The Moderation Effect Of Age On The Influence Of Shift Work Practices On Organizational Citizenship Behaviour Of Medics In Tanzania ' S Government Hospitals, Castissima Mella, John J. Sanga, Severine S. Kessy
Business Management Review
This study examines the moderation effect of age on the influence of Shift Work Practices on the dimensions of organisational citizenship behaviours (OCB). Data were collected from 330 randomly-selected medics working in Tanzania ' s government hospitals. Results from the analysis conducted using Structural Equation Modelling with AMOS indicate statistically significant direct effects of shift work practices on all the three dimensions of OCB namely, conscientiousness, sportsmanship and civic virtue. Results also show that age significantly moderates the influence of shift-work practices on sportsmanship and civic virtue. The findings imply that how shift-work practices influence OCB behaviours isn't straightforward €” …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Midlife risk factors such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) confer a significantly increased risk of cognitive impairment in later life with executive function, memory, and attention domains often affected first. Spatiotemporal gait characteristics are emerging as important integrative biomarkers of neurocognitive function and of later dementia risk. We examined 24 spatiotemporal gait parameters across five domains of gait previously linked to cognitive function on usual-pace, maximal-pace, and cognitive dual-task gait conditions in 102 middle-aged adults with (57.5 ± 8.0 years; 40% female) and without (57.0 ± 8.3 years; 62.1% female) T2DM. Neurocognitive function was measured using a neuropsychological assessment …

Exploring Cultural, Health, And Technology Intersections: A Focus On Migrant Experiences, Merna Mina, Sahij Gill
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
Despite the plethora of theories and frameworks addressing culture, health, and technology adoption, there remains a notable absence of a unifying theory that comprehensively encompasses all three aspects, particularly concerning newcomers. The Health Belief Model, for example, underscores individual perceptions and attitudes toward health yet fails to consider the intricate interplay between cultural factors and technology adoption among immigrant populations. The Healthy Immigrant Effect, which posits that immigrants often exhibit better health outcomes than native-born individuals, does not mention the role of technology on health outcomes. Acculturation theories, while shedding light on the adaptation process, often fall short of explaining …

Retirement planning has been extensively studied in developed countries; however, it has received scant scholarly attention in developing nations. This study examines the role of cognitive factors associated with retirement planning intentions in the context of a developing country, focusing on financial risk tolerance and self-efficacy within the cognitive appraisal theory framework, considering the mediating role of retirement planning attitudes and the moderating impact of financial resource availability. Data collected from surveys of 301 adults in Dhaka, Bangladesh were analyzed using a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. Findings revealed that retirement planning attitudes mediate the relationship between …

Deserts Still Need Water: Using Adr Processes To Support Rural Residents And Counter The Challenges Stemming From The Shortage Of Lawyers In The “Great American Legal Desert”, Whitney Heuermann
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
Researchers dub rural America the “Great American Legal Desert,” deriving its nickname from the fact that roughly 20% of the nation's population lives in rural America while only 2% of small law practices are located in rural areas. This comment proposes that an increase in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) programming and usage serves as a viable avenue to alleviate the lawyer shortage’s harmful effects in rural America. This note begins by generally identifying ADR’s pros, such as cost, privacy, and community preservation, and then correlating these advantages to various aspects of rural America. ADR programming in Kentucky, Idaho, and Kansas …

Using Discrete-Event Simulation To Balance Staff Allocation And Patient Flow Between Clinic And Surgery In A Pediatric Hospital Setting, John Forbus
Theses and Dissertations
We review the problem of a system-level balanced scheduling scenario. A hospital clinic has a queue for patients needing care. After being seen in clinic, many require follow-up surgery, for which they also wait in a queue. The rate-limiting factor is physician availability for both clinic visits and surgical cases. Much existing work has been done to optimize clinic appointments, as well as to optimize surgical appointments. This novel approach models the entire patient journey at the system level, through both clinic and surgery, to optimize the total patient experience. A discrete-event simulation model of the system is built based …

Episodic Memory Influences On Decision-Making: An Fmri Investigation Of Young And Older Adult Populations, Julie Van
Theses and Dissertations
Episodic memory involves the ability to remember specific events and personal experiences. It shares computational and neural resources with episodic future thinking, or the ability to simulate future episodes in anticipation of situations that have not yet occurred. Activity in the frontal lobe has been associated with episodic memory formation, as functional connectivity between the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been associated with the organization and manipulation of information when forming memories. At its core, episodic memory extends to several other functional domains by recombining past information to construct future scenarios, facilitating an aspect of "mental …

INTRODUCTION Cognitive reserve might mitigate the risk of Alzheimer's dementia among memory clinic patients. No study has examined the potential modifying role of stress on this relation.
METHODS We examined cross-sectional associations of the cognitive reserve index (CRI; education, occupational complexity, physical and leisure activities, and social health) with cognitive performance and AD-related biomarkers among 113 memory clinic patients. The longitudinal association between CRI and cognition over a 3-year follow-up was assessed. We examined whether associations were influenced by perceived stress and five measures of diurnal salivary cortisol.
RESULTS Higher CRI scores were associated with better cognition. Adjusting for cortisol …

Caloric restriction (CR) modifies lifespan and aging biology in animal models. The Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE™) 2 trial tested translation of these findings to humans. CALERIE™ randomized healthy, nonobese men and premenopausal women (age 21–50y; BMI 22.0–27.9 kg/m2), to 25% CR or ad-libitum (AL) control (2:1) for 2 years. Prior analyses of CALERIE™ participants' blood chemistries, immunology, and epigenetic data suggest the 2-year CR intervention slowed biological aging. Here, we extend these analyses to test effects of CR on telomere length (TL) attrition. TL was quantified in blood samples collected at baseline, 12-, …

In today’s swiftly aging society, China grapples with the challenge of elderly individuals gradually becoming disconnected from the social fabric, often leading to the phenomenon of empty-nesting, especially in China’s eastern urban areas. Understanding and addressing the needs of the elderly is crucial for designing environments, that give continued meaning to the lives of the elderly, and create connections with the rest of society. Further, the elderly are a resource for families, capable of providing childcare and even housing to younger generations, whether the younger generations want this help or not. In response to the challenge of keeping the elderly …
