Constitutional Rights Of Artificial Intelligence, Mizuki Hashiguchi Apr 2024

Constitutional Rights Of Artificial Intelligence, Mizuki Hashiguchi

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

On February 8, 2022, the Italian Parliament approved constitutional amendments to protect the environment. A member of Parliament stated that the environment is an element of Italy, and that safeguarding the environment means safeguarding humans. The need to protect the environment seems to have become a critical component of public conscience. Likewise, if society perceives that artificial intelligence is vitally important for humanity, does constitutional law allow constitutional rights for artificial intelligence to be created?

Extending constitutional rights to artificial intelligence may be consistent with the jurisprudential history of rights. Constitutional rights have undergone metamorphosis over time to protect new …

Some Lessons For Crafting A State Constitution-Based Right To A Clean Environment, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson Apr 2024

Some Lessons For Crafting A State Constitution-Based Right To A Clean Environment, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Pace Environmental Law Review

While New York most recently added an environmental rights amendment to its constitution, Pennsylvania and Montana have had these amendments in their constitutions since the seventies. Hawaii, Rhode Island, Illinois, and Massachusetts have enacted weaker iterations of rights to a clean environment. Other states, like Maine, have faced challenges that blocked an amendment’s passage. This Article provides an initial analysis of the state environmental rights amendments currently in place, examining their origins, language, placement in the constitutions, and the major judicial decisions impacting their interpretation. It concludes by comparing the existing environmental rights amendments to the proposed amendment that failed …

Preparing And Teaching Data Science Courses, Dale E. Parson Apr 2024

Preparing And Teaching Data Science Courses, Dale E. Parson

Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty

Preparing and teaching realistic data science courses requires labor-intensive preparation and course delivery. It is not enough to download data and push buttons on machine learning tools. First, there must be a human expert available in the problem domain to supply data and evaluate work. Without a human expert to provide information that is missing or incorrect in archived data, the tendency is to take the output of machine learning algorithms using potentially faulty data on faith. Second, any real-world data requires custom scripts for correcting invalid values, creating derived attributes, and formatting data for analysis. Then comes the analysis, …

Dried Saliva Spot As An Effective Tool In The Diagnosis And Management Of Chronic Disease., Naveen Chaurasia, Ankit Jain, Nitin Dubey

The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

In recent decades, there has been significant progress in non-invasive sampling techniques, which serve as effective tools in treating and managing various chronic diseases. Among these techniques, dried saliva spot (DSS) sampling of human saliva has emerged as a prominent alternative to serum for detecting targeted molecules. The diagnostic potential of saliva has been extensively studied, highlighting its applicability across a spectrum of diseases. In addition to DSS, other sampling methods, such as dried plasma spots, dried blood spots, and dried matrix spots, have been explored. Various types of filter papers have been employed in DSS sampling procedures, with notable …

Positioning Disability In Wilderness Space, Rebecca Hobart Apr 2024

Positioning Disability In Wilderness Space, Rebecca Hobart

Geography ETDs

This thesis examines the social construction of the disabled body in recreational wilderness space. A political ecology framework guides the research questions: What are the actual or perceived barriers to participation for differently abled hikers in wilderness recreational spaces, and how do these challenges manifest in long-distance hiking spaces? In situating Foucault’s theories of the body as shaped by power relations, this thesis asserts wilderness spaces to be privileged based on power conceptualized in normative notions of ability. 44 participants who self-identified as wilderness recreationalists with a disability and/or chronic health illness completed this study’s mixed-method questionnaire. Themes around practices, …

Climate Protest Scarcity In East Asia: Cross-Country Analysis Using Resource Mobilization Theory, Hikaru Komatsu, Yi-Huan Hsieh Apr 2024

Climate Protest Scarcity In East Asia: Cross-Country Analysis Using Resource Mobilization Theory, Hikaru Komatsu, Yi-Huan Hsieh

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Climate protests have been recognized as a catalyst for social transformation. Previous studies focused on protests in Western countries where protests were abundant. Few studies paid attention to regions where protests were scarce. As a first step towards understanding the reasons for climate protest scarcity in East Asia, we used Resource Mobilization Theory and explored factors correlated with climate protest significance among different countries. In addition to confirming factors already identified in previous studies (e.g., the density of non-governmental organizations), we uncovered two novel factors: working hours and trust in strangers. By examining these correlations, we discuss potential mechanisms underlying …

White-Fronted Capuchins (Cebus Albifrons Aequatorialis) In La Hesperia Cloud Forest Reserve: A Study Of Aggressive Behaviors In Response To Human Presence, Marin Lynch

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Ecuadorian white-fronted capuchin, Cebus albifrons aequatorialis, is a critically endangered primate species native to Ecuador and northern Peru. Their population consists of only a handful of surviving troops spread out across this region. One surviving population exists in La Hesperia Cloud Forest Reserve in Ecuador. This reserve serves as an education and volunteer site for dozens of international travelers every year. I studied the effect of the presence of humans and the lodging they have constructed. Specifically, I investigated the effect on behavior of the proximity of the troops alpha male to manmade structures in the reserve. I …

“Making The Bed”: Challenging Ideologies Of Ownership, Nonlocality, And Romanticism In The Age Of The Anthropocene, Ainsley P. Foster Apr 2024

“Making The Bed”: Challenging Ideologies Of Ownership, Nonlocality, And Romanticism In The Age Of The Anthropocene, Ainsley P. Foster

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The current Age of the Anthropocene marks a recent and rapid transition into a period in climate history that is notably defined by human impact. Modern Western sentiments of grief, frustration, and romanticism as a result of the interplay between domestic and corporate spaces seem to culminate in an overall attitude of apathy and acceptance of the Age of the Anthropocene. Various art forms collaborate to create the current conversation of the causatory and reactionary relationship that humans have with the Anthropocene, offering interpretations of how individuals and corporations view ownership of and responsibilities to the environment. There is a …

Photography, Architecture, And Environment: An Architectural Analysis Of Edward Ruscha’S 26 Gasoline Stations, Rebecca Tonguis Apr 2024

Photography, Architecture, And Environment: An Architectural Analysis Of Edward Ruscha’S 26 Gasoline Stations, Rebecca Tonguis

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

This presentation explores Edward Ruscha’s photobook 26 Gasoline Stations through an architectural lens. Specifically, it treats Ruscha’s work as historic evidence of how consumption, industry, and commodity have infiltrated all kinds of environmental contexts through architectural manifestations. Known for being the first artist’s book, 26 Gasoline Stations ambiguously exists as both fine art and documentation of everyday conditions, with the overall graphic character highlighting its perceived focus on overarching narrative. Since gasoline stations are the primary subject of each of the 26 photographs, the subject of this work is arguably architecture, suggesting that the historic relationship between mass gas consumption—or …

Implications For Energy Demand And Emissions By Mitigating Heat Stress In Heterogeneous Urban Building Types In India, Aishwarya V Iyer Apr 2024

Implications For Energy Demand And Emissions By Mitigating Heat Stress In Heterogeneous Urban Building Types In India, Aishwarya V Iyer

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The buildings sector plays a key role in influencing global demand for energy and materials, and the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). 80% of future population growth is expected to take place in the Global South, primarily populated with low-and-middle income (LMI) countries, making these countries hotspots for growth in the buildings sector, especially the residential sector. India, the most populated low-and-middle income country, is expected to lead the world in energy growth from the residential sector in the next decades. However, previous global reports often do not represent the diversity in building types from these countries, especially excluding the …

Social-Ecological Practice Theory And Human-Wildlife Interactions: People, Cattle, And Predators In Makgadikgadi, Botswana, Katherine Orrick Apr 2024

Social-Ecological Practice Theory And Human-Wildlife Interactions: People, Cattle, And Predators In Makgadikgadi, Botswana, Katherine Orrick

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

2024My dissertation delves into the complex interplay between human activities and wildlife dynamics, focusing on understanding and mitigating human-wildlife interactions (HWI) for sustainable coexistence. Overseeing and managing HWI requires acknowledging that the behavior and actions toward humans and wildlife are made up of local variations across both ecological and social processes. This intertwinement of ecological and social processes is complex; hence, conservation projects aiming to overcome human-wildlife conflict may, in fact, risk exacerbating it whenever either process is only superficially addressed. Ecologists, social scientists, and policy makers are challenged with a lack of knowledge surrounding subject-specific theory and language to …

Investigation Of Natural And Anthropogenic Factors Influencing Groundwater Quality And Availability In The Northwestern Appalachian Basin, Helen Grace Siegel Apr 2024

Investigation Of Natural And Anthropogenic Factors Influencing Groundwater Quality And Availability In The Northwestern Appalachian Basin, Helen Grace Siegel

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The Northwestern Appalachian Basin (NAB) encompasses a region of more than 100,000 square kilometers across parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia and is home to a population of nearly 700,000 rural residents who rely on private groundwater wells as their sole source of drinking water. Rural communities in the NAB are often under-resourced and the cost of treatment or replacement of private water supplies may be prohibitive to many, leaving residents susceptible to health impacts associated with groundwater contamination and shifts in water availability under a changing climate. While vital to the rural communities of the NAB, groundwater withdrawals …

The Economic And Enviromental Benefits Of Railroad Electrification In The United States, Jeremiah Bishop Apr 2024

The Economic And Enviromental Benefits Of Railroad Electrification In The United States, Jeremiah Bishop

Sustainable Supply Chain Management

The United States, despite being a global leader in various sectors, lags in railroad electrification compared to other major countries. This paper explores the history, benefits, and obstacles associated with transitioning from diesel-electric to electrified railroads for Class I freight services. Historically, electrification in the U.S. was limited due to high capital costs and the economic advantages of diesel-electric locomotives. However, rising environmental concerns and stringent EPA emission regulations are pushing for a reevaluation of this stance. Electrified railroads offer significant economic benefits, including lower operating and maintenance costs, job creation, and long-term sustainability. Environmentally, electrification could drastically reduce greenhouse …

Hydroclimatic Trends And Streamflow Response To Recent Climate Change: An Application Of Discrete Wavelet Transform And Hydrological Modeling In The Passaic River Basin, New Jersey, Usa, Felix Oteng Mensah, Clement Aga Alo, Duke Ophori Apr 2024

Hydroclimatic Trends And Streamflow Response To Recent Climate Change: An Application Of Discrete Wavelet Transform And Hydrological Modeling In The Passaic River Basin, New Jersey, Usa, Felix Oteng Mensah, Clement Aga Alo, Duke Ophori

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The exigency of the current climate crisis demands a more comprehensive approach to addressing location-specific climate impacts. In the Passaic River Basin (PRB), two bodies of research—hydroclimatic trend detection and hydrological modeling—have been conducted with the aim of revealing the basin’s hydroclimate patterns as well as the hydrologic response to recent climate change. In a rather novel application of the wavelet transform tool, we sidelined the frequently used Mann–Kendal (MK) trend test, to identify the hidden monotonic trends in the inherently noisy hydroclimatic data. By this approach, the use of MK trend test directly on the raw data, whose results …
