Do Rural Places Matter?, Stephen Clowney Dec 2024

Do Rural Places Matter?, Stephen Clowney

Connecticut Law Review

Rural communities are at a crossroads. On one hand, small towns continue to receive robust support from the federal government. Congress sends billions of dollars in agricultural support, homeownership subsidies, and infrastructure spending to rural places every year. Yet, despite ongoing federal investment, conditions in rural America have deteriorated. Economic growth, educational opportunities, and health outcomes in rural places all lag behind the rest of the country.

This Article asks what has gone wrong. Why do rural communities continue to lose ground despite such significant outlays from Congress? This Article contributes to the ongoing debate about the future of the …

Treating The Administrative As Law: Responding To The “Judicial Aggrandizement” Critique, Chad Squitieri Dec 2024

Treating The Administrative As Law: Responding To The “Judicial Aggrandizement” Critique, Chad Squitieri

Scholarly Articles

Modern separation-of-powers jurisprudence—including key decisions decided during the Supreme Court’s 2023-24 term—has been critiqued on the grounds that it constitutes “judicial aggrandizement,” i.e., that it impermissibly empowers federal courts to decide separation-of-powers questions better left to Congress and the President. This “judicial aggrandizement” critique goes too far to the extent it suggests that federal courts may not play any role in enforcing the separation of powers. After all, ours is a system of a President and Congress constrained by a written Constitution—not a King in Parliament free to act outside of judicial constraint. But the “judicial aggrandizement” critique is persuasive …

Revealing The Dual Dynamics: Transient And Persistent Efficiencies Of The Indonesian Provincial Economies, Mohammad Zeqi Yasin, Fichrie Fachrowi Adli Dec 2024

Revealing The Dual Dynamics: Transient And Persistent Efficiencies Of The Indonesian Provincial Economies, Mohammad Zeqi Yasin, Fichrie Fachrowi Adli

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

We examine the decomposition of technical efficiency components into transient and persistent horizons applied to the 33 provincial economies in Indonesia. Focusing on the post-decentralization era in 2002–2022, we employ Stochastic Frontier Analysis to gauge efficiency dynamics for time-variant and time-invariant evolution. We reveal that the persistent inefficiencies outweigh transient ones, implying the persistent inefficient behavior of Indonesian provinces. We also capture that East Nusa Tenggara and several provinces in Eastern Indonesia show the most lagged-behind in terms of persistent inefficiency severity, suggesting necessity of structural changes through more strategic and specific development models beyond mere heterogeneous input reallocation.

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Matt Blaszczyk Dec 2024

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Matt Blaszczyk

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

Recently, the United Kingdom Supreme Court decided that only natural persons can be considered inventors. A year before, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a similar decision. In fact, so have many of the courts all over the world. This Article analyzes these decisions, argues that the courts got it right, and finds that artificial inventorship is at odds with patent law doctrine, theory, and philosophy. This Article challenges the intellectual property (IP) post-humanists, exposing the analytical and normative perils of their argumentation, and recommends against getting rid of the nominally central place of humans …

Re(De)Fining Patent Eligibility, Lauren Hong Dec 2024

Re(De)Fining Patent Eligibility, Lauren Hong

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

The patent system is at the heart of America’s innovation scene, serving as the lifeline for America’s status as an industrial titan as it seeks to inspire inventors worldwide to innovate and discover. The confines of patent-eligible subject matter were set out by Congress through the power vested by the Constitution, and these boundaries have been re(de)fined as the Supreme Court has carved out exceptions to these standards including: laws of nature, abstract ideas, and natural phenomena being excluded from patentability. In response to criticisms of legal uncertainty surrounding patent-eligibility under the current regime, two senators have introduced The Patent …

Irradiation Enhanced Immune Response In Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Ansah Mirza

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a significant challenge due to its limited treatment options and poor prognosis. This study aimed to understand the irradiation induced cellular changes in ESCC cells to search for a better combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy for ESCC patients through studying the effects of programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) and calreticulin (CRT), major cell immunogenicity markers. This research investigated the change in PD-L1 expression, CRT translocation, and how it impacted a cancer cell’s immune response. The human ESCC cell line, KYSE-150, was cultured and underwent irradiation. Images of the cells were taken using the Nikon A1R …

Examining The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease Among African American College Students At The University Of Texas At Arlington, Esha Kashyap

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Many studies examine the risk of cardiovascular disease in the general population of African Americans adults compared with other racial and ethnic groups; however, there is limited research that explores the risk factors, discrimination, and food behavior that impact this group. Cardiovascular disease develops over time and certain practices or experiences can increase the risk of this disease; thus, studying the behavior and perceptions of college students is important. Therefore, this research examined whether food behavior and perceived discrimination was higher in African American college students than in other racial or ethnic student groups. Utilizing a survey containing both qualitative …

Effect Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (Hbot) On The Proportion Of Splenic Leukocytes During Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Hetvi Patel Dec 2024

Effect Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (Hbot) On The Proportion Of Splenic Leukocytes During Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Hetvi Patel

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can accelerate the regeneration of skeletal muscle after injury and improve overall recovery. Certain cells of the spleen are increased during muscle regeneration; however, the effect of HBOT on splenic cells during muscle regeneration is not well understood. In other experimental models, HBOT proliferates the proportion of splenic cells. In this study, eight male and nine female mice sustaining crush muscle injuries underwent HBOT at 1.5 atmospheres absolute for 60 min or normobaric hyperoxia (100% O2) for 60 min within 2-6 hours of injury for 4 days. The mice were then euthanized at 4- …

There are many ways to propel a wheelchair, including four main propulsion patterns. However, there are no definitive criteria for a “correct” form. This study investigated differences in wheelchair propulsion between experienced and inexperienced wheelchair users to determine any differences in propulsion patterns, joint kinematics, or speed between the two groups, indicating what contributes to a more mature form. Subjects were recorded pushing a wheelchair for twenty feet, then each video was analyzed using Kinovea, a software for tracking body movements. There will be differences in the propulsion patterns between the two groups, and inexperienced users will push more frequently …

Determining Evolutionary Conservation Of Mhc-E And Vista Interaction, Julia Glenn Dec 2024

Determining Evolutionary Conservation Of Mhc-E And Vista Interaction, Julia Glenn

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Research in the Weidanz laboratory is focused on cellular molecules which inhibit immune activation, known as immune checkpoints. One example is HLA-E, which can modulate immune responses at homeostasis or in the context of cancer. HLA-E typically acts by presenting short canonical peptides (VL9s) and binding to CD94/NKG2A receptors on NK cells and T cells. The Weidanz laboratory’s research has found that in the absence of these VL9 peptides, HLA-E binds to another immune checkpoint, VISTA, instead of CD94/NKG2A. Therefore, the HLA-E/VISTA interaction is peptide-dependent. The current study aims to determine if this peptide-dependent interaction is evolutionarily conserved using the …

Investigating The Role Of Hopelessness In The Stress-Performance Relationship Among College Students, Vidushi Sabnani Dec 2024

Investigating The Role Of Hopelessness In The Stress-Performance Relationship Among College Students, Vidushi Sabnani

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

As college students pursue higher education as a pathway to success, they face pressures that threaten their well-being and academic success. Balancing academic, financial, and social demands has led to a mental health crisis on campuses, with emotional stress cited as the leading cause of students discontinuing their education (Gallup, 2023). This study investigates the relationship between academic stress, perceived stress, and academic performance in college students. It also examines the Yerkes-Dodson law of a curvilinear relationship between stress and performance and the role of hopelessness as a mediator. A sample of 321 participants completed surveys assessing academic stress, perceived …

Conceptual Understanding, Engagement, And Optimal Learning Moments With Problem-Oriented Project Learning In High School Physics, Catherine A. Howell

Dissertations

This research explored the effect of Problem-Oriented Problem Based Learning (POPL) on concept attainment and engagement in a high school physics class. While physics education remains a vital component of STEM education, secondary physics enrollment trails chemistry and biology. Issues contributing to physics’ reputation as a complex subject include prior misconceptions and the formulaic nature of pedagogy. Prior research indicated that active learning can challenge misconceptions and mitigate the sameness of instruction. POPL resides firmly in the active learning methodology of Project-Based Learning (PjBL). This study expanded the research by combining Physics, POPL, concept attainment, multiple components of engagement, and …
