The Current Rural Sign Language Interpreter Landscape: Examining The Fields' Collective Accountability, Kelly L. Decker, Schawn M. Hardesty Sep 2024

The Current Rural Sign Language Interpreter Landscape: Examining The Fields' Collective Accountability, Kelly L. Decker, Schawn M. Hardesty

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Historically overlooked by training entities and professional organizations, rural interpreters are too often unable to attain the necessary and appropriately sequenced training that recognizes existing competencies, accumulates academic credentials, or acquires professional certification (Shaffer, 2013; Trimble, 2014). As educators and practitioners cultivating this vital interpreting workforce demographic, we have contributed to these gaps and are accountable. The Improving Rural Interpreter Skills (IRIS) Project is a $2.1M, five-year interpreter training grant project awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration to the University of Northern Colorado's (UNC) American Sign Language and Interpreting Studies (ASLIS) department, that aims to uncover …

塑造"中國" : 成康大分封與成周王畿區的空間整合, Xianchuang Ye Sep 2024

塑造"中國" : 成康大分封與成周王畿區的空間整合, Xianchuang Ye

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

"Under the vast heaven, all is the king's land" a line from The Book of Songs "Beishan" has often been interpreted as an expression of the Western Zhou Dynasty's ideal political vision. However, this phrase more accurately reflects the Zhou people's ambition for great unification. To achieve this political goal, the promotion of the feudal enfeoffment system to restructure the new "center-periphery" geographical pattern was essential. The core ruling area of the Western Zhou was the region described in The Book of Han "Geography Records" as "Luoyi and Zongzhou's joint royal domain." Unlike the formation of the western Zongzhou …

Bodies That Traverse: Colonial Fantasies Of Oriental Incorporations In Late Medieval England, Soojung Choe Sep 2024

Bodies That Traverse: Colonial Fantasies Of Oriental Incorporations In Late Medieval England, Soojung Choe

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“Bodies that Traverse: Colonial Fantasies of Oriental Incorporations in Late Medieval England” shows how a picture of a proto-colonialist England arises from popular romances of the period, particularly those featuring the Crusades and the “Orient,” or the fictional Near East, as its central narrative locus. While the historical Crusades to the Holy Land mainly took place between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, English fictional writing on the Crusades flourished in the “post-crusade” period of 1200–1450. My project argues that the Orient in these writings, especially popular vernacular romances, serves as a colonial ‘contact zone,’ a fetishized site for England to …

Essays In Health Economics And Applied Econometrics: Assessing Recreational Marijuana Laws, Dragos Ailoae Sep 2024

Essays In Health Economics And Applied Econometrics: Assessing Recreational Marijuana Laws, Dragos Ailoae

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores the diffusion and impacts of state recreational marijuana laws (RML). Chapter 1 examines factors driving state adoption and spread of RML, finding that states with citizen ballot initiatives, expansive legislative capacities, and higher fiscal stress are more likely to enact RML. Ideological proximity, rather than geography, drives policy diffusion, with learning from early adopters likely serving as a key mechanism in the process. Chapter 2 assesses first-order effects of RML on marijuana consumption and drug policing using various econometric methods. Results suggest amplification bias in difference-in-differences point estimates due to an endogenous policy variable. This has economic …

Consistent Seasonal Hydrography From Moorings At Northwest Greenland Glacier Fronts, Marie J. Zahn, Kristin L. Laidre, Malene Simon, Kathleen M. Stafford, Michael Wood, Josh K. Willis, Elizabeth M. Phillips, Ian Fenty

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Greenland's marine-terminating glaciers connect the ice sheet to the ocean and provide a critical boundary where heat, freshwater, and nutrient exchanges take place. Buoyant freshwater runoff from inland ice sheet melt is discharged at the base of marine-terminating glaciers, forming vigorous upwelling plumes. It is understood that subglacial plumes modify waters near glacier fronts and increase submarine glacier melt by entraining warm ambient waters at depth. However, ocean observations along Greenland's coastal margins remain biased toward summer months which limits accurate estimation of ocean forcing on glacier retreat and acceleration. Here, we fill a key observational gap in northwest Greenland …

American anthropology is engaged in significant self-reckonings that call for big changes to how anthropology is practiced. These include (1) recognizing and taking seriously the demands to decolonize the ways research is done, (2) addressing precarious employment in academic anthropology, and (3) creating a discipline better positioned to respond to urgent societal needs. A central role for ethnographic methods training is a thread that runs through each of these three reckonings. This article, written by a team of cultural, biocultural, and linguistic anthropologists, outlines key connections between ethnographic methods training and the challenges facing anthropology. We draw on insights from …

Embodied Energy Injustice And The Political Ecology Of Solar Power, Dustin Mulvaney Sep 2024

Embodied Energy Injustice And The Political Ecology Of Solar Power, Dustin Mulvaney

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Solar energy is poised to become a major source of electricity around the world. As deployment rises to terawatts levels, these industries will drive demand for specific materials, natural resources, labor, and lands with solar energy resources reconfiguring socio-ecological relations. Global change from the development of solar power commodity chains includes increased demand for minerals and metals, new places for metallurgy and smelting, shifting workforce flows, occupational safety challenges from extractive industries to semiconductor manufacturing fabs. These new geographies of production could result in increased emissions and effluents from specialty chemical industries, conservation and agricultural land use change, and questions …

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

As the global economy transitions to a just, low-emissions, climate-resilient, and nature-positive future, we can expect every sector to transform. However, systemic transformation requires strategic transition planning, effective coordination, and communication across the economy. To facilitate this, governments can play a decisive role by managing change and setting incentives and constraints for private actors. Similarly, private sector actors can enhance their corporate strategies and financing decisions to support this transition. Transition plans serve as a roadmap to transformation by outlining a strategic vision and identifying capital needs, external factors, and dependencies.

Utilization Of Geospatial Distribution In The Measurement Of Study Cohort Representativeness., Keith Feldman, Natalie J. Kane, Stacey Daniels-Young, Bruce Reed, Jessica Welch, Lauren Fitzpatrick, Mark A. Hoffman, Andrea Bradley-Ewing, Elin Grundberg

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

OBJECTIVE: The ability to apply results from a study to a broader population remains a primary objective in translational science. Distinct from intrinsic elements of scientific rigor, the extrinsic concept of generalization requires there be alignment between a study cohort and population in which results are expected to be applied. Widespread efforts have been made to quantify representativeness of study cohorts. These techniques, however, often consider the study and target cohorts as monolithic collections that can be directly compared. Overlooking known impacts to health from socio-demographic and environmental factors tied to individual's geographical location, and potentially obfuscating misalignment in underrepresented …

Temperature affects the timing of the transformation of amorphous silica (opal-A) into crystalline (opal-CT) exponentially. Thus, in hot subseafloor environments opal-A is expected to convert into opal-CT at relatively shallow burial depths, where in situ temperatures do not exceed ∼56 °C, as it has been previously observed at various deep-sea sites and in onshore rock outcrops as well as assessed during lab experiments. The response of biosilica (biogenic opal-A) diagenesis to steep geothermal gradients (∼224–529 °C/km) at extremely high sedimentation rates (∼1 m/kyr) was examined in cores from off-axis boreholes drilled by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 385 …

Approximation Of Ice Phenology Of Maine Lakes Using Aqua Modis Surface Temperature Data, Sophia K. Skoglund, Abdou Rachid Bah, Hamidreza Norouzi, Kathleen C. Weathers, Holly Ewing, Bethel G. Steele, Linda C. Bacon Sep 2024

Approximation Of Ice Phenology Of Maine Lakes Using Aqua Modis Surface Temperature Data, Sophia K. Skoglund, Abdou Rachid Bah, Hamidreza Norouzi, Kathleen C. Weathers, Holly Ewing, Bethel G. Steele, Linda C. Bacon

All Faculty Scholarship

Studies of lake ice phenology have historically relied on limited in situ data. Relatively few observations exist for ice out and fewer still for ice in, both of which are necessary to determine the temporal extent of ice cover. Satellite data provide an opportunity to better document patterns of ice phenology across landscapes and relate them to the climatological drivers behind changing ice phenology. We developed a model, the Cumulative Sum Method (CSM), that uses daytime and nighttime surface temperature observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on board the Earth-observing Aqua satellite to approximate ice in (the …

Gender Conscious Labor Environmentalism, Chaumtoli Huq Sep 2024

Gender Conscious Labor Environmentalism, Chaumtoli Huq

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Drawing primarily from the internationally recognized human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, ("right to a healthy environment") as well as related international environmental and economic human rights laws, this Article makes three critical moves towards theorizing a gender conscious approach to labor environmentalism. First, this Article demonstrates through four cases studies from Bangladesh, that global and national labor movements can effectively address the root causes of labor rights violations, specifically around health and safety by deploying and mobilizing around the recently passed international right to a healthy environment. Second, the right to a healthy environment offers a …

Beyond Medicaid Expansion: Addressing The Sexual And Reproductive Health Crisis In Rural Appalachia, Cheyenne Peters

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

In addition to negatively impacting abortion access, the decision

in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has forced many

clinics in rural Appalachia that previously provided access to holistic

sexual and reproductive health services, such as contraception

management, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, and preventative

cancer screening, to close their doors entirely. This has left

many Appalachians living in rural communities with no option for

accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, many people

were never able to access the care even before the recent provider

shortage due to a lack of adequate insurance coverage. This

article explores how Medicaid expansion …
