Are Economic Gender Differences The Same Everywhere? Cross-Societal Comparisons In The Early 21st Century, Joyce P. Jacobsen
Are Economic Gender Differences The Same Everywhere? Cross-Societal Comparisons In The Early 21st Century, Joyce P. Jacobsen
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
Are gender differences in economic outcomes the same everywhere? Using the most recent available data (generally from the 2021–2023 period), I consider the patterns for these gender differences and provide an annotated list of statistical sources for students and researchers to use in exploring these differences. Overall, women still work less than men in paid work, work more than men in unpaid household work, and make less than men; however, these patterns have converged somewhat, with some narrowing of work and pay gaps relative to the last part of the 20th century, and with women rapidly closing the educational-attainment gap …

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Among World’S Bay Areas: How To Build An International Science And Technology Innovation Center That Leads Country To Overcome Middle Technology Trap, Yongnian Zheng, Dongni He
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
From the perspective of the global economic and technological landscape, the bay area is not just a concept of geographical space, some world-class bay areas have become or are becoming scientific and technological innovation hubs and economic hubs with global influence, leading the country as a whole in the direction and process of overcoming the middle technological trap. If a region wants to build an international science and technology innovation center that can lead the country to overcome the middle technology trap, it needs three basic elements of basic research, application transformation, and financial support. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay …

Drawing on the essence of global science and technology innovation (STI) centers, this study evaluates the level of science and technology innovation of 140 cities worldwide by constructing a five forces assessment model of global STI centers, which includes 33 indicators in 5 dimensions. The analysis reveals a significant tripartite pattern of development in global STI centers across Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. However, divergent patterns emerge in the development of these centers across different regions. Notably, global STI centers in various regions follow distinct development trajectories. At the national level, the United States and China lead the …

Inorganic Phosphorus Availability And Mobility In A Manufactured Soil, H Kate Schofield, Alan D Tappin, Tim R Pettitt, Gavyn K Rollinson, Mark F Fitzsimons
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Manufactured soils, created by combining various organic and inorganic waste materials and byproducts, may be tailored to specific applications, providing an alternative to the extraction of natural soils. It is important for them to be capable of supporting plant growth without the need for significant management or fertiliser applications, the over-application of which can have adverse environmental effects. We examined the dynamics of phosphorus (P) transformations within a manufactured soil and the implications for nutrient cycling. A freshly prepared manufactured soil (32.5 % composted green waste, 32.5 % composted bark, 25 % horticultural grit, and 10 % lignite clay) was …

Accurately documenting where and when firearms are discharged is a critical first step in gun violence prevention. Many cities rely on police calls for service as their primary source for this information. Recent studies find, however, that citizens underreport gunshots. This has led some communities to invest in gunshot detection technology (GDT) as an alternative data source. GDT remains an expensive and often controversial solution with limited evidence for long-term benefits. This underscores the need for additional research on third-party reporting of gunshots. The current study, conducted in Portland Oregon, surveyed 1,240 residents in 23 neighborhoods with above-average firearm discharges. …

Since 2017, twelve agents have been approved for the treatment of AML subsets: the BCL2 inhibitor venetoclax; the CD33 antibody drug conjugate gemtuzumab ozogamicin; three FLT3 inhibitors (midostaurin, gilteritinib, quizartinib); three IDH inhibitors (ivosidenib and olutasidenib targeting IDH1 mutations; enasidenib targeting IDH2 mutations); two oral hypomethylating agents (oral poorly absorbable azacitidine; fully absorbable decitabine-cedazuridine [latter approved as an alternative to parenteral hypomethylating agents in myelodysplastic syndrome and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia but commonly used in …
From Enemies To Friends: German Prisoners-Of-War In Michigan During World War Ii, Abigail J. Runk
From Enemies To Friends: German Prisoners-Of-War In Michigan During World War Ii, Abigail J. Runk
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
During World War II, the United States government created a program, with the assistance of other Allied forces to house, care, and feed foreign Axis troops in the United States. Sent on Liberty ships to American shores, approximately 425,000 German prisoners arrived between 1943 and 1945. Stationed in camps across the country, these prisoners interacted with the citizenry and directly challenged their ideology.
For prisoners sent to Michigan, the citizens willfully violated War Department guidelines concerning prisoner treatment. The violations were not inhumane. Rather, the disobedience came from being too friendly, supplying prisoners with food, conversation and clothing, which was …
Shine A Light Into The Darkness: Illuminating The Battles Fought By Civil War Prisoners Of War, Marybeth Allison
Shine A Light Into The Darkness: Illuminating The Battles Fought By Civil War Prisoners Of War, Marybeth Allison
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Four hundred thousand Union and Confederate soldiers found themselves imprisoned by the enemy during the American Civil War. Of that number, over fifty-six thousand captives died in the prison camps while their comrades endured unspeakable conditions. The amount of misery and suffering inside these prisons is undeniable, and the history of Civil War prisons encompasses a dark chapter in American history. Much scholarship exists on the prisons and the conditions of the prisons; however, this work focuses on the prisoners’ experiences in their own words. Prisoners continued fighting battles, and most of all, they battled to find light in the …

Economic Geography And The Unequal Development Of Regions By Jean-Claude Prager And Jacques-François Thisse., Anne M. Meltzer
Economic Geography And The Unequal Development Of Regions By Jean-Claude Prager And Jacques-François Thisse., Anne M. Meltzer
The Geographical Bulletin
Economic Geography and the Unequal Development of Regions seeks to discuss the major economic reasons for the stratification and variation of the spatial distribution of wealth. The role of cities and agglomerations are emphasized as vectors of economic development. The authors argue that the recent dropoff of the average global cost of transportation and communication is a main reason why economic development has been able to spread around the world to previously underdeveloped regions. Another recurring theme of this book is that, when looking at uneven development broadly, there is tremendous variation between regions. Therefore, there can be no blanket …
Sky-View Factor Estimation: A Case Study Of Athens, Georgia, Neil Debbage
Sky-View Factor Estimation: A Case Study Of Athens, Georgia, Neil Debbage
The Geographical Bulletin
A better understanding of the urban heat island (UHI) effect can be facilitated by accurately measuring urban geometry. One commonly utilized approach is to calculate the sky-view factor (SVF), which represents the proportion of the sky visible from a given location. The overall purpose of this study is to assess the spatial distribution of SVF values for various land use classes in Athens, GA. Since fish-eye lens imagery can effectively capture the complex nature of the urban canyon, I used a simplistic photographic methodology. I took fish-eye photographs within four land use classes (downtown, commercial, residential and rural/open space) and …
Using Music To Learn Geomorphology: An Undergraduate Experience, Casey D. Allen, Tyler J. Thompson, Matthew T. Hansen
Using Music To Learn Geomorphology: An Undergraduate Experience, Casey D. Allen, Tyler J. Thompson, Matthew T. Hansen
The Geographical Bulletin
As an alternative to traditional upper-level physical geography pedagogy (labs, quizzes, tests, papers, and occasional field exercises), this article outlines and analyzes a 10-week large-group research endeavor conceived and executed by undergraduates where they explored aspects of project construction, methods, analyses, and group dynamics. These experiences are then critiqued from both instructor- and student-based perspectives. We suggest that pedagogies linking physical geography and traditional humanities disciplines should not be overlooked, especially in physical geography-based courses, as they can expose students to high-level thinking skills such as: not limiting research projects to quantitative observations in a natural setting; implementing a student-friendly …
Gated Communities: Institutionalizing Social Stratification, L. Joe Morgan
Gated Communities: Institutionalizing Social Stratification, L. Joe Morgan
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper argues that an increase in gated and separated communities is being perpetuated by social structure and de facto government policies. A review of the contemporary literature indicates the development of “gated communities” has become more pronounced in recent years. This paper demonstrates that the processes of social separation and stratification playing themselves out in these communities result from the extant structure of society at large. “Pro-growth” policies and pushes to preserve property values, both rooted in class differentiation, have become a new mechanism promoting segregation, and have been employed by governments, developers, police, and public policy makers. This …
Nonpoint Source Pollution Risk Mapping For Alabama’S Big Creek Lake, Marco Allain, Jason Jones
Nonpoint Source Pollution Risk Mapping For Alabama’S Big Creek Lake, Marco Allain, Jason Jones
The Geographical Bulletin
Big Creek Lake is the primary water supply for Mobile, Alabama. Management of the watershed is important because nonpoint source (NPS) pollution can introduce contaminants into the lake. After the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) expressed a need for a land suitability assessment to aid in mitigating NPS pollution in the watershed, we worked to assist them in mapping potential sources of NPS pollution there. First, we created a system for rating the relative contributions of various land cover and soil types to NPS pollution in the watershed. Then, we utilized land use/land cover information generated from ASTER …
