Two types of immunity, humoral and cellular, offer protection against COVID. Humoral protection, contributed by circulating neutralizing antibodies, can provide immediate protection but decays more quickly than cellular immunity and can lose effectiveness in the face of mutation and drift in the SARS‑ CoV‑2 spike protein. Therefore, population‑level seroprevalence surveys used to estimate population‑ level immunity may underestimate the degree to which a population is protected against COVID. In early 2021, before India began its vaccination campaign, we tested for humoral and cellular immunity to SARS‑Cov‑2 in representative samples of slum and non‑slum populations in Bangalore, India. We found that …

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation I have studied a novel single-molecule nanosensor that integrates a Solid-State Nanopore (SSNP), milled in silicon nitride with a Double Nanohole (DNH) nanoaperture, milled in gold. This device leverages Self-Induced Back-Action (SIBA) for optical trapping with ssNP electrical sensing and is called the SIBA-Actuated Nanopore Electrophoresis (SANE) sensor. My lab has previously shown that simultaneous acquisition of bimodal optical and direct current (DC) electrical signatures enables more detailed characterization of nanoscopic analytes compared to using electrical data alone, which are typically collected by ssNP sensors. In this work I have first studied by COMSOL Multiphysics simulations the …

Multidimensional Data Visualization And Synchronization For Revealing Hidden Pandemic Information, Qi Zhang, Nikhil Maram
Faculty Publications - Information Technology
Visualization is integral to uncovering hidden information in data and providing users with intuitive feedback for decision-making. Data visualization is crucial for transforming complex data into actionable insights across various domains. In recent years, coronavirus disease vaccines have become increasingly available to much of the population. However, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) often fails to consider multidimensional coronavirus pandemic data from a side-by-side perspective, limiting the ability of medical professionals and individuals to compare and interact with comprehensive data visualizations. Effectively displaying coronavirus and vaccination data collected from multiple sources is essential for interpreting pandemic transmission patterns …
Survey Of Occupational Hygiene Professional Practice In Spanish-Speaking Countries, Thomas P. Fuller, Jennifer Peterson
Survey Of Occupational Hygiene Professional Practice In Spanish-Speaking Countries, Thomas P. Fuller, Jennifer Peterson
Faculty Publications – Health Sciences
Professional credentialing schemes based on experience and examination are used to clarify the scope and required competencies associated with the practice of a profession. National occupational hygiene (OH) credentials developed in 17 nations have been recognized by the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) to meet or exceed the requirements of a model certification program. To date, there is no credentialing or certification scheme for occupational hygienists in Spanish-speaking regions. To fill this void, a new credentialing body has been created named the Iberoamerican Board of Occupational Hygiene (JIHO). As a first step to the development of a certification exam for …

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
Streptococcus gallolyticus, part of the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) formerly known as Group D streptococi, is strongly associated with colorectal cancer and infective endocarditis. Its appearance in septic arthritis is rare, and its role in septic arthritis has not been as thoroughly investigated. We present the case of a 69 year old male with a history of atrial fibrillation and hypertension who was admitted to our hospital after undergoing a right knee replacement in 2023 with a chief complaint of right knee pain, fever, and chills. Arthrocentesis and blood cultures were performed, and the patient was started on …

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
According to the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA), Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the endocardial surface of the native valve, prosthetic heart valve, or an implanted cardiac device such as a permanent pacemaker or a defibrillator. IE is a rare fatal disease with an incidence rate of 3 to 10 cases per 100,000 people, predominantly in males over the age of 50 years in developed countries. Septic emboli are a serious sequelae of infective endocarditis with commonly affecting brain, spleen, kidneys, and lung. Usually, initial management includes tapered long term antibiotics with surgical evaluation for possible valve …

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of supplementation and dose of rumenprotected choline (RPC) on markers of inflammation and metabolism in liver and mammary tissue during an intramammary lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Parous Holstein cows were blocked by calving month and randomly assigned within block to receive 45 g/d of RPC (20.4 g/d of choline ions; CHOL45), 30 g/d of RPC (13.6 g/d of choline ions; CHOL30), or no RPC (CON) as a top-dress starting 24 d before expected calving until 21 d postpartum. Cows were alternately assigned within treatment group to either receive an intramammary LPS …

Analysis Of The Liner Shipping Network Structure Of The Asia–Europe Main Trunk Route Using Social Network Analysis, Sunghoon Park, Saeyeon Roh, Inhyeok Yeo
Plymouth Business School
Due to COVID-19, the shipping market has faced uncertainty, and the possibility of changes in port routes has increased. The purpose of this study was to analyze the network of container liner shipping routes between Asia and Europe. In particular, this research focused on a global risky situation—the COVID-19 pandemic. The data examined encompassed Asia–Europe route schedules from January 2018 to October 2021, which exhibited significant fluctuations due to the COVID-19 pandemic originating in 2019. To access this problem, utilizing concepts of centrality from social network analysis (SNA), namely degree centrality and betweenness centrality, this analysis incorporated route capacity as …

Loss Of The Scavenger Receptor Marco Results In Uncontrolled Vomocytosis Of Fungi From Macrophages, Chinaemerem U. Onyishi, Yusun Jeon, Gyorgy Fejer, Subhankar Mukhopadhyay, Siamon Gordon, Robin C. May
School of Biomedical Sciences
Vomocytosis, also known as nonlytic exocytosis, is a process whereby fully phagocytosed microbes are expelled from phagocytes without discernible damage to either the phagocyte or microbe. Although this phenomenon was first described in the opportunistic fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans in 2006, to date, mechanistic studies have been hampered by an inability to reliably stimulate or inhibit vomocytosis. Here we present the fortuitous discovery that macrophages lacking the scavenger receptor MAcrophage Receptor with COllagenous domain (MARCO), exhibit near-total vomocytosis of internalised cryptococci within a few hours of infection. Marco−/− macrophages also showed elevated vomocytosis of a yeast-locked C. albicans strain, …
