ENGS 89/90 Reports
US Hospitals account for 8.5% of total national greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, an average hospital uses 49.3 gallons/ft2 of water, 31kWh/ft2 of energy, produces 8,400 lbs of solid waste, and receives over 170,000 visits per month.1 This reveals a chance for US hospitals to move toward a greener standard of care. Therefore, hospitals need a data driven way to make environmentally conscious decisions. The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) aims to environmentally evaluate their “Hope Grows at Home” (HGH) program where qualifying premature babies can receive care from home. The program was selected because it was considered a representative example …

Examining The Impact Of Electric Vehicle Adoption On Health, Socioeconomic Disparities, And Policy, Arham Limoochi
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Transportation is a crucial source of air pollution in the United States, accounting for nearly 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions. This considerable contribution to environmental degradation has led many scholars to advocate for a shift towards Electric Vehicles (EVs) as an effective strategy to combat climate change and its adverse effects. EVs, known for their innovative design and reliance on alternative energy sources, differ significantly from traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines. This transition is more than a technological advancement; it symbolizes a significant move towards sustainable transportation, impacting environmental sustainability, public health, and socio-economic equity. My dissertation explores …
Negotiating Environmental Justice In Ukraine, Paul R. Williams, Sindija Beta
Negotiating Environmental Justice In Ukraine, Paul R. Williams, Sindija Beta
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
This Article examines the dynamics of negotiating environmental justice in Ukraine amid pressure from certain international actors for an Amnesty-Based Peace in Ukraine. While it is currently unclear how Russia’s war in Ukraine will end, it is likely that there will be significant discussion around forms of justice, including how to address the grave environmental damage Russia has caused in Ukraine. This Article looks at previous precedents of Amnesty-Based Peace in Angola, Haiti, and Uganda and decisions and commentaries by international actors to argue that appeasement has not fostered durable peace and is generally disfavored by judicial and non-judicial bodies. …

Closing The Renter-Sized Gap In The Inflation Reduction Act: How Housing Policy Can Help Climate Legislation Achieve Environmental Justice, Madison M. Schettler
Closing The Renter-Sized Gap In The Inflation Reduction Act: How Housing Policy Can Help Climate Legislation Achieve Environmental Justice, Madison M. Schettler
Connecticut Law Review
The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in August 2022 was an important step forward in American climate policy. The Act is essential to the United States’ goal of effective climate change mitigation efforts, and other countries have even begun to use it as a model for climate mitigation. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides the framework by which the United States will transition away from fossil fuels and move towards an energy grid powered predominantly by renewable sources. For the first time, the Act addresses head-on the climate and environmental injustices that exist in the United States due …
Critical Theories, Justice, And The Rule Of Law, Adam J. Macleod
Critical Theories, Justice, And The Rule Of Law, Adam J. Macleod
Scholarly Articles
An increasing number of legal scholars and activists now identify law as an impediment to justice that must be deconstructed. The deconstructionists tear down the resources we need to sustain the rule of law. And as they deconstruct law, they also deconstruct justice itself. Against deconstructionism, the classical tradition of jurisprudence that gave us our fundamental law affirms that we can know justice and that we can achieve justice through the establishment of law.
That classical tradition made possible the conviction that law is not a mere product of power, as the deconstructionists assert. And that conviction made the rule …
Work Motivation And Occupational Attitudes: An Application Of Self-Determination Theory Among Rangers, Richard L. Elligson Jr
Work Motivation And Occupational Attitudes: An Application Of Self-Determination Theory Among Rangers, Richard L. Elligson Jr
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Job attitudes of rangers play a key role in the implementation and effectiveness of conservation initiatives. As such, scholars have begun to examine the attitudes rangers hold towards their role, organization, and external working environment. However, little is known about work motivation among rangers. Work motivation is a key predictor of employee performance, job attitudes, and well-being. The relationship between work motivation and ranger occupational attitudes may offer insight that conservation agencies can leverage to improve positive job attitudes. Guided by self-determination theory and the criminal justice literature, this study examines the relationship between ranger work motivation and attitudes towards …
Debts And Desertion: Bankruptcy Law And The Orphan Well Crisis
Debts And Desertion: Bankruptcy Law And The Orphan Well Crisis
Fordham Environmental Law Review
The issue of orphan wells—unplugged and unproductive oil and
gas wells with no responsible operator—poses a significant
environmental and public health threat in the United States. The scale
of this crisis is alarming: there are over 120,000 documented orphan
wells and potentially millions more undocumented. These wells are
often significant sources of methane emissions and other toxins that
exacerbate climate change and endanger the health of surrounding
communities. This paper examines the orphan well crisis, exploring
how wells become orphaned and the environmental and health
impacts associated with them. Furthermore, it delves into how the
situation is likely to worsen …

Considerations For Enhancing Participation And Data Accuracy In Geospatial Research In Rural Areas: Experiences With Pgis In Northern Malawi, Daniel Kpienbaareh, Isaac Luginaah, Rachel Bezner Kerr
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Rural environments are experiencing rapid changes that must be explored to understand, enhance, and facilitate positive changes and adapt to detrimental changes. However, the information researchers can obtain about the environment to identify effective management strategies for rural resources is hindered by several factors. Participatory geospatial research presents an approach that integrates local voices to map the facts and values of rural people and represent environmental changes. Here, we draw on more than six years of participatory geospatial research in rural northern Malawi to identify and present various considerations that participatory geospatial researchers and planners should be mindful of when …

A Study Of Multimodal Accessibility Equity And Spatio-Temporal Relationships Between Transit, Job Density And Modal Split, Seyedsoheil Sharifiasl
Planning Dissertations - Archive
In North American cities, the land use and transportation systems are associated with low-density, suburban-type urban development, where the built environment contributes to a mobility pattern that is extremely reliant on automobiles. Several studies in the past decades have documented noticeable and concerning patterns of unjust and unsustainable transportation in this context. As a result, for those population groups with limited access to private transportation, this form of urban structure is equivalent to limited access to opportunities, leading to various environmental and social problems. These problems exacerbate inequities in access to transportation, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. From a sustainable development …

Corn War: A Trade Fight Between The United States And Mexico, Ernesto Hernández-López
Corn War: A Trade Fight Between The United States And Mexico, Ernesto Hernández-López
Cardozo Law Review de•novo
An international fight grows over corn. The United States claims that México’s ban on genetically modified (GMO) corn violates the United StatesMexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). México prohibits GMO corn for human consumption. American arguments focus on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures, covered in Chapter 9 of the USMCA. A trade panel will review these.
This Essay first describes SPS arguments and relevant trade rules. The United States’ complaints emphasize that México’s ban is excessive, is not consistent with international standards, and mishandles risks. Second, the Essay identifies the obstacles American positions face: weak mandates and deference to México. Chapter 9 of …

The Embeddedness And Reproduction Of Ableism In Social Work And A Call To Centre Disability Justice, Amber P.E. Young, Kathleen C. Sitter
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Predominately focused on a northern Turtle Island (otherwise known as Canada) context, this article focuses on how ableism, colonialism, and white supremacy intersect, and are embodied and reproduced in dominant social work education spaces and practices. We begin by providing a brief contextual background of the development of social work on northern Turtle Island and how certain social workspaces maintain and (re) produce ableism while intersecting with multiple forms of oppression. We then explore/reflect upon how centering a disability justice framework can inform/transform social work research design (including doctoral research design) and pedagogical practices, citing examples to support these claims.

Energy Assistance And Health: Policy Recommendations, Gabriella Crivelli
Energy Assistance And Health: Policy Recommendations, Gabriella Crivelli
Public Health Theses
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) does not currently meet the demands of households across the country, and by one estimate, “funding would need to increase 10 to 20 times above 2021 levels in order to cover the energy costs of all eligible low-income families” (Castillo & Daniel, 2022, para. 2). Despite the inadequate coverage, more than 5.5 million households relied on LIHEAP funds to support the payment of heating costs in FY2022 (ACF Office of Community Services, n.d.). Financial barriers to energy access among low-income households is not an issue that should be analyzed as a financial circumstance …

The transformation from authoritative to user-generated data landscapes has garnered considerable attention, notably with the proliferation of crowdsourced geospatial data. Facilitated by advancements in digital technology and high-speed communication, this paradigm shift has democratized data collection, obliterating traditional barriers between data producers and users. While previous literature has compartmentalized this subject into distinct platforms and application domains, this review offers a holistic examination of crowdsourced geospatial data. Employing a narrative review approach due to the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, we investigate both human and Earth observations through crowdsourced initiatives. This review categorizes the diverse applications of these data and …

This paper explores the exposome concept and its role in elucidating the interplay between environmental exposures and human health. We introduce two key concepts critical for exposomics research. Firstly, we discuss the joint impact of genetics and environment on phenotypes, emphasizing the variance attributable to shared and nonshared environmental factors, underscoring the complexity of quantifying the exposome's influence on health outcomes. Secondly, we introduce the importance of advanced data-driven methods in large cohort studies for exposomic measurements. Here, we introduce the exposome-wide association study (ExWAS), an approach designed for systematic discovery of relationships between phenotypes and various exposures, identifying significant …

Permitting The Energy Transition, James W. Coleman
Permitting The Energy Transition, James W. Coleman
Articles
The United States now has a landmark climate and clean energy law: the Inflation Reduction Act. The Act may provide more than a trillion dollars in spending on new clean-energy technology—over $8,000 for every household in the United States. What will Americans receive for this titanic investment? The answer largely turns on how quickly new clean-energy projects will receive permission to build.
As this Article explains, a fundamental irony of the energy system is that the cleaner energy sources we are now funding are more dependent on building far-flung infrastructure than our traditional energy sources. Coal and oil built the …
Differential Impacts Of Weather Anomalies On Household Energy Expenditure Shares: A Comparison Of Clustered Panel Analysis Methods, Jordan Champion
Differential Impacts Of Weather Anomalies On Household Energy Expenditure Shares: A Comparison Of Clustered Panel Analysis Methods, Jordan Champion
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
Recent emphasis on environmental justice has highlighted deficiencies in our energy system that produce disparities in accessibility and affordability for the most vulnerable. Meanwhile, the realities of a gradually warming climate and the onset of a global energy crisis (IEA 2022) have coincidently contributed to spikes in both energy prices and demand. These implications threaten to further exacerbate existing disparities for income-constrained and vulnerable populations, enhancing their risk of falling into prolonged insecurity. To ensure our transition to a just, sustainable future, we must first ensure equitable access to affordable and reliable energy for everyone. Combining household-level panel and state-level …

The Relationship Between Offshore Wind Farms And Marine Wildlife In Rhode Island, Hanna Lloyd, Ashley Caputo, Brendan Foley, Catherine Chadwick, Savannah Szamborski
ENV 334 Environmental Justice
Despite political and environmental controversy, research has shown that not only do offshore wind farms have minimal impact on birds, whales, and benthic organisms, but they can actually be beneficial to marine ecosystems. However, many Rhode Island and Massachusetts citizens are concerned that the construction of the Revolution wind farm will decrease the biodiversity of marine ecosystems. Current research refutes these claims on the negative impacts of offshore wind farms, stating that their construction benefits benthic communities, has little to no impact on the health of whales, and only temporarily impacts migrating bird species. New and innovative technology has found …
