An Assessment Of Drinking Water Equity In South Carolina: Access, Affordability, Quality, And Private Well Resources, Catherine Lippert Min
An Assessment Of Drinking Water Equity In South Carolina: Access, Affordability, Quality, And Private Well Resources, Catherine Lippert Min
Theses and Dissertations
Universal access to good quality, affordable drinking water is a goal that has not yet been reached in the United States. Recently, national studies have investigated drinking water burdens including lack of access to complete plumbing, unaffordability, and poor quality individually. However, no study has examined all of these drinking water burdens together to identify communities facing multiple burdens. This study addresses this gap by analyzing disparities in access to complete plumbing, affordability of public water sources, and drinking water quality of community water systems in South Carolina and identifying communities that face multiple burdens. This study also provides the …
“The Winner Takes It All:” The Public Use Doctrine’S Disparate Impact On Impoverished Communities In Natural Gas Production, Alana Siock
Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive
The interpretation of the public use doctrine in Takings jurisprudence has evolved on both the federal and state level, and this evolution has had a disparate impact on impoverished communities. This note proposes that the persistent poverty and economic decline plaguing northeastern Pennsylvania on the microcosmic level are a product of distributive injustice, which is exacerbated and perpetuated by the expansion of the Takings Clause’s public use doctrine. This note links these exacerbations to the continuance of the boom-and-bust economies set up in regions like northeastern Pennsylvania, finding that the Takings Clause, which was enshrined in the U.S. Constitution as …

Toxic Discretion: Environmental Inequality And The Discretionary Function Exception, Sarah E. Barritt
Toxic Discretion: Environmental Inequality And The Discretionary Function Exception, Sarah E. Barritt
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
Environmental racism is far reaching and insidious, and each of these devastating instances and the institutional factors that led to them could and should be the subject of entire books in their own right. The EPA and other agencies of the United States government are complicit in multiple ways, not least of all through their abject failures to properly regulate private industry pollution in BIPOC communities. However, this Note has cabined its analysis to the government’s failure to warn these communities of environmental contamination, and what happens when it hides behind the discretionary function exception in ensuing litigation. To provide …

Reading Ecogothic Memory In Contemporary Southern Swamp Novels, Megan Caroline Brockhard Knight
Reading Ecogothic Memory In Contemporary Southern Swamp Novels, Megan Caroline Brockhard Knight
Theses and Dissertations
The ecogothic is a lens through which to engage memory, southern constructivism and identity, environmental intervention, and the literature of the American Southeast. This project establishes a framework of literary criticism that defines the ecogothic, interprets memory as truth imagined, and identifies the position of memory in the environment as a construction with which it is necessary to grapple to understand identity. This framework, compiled of existing and original scholarship, is then applied to three contemporary swamp narratives written by three different southern women writers. The swamp setting creates a unique microcosm of gothic liminality, neither fully land nor water, …
Housing Buyouts At The Intersection Of Flooding And Toxins: A Case Study Of Cheraw, South Carolina, Victoria Ponds
Housing Buyouts At The Intersection Of Flooding And Toxins: A Case Study Of Cheraw, South Carolina, Victoria Ponds
Theses and Dissertations
As climate change increases extreme weather events, efforts of managed retreat will also increase, particularly through housing buyout programs. The largest scale housing buyout programs are run through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These buyout programs focus primarily on flood hazards and exclude anthropogenic hazards. This policy is problematic in the modern technological age where compound hazards, including those involving toxin releases, are occurring more frequently. In this thesis, I investigate how disaster policies account for the intersection of these hazards in Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation buyouts in Cheraw, South …
Decolonizing Digital Accessibility Within Land/Water Realities Using Minimal Computing, Mary Rice
Decolonizing Digital Accessibility Within Land/Water Realities Using Minimal Computing, Mary Rice
Researchers
The purpose of this essay is to conceptualize accessibility in digital education for school children through a minimal computing perspective. This perspective prioritizes the contextual, social, and relational as part of the ethic of minimal computing mantra to consider What. We. Need. To achieve our goals, we begin with a story from a classroom in rural New Mexico, then we problematize definitions of accessibility for computing in educational settings considering how an identification as having disabilities is situated within colonial monolingual/monocultural structures that position minds and bodies as deficient. We connect these structures to capitalistic educational technology movements like using …
Demand Side Management Through Integrated Water Distribution Systems And Smart Irrigation Controllers, Nathan T. Lunstad
Demand Side Management Through Integrated Water Distribution Systems And Smart Irrigation Controllers, Nathan T. Lunstad
Theses and Dissertations
The innovation of electrical utilities in creating smart electrical grids has superseded that of water utilities in analogous efforts. While many water utilities are now using smart water technologies, they lack the virtual command center that allows for two-way communication for more effective forecasting, load balancing, preventive methods, emergency and master planning, and level of service delivery while ensuring environmental justice and enhancing the responsible use of resources. In this dissertation, I propose the idea of the Integrated Water Distribution System (IWDS) to overcome this challenge. IWDS coordinates management of water supply and demand in a way that benefits both …
The Ethical Duty Of Care For Suicide Ideation, Tah Ngijoi Yogo
The Ethical Duty Of Care For Suicide Ideation, Tah Ngijoi Yogo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With suicide being a leading global cause of death, there is a need to explore the ethical complexities surrounding suicide and preventive measures. This dissertation questions the morality of suicide by examining the historical and philosophical dimensions across cultures and religions. The text argues for an approach that acknowledges rational suicide while developing the ethics of paternalistic measures for suicide prevention of vulnerable populations.
Considering the ethics of autonomy, the dissertation discusses the practice of nudging in healthcare to highlight the role of paternalism in supporting informed consent. The text proposes an enhanced autonomy model that balances trust, influence, and …
Rhetorical Tapestries Of Water Injustice: The Framing Of (In)Access And (In)Justice In The Struggle For Water Security In The United States, Carla R. Richards
Rhetorical Tapestries Of Water Injustice: The Framing Of (In)Access And (In)Justice In The Struggle For Water Security In The United States, Carla R. Richards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of environmental justice. It critiques existing communication and rhetorical scholarship for overlooking the environmental dimensions of water access and justice. This gap hinders progress toward equity for marginalized communities disproportionately burdened by water insecurity.
This project proposes a communication approach that prioritizes culturally relevant strategies to empower these communities in advocating for their environmental rights and health needs. By bridging the communication and environmental justice fields, this project equips communities with the tools to demand fair solutions. It ultimately calls for a transformative shift …
Association Between Agrichemical Mixtures And Pediatric Health Outcomes: Evidence From A Nebraska Population-Based Surveillance, Jabeen Taiba
Theses & Dissertations
Human exposure to environmental contaminants is associated with various pediatric health outcomes. Agrichemicals are a significant environmental risk factor for childhood cancers and congenital anomalies, and reduced exposure could improve pediatric health outcomes. Previous studies in Nebraska have explored the association between single pollutants and pediatric cancers and birth defects. However, it is important to estimate the overall effect of the agrichemical mixture on these pediatric health outcomes. In addition to environmental risk factors, several social vulnerability factors also contribute to increased agrichemical exposure and show disparities in pediatric cancers and birth defects. The objectives of this dissertation are to …
Sport And Environmental Issues: Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes’ Personal Experiences, Ivanna M. Anderson-Villela
Sport And Environmental Issues: Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes’ Personal Experiences, Ivanna M. Anderson-Villela
Master's Theses
While sport ecology is a growing category in sport management literature, there is a lack of research exploring athletes’ experiences regarding environmental issues, and the impacts environmental issues have on student-athletes. The present study qualitatively explored the personal lived experiences of eight NCAA Division I student-athletes regarding environmental issues with the aim of identifying potential influences on values and beliefs through social norms and understanding the student-athlete perspective. Thematic analysis identified 152 raw data themes and 19 higher order themes, which were organized into four central themes: awareness, care and concern from athletic departments, implications, and advocacy. Generally, student-athletes perceived …
Comparing Shade And Impervious Surface Area With Extreme Heat And Environmental Equity: An Analysis Of The Urban Heat Island Effect In Santa Clara County, California, Jamsheed R. Mistry
Comparing Shade And Impervious Surface Area With Extreme Heat And Environmental Equity: An Analysis Of The Urban Heat Island Effect In Santa Clara County, California, Jamsheed R. Mistry
Master's Theses
In the modern epoch of the Anthropocene, the rapid rise in urban sprawling has prompted a disproportionate exposure to extreme heat within underserved communities. As the global populace becomes increasingly urbanized, the inevitable formation of urban heat islands is becoming an imminent cause of concern for environmental and social justice. Due to an increase in urbanization, anthropogenic activities have not only increased the energy demand for cooling initiatives but also have increased the intensity of heat-related illnesses, such as heart attacks, dehydration, and respiratory diseases. Additionally, urbanization has yielded an unequal distribution of heat exposure and heat-related illnesses, particularly in …
Solar Photovoltaics As Climate Change Adaptations For Farmers In West Bengal, India: Barriers Within A Food-Water-Energy Nexus Approach, Emily Rochford
Solar Photovoltaics As Climate Change Adaptations For Farmers In West Bengal, India: Barriers Within A Food-Water-Energy Nexus Approach, Emily Rochford
Capstone Collection
This capstone research project seeks to identify and address barriers to the use of solar photovoltaics (PV) as an adaptation method to climate change for farmers in West Bengal, India. These barriers are examined within the context of the food-water-energy nexus, particularly concerning the ability of many small holder farmers to produce their own food and sustain their livelihoods. Previous studies have examined both energy access and renewable energy development in West Bengal, and also the food-water-energy nexus in its application to climate change. However, there is minimal literature on how renewable energy development should be applied within the nexus …
