Starting a new career can be daunting; however, alum David Louis proves that it is never too late to do so. Louis served 20 years as a combat medic in the United States Army, and after doing so, received a J.D. degree from the St. Mary’s University School of Law in 2020. With his knowledge in Law and his experience in the military, Louis has found his new career as a clerk for the Supreme Court of Texas. While pursuing a degree is beneficial for many reasons, Louis found it especially beneficial for himself and his family due to the …

Protection From Warlords & Celebrities: How Anti-Slapp Legislation Is Making International Headway To Protect Free Speech, Olivia Augustat
Protection From Warlords & Celebrities: How Anti-Slapp Legislation Is Making International Headway To Protect Free Speech, Olivia Augustat
The International Law Review Association Student Forum
Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) are increasingly being used by powerful individuals and entities to silence dissent and criticism, posing a significant threat to free speech globally. This misuse of legal systems undermines democratic principles by intimidating those who speak out on matters of public interest. My paper argues for the urgent need for effective Anti-SLAPP legislation, focusing on a comparative analysis of the U.S. and European Union (EU) approaches. While the U.S. has a fragmented but largely pro-defendant framework, the EU is moving toward an arguably vaguer but more unified, cross-border solution. This paper takes a unique approach …

The Status Of Status Research: A Review Of The Types, Functions, Levels And Audiences, Matteo Prato, Gokhan Ertug, Fabrizio Castellucci, Tengjian Zou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Our review of 154 articles published over the last decade portrays an evolution of status research. This body of literature has transitioned from viewing status as a monolithic construct to appreciating its inherently multidimensional nature, characterized by diverse types, functions, levels, and audience structures. Although this shift has expanded our knowledge, it has also introduced increased complexity and fragmentation. To systematize this scattered work on a multifaceted view of status, we develop a comprehensive framework that integrates the diverse research findings. For each constituent part of this framework, we review key themes and insights in the literature and outline future …

The protection of women and girls fleeing gender-based harms has been controversial in the United States (US), with advances followed by setbacks. The US interpretation of particular social group and its nexus analysis, both of which diverge from guidance by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is the most significant barrier to protection. It has become almost impossible for women and girls to rely upon the particular social group ground because of current requirements that social groups not only be defined by immutable or fundamental characteristics, but also be socially distinct and have particularity. Establishing nexus is also …

Assessment of Pollution Sources for the Lake Burullus Influent Drains at the North of Egypt. Egyptian northern region is facing significant pollution issues due to various factors such as fish farming expansion, industrial activities, and agricultural drainage water that enters the lake from the north through different drains. This pollution has detrimental effects on the lake's ecology and economy. The main goal of this study is to assess the current state of the influent drains into the Lake Burullus, that represent the second largest lake in the northern lakes of Egyptian. The water quality parameters in the influent drains to …

Cities around the nation are facing housing shortages as the costs of homes soar and the supply of affordable rentals continue to decline. Rental costs severely burden American households, as “almost half of renter households (21.6 million) spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent and 11.6 million households spend more than 50 percent of their income on rent.“ Additionally, 44 percent of rental households have reported “feeling pressure” to move from their homes for a range of reasons, including increased rent, inflation, power imbalances with their landlords, lack of repairs, and threats of eviction.

Answering The Call From Victims Of Dating Violence: Georgia’S New Dating Violence Law, Sydney K. Parish
Answering The Call From Victims Of Dating Violence: Georgia’S New Dating Violence Law, Sydney K. Parish
Georgia Criminal Law Review
Dating violence is a topic that has garnered increased awareness in recent days, both in the media and in the legal field. Many states have begun to pass legislation in attempt to address this issue and provide relief for victims of dating violence. In the summer of 2021, the state of Georgia passed House Bill 231, what later became known as Georgia’s Dating Violence law. This Article first examines our nation’s history of intimate partner violence to show why dating violence legislation was so desperately needed and how these legislative reforms have attempted to heal a system that for so …

The landlord brought a holdover proceeding to evict the tenant, claiming the lease had expired. The tenant argued that the building was rent-stabilized because there were once two illegal basement apartments. The court found in favor of the tenant, reasoning that violations issued by the Department of Buildings documenting the existence of two basement apartments constituted unrebutted evidence, and that the landlord failed to disprove their existence. Since the building had more than four apartments, rent stabilization applied to all units.

In this non-payment proceeding for a rent-stabilized unit, the court granted the tenant's motion to dismiss the petition pursuant to CPLR 4401 after the landlord rested its case at trial. The landlord alleged the unit was deregulated due to high rent vacancy, but failed to prove deregulation despite bearing the burden. The only evidence offered was speculative testimony about alleged renovations from a witness lacking personal knowledge, and DHCR rent registration records which expressly disclaimed attesting to the truthfulness of the registered rents. The court found this evidence insufficient as a matter of law to establish deregulation, an element of …

An Economic Advocacy Approach To Empower Rural Victims Of Gender-Based Violence: A Review Of The Literature, Loganne Ditter, Ziwei Qi
Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research
Gender-based violence (GBV) has devastating effects on survivors’ mental, emotional, psychological, physical, and financial well-being. In rural communities, cultural stigma, isolation, lack of services, economic deprivation, and poverty can create additional barriers for survivors to seek help and leave their abusive relationships. Economic advocacy is a survivor-centered approach that addresses poverty and economic insecurity in ending GBV and empowers individuals and communities with the necessary resources and skills. In this review article, the researchers aim to identify survivors’ unique challenges in rural communities, especially in economic hardship and financially dire situations. While the empirical research examined in this review has …
