Investigating Pre-Health Students’ Science Identity And The Factors That Influence Them To Change Programs Or Tracks, Taylor Humphreys Nov 2024

Investigating Pre-Health Students’ Science Identity And The Factors That Influence Them To Change Programs Or Tracks, Taylor Humphreys

The Cardinal Edge

Retention rates for undergraduate students in pre-health programs or tracks have had a continual decline as students progress through their bachelor’s degrees. While numerous articles publish statistics regarding students on a pre-med track with intentions to apply to medical school, information is not available for pre-health students applying to other health professional schools. It is important to know what measures can be taken or resources offered to improve the retention rates across these programs or tracks.

Peer-led focus groups were used to elicit uncensored responses from students. Focus groups allowed for a small number of participants with similar interests or …

How Medical Students Address Mental Health during Standardized Patient Interactions

Bhoomi Shah B.S. Candidate; Emily J Noonan, PhD, MA; Laura A. Weingartner, PhD, MS

BACKGROUND:

As mental health needs are increasingly recognized around the world, it has become an increasingly important topic within medical education to ensure that medical professionals are well-prepared to address these concerns and provide adequate mental health care to patients. Our research examines the language that medical students used to assess and address mental health concerns during clinical skills training.

METHODS:

We observed standardized patient interactions with 85 medical students from the University of Louisville School …

Avaren-Fc, A Novel Immunotherapeutic, Recruits Nk Cells In B16f10 Melanoma Tumor Tissue, Sreevatsa Vemuri, Katarina L Mayer, Nobuyuki Matoba Nov 2024

Avaren-Fc, A Novel Immunotherapeutic, Recruits Nk Cells In B16f10 Melanoma Tumor Tissue, Sreevatsa Vemuri, Katarina L Mayer, Nobuyuki Matoba

The Cardinal Edge

Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in the US, with limited effective immunotherapeutic options available for patients. Avaren-Fc (AvFc) is a novel experimental immunotherapeutic agent with a unique “lectibody” property. It is capable of targeting cancer cells through the selective recognition of high mannose glycans, which are aberrantly overrepresented on the surface of malignant cells. Upon binding to cancer cells, AvFc can interact with circulating effector immune cells equipped with Fc receptors, such as natural killer (NK) cells to induce antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) and kill the cancer cells. Previous work has shown that AvFc effectively induces ADCC activity …

Cellular Senescence In Peripheral Tissues After Spinal Cord Injury, Tanisha A. Valdez, Benjamin R. Rood, Lukasz P. Slomnicki, Yonglin Gao, Mason Miller, Kariena Andres, Scott R. Whittemore, Michal Hetman Nov 2024

Cellular Senescence In Peripheral Tissues After Spinal Cord Injury, Tanisha A. Valdez, Benjamin R. Rood, Lukasz P. Slomnicki, Yonglin Gao, Mason Miller, Kariena Andres, Scott R. Whittemore, Michal Hetman

The Cardinal Edge

Cellular senescence is the phenomenon in which cells undergo permanent cell cycle arrest and is caused by natural aging or pathological mechanisms. Depending on the physiological context, pathological senescence can potentially be implicated in chronic inflammation but may also have a role in promoting tissue repair. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a whole-body injury, in which patients with SCI often experience complications in organ systems outside of the CNS. Our recent data has shown that senescence can develop in the spinal cord after SCI but the extent that senescence contributes to dysfunctions of peripheral tissues remains unclear. This study sought …

Utilization Of An Alternative Responder Model To Address Behavioral Health Care Related Calls To 911 In Louisville, Kentucky, Jacelyn Grimes, Paige Roberson, Mads Priddy, Brian Schaefer

The Cardinal Edge

In March 2022, Louisville Metro launched the Crisis Call Diversion Program (CCDP) which is redefining how the city responds to 911 behavioral health emergencies. The CCDP is an alternative responder model that works to deflect 911 calls from law enforcement and provide the individual in crisis with “someone to talk to,” “someone to respond,” and “a place to go.” The UofL School of Public Health and Information Sciences was contracted to evaluate the intervention and in this poster, we will describe how the CCDP works, the evaluation design, and outcomes in the first year of operations.

The Relationship Between Protein Synthesis And Aging, Christopher A. Jackel Nov 2024

The Relationship Between Protein Synthesis And Aging, Christopher A. Jackel

The Cardinal Edge

Aging is a complex process influenced by various cellular mechanisms, with several distinctive features associated with its progression. Among the hallmarks of aging is the loss of proteostasis, or disruption in the balance of proteins within the cell. Recent research has made significant strides in unraveling the intricate relationship between proteostasis and aging. Notably, studies have demonstrated that decreased protein synthesis can extend the healthspan of organisms. Moreover, inhibition of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) complex 1 has been shown to selectively reduce the lifespan limiting proteins while promoting autophagy, thereby extending organismal lifespan. Thus, this paper aims to review …

The Impact Of Chronic Stress On The Aging Process, Toriana Alfieri Nov 2024

The Impact Of Chronic Stress On The Aging Process, Toriana Alfieri

The Cardinal Edge

Chronic stress can be characterized as a prolonged stressor that negatively impacts one’s life and has been associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease and immune system suppression. Given that chronic stress undeniably impacts health as a whole, it is reasonable to assume that it may also affect the aging process. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the impact of chronic stress on the aging process with a specific focus on the 12 hallmarks of aging: genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, disabled macroautophagy, deregulated nutrient-sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, …

Anti-Aging Properties Of Cosmetics, Anna Lipinski Nov 2024

Anti-Aging Properties Of Cosmetics, Anna Lipinski

The Cardinal Edge

It is well established that external factors, specifically UV exposure, are among the highest contributors to the biological aging of the skin. Prolonged exposure may disrupt skin cell homeostasis through shifts in proteostasis, accumulation of reactive oxidative species, premature cellular senescence, and inflammatory pathways. Cosmetic companies have responded to this by producing products marketed as "youthful" and "anti-aging" by including specific compounds into formulas to combat skin aging. This review discusses the specific mechanisms of anti-aging formulas, including polyphenols as senotherapeutic agents and L-ascorbic acid as an anti-inflammatory compound, in resisting the biological aging of the skin.

An Analysis Of The Environmental Account Of Obesity As A Form Of Financial Neo-Imperialism, Zahara Alzubaidi Nov 2024

An Analysis Of The Environmental Account Of Obesity As A Form Of Financial Neo-Imperialism, Zahara Alzubaidi

The Cardinal Edge

Socioeconomic developments of the past half-century have created mass social concern over an “obesity epidemic.” This concern is given a sense of legitimacy by studies that warn of a totally obese America in only a few decades, and children being more likely than ever to be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The “environmentalist account” of obesity asserts that factors like genetics, food availability, and social or political climate are the major determinants of an “obesogenic environment” – that is, an environment of obese adults likely to raise obese children. Some feminist thinkers argue that the environmentalist account is necessary to …

Sdf-1Α Mediates Primary Tumor Escape In Glioblastoma Through Activation Of Mesenchymal Transitions, Charles T. Froman-Glover

The Cardinal Edge

Glioblastoma (GBM), a highly aggressive primary brain tumor originating in glial cells, poses a significant challenge due to its rapid growth and invasive nature within healthy brain tissue.

Current treatments involve surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation. These treatments alone are not enough to cure this disease, and a better understanding of the mechanics of the tumor's micro-environment is imperative to furthering the field of cancer research. This research focuses on understanding the tumor microenvironment's impact, specifically investigating the role of stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1) mechanics on GBM aggressiveness. SDF-1 is known to facilitate disease progression by facilitating chemotaxis toward …

Resilience And Evolution: The Transformative Impact Of The Black Death On Women’S Roles In Medieval England, Kaylee N. Vitato

The Cardinal Edge

"Resilience and Evolution: The Transformative Impact of the Black Death on Women’s Roles in Medieval England" delves into the nuanced effects of the Black Death on gender dynamics in medieval England. While there were positive shifts in attitudes toward women's roles, persistent challenges, such as unequal employment conditions, lower wages compared to men, and negative household stereotypes, endured. The research examines alterations in labor markets, inheritance norms, property laws, and domestic dynamics to uncover the multifaceted impact of the Black Death on the evolution of women's roles. Despite emerging opportunities for women in previously male-dominated spheres, the analysis also reveals …

Disease And Discrimination: The Persecution Of Jews In The Holy Roman Empire During The Black Death, Abigail M Stanger Nov 2024

Disease And Discrimination: The Persecution Of Jews In The Holy Roman Empire During The Black Death, Abigail M Stanger

The Cardinal Edge

The Black Death, the second major plague pandemic caused by the spread of the bacteria Yersinia pestis, emerged in the Holy Roman Empire in 1348. Throughout its spread until 1352, the plague devastated residents of the Holy Roman Empire regardless of demographic features. However, Christians at the time believed that members of Jewish communities died at significantly lower rates than themselves, and already existing sentiments of antisemitism grew into the assignment of blame onto Jews. This concurrent spread of plague and antisemitism resulted in pogroms and other forms of mass violence against Jewish communities across Europe, but specifically in the …

The Louisville Housing Crisis, Rebecca Klukowski Nov 2024

The Louisville Housing Crisis, Rebecca Klukowski

The Cardinal Edge

There is no question of whether the United States is facing a housing crisis. With approximately 653,104 Americans experiencing homelessness on a given night in 2023 and 22.4 million renter households cost-burdened in 2022, the facts speak for themselves (de Sousa et al., 2023; Joint Center for Housing Studies, 2024). However, understanding the complex contributing factors to a housing crisis can be difficult. What does it mean for housing to be affordable? How is our state of Kentucky affected by housing insecurity, and what can the general public do to help?

How Speech-Language Pathologists Can Collaborate With A Well-Meaning Judiciary To Improve Jury Instructions, Lillian N. Stiegler, Rebecca L. Parker Nov 2024

How Speech-Language Pathologists Can Collaborate With A Well-Meaning Judiciary To Improve Jury Instructions, Lillian N. Stiegler, Rebecca L. Parker

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

Abstract

Purpose: Many U.S. adults are called upon to fulfill civic responsibilities through jury duty. Jury participation is a responsibility, but it is also a privilege that ensures the balance of power between government and citizens. Problems arise when jury instructions are presented using complex language that challenges the comprehension of laypersons with and without language and literacy differences, negatively influencing the juror’s participation experience and trial outcomes. In spite of plain language mandates and clear findings regarding the average literacy abilities of U.S. adults, much of the legal community persists in the use of difficult jury instructions.

Method: Academic …

The Abusive Relationship Between The Humanities And Universities: How Feminist Pedagogy Can Heal Humanist Work In The Public Forum, Danielle Morse Nov 2024

The Abusive Relationship Between The Humanities And Universities: How Feminist Pedagogy Can Heal Humanist Work In The Public Forum, Danielle Morse

Feminist Pedagogy

This critical commentary considers in what ways as well as where humanists and feminist pedagogues can professionally exist when facing ideological and existential threats to higher education institutions. The passage of Florida’s SB 266 (and similar legislation) has ushered in ideological threats to academic freedom and afforded policy makers increasing levels of control in the academy. This commentary positions legislative assaults at higher education institutions – predominantly launched at non-STEM disciplines – as extensions of the 100-year-long humanities “crisis" and recommends that humanists and feminist pedagogues use this moment of continued crisis to re-define and re-locate the humanities. Looking at …

“My Pregnant Man Story”: “Bloodchild” As A Means Of Discussing Reproductive Rights, Ashley Lear

Feminist Pedagogy

Restrictions on reproductive health education in Florida have resulted in misinformation and taboos that could be addressed through parallels in science fiction. As Paweł Frelik, University of Warsaw Professor of American Studies, reminds us, science fiction is a “cultural discourse,” in which “fantastic figures such as aliens, clones, and cyborgs are allegories of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, able-bodiedness, and other dimensions of individual subjectivity.” Octavia Butler’s short story “Bloodchild” (1995) will be used in this activity to discuss reproductive rights with students in the wake of so many legal challenges to those same rights. Butler, inspired by her own fears …
