Student And Teacher Outcomes: Implementing Pax Gbg In Elementary Schools, Nimisha Patel, Michelle A. Fleming, Amy Elston

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper examines the implementation of the PAX Good Behavior Game (PAX GBG) in a Midwestern metropolitan area during the 2018-2019 academic year. The study focuses on baseline, midpoint, and endpoint frequencies of students’ off-task behaviors (Spleems), as well as teachers’ and administrators' self-reports of self-efficacy and resiliency. Students in PreK through Grade 5 were in classes in which teachers implemented PAX GBG. Students were enrolled in one of 195 classrooms across 13 public schools. Means were calculated for Spleems, as well as for the self-efficacy and resiliency scales. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test was used to determine the …

Making The World A Better Place: Meaningful, Reciprocal Service Learning In Costa Rica, Nora Geer Dec 2024

Making The World A Better Place: Meaningful, Reciprocal Service Learning In Costa Rica, Nora Geer

Capstone Collection

Despite the countless benefits that international service learning can present to host communities and student service learners, current service learnings offerings for undergraduate students remain relatively limited in quantity and intentionality. Unless international service learning programs lead with reciprocity, meaning, and sustainability, their pitfalls may exceed their advantages, resulting in an industry that leaves both communities and student participants necessitating more. The following proposed program in Costa Rica plans to lead by example, remedying service learning’s greatest shortcomings by making community relationship building its utmost priority, emphasizing cross-cultural exchange between students and community members, and offering service projects that fill …

Exploring Self-Efficacy: Key Influences Shaping First Year Students’ Self Belief During Their First Semester Abroad, Isabella Lena Agostino Dec 2024

Exploring Self-Efficacy: Key Influences Shaping First Year Students’ Self Belief During Their First Semester Abroad, Isabella Lena Agostino

Capstone Collection

Guided by Albert Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, this research explores the four primary sources of self-efficacy—mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and physiological and emotional states—and their impact on first-year students’ belief in their ability to navigate the challenges of studying and living in an international context. By examining the sources of self-efficacy, the study provides an understanding of the factors that support or hinder students’ self-efficacy during their transition and experience in a new environment.

Using a mixed methods approach, self-efficacy levels were assessed through the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (NGSE), followed by semi-structured interviews that provided qualitative insights into …

The Crisis Of A New Gender Gap: Male Underrepresentation In Liberal Arts Higher Education, Zachary T. Gerdes Dec 2024

The Crisis Of A New Gender Gap: Male Underrepresentation In Liberal Arts Higher Education, Zachary T. Gerdes

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

Women outnumber men in college attendance for the first time in United States history. Research to date has shown that while male privilege persists in the U.S. regarding some aspects of society (e.g., disproportionate numbers of men in leadership positions), men as a whole are decreasingly represented in institutions of higher learning. Liberal arts and Jesuit colleges maintain an even wider gender gap. Particularly, men of color and men from low socioeconomic backgrounds are at an increasing disadvantage in regards to admissions and scholarship review practices. The educational, biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to lack of male achievement are …

By increasing research in …

What's Race Really Got To Do With It? Investigating (In)Equity In Education Through A Critical Social Lens, Ester Sihite Dec 2024

What's Race Really Got To Do With It? Investigating (In)Equity In Education Through A Critical Social Lens, Ester Sihite

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

In a nation that is increasingly becoming more racially and ethnically diverse, educational literature and practice still lacks critical investigation of how systems have fared in supporting the success of historically marginalized students of color. Through an examination of contemporary literature using a critical framework, this paper presents overviews of key factors contributing to educational inequities in the education pipeline: historical legislation, funding structures, and psychosocial attitudes and paradigms of educators. Discussion of these elements bears implications for policymakers and educators and renders possibilities for critical analysis-driven change that can foster greater opportunities for educational success for students of color.

Prevent Defense: Trade Secret Protection In Professional Sports, Kevin Paule Dec 2024

Prevent Defense: Trade Secret Protection In Professional Sports, Kevin Paule

Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review

Data has never been more important in professional sports. On the field, players obsess over advanced statistics and the use of analytics. Off the field, front offices use newfound statistics and modeling to gain a competitive edge in setting starting lineups, drafting players, and structuring contract extensions. Stadium scoreboards and baseball cards now prominently display statistics that were an afterthought a generation ago. Thus, with this growth in analytics comes a need for teams and leagues to protect their information. Trade secret disputes are nothing new—companies have always taken efforts to protect their secrets and limit unfair competition. But, with …

(Anti)Competitive Football Leagues, Garry A. Gabison Dec 2024

(Anti)Competitive Football Leagues, Garry A. Gabison

Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review

This Article discusses recent decisions from the European Court of Justice dealing with football (soccer) leagues and their governing bodies. Governing bodies adopt a number of rules allegedly necessary for the good functioning of their leagues. However, many of these rules violate the competition laws. One way to circumvent competition scrutiny is through multi-club ownership. This business model may become more attractive given these recent decisions. This business model may, however, deplete the trust we have in sport competitions. More effective merger regulation may well be the last savior of sporting competition.

The Living Document, Camilla Lyckblad Dec 2024

The Living Document, Camilla Lyckblad

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This physical interactive art piece of thesis research in progress aims to deepen comprehension of information behavior in clinical contexts, where the contemporary medical record, with its increasing digital properties such as open record access for patients, can be viewed as an entity that both listens and influences. The art piece sheds light on the complex dynamics of truth within clinical environments, where patients and healthcare professionals might selectively disclose or withhold information, aiming to protect both patient, clinician and the information itself. Set within a small, dimly lit room, the exhibit features eight aged medical records, each inscribed with …

Conceptual Curiosity: Sense(Un)Making, Rebekah L. Cowell Dec 2024

Conceptual Curiosity: Sense(Un)Making, Rebekah L. Cowell

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Across disciplines, sensemaking is a theoretical and methodological research program, over forty years in development, that has been treated as a framework for understanding how humans behaviorally respond to external information sources and interpret to construct and actualize actionable outcomes; however, sensemaking is an interlinking process that does not operate in singularity–behaviorally or actionably–it is neurobiological (autonomous drive), cognitive (perceptual and predictive), and psychological (congruency in meaning).

This paper enlarges the conceptual framework for studying sensemaking and redefines it by addressing what sensemaking is, does, and needs. At the core of this conversation is addressing the absence of knowledge and …

Space And Context: Exploration Of Information Experience And Document Experience, Carrie A. Boettcher Dec 2024

Space And Context: Exploration Of Information Experience And Document Experience, Carrie A. Boettcher

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper explores documents that are recorded and cataloged, but the original is a one-of-a-kind phenomenon that only exists once. It ponders where information ends, and document begins and the concepts of space and context that contribute to the shape or structure of the document. Specifically, the confidential counseling session, only experienced by the individuals present during the session, repeated but not duplicated, and how information and documents contribute to understanding of the counseling session.

The Living Document: Medical Records As A Malleable Presence, Camilla Lyckblad

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Understanding why individuals might safeguard information or keep secrets in working documents such as medical records is essential for the development of good quality care, fostering an environment where both patients and staff feel secure to part with sensitive information, encouraging more honest and open communication as well as improved quality of care. This ongoing research aims to deepen comprehension of information behavior in clinical contexts, where the contemporary medical record, with its increasing properties such as open record access for patients, can be viewed as an entity that both listens and influences. This examination sheds light on the complex …

Time And The Catalogue, Alec Mullender Dec 2024

Time And The Catalogue, Alec Mullender

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper explores the multiple ways in which concepts of time are incorporated in cataloguing and classification to see how these temporal concepts influence how material is organised in library space. It discusses multiple concepts, including the structural influences of the capitalist ‘exchange-view’ of time in how the discipline is organised and its incorporation into the so-called ‘universal’ cataloguing systems. The continued issues of obsolescence within cataloguing systems as language and concepts constantly evolve, and how these are integrated into the systems themselves. The paper also discusses the semantic difficulties with how time itself is expressed within cataloguing systems, as …

Thinking With Our Grandmothers: Past, Epidata, And Future In Designing A Proximity Affordance, Laurie J. Bonnici, Brian C. O'Connor, Gary Samson Dec 2024

Thinking With Our Grandmothers: Past, Epidata, And Future In Designing A Proximity Affordance, Laurie J. Bonnici, Brian C. O'Connor, Gary Samson

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper examines the limitations of historical documentation, focusing on the lives of mill girls in Manchester, New Hampshire’s textile mills through photographic images and family memories. While photographs, like those by Lewis Hine, provide insight into the physical conditions and harsh realities faced by young workers, they do not capture the inner lives of child laborers or the broader social context shaping their experiences. The authors highlight the shortcomings of traditional archival practices, particularly the subject headings applied to Hine’s photographs, which fail to reflect the complexities of mill girls' lives. Drawing on personal perspectives from the authors—whose grandmothers …

The Norwegian Public Library Of The Future – What Are The Challenges To Meet?, Roswitha Skare

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This article examines the future challenges facing Norwegian public libraries in light of legislative changes and evolving societal needs. Since the Public Library Act of 1986, with updates in 2014, libraries are mandated to be accessible cultural and educational centers. The 2019 national library strategy further emphasizes their role in public enlightenment and community engagement, particularly in the digital age. Despite high usage rates, challenges remain in attracting non-users and enhancing digital services. The article highlights the need for libraries to adapt to an aging population and to expand their role in public health, digital literacy, and community resilience. It …

Solidaristic Grief: A Framework For Political Organizing, Gabe K Dec 2024

Solidaristic Grief: A Framework For Political Organizing, Gabe K

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

My purpose in this article is to outline the potential of grief to be foundational to a collectivist politics of solidarity and interdependence. Drawing on research in human psychology, I will argue that because people form core beliefs based more on emotion than rationality, movements for justice and equality must utilize emotion to convince people to dedicate time and energy to helping their cause. Defined in this article as a process of reconstructing one’s “world of meaning” and very identity in the face of loss, grief is by nature transformative. Grief also challenges atomistic conceptions of individuality to reframe how …

Situating Black Death And Grief Within The Context Of Ancestral Veneration, Chris Z. Sanders Dec 2024

Situating Black Death And Grief Within The Context Of Ancestral Veneration, Chris Z. Sanders

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Death and grief are an ever-present phenomenon in the Black community. Starting with the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade and chattel slavery; then transcending into mortality rates; police brutality; gun violence; and just living while Black. Statistically, Black Americans die at higher rates than white Americans at nearly every age. As a result, the Black community has always had a very intimate and ambiguous relationship with death and grief. In response to this relationship, the Black community has created our own way of mourning through the formation of unique funeral and vigil traditions, the establishment of Black-owned funeral homes, the preservation of …

Blood On Their Hands: Settler Colonial States In The Arctic, Mer M. Dec 2024

Blood On Their Hands: Settler Colonial States In The Arctic, Mer M.

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The Arctic is currently the most rapidly warming region in the world. Modern-day media has been transfixed by the image of the poor polar bear, eeking out a difficult living as the sea ice they depend on has been melting. What often remains outside of the frame, however, are the more complex questions about how we got to this point of extreme climate change. Linking the genocidal histories of Indigenous assimilation in the Arctic to the modern-day ecological crises plaguing the region introduces the state as an overlooked climate polluter. While Arctic communities are all on the frontlines of climate …

Sankofa In Action: Reclaiming Our Future, Adisa Preston Dec 2024

Sankofa In Action: Reclaiming Our Future, Adisa Preston

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Pan-Africanism has been one of the responses to the systematic and brutal efforts by colonial powers to negate the worth and humanity of African peoples. Emerging in the Caribbean and the United States in the 19th-century, it flowered with the independence movements of the 20th. Historian Kwame Anthony Appiah defines Pan-Africanism as “a political project calling for the unification of all Africans into a single African state to which those in the African diaspora can return” (Appiah 1992, 174).

Pan-Africanism sought to heal the catastrophic ruptures of slavery, throw off the shackles of colonialism, and to fight the racist ideologies …

The Burden Of Birth: Racialized Margins Of Care In Washington, D.C., Beya D. Hull Dec 2024

The Burden Of Birth: Racialized Margins Of Care In Washington, D.C., Beya D. Hull

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The United States has shockingly high rates of maternal mortality in which Black women bear a disproportionate burden of pregnancy related deaths. In D.C., the nation's capital, Black women account for 90% of pregnancy associated deaths, despite comprising less than half of the population. This disparity is a result of systemic medical racism, geographical barriers, and a lack of available culturally reverent care. Community-based collectives have emerged to fill in the gaps left by the healthcare system by providing essential services to underserved communities, specifically Black women. These organizations have proven the potential of ‘non-traditional’ healthcare models to change the …

The March Toward Indian Black Solidarity, Tara Marella Weber Dec 2024

The March Toward Indian Black Solidarity, Tara Marella Weber

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This essay explores Indian Americans’ nuanced identity, privilege, and historical relationship to Black Americans. Today, Black and Indian American racial identities are often isolated from one another due to the effects of White Supremacy and Anti-Blackness within the Indian American diaspora. This paper assumes that complicity and conflict are not the end, but anti-racism and solidarity are possible within the diaspora. The paper will begin with a brief explanation of terms and phrases concerning my paper. I will attempt to answer two major research questions: What systems were put into place by White Supremacist Institutions to position Indian Americans as …
