Mindfulness, Moral Outrage, And The Climate Crisis: A Novel Approach Toward Motivating Pro-Environmental Behaviors, Erika Blair Jan 2024

Mindfulness, Moral Outrage, And The Climate Crisis: A Novel Approach Toward Motivating Pro-Environmental Behaviors, Erika Blair

Theses and Dissertations

The consequences of anthropogenic climate change are severe, continuously accelerating, and pose serious threats to the human and natural world. It is imperative to address the climate crisis from a psychosocial perspective and incite lasting, individual-level behavioral change. Various theoretical models have been adapted or developed to explain pro-environmental behaviors. However, the predictive powers of the most commonly used models have proven to be limited, and the underlying psychological processes of pro-environmental behavior constitute a significant gap in the literature. The present study identifies two psychological processes that show significant promise in motivating pro-environmental behaviors: moral outrage and mindfulness. Moral …

Mathematical Modeling Of Phage-Bacteria Population Dynamics, John Lawrence D. Palacios Jan 2024

Mathematical Modeling Of Phage-Bacteria Population Dynamics, John Lawrence D. Palacios

Theses and Dissertations

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and replicate within bacteria. Lytic phages cause the bacterial cell to burst, killing the bacteria. These types of phages can be used to treat patients with antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. As a step in developing successful treatment protocols, we aim to understand the population dynamics of phages and bacteria using an in vitro model. We model the dynamics using the Campbell model, which consists of a delay differential equation (DDE), as a base model. We extended the model by including the emergence of phage resistance. We then compared the DDE model with a parallel ordinary differential …

Regulatory Approval Of Clinical Trials: Is It Time To Reinvent The Wheel?, Mansoor Saleh, Karishma Sharma, Aisleen Shamshudin, Innocent Abayo, Stacey Gondi, Noureen Karimi

Haematology and Oncology, East Africa

Less than 1% of all clinical trials are conducted in Africa. In 2019, only six of 26 oncology clinical trials conducted in Africa were conducted in countries with subjects of African ancestry. There are multiple barriers that hinder the conduct of cancer clinical trials in Africa. Time to trial activation (TTA) is the administrative and regulatory process required before a study can be activated—an important metric and often a major barrier for site selection. In Kenya, TTA involves review by Institutional Review Board (IRB), Pharmacy and Poisons Board, National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation and Ministry of Health, all …

A Closer Look At Denali’S Alpine Wildlife: Assessing The Influences Of Climate And Vegetation Changes On Species In Alaska, Jennifer Lynn Wall

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Climate change is amplified in polar regions and could have considerable consequences for biodiversity. Arctic and boreal regions, in particular, have warmed more than double the global average and are experiencing increasing precipitation, thawing permafrost, shrinking snow seasons, and increasing shrub- and tree-line encroachment. These changes are suspected to influence key alpine biodiversity, including species such as collared pikas (Ochotona collaris), hoary marmots (Marmota caligata), and Arctic ground squirrels (Urocitellus parryii). But, we have limited understanding of whether this is true and, if so, which factors drive distributional shifts in response to climate change. For this dissertation, I collected data …

Investigating The Mechanisms For Priming And Maintaining Tumor Ag Specific Cd8+ T Cell Responses In The Context Of Cd4-Depletion, Delaney E. Ramirez

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Achieving durable, systemic CD8+ T cell responses against tumors is an imperative goal in treating cancer. However, suppressive cells, including Foxp3+CD4+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) are widely recognized to inhibit CD8+ T cell activity. For nearly two decades, anti-CD4 treatment has been used to eliminate Tregs and induces durable tumor antigen (Ag) specific CD8+ T cells, despite also depleting Foxp3-negative conventional CD4+ T (Tconv) cells. However, the underlying mechanism of anti-CD4 efficacy is not understood. In Chapter Three, we look beyond Treg depletion and investigate the potential contributions of other factors including homeostatic space, depletion of CD4+ APCs, and presence …
