Neighborhood Light At Night And Noise Levels, And Long-Term Sleep Trajectories In The Southern Community Cohort Study, Samuel H Nyarko, Qian Xiao
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
While light at night (LAN) and noise levels have been linked to suboptimal sleep outcomes, little is known about the link between these factors and long-term suboptimal sleep trajectories. The current study examined the association of neighborhood LAN and nighttime noise with long-term sleep trajectories in a cohort of Black individuals and White individuals predominantly from low-income communities. We used data from the Southern Community Cohort Study (N = 28,759 Black individuals and 16,276 White individuals). Sleep duration was self-reported at baseline and after an average of five years of follow-up, based on which we constructed nine sleep trajectories: normal-normal …
Navigating Murky Waters: State-Level Strategies For Wetland Preservation And Tile Drainage Regulation After Sackett V. Epa, Caleb M. Swanson
Navigating Murky Waters: State-Level Strategies For Wetland Preservation And Tile Drainage Regulation After Sackett V. Epa, Caleb M. Swanson
Honors Thesis
Wetlands are some of the world’s most valuable ecosystems, serving as provisioners of species habitat, carbon sequestration, flood mitigation, water quality purification, and other ecosystem services. Human development has resulted in substantial wetland loss the world over. In the 1970s, the United States Congress passed the Clean Water Act, giving the EPA broad authority over wetland protection. However, in the summer of 2023, the United States Supreme Court decided Sackett v. EPA, limiting the EPA’s jurisdiction over wetlands to those indistinguishably connected to generally recognized “Waters of the United States” and removing federal protection for millions of acres of wetlands, …

Unveiling Colonial Legacies: Women’S Marginalization Through The Lens Of Coffee Cultivation In Northern Angola, Posi Oluwakuyide
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study investigates the historical dynamics of gender and labor by investigating the colonial production coffee production in northern Angola, the history examined spanning from the pre- colonial era of the Kongo and Ndongo kingdoms to the colonial period in the Uíge, Zaire, Bengo, and Cuanza Norte provinces. It aims to shed light on the marginalization of women within both colonial and post-independence contexts. Utilizing the Harvard analytical framework as a guide, this research explores the enduring effects of Portuguese colonialism on women's agency and economic participation. Through an examination of primarily scholarly works, this study reveals how Portuguese colonial …

Addressing The Dual Challenges Of Substance Abuse And Systemic Inequities Among Ai/An Communities: A Call For Action And Reform In Tribal Healthcare, Allessia A. Mauro
School of Professional Studies
American Indian and Alaska Native (“AI/AN”) people either rank at the bottom, or next to the bottom, of every social, health, and economic indicator; one of these metrics includes substance abuse. Substance abuse is the number one health problem facing Native populations according to the Indian Health Service (IHS), as they face numerous tribal-specific risk factors. A comprehensive literature review revealed that this is a two-pronged problem. First, Tribal Nations face a variety of socioeconomic difficulties, including poverty, poor educational support, and historical trauma that was inflicted by colonialism and generations of forced assimilation. Second, they are sovereign entities which …

A Green New England? Regional Implementation Of Grant-Based Provisions Of The Inflation Reduction Act In The Northeastern U.S., Samuel Cooper
A Green New England? Regional Implementation Of Grant-Based Provisions Of The Inflation Reduction Act In The Northeastern U.S., Samuel Cooper
Sustainability and Social Justice
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has been described as “the most significant action Congress has taken on clean energy and climate change in the nation’s history,” totaling some $370 billion in tax credits and federal grants for everything from residential solar panels to urban forestry. As the first of its size in U.S. climate policy, the IRA has been a subject of study and debate since its introduction, but it is only in this past year that funding reporting data has become available. This thesis utilizes this federal data to produce a novel analysis of IRA implementation at the …
Social-Ecological Practice Theory And Human-Wildlife Interactions: People, Cattle, And Predators In Makgadikgadi, Botswana, Katherine Orrick
Social-Ecological Practice Theory And Human-Wildlife Interactions: People, Cattle, And Predators In Makgadikgadi, Botswana, Katherine Orrick
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
2024My dissertation delves into the complex interplay between human activities and wildlife dynamics, focusing on understanding and mitigating human-wildlife interactions (HWI) for sustainable coexistence. Overseeing and managing HWI requires acknowledging that the behavior and actions toward humans and wildlife are made up of local variations across both ecological and social processes. This intertwinement of ecological and social processes is complex; hence, conservation projects aiming to overcome human-wildlife conflict may, in fact, risk exacerbating it whenever either process is only superficially addressed. Ecologists, social scientists, and policy makers are challenged with a lack of knowledge surrounding subject-specific theory and language to …
The Legality Of Second Chances: Employment For The Formerly Incarcerated, Ella Paligo
The Legality Of Second Chances: Employment For The Formerly Incarcerated, Ella Paligo
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The United States has one of the highest incarceration and recidivism rates globally. This is largely attributed to the fact that a large number of employers reserve the right to not hire those with a criminal record. To combat this, cities and states have enacted “Ban the Box” legislation which prohibits employers from inquiring about criminal history before the interview round. However, with this decision being left up to local and state officials, marginalized individuals are left open to employment discrimination. This paper explores how federal protection, like “Ban the Box” laws, must be implemented to avoid recidivism and reimprisonment.

Searching For Justice: Incorporating Critical Legal Research Into Clinic Seminar, Priya Baskaran
Searching For Justice: Incorporating Critical Legal Research Into Clinic Seminar, Priya Baskaran
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This Article provides educators with a roadmap for incorporating Critical Legal Research into Clinical Pedagogy. Critical Legal Research is a social justice-oriented critical intervention that provides a theoretical framework and practical application. Critical Legal Research provides lawyers with tools to deconstruct but also reconstruct legal research and analysis modes to engender more just, client-focused outcomes that fall outside dominant legal narratives. The problematic advent of ChatGPT and the broader incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the legal research regime has made the Critical Legal Research project more urgent than ever. Ultimately, introducing Critical Legal Research in the clinic seminar is …

Lisbon’S Electric Vehicle (Ev) Fleet: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of A Mass Adoption Of Evs In Lisbon By 2050, Maya Estrera
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
As the impacts of climate change increase, the EU and its member countries are attempting to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The adoption of electric vehicles is proving to be a promising solution to achieve this goal, and specifically, reductions in the transport sector emissions. This study analyzes the potential costs and benefits resulting from a mass adoption of electric vehicles in Lisbon by 2050. Through a cost-benefit analysis, this study aims to quantify the major costs and benefits associated with electric vehicles. The results display the potential monetary benefits of a city-wide shift to electric vehicles in addition to …
Empowering Environmental Education In Portuguese Primary Schools: Energy Focused Curriculum Recommendations And Behavioral Change Framework Guided By Principles Of Developmental Psychology, Ellie Hanson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper explores the integration of principles of developmental psychology within the context of environmental education in Portugal to promote pro-environmental behavior, and specifically energy literacy energy conservation behaviors in primary school students. A review of current literature on the state of environmental education approaches in Portugal exhibits a significant lack of structure and direction for educators to teach students relevant topics in sustainability. Using a meta-theory of behavioral change, the present work connects the elements of the COM-B model of behavioral change to relevant aspects of middle childhood cognitive development using principles of two major theories of developmental psychology. …
What Soil Is Worth: A Cost-Benefit Framework Analysis Of Syntropic Farming, Aubrey Kettley
What Soil Is Worth: A Cost-Benefit Framework Analysis Of Syntropic Farming, Aubrey Kettley
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Syntropic farming, a type of regenerative agriculture, models its farming system after a forest. This type of farming prioritizes soil health while also providing a varied yield of crops. Because it is a fairly new system globally, little research has been done on the economic impacts of syntropic farming, and therefore the feasibility of scaling up regenerative systems like this. This study aims to analyze the economic feasibility of this system through a literature review and a cost-benefit analysis framework. The results highlight the applicability, environmental advantage and economic feasibility of the system. Based on the presented framework, the short …
10 Meters To Disaster: The Challenges Of Premature Application Of Circular Economy Strategies In Jakarta’S Waste Management Structure, Almira Bowo
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Jakarta's complex issue of waste management encompasses a multitude of challenges that include inefficiencies in infrastructure, a lack of public awareness of the consequences of an inadequate waste system, socioeconomic disparities, and a deficiency in intersectoral collaboration. The urgency for holistic and sustainable solutions that prioritize proactive waste collection is underscored by the complexities of these dynamics. This field study paper argues that the attention that is being drawn towards trending waste management innovations, which are reactive strategies, could bring the waste crisis in Jakarta to an even more critical state. The sections will critically examine current waste management efforts …
