A Composition Of Strategic Harmony: The Role Of Hymnic Elements In The Compositional Strategy Of Amos, Moegagogo S. Solomona Mar 2024

A Composition Of Strategic Harmony: The Role Of Hymnic Elements In The Compositional Strategy Of Amos, Moegagogo S. Solomona

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Scholarship on the book of Amos has oft leaned in favor of a multilayered composition of the prophetic book, citing either post-exilic motifs or unusual thematic transitions as evidence. While most of the book of Amos is typically ascribed to the prophet himself, the attribution of certain portions to the work of later redactors brings into question the integrity of the message Amos seeks to convey, especially regarding a united theological message. Proponents of redaction claim that the portions in question would not have been part of the original composition due to their contents displaying post-exilic themes. Such a reconstruction …

In The Dark: State V. Alaska Legislative Council And Public-School Funding In The Face Of The Dedicated Funds Clause, Joe Perry Mar 2024

In The Dark: State V. Alaska Legislative Council And Public-School Funding In The Face Of The Dedicated Funds Clause, Joe Perry

Alaska Law Review

In the past several years, Alaska has faced many challenges in its public education system. These challenges gave rise to an intense political debate, significant new legislation, and a protracted battle over the future of funding for public education. Governor Mike Dunleavy and the state legislature publicly clashed over the implementation of H.B. 287, a 2018 state law designed to provide financial stability to ailing schools and curtail teacher layoffs. In 2022, the Supreme Court of Alaska resolved the dispute in favor of the governor and found a contentious piece of state legislation unconstitutional under the states "Dedicated Funds Clause." …

Towards Better Local Governance In Alaska's Unorganized Borough, Jake Sherman Mar 2024

Towards Better Local Governance In Alaska's Unorganized Borough, Jake Sherman

Alaska Law Review

Alaska's unorganized borough is the only unincorporated county-equivalent area in the entire United States, but the Alaska Constitution never envisioned that would be the case. The framers of the Alaska Constitution drafted a revolutionary article on local government that prioritized localism—participation in local government—to further democratic engagement in the state. Recognizing that much of rural Alaska lacked the population and infrastructure to support incorporated and localized self-governance in the 1950s, the framers opted not to automatically incorporate the entire state under various borough governments. Even so, the framers made clear that the state was to play an active role in …

The Influence Of Tile Flow On The Transport-Fate Of Nitrate In The Vadose Zone Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer: A Case Study At The T3 Site In Mclean County, Central Illinois, Benedicta Karl Akrofi Mar 2024

The Influence Of Tile Flow On The Transport-Fate Of Nitrate In The Vadose Zone Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer: A Case Study At The T3 Site In Mclean County, Central Illinois, Benedicta Karl Akrofi

Theses and Dissertations

The Midwest states have highly fertile soils representing one of the world's most intense agricultural production areas. The agricultural lands in the Midwest, including Illinois, are drained using tiles to improve the soil conditions for high productivity. However, the discharge of the tile waters directly into streams short-circuits the soil’s role in nutrient cycling (plant uptake, denitrification, microbial immobilization) and contributes to elevated nitrate as nitrogen (NO3--N) concentrations in surface waters, causing algae blooms which impairs surface waters and degrade water quality. Most NO3--N exports from tile-drained watersheds in the Midwest occur from January to June, corresponding to periods of …

Recreational Use Of Protected Areas: Spatiotemporal Insights From The Wikiloc Mobile App, Jorge Costa, Alberto Gomes, Martin Stokes, Miguel Saraiva

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Managing the rising number of visitors to protected areas (PAs) without compromising their environmental goals is a critical challenge that requires a complete understanding of how and when visitors use these spaces. Georeferenced data from fitness-tracking apps can provide detailed information about the visitor’s spatiotemporal behaviour inside PAs, but its potential is still underexplored. This study uses georeferenced data, from Wikiloc, to analyse the visitors’ spatiotemporal behaviour in Alvão Natural Park, Portugal. Our findings show that: 52% of the visitors’ use is concentrated around the Fisgas de Ermelo Waterfall; photos’ hotspots coincide with the waterfalls and viewpoints facing them; 2% …

Influence Of Tile-Drainage Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations: A Case Study Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Tosin Aminat Abdulsalam Mar 2024

Influence Of Tile-Drainage Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations: A Case Study Of A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Tosin Aminat Abdulsalam

Theses and Dissertations

In the U.S. Midwest, where fertile soils with high water retention are prevalent, the installation of tile drainage networks have become a common practice to drain excess soil water, enhancing plant growth and increasing crop productivity. However, tile drainage networks coupled with the use of inorganic fertilizers have significant implications on water quality, contributing to eutrophication, leading to harmful algal blooms, and resulting in hypoxic conditions in surface water bodies. To mitigate excess nutrient exports to surface water bodies, edge-of-field practices have been introduced. One such practice is the saturated riparian buffer (SRB), which utilizes a diversion system to redirect …

Non-Chinese In Chinese History The Enduring Influence Of "Foreign Barbarians" In Ancient China, Caleb Darger Mar 2024

Non-Chinese In Chinese History The Enduring Influence Of "Foreign Barbarians" In Ancient China, Caleb Darger

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

The modern concept of Chinese Nationality is a rather recent construct. During China's early Republican (1912-27) and Nationalist (1928-49) periods, leaders like Sun Yat-sen and Yuan Shikai embraced the idea of Zhonghua minzu, translated as "Chinese nation" or "Chinese races." The inclusive term helped unify the Han Chinese people and four other major non-Han ethnic groups that comprised most of the Chinese population: The Man (Manchus), the Meng (Mongolians), the Hui (Uighurs and groups of Muslims in northwestern China), and the Zang (Tibetans). The term was later expanded in 1978 after the death of Mao Zedong to include fifty-one …

Salt Marsh Migration Into Coastal Uplands And Application For Conservation In New Hampshire, Grant Mckown, David Burdick Mar 2024

Salt Marsh Migration Into Coastal Uplands And Application For Conservation In New Hampshire, Grant Mckown, David Burdick

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Salt marshes across the East Coast, including New Hampshire, have lost considerable areas of vegetation cover from shoreline erosion and interior pool formation as sea level rise outpaces the marsh’s ability to maintain elevation. Marsh migration, or the inland transgression of halophyte vegetation into upland habitats, is one of the main mechanisms for salt marshes to maintain their areal extent on centennial timescales and recently has been a key strategy discussed by resource managers for shorter term timescales. A literature review was conducted to determine the extent of the research on the topic including biogeochemical drivers, response of the vegetation …

Decoding The Past: Evolutionary History Of North American Deer Mouse Populations On The Gulf Islands, Rachel Ann Berg Mar 2024

Decoding The Past: Evolutionary History Of North American Deer Mouse Populations On The Gulf Islands, Rachel Ann Berg

Theses and Dissertations

Anthropogenic habitat fragmentation is increasing the number of small and isolated organismal populations, and the long-term effects of these recent isolations are not well understood. Small populations are at increased risk of extinction thus it is essential to identify populations that have been isolated over long time periods to use as model systems to study consequences of isolation. Besides understanding genetic consequences, isolated populations may also serve as natural systems to study morphological changes in populations that have independent evolutionary trajectories. Investigating island populations may help in the discovery of long-term isolated populations that may be experiencing morphological changes as …

Nursing Student Attitudes Toward Mental Illness: A Quantitative Quasi-Experimental Study, Todd B. Hastings Mar 2024

Nursing Student Attitudes Toward Mental Illness: A Quantitative Quasi-Experimental Study, Todd B. Hastings

Dissertations

Nursing students often harbor negative stereotypes and feel unknowledgeable and unprepared to work with mentally ill people. In addition, nursing students rarely choose the psychiatric specialty as a career option. A quantitative quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine nursing student feelings about engaging those with behavioral health problems. Over 300 nursing students in eight Bachelor of Science in Nursing professional nursing programs were surveyed on the first and last day of their program's psychiatric mental health nursing course (the independent variable). A valid and reliable survey instrument was used to collect nursing student responses characterizing attitudes, impressions of knowledge and …

Back In The Ring: A Survey Of The Communist Party Of The United States: 1956-1976, Zachary Carlson Mar 2024

Back In The Ring: A Survey Of The Communist Party Of The United States: 1956-1976, Zachary Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

The Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) suffered greatly under McCarthyism and by 1956 was no longer considered a viable political party by contemporary historians. Therefore, contemporary historians ignore the efforts of the CPUSA after this date. Failure to engage with the CPUSA post 1956 ignores their activity and contribution to the political and social landscape of the United States during the New Left, Civil Rights Movement, and Anti-War Movement. The CPUSA remained an influential political party and organizing power during the post-McCarty years. This survey exemplifies the methods used and spaces occupied by the CPUSA that allowed them …

Building Community Support: A Multi-Scalar Archaeological Analysis Of Sewage Infrastructure In Central Illinois, Anastasia Leigh Ervin Mar 2024

Building Community Support: A Multi-Scalar Archaeological Analysis Of Sewage Infrastructure In Central Illinois, Anastasia Leigh Ervin

Theses and Dissertations

In the 1920s and 1930s in Central Illinois, urban areas implemented sewage infrastructure consisting of underground sewers and sanitation plants. These sanitary districts soon became an essential service provided within the community and the established infrastructure has undergone expansion and technological updates in the decades since. I use methods and concepts of landscape archaeology in combination with 1940 Census socio-economic demographics, GIS viewshed and smellshed (buffer) analysis, and visual spatial analysis to examine the case studies of three sanitary districts in Central Illinois: Bloomington-Normal, Urbana-Champaign, and Sangamon County to evaluate how these infrastructures shaped their landscapes, or sewagescapes. Sewagescapes have …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The geo-political and technological competition (geo-technological competition) between China and the United States is the main arena of great power competition in the 21st century, which has impacted the global technology, supply chain, and economic development landscape in unexpected ways. Although this issue has been widely discussed in the academic community, there is a lack of a systematic study of the actions of first-class think tanks in China and the United States. Therefore, this study selects the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the Brookings Institution, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) as the research objects, collects, sorts …

Curricula As Ideology: A Study Of Cultural Representations In Arabic As A Foreign Language (Afl) Textbooks, Zakaria Fahmi Mar 2024

Curricula As Ideology: A Study Of Cultural Representations In Arabic As A Foreign Language (Afl) Textbooks, Zakaria Fahmi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study examines cultural representations in two widely used AFL textbook series, namely Al-Kitaab and Arabiyyat al-Naas. Fundamentally, three main issues motivate this study: (1) the cultural politics of language textbooks underlying the construction and dissemination of cultural knowledge and its prioritization of the latter on grounds of subjectivity, ideology, and power, (2) the politicization of Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) in light of the post 9/11 language advocacy, and (3) the prevailing standard language ideology of al-Arabiya al-fuṣħaa (العربية الفصحى) and the pedagogical challenges posed by Arabic diglossia. The data comprise five textbooks from the aforementioned series, …

Future Of Maritime Autonomy: Cybersecurity, Trust And Mariner's Situational Awareness, J. D. Palbar Misas, R. Hopcraft, K. Tam, K. Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

As technology evolves, the level of automation in the maritime industry also grows. Given the extensive benefits they offer, the industry will continue to develop its digital capabilities in order to improve. One key example of this is the industry currently striving for fully autonomous vessels. Current crew-based maritime operations on board rely on a mixture of automated simplistic processes, human decision-making, and human interventions. The future autonomy suggests the removal of the mariner physically on board. The remote nature of these operations will subject mariners and vessels to new operational risks, such as a potential reduction in Situational Awareness …

Subjugation Of Adivasi Women And The Role Of Ngo Pradan In Holistic Development, Mohosin Mandal, Sahina Khatun

Journal of International Women's Studies

Adivasis are the original inhabitants of India, and their history has been plagued by suffering and deprivation. From the Aryan invasion of 1400 B.C. to the British colonial period, Adivasis have been subjected to domination, displacement, organized loot of resources, and suppression. They are still experiencing forced displacement and other forms of injustice and inequalities in the name of capitalist development. The Indian government took many positive steps to change the condition of Scheduled Tribes (the constitutional term for Adivasi), but despite these governmental actions, no significant changes have been witnessed in their livelihood. A vast majority of the Adivasi …

Journal of International Women's Studies

Adivasis have become visible in debates around indigeneity, identity politics, conversion, development, and displacement, and more recently on climate change. However, gender remains a comparatively marginalized theme and Adivasi women or tribal women remain marginalized subjects. This article explores the broad themes and conceptual frameworks around which Adivasi women have gained maximum visibility in colonial and postcolonial India. It analyzes the trends in available research on Adivasi women and the problems involved. The article underlines the need to widen our research canvas, ask more questions, and consider more layers and complexities in research pursuits.

An Environmental History Of The Armed Occupation Act Of 1842: Empire, Cultivation, And Securing The Southernmost Frontier In The Contiguous United States, Gary Desantis Mar 2024

An Environmental History Of The Armed Occupation Act Of 1842: Empire, Cultivation, And Securing The Southernmost Frontier In The Contiguous United States, Gary Desantis

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Armed Occupation Act of 1842 (AOA) remains important to Florida's environmental history because it brought a stalwart band of white pioneers to take advantage of 200,000 acres of relatively untouched wilderness south of Gainesville. The basic tenants of the Act called for heads of households to bear arms against Seminoles, bestowed 160 acres of land to those who farmed at least five acres as well as constructed a domicile, and so succeeded in attracting new migrants that Florida achieved statehood three years later in 1845. The Act was effective in boosting the population-at least in giving Florida the 60,000 …

The Hunt For Charlie Wright: Race And Environment In Florida's Turpentine Industry, Christopher Calton

Florida Historical Quarterly

On December 2, 1922, a Georgia-bound train was departing from the depot at Perry, Florida, when the crew discovered the body of a young girl lying in the tall grass beside the track. Halting the train, they inspected the body to find that the woman was "brutally beaten with some blunt instrument and her throat cut in such a horrible manner that death must have been instantaneous." Blood pooled around her body, and there were clear signs of a struggle. The crew immediately returned to the depot where they alerted the local authorities.

Channeling The Capital Of Others: How Luxembourg Came To Be Asset Managers’ "Plumber" Of Choice, Samuel Weeks

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

This article analyzes the development and growth of the administrative practices and structures necessary for leading asset-management companies and other firms to create and sell their “product” of choice: investment funds. To investigate this problematic, I turn to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which currently serves as the domicile for over $5 trillion in fund assets. Indeed, since the 1980s, Luxembourg’s “offshore” financial center has become a leader in providing the “plumbing,” to quote an interviewee of mine, for worldwide asset-manager capitalism. On offer in Luxembourg to asset managers are the routine-but-essential tasks such as domiciliation, compliance, calculation of net-asset …

An estimated 6 million children under the age of five in Nigeria (out of nearly 31 million) risk not reaching their full developmental potential. The dearth of context-relevant measures poses a challenge to the planning and implementation of effective interventions. This study assesses the utility of the Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI) in Nigeria. We used the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys to track progress among 3- to 4-year-old children (n = 11,073); 3-year-old, 51%; female, 49%. Using random calibration samples, the results from psychometric tests indicate that while over half of the children were on track in their development based …

Floodplain Restoration And Its Effects On Summer Water Temperature And Macroinvertebrates In Whychus Creek, Oregon (Usa), Wesley N. Noone, Patrick M. Edwards, Yangdong Pan, Colin R. Thorne

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stream restoration is a proposed climate adaptation tool; however, outcomes of floodplain restoration on stream temperature have been debated. Despite a growing number of studies that investigated water temperature in restored streams, few have quantified temperature variations in new habitat types created by restored hydrogeomorphic processes to explore the effects on aquatic macroinvertebrates. We evaluated the hypotheses: (1) restoration increases habitat diversity, (2) habitat diversity increases water temperature variability, and (3) restoration increases the diversity of macroinvertebrate assemblage and temperature associations. In August 2021, we collected environmental data to describe the aquatic habitats, water temperature and quality (continuous and discrete), …

Controlled Release Of Radioactive Water From The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant: Should We Be Concerned?, Maria F. Ferreira, Andrew Turner, Awadhesh N. Jha

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, the decision to release more than 1 million tons of radioactive water into the ocean by the Japanese government, with approval from the IAEA, has divided public and scientific opinion. The discharge began on August 24, 2023, with the premise that, after removal of long-lived radionuclides (i.e., 137Cs and 90Sr), tritium (3H), the primary remaining radionuclide as tritiated water (HTO), will be sufficiently and safely diluted over a 30-year period. (1) Concerns, however, relate to (a) the safety of seafood and its consumers and (b) potential long-term consequences on human and environmental …
