The Burden Of Birth: Racialized Margins Of Care In Washington, D.C., Beya D. Hull Dec 2024

The Burden Of Birth: Racialized Margins Of Care In Washington, D.C., Beya D. Hull

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The United States has shockingly high rates of maternal mortality in which Black women bear a disproportionate burden of pregnancy related deaths. In D.C., the nation's capital, Black women account for 90% of pregnancy associated deaths, despite comprising less than half of the population. This disparity is a result of systemic medical racism, geographical barriers, and a lack of available culturally reverent care. Community-based collectives have emerged to fill in the gaps left by the healthcare system by providing essential services to underserved communities, specifically Black women. These organizations have proven the potential of ‘non-traditional’ healthcare models to change the …

Constructing The Communal Body: Literary Topographies Of Underclass And Working-Class Neighborhoods In Modern Osaka (1933-1960), Ran Wei Dec 2024

Constructing The Communal Body: Literary Topographies Of Underclass And Working-Class Neighborhoods In Modern Osaka (1933-1960), Ran Wei

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

When literary scholars examine narratives about Osaka, they have largely focused on the relationship between Osaka and Tokyo or the representations of Osaka in the national imagination. The approach tends to neglect the role that minority groups play in creating Osaka as a city of local cosmopolitanism. Centering on how Osaka writers have represented four underclass and working-class neighborhoods in the city, this dissertation scrutinizes how the narratives complicate the images of Osaka constructed by the national government and challenge the official narrative of a homogeneous Japan. Despite Osaka’s changing position within the nation-state, its importance as a home for …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

As we increasingly understand the impact that land management intensification has on local and global climate, the call for nature-based solutions (NbS) in agroecosystems has expanded. Moreover, the pressing need to determine when and where NbS should be used raises challenges to socioecological data integration as we overcome spatiotemporal resolutions. Natural and working lands is an effort promoting NbS, particularly emissions reduction and carbon stock maintenance in forests. To overcome the spatiotemporal limitation, we integrated life cycle assessments (LCA), an ecological carbon stock model, and a land cover land use change model to synthesize rates of global warming potential (GWP) …

Perceptions Of University Staff Member Organizational Belonging In Higher Education: A Quantitative Analysis, Amanda Mcknight Baine

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine organizational belonging among staff members working in higher education. While staff members are vital to the operations, maintenance and overall organizational function of higher education institutions, this group represents a seldom studied population. Given their essential role and the impact of the pandemic on work life perspectives, it is important to recognize the experiences of staff members and seek to understand current perceptions of organizational belonging with implications from retention to work quality. To measure organizational belonging, a modified survey developed by Blau et al. (2023) was used, looking at 4 scale …

Theses and Dissertations

In 2019, the author re-presented two 14C dates for Tell el-Hesi in the northern Negev desert of modern-day Israel that were originally published in 2006 by Anderson. Here, 10 additional samples out of the total recovered corpus by The Joint Archaeological Expedition to Tell el-Hesi in 1979 from the EB III occupation in Field VI, were 14C tested to refine further the EB III absolute dates for the site. The samples come from two main contexts along the EB III city wall, representing both the interior occupational debris and an ash dump feature found along the exterior of the city …

To achieve this objective, I have undertaken a comprehensive examination and synthesis of the historical background pertaining to State Lakes and conducted an analysis of pertinent data regarding lake characteristics such as the physical and chemical attributes of the lakes, the features of …

Factors Influencing Quality Of Citizen Science-Collected Litter Data And The Retention Of Recruited Citizen Scientists, Jessi Alexandria James-Barry Dec 2024

Factors Influencing Quality Of Citizen Science-Collected Litter Data And The Retention Of Recruited Citizen Scientists, Jessi Alexandria James-Barry

Theses and Dissertations

There are many benefits to using citizen science in scientific research, however, there are several perceived limitations. One being that citizen science data are often viewed as inferior or unusable by the broader science community. A primary concern to the usability and accuracy of this data depends on the level of training a participant receives. Another limitation is the recruitment and retention of volunteers participating in the data collection process. To further understand how training level affects the accuracy of citizen science and how demographics may influence participation, this study evaluated 73 volunteers trained in two different marine debris data …

Greener On The Other Side: Latinx Migrants’ Perspectives On The Importance Of Climate Change On Their Decisions To Relocate To Mississippi, Maria Claire Regalado Schrupp Dec 2024

Greener On The Other Side: Latinx Migrants’ Perspectives On The Importance Of Climate Change On Their Decisions To Relocate To Mississippi, Maria Claire Regalado Schrupp

Theses and Dissertations

As climate change continues to progress and impact people around the world, its impact on human migration has become a topic of increasing study and discussion. Debates over climate migration terminology and the extent to which it is a useful area of study have emerged in recent years. Yet, the opinions of migrants themselves are often missing from these conversations. Using mixed methods, this study uncovers the extent to which migrants from Latin America view climate change as relevant to their own migrations and, which factors, if not climate change, are most prevalent in inducing international migration to the United …

Beyond The Classroom: Leveraging P-12 Education Brand Equity To Cultivate Community Capitals And Drive Economic Growth In Rural Mississippi, Patrick Braden Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the relationship between education brand equity and community-economic development in rural Mississippi as a result of a consumer-oriented approach to education and manifested through the modern school choice movement. A survey of public school superintendents (n=28) found a statistically positive correlation, suggesting that a strong school brand leads to increased community-economic development. The Community Capitals Framework suggests this connection is due to interconnected capitals like human and social capital but helps other capitals rise as well. Additionally, superintendents overwhelmingly agreed collaboration between education and community-economic development is essential. The research also examined perceptions of school choice. Superintendents’responses …

Evaluation Of The Physical And Mechanical Properties Of Hardwoods And Softwood Cross Laminated Timber, Richard Olakunle Omotayo Dec 2024

Evaluation Of The Physical And Mechanical Properties Of Hardwoods And Softwood Cross Laminated Timber, Richard Olakunle Omotayo

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is focused on the evaluation of cross laminated timber made from southern pine lumber and low-grade hardwood species (which included red oak, sweetgum, and yellow poplar) growing in the southeastern part of the United States. The properties of interest were density, modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and dynamic modulus of elasticity (dMOE). Mechanical testing using static bending technique was used to determine MOE and MOR and non-destructive technique (NDT) was used to predict dMOE. The results from mechanical testing showed that over 98% of low-grade hardwood CLT samples exceeded 8300 MPa. This proved the suitability …

Ecological Niches Applied To Socioeconomic Phenomena: The Case Of The Colombian Internal Conflict, Alexander Alegría, Laura Jiménez, Jhon Jairo Alvarado-Quintero

Peace and Conflict Studies

Recent studies of the Colombian conflict have shown that struggle for resource accumulation and territorial control, in a very competitive and violent environment in which the illegal armed groups are involved, is crucial to their survival and development. Here, we applied a highly successful methodology from ecology (Ecological Niche Modelling) to the problem of identifying the ideal socioeconomic conditions for the presence of a Colombian illegal armed group, named the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). We analyzed some determining factors of FARC´s presence and permanence within the Colombian territory that reflect aspects of the socioeconomic dynamics and productive capacity …

Aboard The Giant Clam: Ramon Muzones's Maritime Historicization Of The Nation, Winton Lou G. Ynion

Kritika Kultura

Philippine literature scholarship is currently interested in decentering the discourse of nation-building from the capital to the periphery, but least often is attention given to the very geography that makes these communities marginalized. Habitually, multiculturalism and multilingualism have been convenient explanations for why it is difficult for the Philippines to come up with a “national literature” and a paradigm for imagining a nation. This essay centers on this neglected aspect, casting a novel written by a marginalized author in a vernacular language – the Margosatubig (1946) by Ramon Muzones. Three prime objectives guided the navigation of this paper: (1) to …

"Pedagogic Invasion": The Thomasites In Occupied Philippines, Dinah Roma-Sianturi Dec 2024

"Pedagogic Invasion": The Thomasites In Occupied Philippines, Dinah Roma-Sianturi

Kritika Kultura

The early education of the Philippines by American voluntary teachers (the Thomasites) is often hailed as a laudatory project. However, education can be a deceptive gift. The ethnographic writings of the Thomasite teachers, like Mary Fee’s A Woman’s Impressions of the Philippines, reveal that these well-meaning American teachers had their own colonial opinion of their Filipino students. Perhaps unwittingly, the Thomasite teachers were still part of the American colonial education policy. Most especially, the memoir writings reveal a perception of Filipino males as effeminate and childlike, an opinion that did much to legitimize the American colonial mandate.

The Yafo (Jaffa) Harbor: The Course Of The Seawalls During The Crusader And Ottoman Periods And Remains Of The Wharf From The Days Of The British Mandate (Hebrew; English Summary), Elie Haddad, Alexander Glick

'Atiqot

Salvage excavations in the Yafo harbor area uncovered five strata (V–I), dating from the Byzantine period to the modern era. A short section of the Byzantine-period seawall and sections of the Crusader seawall were exposed, as well as four phases of the Ottoman-period harbor, including wharfs, a customs house and a seawall. At the end of the Ottoman and the beginning of the Mandate periods, a maritime citadel and a system of wide and narrow stairs were constructed. The finds included pottery, glass vessels, metal objects and seashells. The course of the seawalls in the Yafo harbor moved westward over …

A Boundary Stone From Kafr Nafaḥ And The Preservation Of Ancient Place Names In The Northern And Central Golan Heights, Danny Syon, Chaim Ben David Dec 2024

A Boundary Stone From Kafr Nafaḥ And The Preservation Of Ancient Place Names In The Northern And Central Golan Heights, Danny Syon, Chaim Ben David

'Atiqot

A Roman imperial boundary stone, erected under Diocletian in c. 300 CE, was reused as a covering stone of a fourth-century CE grave. It bears the Greek names of the villages Ramathana and Kapharnapha, identified as the late Ottoman villages Ramtaniyye and Kafr Nafaḥ. This is the first instance where ancient names were preserved by the modern ones in the central Golan Heights, overturning previous assumptions in this regard. Archaeological evidence from both sites confirms their existence in the Roman and Byzantine periods. It seems that the preservation of the name of Kafr Nafaḥ is due to its location along …

Lazarin, Burt, Caitlin Omey

Bronx Jewish History Project

Summarized by Avi Frank

Burt Lazarin was born in 1944 and grew up in the Bronx in the Highbridge and Williamsbridge neighborhoods. His family came from Eastern European Jewish backgrounds, with his father’s side immigrating from Lithuania and his mother’s from a region that later became part of Belarus. Lazarin describes growing up in a working to lower-middle-class household, first in a small apartment in Highbridge and later, in 1952, moving to a larger two-family home in Williamsbridge with his parents, brothers, and extended family. Although not religious, Lazarin recalls a strong sense of Jewish identity shaped by family traditions, …

A Methodological Framework For The Archaeology Of Conflicts In The Southern Levant, And The Battle Of Hattin (July 3–4, 1187), Rafael Y. Lewis Dec 2024

A Methodological Framework For The Archaeology Of Conflicts In The Southern Levant, And The Battle Of Hattin (July 3–4, 1187), Rafael Y. Lewis

'Atiqot

This article presents a research framework for the Archaeology of Conflicts/Battlefield Archaeology. This work was motivated by the methodological challenge posed by the very attempt to study material evidence of events of short duration in the landscape. Such events occurred outside the boundaries of conventional archaeological sites, in the landscape, which is generally subject to more frequent changes. The theoretical model is presented through an examination of the Battle of Hattin, a decisive event that took place on July 3–4, 1187, within the days of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem (1099–1291). This theoretical construct can be applied to the study …

Power And Control In Crusader Acre (‘Akko): The Fortifications Of The Genoese Quarter, Edna J. Stern, Eliezer Stern, Fabrizio Benente

'Atiqot

An impressive fortification system on the northern border of the Genoese Quarter at Crusader-period Acre was discovered, comprising a defensive wall built of bossed ashlars and incorporating arrow slits, a fortified gate leading to the quarter through a vaulted passageway and a projecting tower with two levels of arrow slits. The gate and parts of the passageway were blocked, apparently during the Crusader period, as a consequence of the Saint Sabas War. This war broke out following a dispute between Venice and Genoa over ownership of a monastery located on the border between their quarters, near the port, which was …

The Principia Of The Sixth Legion At Legio/Caparcotani: Ground Penetrating Radar And Excavations In A Legionary Base, Yotam Tepper, Matthew J. Adams, Eileen Ernenwein

'Atiqot

The legionary base at Legio (Legion II Trajana and Legion VI Ferrata) is the first full-scale legionary base of the Principate excavated in the Eastern Empire. The 2015–2019 excavation seasons of the Jezreel Valley Regional Project focused on the headquarters compound, the principia. While many components of the compound are typical of those of permanent legionary bases throughout the Empire, several unique features of the principia at Legio offer new research avenues concerning the function of these buildings within the Roman army administrative system and community life. This paper summarizes the results of the 2015–2019 seasons of excavation and remote …
