Introduction Breaking the chain of transmission of an infectious disease pathogen is a major public health priority. The challenges of understanding, describing and predicting the transmission dynamics of infections have led to a wide range of mathematical, statistical and biological research problems. Advances in diagnostic laboratory procedures with the ability to test multiple pathogens simultaneously mean that co-infections are increasingly being detected, yet little is known about the impact of co-infections in shaping the course of an infection, infectivity, and pathogen replication rate. This is particularly true of the apparent synergistic effects of viral and bacterial co-infections, which present the …

A Catholic Positive Youth Development Model Based On The Context Of The Catholic Church In Thailand, Sarawin Patsriruang
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
In 2007, the Catholic Youth Council of Thailand was restructured into the Catholic Commission for Laity on Youth Desk to collaborate with all Catholic youth organizations in Thailand and expand the work of Catholic youth development. Despite the announcement of its 10 major youth development plans since 2015, there is still an opportunity to incorporate the widely adopted Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach into its projects and programs. Similarly, research on Catholic youth development reveals a gap in the concrete application of PYD. To address these practical and research gaps, this study aims to develop a PYD model suitable for …

Sustainable Cities In Developing Countries: A Case Of Balancing Cultural Heritage Preservation And Tourism In Manila, Philippines, Geoffrey Rhoel C. Cruz, Ma. Divina Gracia Z. Roldan
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This study argues that heritage can work side-by-side with development, with culture and heritage serving as an integral part of the city’s economic backbone. A major challenge faced by developing countries is making their cities sustainable by preserving cultural heritage amidst demands for economic growth. This is experienced in the Philippines, with its capital city, Manila, as a case in point. Using a heritage-driven development framework developed by Zerrudo (2020), the paper examines how cultural heritage conservation and tourism development objectives affect the sustainability of cities in developing countries. The paper emphasizes culture as an important pillar of sustainable development. …
Short-Term Parental Migration And Intergenerational Educational Persistence, Swati Sharma
Short-Term Parental Migration And Intergenerational Educational Persistence, Swati Sharma
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This study examines the mechanisms through which short-term parental migration affects intergenerational educational persistence, using a sample of 40,922 Indian father-child pairs from the Indian Human Development Surveys. A flexible modeling approach was used that allows for heterogeneous effects of social origins and structural features of the Indian education system on different educational transitions of the child. Results show that parental migration increases intergenerational educational persistence. In particular, persistence increases for higher educational transitions when parental migration is motivated by economic distress or when the left-behind children are engaged in household responsibilities. Lack of parental supervision increases persistence across all …

Should The Philippines Shift To The Opt-Out System?, Napoleon Mabaquiao Jr., Ronel De Loyola
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
With the increasing demand for organs and the shortage of organ donations, more lives are being lost every day. Governments and national health authorities are, consequently, exploring more effective ways to increase organ donation rates, both from the living and the dead. Regarding cadaveric organ donations, the increase in organ donation rates in countries that have shifted from the opt-in (or explicit consent) system to the opt-out (or presumed consent) system has been very encouraging. As a result, some other countries still operating under the opt-in system are contemplating making the same move. In the Philippines, there are bills filed …

School of Nursing and Midwifery
BackgroundPhysical activity referral schemes have been used extensively as one pathway to support behaviour change in people with long term conditions. Best practice guidance, across countries, recommend that schemes use behaviour change practices. The effectiveness of these schemes is inconsistent, yet, little is known about the implementation of specific approaches, or what influences practitioner’s delivery. This article provides a narrative review of evidence exploring the implementation of behaviour change practices in physical activity referral schemes.MethodsAn electronic search of three databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar) was undertaken. A menu of iterative techniques was also applied from the CLUSTER approach to increase …

The Reel Narrative: The Portrayal And Consequent Archetypes Of Women In Selected Mainstream Philippine Romantic Cinema, Ma. Beatrice P. Pilar, Nathaniel Rey D. Ferrer
Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
In Philippine society, media, particularly romance films, shapes and reinforces audiences’ perspectives, perpetuating preconceived notions and stereotypical beliefs. However, there is a lack of textual analysis within Filipino films, especially regarding female representation in media. Hence, our study explores the portrayal of female main characters in romance films. Textual film analysis, grounded in Carl Jung’s Jungian archetypes and Jean Shinoda Bolen’s female archetypes in media, was implemented on the six Filipino highest-grossing romance films from 2014 until 2019. This analysis, further supported by a feminist lens, aimed to identify the character portrayal and archetypes of the main female characters in …

What Is Deeply Rooted In The Constitution?, Thomas P. Crocker
BYU Law Review
In a series of cases stretching over a century, the Court made a right’s roots a constitutive feature of its identity. Highlighting the analytic centrality of deep roots to the recognition of rights, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health withdrew prior judicial recognition of a woman’s right to reproductive choice, arguing that such a right was not properly rooted in the American legal tradition. But what does it mean for a right to have deep roots? A surprising feature of American constitutionalism is that there is no single answer to the basic analytic question of what it means for a right …

Is An Autonomous Vehicle A Roller Coaster Or A Hollywood Film? Trust, Safety, And Industry Self-Regulation, Tracy Hresko Pearl
BYU Law Review
Regulation of autonomous vehicles continues to be a daunting task in the United States, and the federal government has not yet succeeded in creating a regulatory scheme that intelligently addresses the risks and benefits of these vehicles. There are multiple reasons for this regulatory lag. Autonomous vehicles are developing at such a rapid pace that lawmakers, who often struggle with technological literacy, struggle to keep up. Additionally, government agencies lack the level of expertise, experience, and data that the industry possesses.
Industry self-regulation offers a meaningful alternative for increasing the safety of autonomous vehicles and building consumer trust. The success …

Into The Sunset: Divorcing Families Need Their Slice Of The Tcja Reversions, John C. Mcdonald
BYU Law Review
On its path to sufficiently offsetting its major cut to the corporate income tax rate in 2017, Congress turned to a surprising source for funds: the alimony support payments of recently divorced families. Alimony’s inclusion/deduction regime in §§ 71 and 215 of the Code allowed divorcing couples to reach mutually beneficial divorce agreements for over half a century until it was unceremoniously repealed by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 with a striking lack of satisfying legislative justifications. This Note suggests that in evaluating the impact of the repeal, Congress and others have failed to consider an important …
