Power Politics And Nuclear Weapons: A Geopolitical Analysis Of Iran’S Nuclear Program, Jade Matthias
Power Politics And Nuclear Weapons: A Geopolitical Analysis Of Iran’S Nuclear Program, Jade Matthias
Rwanda: Post-Genocide Restoration and Peacebuilding
Abstract
Iran's nuclear program has long been a central concern in global security, influencing both regional power dynamics and international relations. This paper examines how geopolitical factors shape Iran's pursuit of nuclear technology, particularly in relation to its national security, regional dominance, and diplomatic leverage. While Iran’s nuclear ambitions are often analyzed in isolation, this study situates them within the context of the evolving global power landscape, particularly the rise of China and the perceived decline of U.S. influence. The paper argues that Iran’s nuclear program functions as both a defensive measure and a strategic tool in power politics, serving …

Coral Reef Health Assessments At Four Reefs Near Isla Colón And Isla Bastimentos In Bocas Del Toro, Panama, Rose Clarke
Panama: Tropical Ecology, Marine Ecosystems, and Biodiversity Conservation
Coral reefs are crucial marine ecosystems in the Caribbean Sea, but they are in decline and facing increasing threat from local and global anthropogenic stressors. This study employed a collection of reef health indicators to develop a holistic view of the health of four reefs in the Bocas del Toro archipelago of Panama. Photo and video transect methodology were used to survey fish assemblages, benthic cover, coral bleaching, and coral disease in two reefs exposed to the open ocean and two reefs sheltered in a semi-enclosed bay. Results revealed that the health of sheltered reefs surveyed was generally better than …

Tracing Transitions: Cartographical Assessment Of Agricultural And Industrial Change In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Sage Mailhiot
Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation
Industrial presence has increased in the Ecuadorian Amazon over the past several decades, in the form of lucrative monoculture cultivation and petroleum extraction. Simultaneously, large quantities of land have been deforested. Using a combination of GIS and remote sensing tools such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and supervised classification, this study assesses the changes in vegetation, land-use, and petroleum infrastructure in the surrounding area of the Kichwa community of Loma del Tigre, between the years 2011-2024. The interactions and connections between these three landscape factors are also considered. The study region encompasses growing urban areas, African palm plantations, pasture, …

Gender In Tanzania: People’S Perceptions On Changing Female Gender Roles In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Samantha Rice
Gender In Tanzania: People’S Perceptions On Changing Female Gender Roles In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Samantha Rice
Tanzania: Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology
Traditional gender roles have existed in Tanzania for centuries and are only now beginning to change as the country becomes increasingly globalized and more immersed in the global scene. Many studies in Tanzania focus on the lived experiences of women and women’s equality from an outsider’s perspective. Few focus on the general population’s perception of the state of gender roles and how they are changing. The city of Dar Es Salaam is uniquely exposed to external influences, being a large commercial city growing more rapidly than most cities in Africa. By using a questionnaire and the general population of Dar …

From Conflict To Classroom: The Impact Of The Anglophone Crisis On Displaced Students' Education In Yaoundé, Sitota Therese Blomquist
Cameroon: Development and Social Change
The Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon has caused significant disruption to the education of students from the Northwest and Southwest regions, leading to displacement and resettlement in Francophone areas such as Yaoundé. This study explores the educational experiences of displaced Anglophone students aged 18+ in secondary education in Yaoundé, focusing on the challenges they face in adapting to a Francophone education system, their coping mechanisms, and the support they receive from schools, local organizations, and the government. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research conducts in-depth interviews with displaced students and key stakeholders, revealing that language barriers, cultural differences, and financial constraints …

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The Stockholm Resilience Centre has concluded that the number of "planetary boundaries" we are crossing has increased from three in 2009, when the Centre's researchers first introduced the concept, to six in 2023. Crossing these boundaries means humans are changing basic attributes of planetary systems to the point of risking the future of civilization. And the distinction between "safe" and "just" planetary boundaries raises questions regarding how to conceptualize the "good life." In this latest in a biannual series of essays, members of the Environmental Law Collaborative explore conceptions of the "good" as well as the various elements necessary to …
Khet खेत: Board Game Development As A Knowledge Producing Mechanism For Agroecological Development In Nepal, Margaret Mclaughlin
Khet खेत: Board Game Development As A Knowledge Producing Mechanism For Agroecological Development In Nepal, Margaret Mclaughlin
Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya
Sustainable agriculture is a frequently weaponized phrase with a varying degree of intentions and applications world-wide. For Nepal, true sustainability lies within cultivating traditional indigenous agricultural practices in favor of imported western methods which are ill suited for the unique geography of Nepal and the longevity of the people and place they call home. Agroecology, or the focus on the importance of biodiversity conservation and attention to the greater natural balance lies at the heart of agricultural development and community building efforts which sustain Nepali agriculture at its core. By using board game play as a facilitator of cooperative knowledge …
International Advocacy For Tibet: The Current State Of Geopolitical Influences And Methods Of International Action For Tibetan Human And Political [email protected], Sophia Comiskey
Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples
Historically, international advocacy for Tibet has been shaped by Cold War and decolonization era policies to frame Tibetans as victimized objects of international charity. This has left a legacy which continues today, in which Tibetans advocating for an end to human rights abuses inside of China interact with a broader international system which has historically left them out of their own advocacy movement. In this paper, I focus on the methods of appeals that the Central Tibetan Administration and Tibetan non-governmental organizations make to foreign governments and supranational bodies like the UN, because these are what have been seen to …
Big Sinners: Tracing Substance Addiction From The West To East Through Tourism, Linnea Anderson
Big Sinners: Tracing Substance Addiction From The West To East Through Tourism, Linnea Anderson
Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples
People have long sought to control and harness the power vested in drugs. Said power is both real and imagined. Drug policy capitalizes on its “imagined power” by constructing social and political narratives about drug addiction. Sometimes these narratives are fair, based on evidence, and support individuals facing substance use disorders. Other times, they are misleading, corrupted, or misrepresentative of the actual “drug problem”. When defined outside the context of their environment and identity, drug users must relinquish agency over how their life is conceived and acted upon. Further, when drug use is defined in misleading to incorrect terms, individuals, …
When Do Justices Vote Against Their Ideology?, Ember Bowman
When Do Justices Vote Against Their Ideology?, Ember Bowman
Honors Theses
This paper examines the inherently political nature of the U.S. Supreme Court, focusing on the appointment process, judicial behavior, and the influence of public opinion and how those cause justices to vote against their ideologies. The Supreme Court was created to be an independent judiciary, however, today that proves to be untrue. It analyzes constitutional provisions and the historical development of the Court’s powers, drawing on Federalist No. 78 to emphasize the importance of judicial independence. This study highlights the role of the President and Senate in appointing justices, exploring how political and demographic criteria affect nominations. Additionally, it addresses …

Addressing The Teacher Shortage: A Data-Driven Exploration Of Computer Science Teacher Capacity In Wisconsin High Schools, Sujeeth Goud Ramagoni
Dissertations (1934 -)
The rapid evolution of technology and its integration across virtually every field has made computer science (CS) education a crucial component of modern curricula. Despite the increasing demand for CS skills and being the top source of new wage creation in the U.S., CS education remains undervalued and underrepresented in high school systems. This disparity is particularly evident in Wisconsin (WI), where the lack of certified CS teachers creates significant barriers to student access and equitable participation in CS courses. Although WI implemented a CS teacher certification requirement over 30 years ago and was among the earlier states to adopt …

Are California’S Local Jurisdictions Disproportionately Directing Growth Toward Existing Disadvantaged Communities? Evidence From The Southern California And San Francisco Bay Area Regions, Shishir Mathur, Christopher Ferrell
Mineta Transportation Institute
Communities across the United States are striving to promote smart urban growth through compact urban infill residential development. They are doing so to mitigate sprawl's negative fiscal, environmental, social, and physical impacts, strengthen land use-housing-transportation linkages, and develop at densities needed for well-functioning public transit. Some states, such as California, have gone a step further by linking compact urban infill development as critical to meeting greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. Anecdotal evidence suggests some California local jurisdictions are planning disproportionately large amounts of new urban development in disadvantaged communities (DACs). However, empirical evidence is lacking. This study aims to fill …
Panel Discussion: Balancing Scholarship, Teaching And Service To Succeed On The Tenure Track – A Workshop For Pretenure Colleagues And Faculty Aspirants, Brenda Smith
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
In imagining the National People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference, the planning committee brainstormed about the theme of the conference and the scope of panels and opportunities that would capture the breadth and vibrancy of scholarship by faculty of color. An antecedent, however, to that scholarship is the entry, success, and thriving of faculty of color in the academy.

Using Gis To Visualize Daily Routines At The Neighborhood And Household Scales: A Feminist Approach Using A Nineteenth-Century Diary, Sterling Quinn
Geography Faculty Scholarship
Feminist scholars in the discipline of geography have noted the ways that routine activities at the household and neighborhood scales contribute to power relations and identity formation. Geographic information systems (GIS), with their ability to create multiple visual representations of people’s experiences in space at any scale, hold great potential for revealing these local processes and patterns that are often lost or invisible in broader historical narratives, especially when they pertain to women and children. This article contributes an example by using GIS to encode and map everyday events in a diary kept by Elisabeth Koren, a nineteenth-century Norwegian immigrant …

Drought-Induced Alterations In Carbon And Water Dynamics Of Chinese Fir Plantations At The Trunk Wood Stage, Yijun Liu, Li Zhang, Wende Yan, Yuanying Peng, Hua Sun, Xiaoyong Chen
Faculty Authors and Creators Reception
Over the past three decades, China has implemented extensive reforestation programs, primarily utilizing Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) in southern China, to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and counter extreme climate events. However, the effects of drought on the carbon sequestration capacity of these forests, particularly during the trunk wood stage, remain unclear. This study, conducted in Huitong, Hunan, China, from 2008 to 2013, employed the eddy covariance method to measure carbon dioxide (CO2) and water fluxes in Chinese fir forests, covering a severe drought year in 2011. The purpose was to elucidate the dynamics of carbon and water fluxes …

Mental Health Among Honors College Students: Evidence From College Entry Essays, Mohini Gobin, Jaclyn Kopel, Eric Osborne-Christenson, Anna Shostya
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
This study explores the effect of preexisting mental health issues on college students’ academic performance. Using unique data from the honors college at a medium-sized urban private university, authors examine college entry essays (N = 1,062) in five classes (two pre-pandemic and three post-pandemic), as well as advisors’ (N = 7) notes. Mental health (MH) concerns are grouped into six non-mutually exclusive categories: depression/anxiety, neurodiversity/learning disabilities, identity-related concerns, grief/loss, trauma, and the mental health of others whose lives impact the student. The study finds that the number of honors students citing mental health in their entrance essays more …

The Cultural Dimensions Of Palliative Care: Exploring Barriers To Effective Care Provision In Low And Middle-Income Countries, Kyra Phelan
Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy
The rising prevalence of chronic illnesses, particularly cancer, and aging populations in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) underscore the urgent need for palliative care. Palliative care (PC) improves the quality of life for patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses by addressing physical, psychological, and spiritual suffering. However, cultural barriers impede its implementation, particularly in LMICs. This paper identifies some of these barriers, including the widely held misconceptions of palliative care, inadequate truth-telling practices, and insufficient attention to patients' diverse spiritual needs. It also highlights systemic obstacles such as limited resources, a lack of trained personnel, and inadequate government prioritization. This …

The recently concluded WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge mandates disclosure requirements in patent applications, thereby creating an obligation to attribute the use of genetic resources and traditional knowledge. The WIPO member countries thus have an opportunity to modify their national patent laws, so that they can effectively control genetic resources and traditional knowledge. This article examines the choices that the biodiversity-rich countries have when designing their national legal systems to implement the treaty.
“We Don’T Know What We Don’T Know”: Improving The Quality Of Stem Teaching In A British International School By Developing Teachers’ Stem Pedagogical Knowledge And Stem Instructional Practices, Matthew James Fagg
Theses and Dissertations
This research aimed at improving the quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching at a British international school in Brunei Darussalam. Evidence from a range of sources suggested that teachers at the school were not employing common STEM instructional practices when giving their pupils STEM problems to solve. The purpose of the two research questions was to identify how STEM lessons were being taught in Grades 2 to 7 in the school, and to measure the influence of STEM-related professional development sessions on teachers’ STEM pedagogical knowledge and STEM instructional practices. The researcher followed an eight-stage action-research cycle …
