The Effect Of Gerrymandering On State Social Policy, Gary D. Brinker Sep 2024

The Effect Of Gerrymandering On State Social Policy, Gary D. Brinker

Sociology Faculty Publications

Partisan bias occurs when one party gets something the other party does not. If a given district map results in one party gleaning a higher proportion of the legislative seats than the proportion of votes cast for that party, since this effect is only possible for one party, then partisan bias has occurred. It can be strategically produced via gerrymandering and is thought by many to circumvent the basic principles of democracy. This study uses recent state election results to compute a measure of partisan bias, as well as secondary data measuring the levels of five state social policies, to …

Impacts Of Climate Change In The United States, Nathan T. Thompson Sep 2024

Impacts Of Climate Change In The United States, Nathan T. Thompson

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Climate change, a shift in long-term climate patterns primarily driven by anthropogenic factors, poses a super wicked problem impacting every sector and region globally, including the United States. This paper explores the scientific basis of climate change, its contributing factors, and the myriad consequences on terrestrial and aquatic systems, as well as mental health. Notably, the emission of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels and agricultural activities is the primary cause, exacerbated by ideological division and psychological distance. The U.S. has seen some progress with a 7% decrease in emissions over the past 30 years and a growing shift toward renewable …

Effects Of Gerrymandering On State Social Policy, Gary D. Brinker

eJournal of Public Affairs

Partisan Bias occurs when an election results in a party gleaning a significantly different proportion of legislative seats than the proportion of votes cast for that party. It can be strategically produced via gerrymandering and is thought by many to threaten the basic principles of democracy. This research uses the 2022 state election results to compute statewide measures of Partisan Bias, then analyzes the correlation with controversial state social policies. Results showed that the redistricting method used and the percent of the party’s legislators were related to Partisan Bias. Analysis also showed that Partisan Bias explains significant levels of variance …

College Students As Participants In Our Democracy: Models For Engagement, Suzanne E. Walker-Pacheco, Otto Brown, Sarah Nash, Seth Andersen, Allison Rank Sep 2024

College Students As Participants In Our Democracy: Models For Engagement, Suzanne E. Walker-Pacheco, Otto Brown, Sarah Nash, Seth Andersen, Allison Rank

eJournal of Public Affairs

Low rates of voter engagement characteristic of the college-age demographic are determined by a host of factors. These factors vary according to geography, demographic variables, and individual inclinations. Those who strive to strengthen our democracy through increasing access to our political system confront many challenges, and there exists no “one-size-fits-all” approach. College campuses, where young voters obviously congregate in large numbers, provide a primary access point for democratic engagement efforts. Institutions of higher education are compelled to respond to the federal mandate put forth by the Higher Education Act to provide information on voter registration. Anecdotal information suggests a greatly …

The Time Is Now, The Time Is Always: Moving Civics From The Classroom To The Campus, Amanda O. Maher, Brigid Beaubien Sep 2024

The Time Is Now, The Time Is Always: Moving Civics From The Classroom To The Campus, Amanda O. Maher, Brigid Beaubien

eJournal of Public Affairs

The time could not be more urgent, and university faculty and leaders must act and reclaim their responsibility for civic preparation. In the face of enrolment decline, an emphasis on student credit hours, and a history of siloed tunnel vision, action seems impossible in a climate that resists the core mission of higher education. In this article, authors—faculty from two teacher preparation departments—share their journey that started as state-mandated program revision to a campus-wide civic agenda. They argue for the integration of civics teaching in disciplinary courses and share classroom teaching ideas that cultivate civic identity and virtues. Feeling empowered, …

An Introduction To The Geography Of Tourism By Velvet Nelson, William C. Terry Sep 2024

An Introduction To The Geography Of Tourism By Velvet Nelson, William C. Terry

The Geographical Bulletin

Geographers specializing in the study of tourism have long complained about the marginalization of the sub-discipline within the wider scope of geography. Those of us who teach tourism geography recognize tourism as an inherently geographical topic ripe for critical investigation in classrooms. Yet despite the obvious appeal, there have been few texts that attempt a comprehensive overview of tourism geography and none geared directly at an undergraduate audience while also striking the right tone and level of engagement required to fulfill the task. I have personally heretofore eschewed the use of textbooks in teaching tourism geography in part because I …

Improved Monitoring Of Forest Disturbance And Succession Using An Optimized Satellite Image Index, Matthew Klotzbach, Jonathan Thayn Sep 2024

Improved Monitoring Of Forest Disturbance And Succession Using An Optimized Satellite Image Index, Matthew Klotzbach, Jonathan Thayn

The Geographical Bulletin

Landscape- to continental-scale studies of forest disturbance and recovery typically rely on satellite image-based indices of vegetation condition. A recently proposed disturbance index that accentuates patches of disturbed forest has been used to detect fire and insect defoliation scars, but until now it has not been used to assess recovery over time. We used a weighted version of the index to emphasize canopy differences caused by fire while minimizing other differences that may exist in the imagery to monitor succession following the 1988 fires in Yellowstone National Park. Spectral estimates of moisture levels were the most important difference between burned …

Championing The City Motto: An Analysis Of Edmonton’S Un/Official Slogan, Nathan Bunio, Elvin Wyly

The Geographical Bulletin

This article examines urban slogans using a case study of Edmonton’s unofficial motto; “City of Champions.” We will be exploring the decision-making process regarding the city slogan, specifically who creates and adopts a city slogan, and what the relationship is between a city’s slogan and its residents. The analysis focuses on events in 2003, when the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation suggested creating a new slogan for the City, prompting a debate over whether to keep or discard the old slogan: “City of Champions.” We carried out a historical case study, using newspaper articles, blogs, and city documents, to gauge public …

Short-Term Associations Between Accumulated Rainfall And Atmospheric Moisture During Landfall Of Three Atlantic Hurricanes, Peng Jia, Andrew Joyner, Yilun Sun Sep 2024

Short-Term Associations Between Accumulated Rainfall And Atmospheric Moisture During Landfall Of Three Atlantic Hurricanes, Peng Jia, Andrew Joyner, Yilun Sun

The Geographical Bulletin

Most hurricane-related deaths are caused by flooding and, as a result, accurate forecasting of rainfall can have a profound impact on reducing loss of life as well as property damages resulting from hurricanes. Quantitative relationships between atmospheric moisture and rainfall have been examined during the landfall of three Atlantic hurricanes in the study, with Geographic Information System and high temporal resolution remote sensing data used and time lags between atmospheric moisture and rainfall taken into account. Results show that 1) atmospheric moisture and rainfall-related variables can be accurately gauged by satellite at any given place and provide approximate estimations for …

Assessing Land Use Changes Due To Natural Gas Drilling Operations In The Marcellus Shale In Bradford County, Pa, Claire A. Jantz, Hannah K. Kubach, Jacob R. Ward, Shawn Wiley, Dana Heston

The Geographical Bulletin

Extraction of natural gas from the Marcellus Shale formation began in the mid-2000s, and well pads and their associated infrastructure are now prominent fixtures throughout the Appalachian region. However, there is currently little research available to provide insight into its implications for land use and land cover change. In this case study of Bradford County, Pennsylvania, we used high-resolution aerial photography, land cover data, and well point data to quantify current and potential land use change as a result of gas drilling, as well as the types of land cover to be converted. Based on the number of permits held …

Mapping Burn Severity Using The Composite Burn Index In An Oak Savannah In Central Massachusetts, Joseph Danko Iii, John Rogan, Dominik Kulakowski, Maureen Mcconnell Sep 2024

Mapping Burn Severity Using The Composite Burn Index In An Oak Savannah In Central Massachusetts, Joseph Danko Iii, John Rogan, Dominik Kulakowski, Maureen Mcconnell

The Geographical Bulletin

The goal of this paper is to characterize the spatial variability in burn severity of a wildfire in an oak savannah within the wildland-urban interface in Worcester, Massachusetts using the Composite Burn Index (CBI). This work compares two interpolated surfaces of burn severity values collected in a March 2012 burn area and examines the statistical relationship between burn severity (CBI), fuel type and topography. The wildfire burned at low-to-medium severity (0.1 – 2.0 CBI). Burn severity was highest in mixed grass and shrub fuels beneath oak canopy cover (mean 1.11 CBI), followed by open-canopy shrub fuels (mean 1.09 CBI) and …

Local Regulatory Protection For Ecosystem Services: A Case Study From The Karst Region Of Southeast Minnesota, Usa, Mary A. Williams, Susy Svatek Ziegler

The Geographical Bulletin

Human communities depend upon a myriad of ecosystem goods and services, which are produced by and depend on natural environmental processes occurring at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Land-use policy seldom recognizes the importance of these services or the environmental processes generating these services. This study examined the degree to which ecosystem services and supporting environmental processes are regulated at two United States municipal levels: city and county. Several ecosystem services but few environmental processes are regulated to some extent. We identified policy needs for environmentally sensitive karst features, aquifer recharge, groundwater quality, plant and animal populations, and flood mitigation. …

Geography And The Emergence Of Sustainability Science: Missed Opportunities And Enduring Possibilities, Drew E. Bennett Sep 2024

Geography And The Emergence Of Sustainability Science: Missed Opportunities And Enduring Possibilities, Drew E. Bennett

The Geographical Bulletin

The dawn of the 21st century saw the emergence of the newly declared field of “sustainability science.” The new field’s research agenda focuses on meeting human needs while simultaneously sustaining the life support systems of the planet. The field works to merge the natural and social sciences with analyses conducted from global to local scales. Sustainability science resembles the long-standing human-environment tradition in geography, yet geography was not widely recognized as a fundamental discipline during the emergence of sustainability science. The failure of geography to exert itself in the birth of sustainability science is the latest failure by geography to …

Facebook As A Way Oflife: Louis Wirth In Thesocial Network, Larissa Zip, Rebekah Parker, Elvin Wyly Sep 2024

Facebook As A Way Oflife: Louis Wirth In Thesocial Network, Larissa Zip, Rebekah Parker, Elvin Wyly

The Geographical Bulletin

The rise of social networking practices has inspired widespread public debate and scholarly attention: a growing share of social relations began to take place online in the virtual worlds of social media sites at the same time that the ‘real’ world became majority-urban. What are the implications of these trends for how we understand the geography of urban society? In this paper, we re-engage one of the foundational contributions of twentieth-century Chicago School sociology, Louis Wirth’s article “Urbanism as a Way of Life,” (1938) to understand the socio-spatial implications of social media in an era of planetary urbanization. A growing …

Fifty Years Of Cultural Cannibalism: Contemporary Attitudes Towards Globalization In Ceará, Ryan Schleeter Sep 2024

Fifty Years Of Cultural Cannibalism: Contemporary Attitudes Towards Globalization In Ceará, Ryan Schleeter

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper focuses on the influence of Tropicália—a Brazilian art and music movement of the 1960s and 1970s—on contemporary attitudes towards cultural globalization in Ceará, Brazil. This paper examines the influence of one Tropicalist ideal in particular, the concept of antropofagia, or cultural cannibalism. Cultural cannibalism promotes the consumption of foreign cultures with the goal of internalizing and synthesizing with local cultures, and subsequently creating something wholly original. The goal of the paper is to assess the impact of antropofagia on modern attitudes towards globalizing processes and globalized phenomena in Ceará, particularly related to music. Few of the key actors …

Living In The Shadows: Exploring The Link Between Colonialism, Climate Change, And Women’S Vulnerability, Akash Bag, Anwesha Ghosh Sep 2024

Living In The Shadows: Exploring The Link Between Colonialism, Climate Change, And Women’S Vulnerability, Akash Bag, Anwesha Ghosh

Journal of International Women's Studies

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its sixth climate change report in early 2022. For the first time in thirty years, this report acknowledged colonial domination and global exploitation as drivers of the climate issue and contributors to the vulnerability of communities and groups. Colonialism, climate change, and women’s vulnerability are rarely discussed in the available literature. A scoping review was done to determine how colonialism makes women more vulnerable to climate change and related disasters. The study examined when and how colonialism increases women’s vulnerability in the Global North and South. Through the study, it was …

Evolving An Intersectional And Equality Approach To Addressing Issues Of Abortion In Nigeria, Ibrahim A. Obadina Sep 2024

Evolving An Intersectional And Equality Approach To Addressing Issues Of Abortion In Nigeria, Ibrahim A. Obadina

Journal of International Women's Studies

Anti-abortion regulation and criminalization in Nigeria raises questions about religious, societal, and cultural dispositions to abortion. If one defers to religious and cultural norms that are against abortion, what remains are concerns about discrimination based on gender, age, and economic status. At the regional level, the focus of abortion activism has consistently been on the legal justification for permitting abortion on recognized grounds, particularly under the African Women Protocol, known as the Maputo Protocol. This work analyzes socio-economic grounds for legal justifications for permitting abortion, focusing on how inequality and discrimination can shape the regulation and governance of abortion, especially …

#Arewametoo: Localized Resistance To The Abuse Of Women In Northern Nigeria, Ololade Afolabi, Hauwa Nuhu Shaffi

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article explores the development of the #ArewaMeToo movement in Northern Nigeria. The study is contextualized within the theory of transnational feminism to argue that digital practices among non-Western women are more than merely a technological advancement and are significantly attuned to the socio-political climate of their societies. Therefore, as the #MeToo movement which began in the West goes global, women in Northern Nigerian have found a space to effect social change by resisting socio-cultural practices that challenge their social agency. Using the interview method, we articulate the uniqueness of #ArewaMeToo as a movement that is rooted in specific sociocultural …

Single Maritime Boundary And Dual Maritime Regimes: Case Study Of Indonesia, Bebeb Abdul Kurnia Nugraha Djundjunan, Huala Adolf, Achmad Gusman Siswandi, Damos Dumali Agusman Sep 2024

Single Maritime Boundary And Dual Maritime Regimes: Case Study Of Indonesia, Bebeb Abdul Kurnia Nugraha Djundjunan, Huala Adolf, Achmad Gusman Siswandi, Damos Dumali Agusman

Indonesian Journal of International Law

Various judgements of international tribunals have shown a trend of the use of Single Maritime Boundary (SMB) in solving maritime boundary disputes. The application of SMB by international tribunals are based on the submission of the parties in dispute, typically to simplify the maritime boundary delimitation process. The concept of the SMB line, which puts the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf boundaries into one line, has grown into a deceptive perspective when taking into account that the provisions under the 1982 UNCLOS, particularly Articles 74 and 83, are the same. The application of SMBs is likely to be disadvantageous …
