Strategies For Financing Small Businesses, Tina P. Do

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Accessing financial capital is an essential aspect of small business survival because the lack of funding is detrimental to the performance and sustainability of small businesses. Small business owners are concerned about gaining access to financial capital because it is vital to small businesses’ survival. Grounded in Donaldson’s pecking-order-theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies small business owners used to sustain their businesses. The participants were three small business owners of the restaurant industry who successfully accessed capital from banks and financial institutions to help sustain their businesses. Data were collected through semistructured interviews …

Efficient Primary Education Service Delivery In The Local Nigerian Government, Kezia Igwebueze Feb 2024

Efficient Primary Education Service Delivery In The Local Nigerian Government, Kezia Igwebueze

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The inefficient service delivery of local government in Nigeria in the provision and maintenance of primary education and educational facilities is problematic. There is the dearth of instructional, recreational, residential, and social facilities in the learning environment that enable teachers and learners to carry out their work and assimilate efficiently. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the determining factors that influence the culture of inefficiency in the primary education service delivery function across local government councils in Nigeria and investigate how the culture of efficiency can be recreated. Sutherland’s differential association theory provided the theoretical foundation …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Thousands of artificial (‘human-made’) structures are present in the marine environment, many at or approaching end-of-life and requiring urgent decisions regarding their decommissioning. No consensus has been reached on which decommissioning option(s) result in optimal environmental and societal outcomes, in part, owing to a paucity of evidence from real-world decommissioning case studies. To address this significant challenge, we asked a worldwide panel of scientists to provide their expert opinion. They were asked to identify and characterise the ecosystem effects of artificial structures in the sea, their causes and consequences, and to identify which, if any, should be retained following decommissioning. …

A Case Report And Review On The Anesthetic Considerations Of Anterior Mediastinal Masses, Carter A. Schulz, Joshua D. Mohs, Andrew M. Reuter

Aesculapius Journal (Health Sciences & Medicine)

Case summary: A 15-year-old female presented with chest pain, dyspnea, and weight loss. A chest X-ray and subsequent CT scan revealed a large anterior mediastinal mass with cervical lymphadenopathy and pericardial effusion. Two biopsies under general anesthesia were performed, with the latter confirming classic Hodgkin lymphoma, nodular sclerosis subtype.

Discussion: This case underscores the significant clinical challenges posed by anterior mediastinal masses due to their proximity to vital cardiovascular and respiratory structures. Physiologic changes during general anesthesia can exacerbate these challenges. Preoperative assessment, including imaging and symptom evaluation, is crucial to guide operative planning. It is key to individualize the …

Grazing Behavior Of The Endemic Lagune Cattle In The Sub-Humid Savannahs Of Benin, E. Sonon, G. G. Alowanou, B. I. Koura, O. J. Makinde, A. B. Gbangboche

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The indigenous Lagune, a breed tolerant to trypanosomiasis, is an excellent candidate to meet the ongoing environmental changes sustainably. This cattle breed could be kept like small ruminants, tethered in grasslands, or free grazing. A study was conducted to assess the grazing behavior of Lagune cattle under the two grazing systems to identify the best systems for sustainable production and conservation of the breed. For this study, four Lagune cattle farms, 02 under free-roaming and 02 others in the tethered system, were selected in the original belt of the Lagune cattle, the agro-ecological (AEZ) zones of Valley and Pobe. The …

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Over the last 10,000 y, humans have manipulated fallow deer populations with varying outcomes. Persian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica) are now endangered. European fallow deer (Dama dama) are globally widespread and are simultaneously considered wild, domestic, endangered, invasive and are even the national animal of Barbuda and Antigua. Despite their close association with people, there is no consensus regarding their natural ranges or the timing and circumstances of their human-mediated translocations and extirpations. Our mitochondrial analyses of modern and archaeological specimens revealed two distinct clades of European fallow deer present in Anatolia and the Balkans. Zooarchaeological evidence …

Intersecting Identities And Adjustment To The Primary-Secondary School Transition: An Integrative Review, Joanne Harris, Rebecca Nowland, Megan Todd Feb 2024

Intersecting Identities And Adjustment To The Primary-Secondary School Transition: An Integrative Review, Joanne Harris, Rebecca Nowland, Megan Todd

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

The primary-to-secondary school transition is a milestone for children because of the multiple changes they must navigate. Although most adjust successfully, approximately 30% of children have difficulties during this transition. Intersecting identities are also likely to influence how children navigate the adjustment of the school transfer, but there have been no syntheses of existing evidence relating to the impacts of intersectionality. We conducted an integrative review using eight databases (Education database, ERIC, ProQuest Education, PsychInfo, Scopus, SocIndex, Sociology Database, and Web of Science) and searched for quantitative or qualitative studies that examined how intersecting identities impact children’s self-concept, mental health, …
