K-Pop Strategy Seen From The Viewpoint Of Cultural Hybridity And The Tradition Of The Gwangdae, Hee-Chul Sim, Soel-Ah Kim, Byung-Min Lee
Kritika Kultura
Hallyu (the Korean wave) is an intriguing phenomenon originating from Korea and refers to the current impact of products of South Korean popular culture (especially for music, K-pop). K-pop, a representative product of the Korean Wave, is a multi-layered formation that is composed of hybrid cultural practices and a diverse range of lived experiences. Nowadays, much social and academic attention is being paid to the reason for the success of K-pop. This study deals with how the Korean traditional gwangdae (scaramouche or clown) culture has been passed down to develop into K-pop. For this, diachronic perspectives are applied to analyze …
Monsters In The Pacific: The Philippines In The Hollywood Geopolitical Imaginary, Laurence Marvin S. Castillo
Monsters In The Pacific: The Philippines In The Hollywood Geopolitical Imaginary, Laurence Marvin S. Castillo
Kritika Kultura
The recent announcement of the American strategic pivot to the Asia Pacific calls for the examination of the ways by which the region, particularly its constituent states, is produced in and by the US imperialist imaginary. This essay responds to such critical imperative by analyzing the geopolitical imagination of the Philippine nation-space in the Hollywood giant monster films Pacific Rim (2013) and Godzilla (2014). The essay first discusses how the nation-state remains a crucial participant in the globalized expansion of capital, and how its participation is imagined in the realm of cinematic geopolitics. It then examines the development of the …

Knighthood In The Wilderness: Ecocritical Readings Of Nature And Chivalry In The World Of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Dajana Memko
Theses and Dissertations
Many interpretations of the Green Knight portray him as a personification of nature or as nature’s embodiment. Ecocriticism, however, challenges a more anthropocentric approach, calling into question deeply ingrained ideals of chivalry and human dominion over nature. The Green Knight is a hybrid creature whose striking features mark his otherness; yet, through his familiarity, he challenges the knight of Camelot and asks them to consider their chivalric identities as well as the nature of their Trojan ancestry and legacy. Among them, Gawain is forced to confront his identity as he ventures into the wilderness of Wirral, and his interactions with …

Characterizing The Francisella Tularensis Universal Stress Protein, Benjamin Girardo
Characterizing The Francisella Tularensis Universal Stress Protein, Benjamin Girardo
Theses & Dissertations
Francisella tularensis is an extremely virulent pathogen responsible for the zoonotic disease tularemia. F. tularensis employs various defense mechanisms to survive and persist under diverse environmental and host-induced stress conditions. Despite its significance, the full spectrum of stress factors that enable F. tularensis persistence remain inadequately understood. In many bacterial species, universal stress proteins (Usp) play a crucial role in managing adverse conditions. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of Usp in F. tularensis as a means of clarifying the stress response mechanisms of this pathogen. The F. tularensis Usp is encoded by a single, highly …

Power-Conscious Legal Work: Building A Roadmap For Rural Access To Justice Through Trust, Accountability, & Trauma-Informed Practices, Cayley Balser, Antonio M. Coronado
Alaska Law Review
The importance of trauma-informed practices has never been greater. In the United States, most of the population has experienced at least one traumatic event in their life. Experiencing a traumatic event may have long-lasting impacts on physical health, including disruption to all major system functioning. Mental health impacts may include behavior changes, memory challenges, inability to complete routine tasks, difficulty with interpersonal relationships, and other symptoms associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Extant literature examines the association between past trauma experiences and later interactions with the civil justice system, including litigant conceptualizations of legal system engagement as a traumatic event …

An In-Depth Analysis And Comparison Of Eco And Non-Eco Surfboard Waxes, Markos Kaskaneas - Efthymiou
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Questions regarding the sustainability of petroleum-based surfboard waxes gave rise to the development and marketing of a sustainable alternative called “Eco” surf wax. The chemistry behind surf waxes is generally unknown and there is no published research on the area of surf waxes. In this analysis, the chemical properties of both types of waxes were investigated, to determine the difference between non-eco and eco waxes and between different water temperature rating waxes. 15 surf wax samples (10 non-eco, 5 eco) were extracted into organic and inorganic fractions and analysed by FT-IR, GC-MS, and HTGC-FID/MS. Multivariate statistical analysis was also performed. …
Developing A Method To Identify Tyre Particles By Detecting Benzothiazole Via Gc-Ms, Emma Paull
Developing A Method To Identify Tyre Particles By Detecting Benzothiazole Via Gc-Ms, Emma Paull
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Tyre particles are a dominant source of microplastic pollution in our environment. However, their chemical and physical properties are poorly understood and no standardised methods for identifying and quantifying them exist. This study looked to develop a method to identify tyre particles using two tyre samples of differing particle sizes, fine (62 - 125 µm) and coarse (250 – 500 µm). Both samples underwent ultrasound-assisted extraction before being analysed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in both full scan and SIM mode, using benzothiazole as a marker. Both samples were also analysed via particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and …

Microplastics In The Mix: Types And Retention Of Microplastics Within A Mixed Species Seagrass Meadow In The Tamar Estuary, Ida S. Kreuze
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Microplastic pollution in coastal systems is becoming increasingly prevalent and a commonly discussed topic in science and the media. Seagrass beds have been identified as highly vulnerable environments to microplastic pollution due to their nature as traps for particulate matter in the water column, and their role in habitat production and blue carbon storage makes them of high conservation concern. This study examined a mixed species seagrass bed in the Tamar Estuary in Plymouth Sound, composed of Nanozostera noltei and a morphology of Zostera marina, to identify how seagrass shoot density and sediment particle size impacted the number and …

Synthesis And Characterisation Of An Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor, Elijah Rahman-Riding
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors are currently the only effective treatment for people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects 50 million people worldwide at present but is expected to rise dramatically over the next 30 years. The aim of this research was to synthesise an AChE inhibitor derivative of tacrine, 4-chloro-2(((1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridin-9yl)imino)methyl)phenol (chlorophenol tacrine). This was achieved by first synthesising tacrine, evidencing successful synthesis and assaying purity of the product, then, synthesising a simple derivative, acetyl tacrine, before chlorophenol tacrine. At every stage of the investigation comprehensive structural analysis of each product was obtained using FT-IR, CHN analysis, GC-FID, …
Next Steps In Online Courts: Accelerating Access Tojustice Through Court Technology, J.J. Prescott
Next Steps In Online Courts: Accelerating Access Tojustice Through Court Technology, J.J. Prescott
Alaska Law Review
For more than a decade, state courts have been expanding access to justice by adopting online dispute resolution (ODR) platforms and other outward-facing communication technologies. At a deep level, these reforms aim at improving society by bolstering the rule of law. At a surface level, these innovations recognize that the justice system works better when courts and law are easier and less costly to understand and use. In important respects, these efforts have been a success. The accessibility of many state courts is considerably more robust today than it was ten years ago, at least for small-stakes cases, like traffic …
Alaska's Healthcare Markets: The Free Market Is Nota "Cure", Katie Raya
Alaska's Healthcare Markets: The Free Market Is Nota "Cure", Katie Raya
Alaska Law Review
Healthcare reform in the United States requires a nuanced approach to improve quality and access while managing costs—a challenge particularly pronounced in Alaska. Despite being the highest spender on healthcare globally, the U.S. fails to deliver commensurate health outcomes, with Alaska exemplifying these systemic issues. The state faces the highest healthcare costs in the nation yet performs poorly in quality and access metrics. This situation has prompted urgent legislative scrutiny of existing policies, such as the Certificate of Need (CON) Law and the 80th Percentile Rule. This Note critically evaluates the argument that deregulating Alaska's healthcare market will lead to …
An Optimization Framework For Data Enrichment: A First Principles Approach To Designing Optimal Smoothers And Splines, Griffin Michael Kearney
An Optimization Framework For Data Enrichment: A First Principles Approach To Designing Optimal Smoothers And Splines, Griffin Michael Kearney
Dissertations - ALL
We develop a general framework for state estimation in systems modeled with stochastic dynamics and noisy measurements. Our approach is based on maximum likelihood estimation and employs a variety of techniques from optimization theory including the calculus of variations and discrete optimization to derive optimality conditions for many different types of problems. We make no rigid assumptions on the form of the mapping from measurements to state-estimate or on the distributions of the random processes, making the framework more general than existing techniques such as splines, Kalman smoothing or Gaussian Process Regressions, which are subject to limiting restrictions and modeling …

Ilaw Ng Ibang Tahanan: Transnational Mothering Practices Of Overseas Filipina Domestic Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Arvin John C. Ramirez
Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students
Filipino mothers traditionally serve as primary caregivers and, at times, as the main breadwinners for their families. With limited opportunities in the Philippines, many seek employment abroad, leaving their children behind. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority indicated that female Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) often engage in elementary jobs, including domestic work and caregiving. The COVID-19 pandemic added a challenge in fulfilling their maternal needs since health and safety have become everyone’s priority. This study investigates the transnational mothering practices of overseas Filipina domestic workers during the pandemic and how these practices differ from those before the health crisis. Through …

Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious medical condition that increases the risk of postpartum mortality and affects the ability of a postpartum individual to take care of their newborn. Until 2023, intravenously-administered brexanolone was the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medication for PPD. Brexanolone’s route of administration poses significant barriers to accessibility and convenience. Other treatment options, such as psychotherapy and antidepressants, often require long-term commitment and may not provide rapid relief for severe symptoms. In August 2023, the FDA approved zuranolone as an oral medication for PPD, which enhances treatment accessibility and offers patients a more flexible, outpatient …

Governing The Paddies: Emotions, Dispossession, And Gendered Struggles For Resource Access In Rice Farming In Tolima, Colombia, Akemi Inamoto
Dissertations - ALL
Colombia produces nearly one million tons of irrigated rice annually, almost exclusively for domestic consumption, with 72% of this production driven by smallholder farmers. In the department of Tolima, rice farming plays a significant role in both the local political economy and the agrarian landscape. This dissertation engages with feminist political ecology, critical agrarian studies, and debates on agrarian transformation to examine the everyday manifestations of dispossession that shape the lives of smallholder farmers and farmworkers in rural Tolima. I focus on how gender and class dynamics structure access to resources and opportunities, with special attention to the experiences and …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This review provides a critical assessment of knowledge regarding the occurrence and behaviour of volatile, low molecular weight amines, particularly methylamines and quaternary amines, in marine aquatic systems. It provides an up-to-date evaluation of their presence within marine ecosystems, the processes likely to control their flux across the sea-air interface, and analytical techniques associated with their measurement. Interest in the occurrence and cycling of these groups of compounds in seawater has increased within the last 10–15 years, due to their potential role in climate regulation. As such, the need for wider measurements and mechanistic studies to elucidate their role within …

Revisiting Territorial Sovereignty: Origins, Legitimacy, And Modern Implications, Henan Hu
Revisiting Territorial Sovereignty: Origins, Legitimacy, And Modern Implications, Henan Hu
San Diego International Law Journal
The conventional linkage between territory and sovereignty in international law requires reevaluation, with territorial rights shifting from states to nations. Drawing on Anthony Smith’s theory of historical continuity between pre-modern ethnic communities and modern nations, this article argues that legitimate claims to territory are grounded in the historical consolidation of social, economic, and political ties by ethnic groups to specific lands. It traces the evolution of territorial rights from loosely defined ethnic living areas and fluid state boundaries to the modern conception of national territories under effective control. By distinguishing sovereignty as a construct of the state and territory as …

Climatic oscillations are considered primary factors influencing the distribution of various life forms on Earth. Large species adapted to cold climates are particularly vulnerable to extinction due to climate changes. In our study, we investigated whether temperature increase since the Late Pleistocene and the contraction of environmental niche during the Holocene were the main factors contributing to the decreasing range of moose (Alces alces) in Europe. We also examined whether there were significant differences in environmental conditions between areas inhabited by moose in Europe and Asia, that could support the division of moose into western and eastern forms, as suggested …
Re-Indigenizing And Collaboratively Tending Urban Greenspaces, Divinity Nnenne Adewale
Re-Indigenizing And Collaboratively Tending Urban Greenspaces, Divinity Nnenne Adewale
University Honors Theses
This work details the active process of land tending with the intention of re-Indigenization in the Pacific Northwest at several Portland sites; The Native American Student Community Center, PSU Oak Savanna, and the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Land tending is an intuitive process, one rooted in love and respect for life of all forms as well as becoming the perpetual student; land tending is not a skill to be mastered, only practiced. Unlike environmental management, tending cannot be done separate from the earth, in a classroom or otherwise. Connections are what tending is built on top of: the foundation; effort …
Subaltern Planet Of Cultural Studies, Charlie Samuya Veric
Subaltern Planet Of Cultural Studies, Charlie Samuya Veric
Kritika Kultura
A contribution to a mostly unwritten history, the essay provides a preliminary account of cultural studies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America from decolonization to globalization. My intention is two-fold, namely, to contribute to the history of cultural studies in the global South and experiment with the writing of planetary history to determine the lessons that can be learned when totality is imagined from below. I argue that whether it is the geopolitics of decolonization in Asia, the politics of indigenization in Africa, or the critique of knowledge-production in Latin America, cultural studies signifies the unfinished task of decolonization.
Sisa's Vengeance: Rizal And The Mother Of All Insurgencies, E. San Juan Jr.
Sisa's Vengeance: Rizal And The Mother Of All Insurgencies, E. San Juan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
A new appraisal of Rizal is needed today in the light of 9/11, the collapse of finance capital, state terrorism, and neoliberal decadence and barbarism. Rizal’s revolutionary critique can be discovered by shifting the center of inquiry to the Dapitan years and after, the Liga’s resonance, and the Sisa-Maria Clara-Salome nexus. By exposing the limits of Simoun’s romantic idealism, Padre Florentino’s eschatological impulse, and the carnivalesque colonial world bereft of god/nomos, Rizal anticipates the post-capitalist predicament. Women’s vengeance against patriarchal nihilism lies submerged in Rizal’s communicative action to the Malolos collective, mobilizing emergent and residual historical forces in a dialectical …
What, And Where, Is Philippine Studies? A Response, Charlie Samuya Veric
What, And Where, Is Philippine Studies? A Response, Charlie Samuya Veric
Kritika Kultura
The paper responds to the papers on Philippine Studies presented in the 126th MLA Annual Convention. The panel consists of T. Ruanni F. Tupas, Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao, Cynthia Tolentino, and Vicente L. Rafael. The paper contends that what is most instructive of these papers is their cogent treatment of Philippine Studies as a problem, a mode of critical inquiry, more than a field of studies. The paper challenges scholars to explore Philippine Studies in a truly transnational perspective, to look for Filipino imaginaries beyond the United States, in unexpected sites.
Where And When Is Modernism, Mark Wollaeger
Where And When Is Modernism, Mark Wollaeger
Kritika Kultura
The paper explores some longstanding definitional problems in literary modernism with specific reference to studying modernism on a global scale: What counts as modernism once we start to look for signs of it across the globe? The author examines the question in the context of his recent editorial project, Global Modernisms, which draws together multiple international and disciplinary perspectives in order to create a discursive space in which a wide range of foreign language productions can be brought into productive dialogue. Raising the question of whether a distinction between “modern” and “modernist” can be sustained, he suggests the need for …

The Individual, Collective, And Cyclical Transformational Learning Created By Food Tourism Education, Ziene Mottiar, Mairtin Macconiomaire
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
Research on food tourism education is rare, despite a significant growth in food tourism literature in recent decades. A food tourism module was developed for a new MA Gastronomy and Food Studies at the Technological University Dublin, Ireland in 2017. This article, written by the two module creators and lecturers, analyses reflections of two cohorts of mature post-graduate students (n.14). We explore the transformational role (if any) that this module had. Then, using purposive sampling, employ semi-structured interviews with five graduates who had a collective transformational learning experience – setting up the food tourism network Wicklow Naturally – to explore …
