Pediatric Flecainide Pharmacogenomics: A Roadmap To Delivering Precision-Based Care To Pediatrics Arrhythmias., Ronald Palmen, Mollie Walton, Jonathan B. Wagner

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Flecainide acetate is a Class 1c anti-arrhythmic with a potent sodium voltage gated channel blockade which is utilized for the second-line treatment of tachyarrhythmias in children and adults. Given its narrow therapeutic index, the individualization of drug therapy is of utmost importance for clinicians. Despite efforts to improve anti-arrhythmic drug therapy, there remain knowledge gaps regarding the impact of variation in the genes relevant to flecainide's disposition and response. This variability is compounded in developing children whose drug disposition and response pathways may remain immature. The purpose of this comprehensive review is to outline flecainide's disposition and response pathways while …

Frenemies: Why The Ftc Should Explore The Utility Of State Copas To Address Anticompetitive Consolidation In Healthcare, Alicia Gilbert Dec 2024

Frenemies: Why The Ftc Should Explore The Utility Of State Copas To Address Anticompetitive Consolidation In Healthcare, Alicia Gilbert

Louisiana Law Review

Much like other ‘90s trends, Certificates of Public Advantage (COPAs) are making a comeback. States have the potential to use COPAs as a unique healthcare antitrust enforcement mechanism. Rather than following a regime that exclusively focuses on price and output like traditional antitrust analysis, COPAs allow for greater consideration of other efficiencies, such as quality and access to care. And COPAs are designed to protect consumers through regulation rather than by protecting competition. Yet the policy position of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on COPAs ignores these opportunities, blanketly viewing COPAs as a threat to competition. This Article critiques the …

Enhancing Dignity Amongst Persons With Dementia Through Occupational Engagement, Habeeba Ahmed, Amy Lyons-Brown Ms, Otd, Otr/L Dec 2024

Enhancing Dignity Amongst Persons With Dementia Through Occupational Engagement, Habeeba Ahmed, Amy Lyons-Brown Ms, Otd, Otr/L

Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

Dementia is a cognitive impairment that impacts an individual's memory, judgement, safety awareness, and emotions which can interfere with their activities of daily living. As the condition progresses, the person living with dementia (PLWD) may require a care partner to help them complete their daily tasks. Having a care partner and being a care partner can be challenging for both, the PLWD and their care partner, as there begins to be a shift in their independence. The PLWD must rely on their care partner to help them throughout their day, leading to a decrease in independence and occupational engagement. When …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Background: It is known that being the adult child of a parent with an alcohol use disorder (ACoA) can confer a wide variety of increased health and psychological risks, including higher rates of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. Additionally, ACoAs are at greater risk of developing alcohol/substance use disorders (AUDs/SUDs) than individuals from families without a history of AUDs.

Methods: ACoA individuals with risky hazardous alcohol use (n = 14) and those not engaged in hazardous use (n = 14) were compared to a group of healthy controls. We examined structural brain differences and applied machine learning algorithms …

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back: Illinois’ New Rule On Punitive Damages In Wrongful Death Cases, Alberto Bernabe Dec 2024

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back: Illinois’ New Rule On Punitive Damages In Wrongful Death Cases, Alberto Bernabe

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

On August 2023, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill into law that, for the first time, allows the imposition of punitive damages in torts cases that originate in someone’s death. Unfortunately, the law is flawed because it still unjustifiably bans the imposition of punitive damages in medical and legal malpractice cases. In doing so, by looking to minimize the extent of possible liability in malpractice cases, the legislature focused too much on protecting tortfeasors who act egregiously and too little on creating incentives to reduce the incidence of conduct that constitutes malpractice. As it is, the state of the …

A Right To Be Heard: A Proposal For Independent Victim’S Counsel For Sexual Assault Survivors, Madelyn Hayward Dec 2024

A Right To Be Heard: A Proposal For Independent Victim’S Counsel For Sexual Assault Survivors, Madelyn Hayward

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In the last two decades, there have been several helpful and progressive reforms dedicated to changing the landscape of sexual violence. Yet, survivors of sexual assault lack a voice in the criminal justice process. The support offered by victim advocates and coordinators allows victims to be seen but not heard by the court. This Note contends that the progressive step the criminal justice system must take is an independent victim’s counsel program similar to the United States military. This Note proposes model legislation establishing an Independent Victim’s Counsel program in federal and state criminal justice systems. It is time for …

Waves Of Change: A Call To Federally Safeguard Against Climate-Driven Floods, Trevor Johnson Dec 2024

Waves Of Change: A Call To Federally Safeguard Against Climate-Driven Floods, Trevor Johnson

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The average flood event in the United States costs Americans $4.7 billion. Flood events have become more frequent, widespread, and of longer duration due to climate change. The United States attempts to combat the emerging threat of flooding through federal and private insurance programs. Still, as flooding risk rises, property owners are burdened by the responsibility to assess and prepare for these risks independently since standard homeowners’ and renters’ insurance does not cover flood damage under any circumstances in the United States. Rural communities are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to economic foundations that are intricately …

Detecting Multiple Paternity In Mule Deer Using Kinship Values, Madeline K. Martin, Brock Mcmillan, Paul Frandsen, Sydney Lamb, Randy Larsen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Multiple paternity is an ecological phenomenon that plays an important role in reproductive dynamics and population genetics; the presence and rate of multiple paternity can shed light on reproductive behavior and the potential genetic effects of human management. Previous methods have estimated multiple paternity using genetic markers such as microsatellites, and require DNA from both parents and their offspring. However, evolving genomic technology promotes use of alternative genomic methods and acquiring paternal DNA from free-ranging animals is often difficult or impossible. We propose kinship values derived from single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as a tool to predict multiple paternity. Calculating kinship values …
