieved a macro average F1 score of 0.96 (0.95) on …

Turkish Delights: A Dataset On Turkish Euphemisms, Hasan Can Biyik, Patrick Lee, Anna Feldman Jan 2024

Turkish Delights: A Dataset On Turkish Euphemisms, Hasan Can Biyik, Patrick Lee, Anna Feldman

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Euphemisms are a form of figurative language relatively understudied in natural language processing. This research extends the current computational work on potentially euphemistic terms (PETs) to Turkish. We introduce the Turkish PET dataset, the first available of its kind in the field. By creating a list of euphemisms in Turkish, collecting example contexts, and annotating them, we provide both euphemistic and non-euphemistic examples of PETs in Turkish. We describe the dataset and methodologies, and also experiment with transformer-based models on Turkish euphemism detection by using our dataset for binary classification. We compare performances across models using F1, accuracy, and precision …

Can Litigation Analytics Tell Us What Became Of The 2015 Proportionality Amendments To The Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure?, Patricia W. Moore Jan 2024

Can Litigation Analytics Tell Us What Became Of The 2015 Proportionality Amendments To The Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure?, Patricia W. Moore

Faculty Articles

In 2015, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure pertaining to discovery were amended for the seventh time in 40 years–part of a cyclic effort to address the so-called “cost and delay” of litigation. The centerpiece of the amendments was the reconfigured requirement that requested discovery be “proportional to the needs of the case,” in addition to being relevant and nonprivileged. The concept of “proportionality” crystallized the 2015 amendments in a single mantra. The proposed amendments inspired passionate and polarized public reactions. Plaintiffs’ attorneys opposed them as an impediment to obtaining the discovery they needed to prove their case, particularly in …

Oil & Gas And Corpus Linguistics, Chad J. Pomeroy Jan 2024

Oil & Gas And Corpus Linguistics, Chad J. Pomeroy

Faculty Articles

Oil and gas law focuses on the subsurface mineral estate, which is just what it sounds like: the estate that entitles one to the subsurface, to the stuff that is underground. That, of course, includes the minerals under a given piece of property, and the value associated with that is enormous. So, it is a big deal to have the right to minerals, and, if I convey to you "the mineral estate" of Blackacre or "the minerals under Blackacre" or something similar, then I have given you something very significant, indeed. As such, it is critical to know just what …

Applying Executive Function For The Sake Of Well-Being: A Case Study Of Gifted Middle School Students, Erika Lucas Jan 2024

Applying Executive Function For The Sake Of Well-Being: A Case Study Of Gifted Middle School Students, Erika Lucas

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

This study provided gifted middle school student participants the opportunity to discuss the complexities of gifted culture in academia as they have experienced it. This study also sought to pinpoint the emotions or feelings that students and their parents experienced as they transition to high school concerning their perceived sense of confidence and readiness as it pertained to executive function. Gen Z students deemed "gifted" are at a higher risk for depression and suicide due to the rising levels of stress and anxiety they experience (Andrews, 2014). Klimkeit et al. (2011) discovered that teenagers with depression and/or anxiety disorders exhibited …

Exploring Perceptions Of Self-Compassion In Individuals With Complex Trauma Symptomology: A Qualitative Approach, Brooke Roseman Jan 2024

Exploring Perceptions Of Self-Compassion In Individuals With Complex Trauma Symptomology: A Qualitative Approach, Brooke Roseman

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

The aim of the present study sought to explore the perceptions of self-compassion through the perspectives of individuals who experience complex trauma symptomology and low rates of self-compassion to inform and enhance trauma treatment. Despite a growing accumulation of studies implicating self-compassion as an integral construct for alleviating symptoms associated with complex trauma, most research designs were quantitative and did not investigate the internal processes occurring within the individual. Based on this gap, the current study expanded the scope of the current literature to include a qualitative thematic analytic approach to better understand the nuances of how this population relates …

The reading wars in American education have raged on with the most recent Science of Reading movement, with the discussion centered around phonics. This qualitative case study examined a real first-grade class as they experienced explicit phonics instruction within the context of a classroom environment in public elementary school in northeastern United States. Participants of this study included eight first-grade students and one first-grade teacher, in one first-grade class. Data collection was broken down into two phases that were rooted in Social Constructivism’s Zone of Proximal Development and Ehri’s Phases of Word Learning Theory. Phase I consisted of classroom observations …

The Interactive Read-Aloud: A Case Study Of Children With Intellectual Disabilities, Christine Cuozzo Jan 2024

The Interactive Read-Aloud: A Case Study Of Children With Intellectual Disabilities, Christine Cuozzo

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Interactive read-alouds engage children in active thinking while reading, with the overall purpose of helping them understand that text should make sense (Scanlon et al., 2017). During an interactive read-aloud, adult readers read books aloud to children and include comments and questions before, during, and after reading aloud to initiate conversations. Discussions and transactions with text can also occur spontaneously (Scanlon et al., 2017). A paucity of research exists on how children with intellectual disabilities (ID) experience interactive read-alouds. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to determine how children with ID experience interactive read-alouds delivered by a parent …

Individuals Who Experienced Early Reading Difficulty: How Teacher Connections And Educational Practices Shape Motivation, Nicole Tinney Jan 2024

Individuals Who Experienced Early Reading Difficulty: How Teacher Connections And Educational Practices Shape Motivation, Nicole Tinney

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Reading instruction is consistently controversial in education, whether it be the Reading Wars, a debate over the Science of Reading, or issues surrounding standardized reading testing. An often overlooked component in reading instruction is motivation. Why do some students struggle to learn to read while others sail seemingly effortlessly through reading benchmarks? How do some students overcome early reading difficulty while others struggle throughout their education? Students who have a difficult time reading in elementary school often lack motivation to read and continue to have low achievement on reading tests throughout schooling (Becker et al., 2010; Mcgeown et al., 2012). …

Getting /Srs About Tone Tags, Sierra Morrissey Jan 2024

Getting /Srs About Tone Tags, Sierra Morrissey

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In digital modes of communication, speakers may struggle to convey their tone and emotions to their readers and interlocutors. This complication leads to questions surrounding the state of the conventions for conveying tone in digital utterances (e.g., tweets). This thesis explores one such way that speakers overcome this struggle, tone tags. Tone tags are linguistic items consisting of a forward slash and an alphabetic character or characters that serve to represent some word or phrase, generally used to indicate the intended spirit of the utterance. This thesis serves as an analysis of these items, including necessary context, an explanation of …

Engaging Multilingual Learners In Mathematics Learning, Parastoo Zareie Jan 2024

Engaging Multilingual Learners In Mathematics Learning, Parastoo Zareie

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

As the number of Multilingual Learner (ML) students attending public schools rises, so does the demand for those who can teach them. Research shows that due to the existence of gaps between different types of knowledge, theory, and practice, the results of teacher preparation programs are often fragmented and do not fully benefit participating teachers (Ball, 2000). To address these gaps, a Professional Development (PD) framework, called PrimeD (Professional Development, Research, IMplementation, and Evaluation) has been proposed. It organizes PD for preservice teachers into four phases of Design, Implementation, Evaluation, and Research, and works in a cyclic nature to provide …
