Educator Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of Attendance Centers, Marilynn Ross Mar 2024

Educator Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of Attendance Centers, Marilynn Ross

Ed.D. Capstone Reports

Little research exists regarding grade span configuration and academic achievement in the state of Illinois. With the continued pressure of accountability, schools find themselves under pressure to positively impact student academic achievement. This study describes the strategies and approaches used in elementary schools in the state of Illinois that have been designated by the state as either commendable or exemplary. The two research questions that guide this study are: (a) What effect will different grade span configurations have on the IAR of students receiving instruction at attendance centers in the content area of math? (b) What effect will different grade …

“Am I No Longer Gifted?”: Imagining A More Capacious World For Black Girls In Alternative Education, Taryrn T.C. Brown, Brittany N. Anderson, Kiarra Wigfall

Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"

Advancing the discourse on the experiences of historically marginalized students in alternative learning settings, this track delves into the intricate terrain through which Black girls in alternative education navigate their high-ability and gifted educational journeys within these distinctive learning environments. In this sphere, we advance the evolution of innovative theoretical and pedagogical paradigms in alternative education, transcending conventional boundaries and drawing from the diverse lived experiences of Black girls. In this regard, the conceptualization of the Black Girl Educology (BGE) framework embodies this ethos, fostering an environment conducive to inquiry and exploration of essential variables in alternative education. Our BGE …

Gravity Chains: Estimating Bilateral Trade Flows When Parts And Components Trade Is Important, Daria Taglioni, Richard Baldwin Mar 2024

Gravity Chains: Estimating Bilateral Trade Flows When Parts And Components Trade Is Important, Daria Taglioni, Richard Baldwin

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

Trade is measured on a gross sales basis while GDP is measured on a net sales basis, i.e. value added. The rapid internationalisation of production in the last two decades has meant that gross trade flows are increasingly unrepresentative of the value-added flows. This fact has important implications for the estimation of the gravity equation. We present empirical evidence that the standard gravity equation performs poorly by some measures when it is applied to bilateral flows where the parts and components trade is important. We also provide a simple theoretical foundation for a modified gravity equation that is suited to …

Financial Deepening, Property Rights, And Poverty: Evidence From Sub-Saharan Africa, Raju Jan Singh, Yifei Huang Mar 2024

Financial Deepening, Property Rights, And Poverty: Evidence From Sub-Saharan Africa, Raju Jan Singh, Yifei Huang

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

Recent studies on the relationship between financial development and poverty have been inconclusive. Some claim that, by allowing more entrepreneurs to obtain financing, financial development improves the allocation of capital, which has a particularly large impact on the poor. Others argue that it is primarily the rich and politically connected who benefit from improvements in the financial system. This paper looks at a sample of 37 countries in sub-Saharan Africa from 1992 through 2006. Its results suggest that financial deepening could widen income inequality and increase poverty, if not accompanied by stronger property rights. Similarly, interest rate and lending liberalization …

Condition Of Banks Listed On The Warsaw Stock Exchange During The First 3 Months Of The Pandemic In Poland, Zbigniew Korzeb, Paweł Niedziółka

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

The aim of the paper is to assess the condition of commercial banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange after the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. The consolidated results for Q1 and Q2 2020 were used focusing on selected evaluation areas such as: capital adequacy, profitability, liquidity, credit portfolio quality as well as operational efficiency. The authors concluded that as a result of the credit crunch and the retention of previously earned profits, almost every medium (except for mBank SA) and every large bank experienced an increase in capital adequacy ratios. Moreover, the profitability of the …

Utilizing Watershed-Based Planning As A Tool To Protect Source Water: A Case Study From The Lower Caw Caw Swamp, Kathryn Ellis, Eric Odom, Gregory Carbone Mar 2024

Utilizing Watershed-Based Planning As A Tool To Protect Source Water: A Case Study From The Lower Caw Caw Swamp, Kathryn Ellis, Eric Odom, Gregory Carbone

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

A watershed-based plan (WBP) is an example of a management tool that addresses nonpoint sources of pollution that affect surface water quality. We apply a simple spreadsheet tool to the Lower Caw Caw Swamp watershed in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to quantify the impact of modest management practices on water quality, and to examine how climate and land-use change could affect water quality in future decades. Three separate climate and land use scenarios are used to measure annual pollutant loads in the basin. Our analysis shows that E. coli loads in current conditions are largely attributed to anthropogenic sources of bacteria …

Fintech Regulation And The Developmentof The Fintech Sector In The European Union, Radosław Ciukaj, Mateusz Folwarski

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

The aim of the article is to identify the relationship between the level of regulation of various segments of the FinTech industry and the level of development of this sector. To address this research problem, the paper analyses the scope of regulation in 14 segments of the FinTech sector, and based on that, develops the FinTech Regulation Index for the individual European Union countries. Then, the paper uses this index to examine if there is a relationship between the level of regulation and the level of FinTech development in the various European Union countries. The econometric analysis confirmed the initial …

Sino-Russian Cross-Border Tourism, Vladislav Chernov, Liubov Skavronskaya, Mariia Perelygina, Alexandra Bec, Elham Falatoonitoosi

Books / Book chapters

Geographic periphery regions are the focus of sustainable regional development research, with ongoing discussions on coreperiphery relationships to address economic disadvantage and remoteness. However, periphery regions face challenges due to the high efficiency of core regions. Tourism provides an alternative economic landscape, revitalizing stagnant sectors and driving strategic exploration. The Sino-Russian border, spanning 4,209 km, represents a periphery where tourism plays a vital role. This chapter views Sino-Russian cross-border tourism through the lens of the coreperiphery model, suggests two conceptual models of developing experiential cores in the cross-border areas of geographic peripheries, and argues for peripheries’ potential to become sustainable …

Indigenous Biocentric Law Against A Legacy Of Violence: Chilean Water Regulation, Free Trade With The Eu, And Violations Of Mapuche And Aymara Rights To Water, Joseph Jonathan Edward Simard Mar 2024

Indigenous Biocentric Law Against A Legacy Of Violence: Chilean Water Regulation, Free Trade With The Eu, And Violations Of Mapuche And Aymara Rights To Water, Joseph Jonathan Edward Simard

LLM Theses

Assertions of Mapuche and Aymara law in defence of waters are hampered by a legacy of state violence, and continued appropriation of Indigenous worldviews under commodified conceptions of nature. I interrogate and analyze the connection between Chile’s water market regime, natural resource extraction, water scarcity, and free trade and foreign investment. Chile’s Water Code facilitates water-intensive agribusiness, mineral extraction, and salmon aquaculture as part of export-oriented economy. At the same time, free trade agreements signed with EU countries knowingly encourage overextraction of water and natural resources. I argue in favour of grassroots movements toward land restitution and jurisdiction as solution. …

Exchangeable Versus Residual Metals In Naturally Aged Plastic Litter, Sajjad Abbasi, Andrew Turner, Katarzyna Jędruchniewicz, Krzysztof Różyło, Patryk Oleszczuk Mar 2024

Exchangeable Versus Residual Metals In Naturally Aged Plastic Litter, Sajjad Abbasi, Andrew Turner, Katarzyna Jędruchniewicz, Krzysztof Różyło, Patryk Oleszczuk

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Metals may be associated with plastics as additives arising from manufacture or through acquisition from the environment, but these associations are often poorly defined or referred to synonymously when considering metal availability. In this study, samples of plastic litter (n = 22) have been collected from various environmental and industrial compartments of Lublin Province, Poland, and fractionated according to polymer type (polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, expanded polystyrene, polypropylene, and “mixed”) before being micronised to < 2 mm. Composites (n = 89) were subjected to two phases of a standardised and widely employed sequential extraction protocol (Bureau Communautaire de Reference; BCR) in order to define available (acid-soluble and exchangeable) and residual (soluble in boiling aqua regia) concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. For a given metal, total content, calculated by summing available and residual components, was highly variable, both between locations and amongst polymer categories, reflecting the heterogeneous distribution of a multitude of different additives. Overall, however, concentrations were greatest for Fe, with medians of several hundred to several thousand mg kg−1 amongst the different polymers, and lowest for Cd, Co, and Ni, where nearly all concentrations were below 10 mg kg−1. Median percentage metal …

On Dialogue And Beyond: Positive Environmental Peacebuilding In Palestine, Elsa Barron Mar 2024

On Dialogue And Beyond: Positive Environmental Peacebuilding In Palestine, Elsa Barron

The Journal of Social Encounters

In Palestine, environmental management has been used as a tool of military occupation and oppression. Yet even within that context, many community-based organizations have established programs relating to environmental peacebuilding. Of these initiatives, environmental dialogue programs have received significant attention and resources, even more so since the war in Gaza began in October, 2023. However, a deeper interrogation of these programs reveals the danger that dialogue and collaboration devoid of a critical analysis of power and injustice further perpetuates systemic oppression. Moving these programs into the realm of positive environmental peacebuilding requires a willingness to engage in this structural analysis. …

Environmental Peacebuilding: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Ken Conca Mar 2024

Environmental Peacebuilding: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Ken Conca

The Journal of Social Encounters

The field of environmental peacebuilding emerged as a counter to the idea that violent conflict was an inevitable byproduct of environmental change. Two decades ago, my colleague Geoffrey Dabelko and I published a book, Environmental Peacemaking, sketching the argument that ecological interdependencies could be instrumentalized as a force for peace (Conca & Dabelko, 2002). Other early works from this period focused on the peace opportunities in biodiversity conservation (Matthew et al., 2002) and transboundary protected areas (Brock, 1991; Ali, 2007). Since that time, a substantial community of research and practice has emerged around these ideas. In this essay I discuss …

Economic Efficiency Role In Sustainable Water Development Of Retail Water Providers In The West Bank And Gaza Strip In Palestine, Fuad Yousef Rammal, Bouchta Alkhazzan Mar 2024

Economic Efficiency Role In Sustainable Water Development Of Retail Water Providers In The West Bank And Gaza Strip In Palestine, Fuad Yousef Rammal, Bouchta Alkhazzan

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

It’s widely recognized that within the water sector, economic efficiency can affect the inputs and outputs of the water supply and sanitation service facility. However, based on an interactive situation that requires adjusting the inputs based on the targeted outputs and compared to counterpart facilities, which may create price restrictions that affect the economic sustainability within the water sector. Hence, this study aimed at revealing the economic efficiency role in sustainable water development, for the major water service providers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in Palestine. The research adopted a combined approach (i.e., quantitative and qualitative) by analyzing …

Amnesia, Anamnesis, And Myth-Making In Florida: A Case Study Of Chipco, Eric Hannel Mar 2024

Amnesia, Anamnesis, And Myth-Making In Florida: A Case Study Of Chipco, Eric Hannel

Florida Historical Quarterly

History often finds ways of retaining information deemed "valuable," while discarding information no longer of interest or importance to its scrivener. During this process, those who recount history intentionally or unintentionally forget some details while retaining others, perhaps even embellishing them for later generations. At the nexus of this amnesia and purposeful anamnesis (the way history is remembered), rests American mythmaking. Each layer of mythmaking connects with place or geography representing forgotten as well as recollected details, a reclamation of past events and altered memories that aggrandize, justify, and construct out of messy, complex, and often brutal reality, a sanitized …

Volusia And Vibilia: Companion Plantations On The St. Johns River In Spanish And Territorial East Florida, Lani Friend Mar 2024

Volusia And Vibilia: Companion Plantations On The St. Johns River In Spanish And Territorial East Florida, Lani Friend

Florida Historical Quarterly

The names Volusia and Vibilia are mellifluous, "soft and pleasing to the ear." These are words used by Horatio Dexter to describe the Seminole language, but they are well suited to the names of these Spanish land grant plantations on the St.Johns River. Volusia and Vibilia seem to belong together because they do-they share a semantic affinity; they originate from a common cultural source; they were likely bestowed by the same person/s; and the lands bearing the names are closely linked in their history and development. Volusia and Vibilia were companion plantations in Spanish and Territorial East Florida.

All Disquiet On The Home Front: World War I And Florida, 1914-1920, Gary R. Mormino

Florida Historical Quarterly

On the eve of the First World War, the United States viewed events in Europe through a filter of isolationism and neutrality. Two vast oceans had reinforced an inclination toward internal affairs and paranoia, while engendering suspicion of diplomatic alliances and foreign revolutions. But events in faraway places-Sarajevo, St. Petersburg, and the Somme-made isolation impossible and neutrality improbable.

Expanding Access To Undergraduate Higher Education For China's Ethnic Minority Populations, Yuqian Zhang, D. Eric Archer Mar 2024

Expanding Access To Undergraduate Higher Education For China's Ethnic Minority Populations, Yuqian Zhang, D. Eric Archer

Journal of Critical Global Issues

China has one of the world’s oldest and largest sets of minority affirmative action policies, which provide 125 million individuals from recognized ethnic minority groups with preferences in family planning, school admissions, employment, business financing and taxation, and financial subsidies. This paper aims to examine how China implements preferential policies for ethnic minority undergraduate applicants to its higher education institutions. Policies of preferential admissions in China are designed to compensate for inequalities in educational opportunity among different ethnic groups. This compensatory approach is based on the concept that equal treatment of differently situated groups may itself create inequality. Yet preferential …
