Modern Agricultural Servitude: The Modern Farm Worker Experience In The Salinas Valley, Jesus E. Tavarez Dec 2024

Modern Agricultural Servitude: The Modern Farm Worker Experience In The Salinas Valley, Jesus E. Tavarez

Chicana and Chicano Studies ETDs

The prevailing narrative in Chicanx studies focuses on the historical labor activism of the United Farm Workers (UFW) in the 1960s and ‘70s. I am particularly interested in examining the contemporary campesino experience in the Salinas Valley by discussing the history behind Mexican cheap labor, low wages, exploitive work conditions with inadequate healthcare, agrochemical exposure, and historical consciousness of farm workers. I will argue that farm workers are in dire need of a migratory reform as an approach to improve the working conditions of farm workers throughout California. This research aims to shed light on how the multi-billion-dollar agribusiness industry …

Why Should We Care About Care? Popular Care-Narratives And The Dependency Critique, Jay Hee-Jeong Sohn Dec 2024

Why Should We Care About Care? Popular Care-Narratives And The Dependency Critique, Jay Hee-Jeong Sohn

Kritika Kultura

This essay analyzes representations of care and dependency in popular narratives from the Global North, re-appropriating Eva Feder Kittay’s “dependency critique” as an analytical lens. Through examinations of films like Plan 75, I Care a Lot, The Bacchus Lady, Her, I’m Your Man, and La Maison de Himiko, it explores how these narratives engage with contemporary care issues, including the commodification and gendering of care work, fantasies of automated care, and alternative care models beyond traditional family structures. The analysis reveals how popular culture both reflects and shapes societal attitudes towards care, dependency, and human dignity. By interrogating these representations, …

Climate Change And The Construction Of Compromised Agency In Selected Contemporary Fiction, Jessica Murray Dec 2024

Climate Change And The Construction Of Compromised Agency In Selected Contemporary Fiction, Jessica Murray

Kritika Kultura

As the realities of climate change occupy an increasingly prominent position in all spheres of contemporary societies, the producers of cultural products grapple with these dynamics in their work. Even in texts where the climate and environmental concerns are tangential to the primary narratives, authors of contemporary fiction tend to make at least some passing reference to these dynamics. Fiction offers a space of almost limitless possibilities where writers can offer radically innovative modes of being in a world that is changing at an unprecedented rate due to anthropogenic activities. The construction of agency and the capacity of agents to …

Society Of American Foresters (Saf) Academic Publications As They Relate To The Curriculum Standards For Saf Forestry Program Accreditation: A Content Analysis, Lisa M. Bentley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Goals that impact decision-making components within academic programs in the university system have the potential to define and change the direction of a field of study, and, with that, should be thoughtfully approached with a certainty of evidence that supports responsible paradigms in forestry education. Periodic revision of the standards for accreditation by SAF influences institutional expectations that result in shifts in forestry education and should be consistent with professional forestry standards. The methodology utilized in this research contextualizes data from a sociological perspective intentionally as a method to holistically integrate data as evidence to support the interpretation of Society …

Blood On Their Hands: Settler Colonial States In The Arctic, Mer M. Dec 2024

Blood On Their Hands: Settler Colonial States In The Arctic, Mer M.

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The Arctic is currently the most rapidly warming region in the world. Modern-day media has been transfixed by the image of the poor polar bear, eeking out a difficult living as the sea ice they depend on has been melting. What often remains outside of the frame, however, are the more complex questions about how we got to this point of extreme climate change. Linking the genocidal histories of Indigenous assimilation in the Arctic to the modern-day ecological crises plaguing the region introduces the state as an overlooked climate polluter. While Arctic communities are all on the frontlines of climate …

The Fashion Regulation Fight, Eliot L. Force Dec 2024

The Fashion Regulation Fight, Eliot L. Force

Capstones

Fast fashion is a rising global phenomenon with terrible consequences for the environment and laborers across the world. In the US, fashion-specific environmental and labor regulation is practically non-existent at the federal level, but some individual states have begun proposing fashion regulation bills with the aim of curbing the industry’s harms. But in every state where these regulations have been proposed, powerful industry trade groups and companies have been fighting back against those proposed regulations, with much success, through lobbying. As climate change gets worse and the fashion industry’s practices remain unchanged, the need for regulation only becomes greater, but …

Toxic Waste Dumps And Intersectionality, Kaitlyn Vasilko Dec 2024

Toxic Waste Dumps And Intersectionality, Kaitlyn Vasilko

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Beginning in 2023, I started conducting environmental sociology research in Northwest Indiana communities because I wanted to apply what I had been learning in my sociology and behavioral science courses to real community problems. I that found toxic waste dumps (waste dumps that contain waste that is hazardous and require mandates established environmental regulations to ensure public safety) are disproportionately located in Northwest Indiana communities of color and poor whites, and I uncovered severe negative health effects that result from toxic waste dumps, in addition to the inequality faced by the populations impacted. I then conducted interviews in the community …

The Hoosier Slide: Promoting Engagement With Environment, Kayla Vasilko

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

With unsustainable production models and a plethora of other damaging activities, humans’ strain on the environment has made it impossible to assume that the planet’s ecosystem will sustain future generations (WWF, 2018); our response to this crisis will impact current and future generations and all other species on Earth (Global Stewards, 2022; United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2022). To make a difference, education about the problem needs to be furthered. I worked with the PNW Westville Warriors and the Michigan City Lubeznik Center for the Arts (a community center dedicated to offering programming that balances joy with critical thinking, with …

Beyond The Bench: Redefining Research Impact In Society, Nouran Amin Dec 2024

Beyond The Bench: Redefining Research Impact In Society, Nouran Amin

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

The following essay reports on the reflective experiences of the author’s time completing a certificate program “Advancing Graduate Research Impact in Society” offered by Purdue University’s Office of Community Engagement in Fall 2023. It begins by narrating the author's journey as a Muslim woman in STEM spaces, highlighting the lack of relatable role models and the ensuing dissonance between aspirations and prevailing narratives. Through introspection, the essay progresses to examine the paradox of publicly funded but inaccessible science, which often fails to engage with community needs and priorities. The essay underscores the importance of inclusivity and diverse representation in scientific …

Drinking Water Issues And Management In The Republic Of The Philippines, William James Smith, Jr Dec 2024

Drinking Water Issues And Management In The Republic Of The Philippines, William James Smith, Jr

The Geographical Bulletin

Major drinking water issues and management schemes in the Republic of the Philippines are examined utilizing a political geographic perspective. By examining these issues and management schemes, administrators in developing countries, such as the Philippines, can provide more effective drinking water management for their citizens. Effective drinking water management is an essential building block in the foundation of sustainable development. This type of socio-political and economic research demonstrates the importance of equity in "safe" drinking water distribution, and the value of watershedbased and integrated natural resource management. The importance of recognizing the provision of safe drinking water as a human …
