The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic highlighted the need for more rapid and routine application of modeling approaches such as quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) for protecting public health. QMRA is a transdisciplinary science dedicated to understanding, predicting, and mitigating infectious disease risks. To better equip QMRA researchers to inform policy and public health management, an Advances in Research for QMRA workshop was held to synthesize a path forward for QMRA research. We summarize insights from 41 QMRA researchers and experts to clarify the role of QMRA in risk analysis by (1) identifying key research needs, (2) highlighting emerging applications of …

Urban H: Housing, Heat, And Health, Loretta Lees Nov 2024

Urban H: Housing, Heat, And Health, Loretta Lees

Asian Management Insights

Future policy needs to triangulate the ‘triple-H’ to help marginalised urban populations.

1. The urban heat island effect generates disproportionately high temperatures in urban settlements compared to non-urban ones, leading to increased heat-related illnesses and mental health issues, especially among vulnerable and marginalised populations living in poorly-planned or -resourced areas.

The Urban-H research agenda by Boston University’s Initiative on Cities focuses on the interconnected effects of housing, heat, and health (triple-H) to develop a resilience index for cities.

3. The proposed global Urban-H Index could help cities worldwide address the triple-H crisis by guiding policymakers to craft equitable, as well …

Why Be A Treekeeper? Connecting Involvement To Volunteer Characteristics And Motivations, Jess Vogt, Annalise Nordgren, Camila Cortez, Al De Reu Nov 2024

Why Be A Treekeeper? Connecting Involvement To Volunteer Characteristics And Motivations, Jess Vogt, Annalise Nordgren, Camila Cortez, Al De Reu

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Definitions of involvement in the volunteer literature vary from the simple binary metric (volunteering or not) to frequency (how often) to metrics that use additive or statistical indices to capture concepts like duration, commitment, and satisfaction. In this paper, we examine the connections between several dimensions of volunteer involvement and the characteristics and motivations of volunteers. Who participates in volunteer urban forest stewardship? What motivates individuals to sign-up and then to continue volunteering? Does volunteers’ involvement vary with demographic factors or their motivations? We examine these questions using the results of an online survey of TreeKeepers, volunteer participants in an …

Insertion And Use Of Multicriteria Methods For Neutrosophic Judicial Evaluation, Roberto Carlos Jiménez Martinez, María José Calderón Velásquez, Manuel Augusto Suarez Albiñol, Yusleidy Marlie Gordo Gómez Nov 2024

Insertion And Use Of Multicriteria Methods For Neutrosophic Judicial Evaluation, Roberto Carlos Jiménez Martinez, María José Calderón Velásquez, Manuel Augusto Suarez Albiñol, Yusleidy Marlie Gordo Gómez

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This study addresses the growing need to integrate multicriteria methods into judicial evaluation, specifically through a neutrosophic approach, to improve the accuracy and reliability of legal decision-making. Today, the judicial system faces critical challenges related to the interpretation of evidence, the consideration of multiple factors, and the uncertainty inherent in complex cases. Although various approaches have been used in judicial evaluation, few effectively address the ambiguity and indeterminacy present in the opinions of judges and experts, leading to fragmented or biased analysis. This study seeks to close that gap by applying neutrosophic multicriteria methods, which allow for a more balanced …

'Higher' Education: Incorporating Cannabis As Interdisciplinary Curricula, John W. Lipford, A. Scott Rood Oct 2024

'Higher' Education: Incorporating Cannabis As Interdisciplinary Curricula, John W. Lipford, A. Scott Rood

Journal of Tourism Insights

This paper details successful efforts undertaken, at a Midwest (U.S.) university to address the significant lack of cannabis-centered academics within U.S. higher education. The foci of this paper for interdisciplinary cannabis curricula at the subject university is three-fold: student-centered, industry-centered, and community-centered. The curricular innovation was designed, presented, and now implemented, in a form of stackable credentialling; through which students develop fundamental knowledge about cannabis (badge in ‘cannabis operations’), apply that knowledge in a holistic way to local regions (certificate in ‘cannabis & community planning’), and culminate their learning experience with advanced topics and experiential learning components via an academic …

Puerto Rico Imperatives To Enact Energy And Climate Justice, Ruth Santiago, Hilda Llorens, Catalina M. De Onis

University of Montana Staff Publications

In the days and months following Hurricanes Irma’s and Maria’s landfall in Puerto Rico, photos and videos of the catastrophic impacts were broadcast throughout the world. These successive hurricanes in September 2017 tore down the electric grid, many of the wires, poles, and towers, and flooded substations. The almost total lack of electric service for 3.2 million people sent shockwaves throughout the archipelago as outside observers watched, horrified by the collapse of almost all other critical services dependent on electricity. Disrupted services included water supply and treatment, medical services, education, communications, and economic and business transactions. The decimated centralized transmission …

Healthcare-Seeking Behavior In A Toxic Landscape: Investigating Cancer Care Awareness In Louisiana's Cancer Alley, Moumita Roy

LSU Master's Theses

The fossil fuel and petrochemical sector in the Louisiana region, known as "Cancer Alley," has a devastating impact not only on the environment but also on the health and lives of the local population. Extreme pollution from the petrochemical industry not only elevated cancer rates in this region but also maternal, reproductive, and newborn health harms, respiratory diseases, and other complex health issues. This study examined the healthcare-seeking behavior of some residents and their awareness of cancer facilities within a 100-mile radius of their homes and identified key challenges, such as proximity of cancer care and accessibility, financial constraints, and …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Spiritual Practices Of Simplicity Among Emerging Adults, Falon Opsahl Barton Oct 2024

A Qualitative Exploration Of Spiritual Practices Of Simplicity Among Emerging Adults, Falon Opsahl Barton

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

This article explores how emerging adults (18 to 29‐year‐olds) integrate pro‐environmental behaviors and spiritual practices of simplicity. First, this article synthesizes the research on emerging adulthood, including what it is, how they experience and express their spirituality, and their emotional and practical behaviors in response to the climate crisis. Then, this article explores how a small sample of Western Protestant emerging adults practice pro‐environmental simplicity in their daily lives. As a result of integrating spiritual practices that focus on simplicity and pro‐environmental behaviors into their spiritual expressions, emerging adults experience profound spiritual formation and a meaningful way of participating in …

Breathing Inequality? Income, Ethnicity And Pm2.5 Exposure In Bologna, Italy, Alessandra Drigo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This study addresses the presence of an environmental justice issue along the dimensions of income and ethnicity in the urban context of Bologna, Italy. Among other Italian cities, Bologna has historically had a left-leaning political tendency and has made considerable substantial efforts to address social issues extensively. This makes it a useful cross-section dataset links gridded PM2.5 concentration data at 0.01°x0.01° resolution with census demographic characteristics and income per capita information for the year 2011. This study presents two main findings. i) It confirms the existence of an environmental justice gap, which affects vulnerable segments of the population along both …

Relocating Justice, Ruhan Sidhu Nagra Oct 2024

Relocating Justice, Ruhan Sidhu Nagra

Duke Law Journal

Managed retreat—the planned relocation of people facing imminent climate threats—is an inevitable part of future climate adaptation in the United States. Given that Black, Brown, and low-income communities are disproportionately vulnerable to climate hazards, managed retreat has significant justice implications. This Article explores what I call an apparent “justice paradox”—two “justice problems” with managed retreat that seem to point to opposite solutions. On the one hand, managed retreat can be inaccessible to marginalized communities, many of whom lack the resources to successfully navigate the relocation process. This justice problem suggests that decision-makers should prioritize managed retreat for marginalized communities since …

An All-Hazards Approach To Us Military Base Camp Site Selection, Mark Corson, Christopher Jasperro Oct 2024

An All-Hazards Approach To Us Military Base Camp Site Selection, Mark Corson, Christopher Jasperro

The Geographical Bulletin

Throughout history, military forces have built encampments and bases in hostile areas to defend and sustain themselves while on campaign. The predominant criteria for site selection were and continue to be tactical and logistical concerns. This article applies a geographic perspective to US military base camp site selection in contingency operations such as Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, or Afghanistan. In particular, it argues that an all-hazards approach should be employed in the site selection process, and that the all-hazards approach be an integral part of the planning phase of base camp development and emerging site selection doctrine. This project begins with …

Starting in the 1970s, individuals, businesses and the public have increasingly benefited from policies prohibiting smoking indoors, saving thousands of lives and billions of dollars in healthcare expenditures. Smokefree policies to protect against secondhand smoke exposure, however, do not fully protect the public from the persistent and toxic chemical residues from tobacco smoke (also known as thirdhand smoke) that linger in indoor environments for years after smoking stops. Nor do these policies address the economic costs that individuals, businesses and the public bear in their attempts to remediate this toxic residue. We discuss policy-relevant differences between secondhand smoke and thirdhand …

Neighborhood Effects On Acute Pediatric Asthma: Race, Greenspace, And Pm2.5, Elizabeth Wesley, Nathaniel A. Brunsell, David R. Rahn, Jarron M. Saint Onge, Natalie J. Kane, Kevin F. Kennedy

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Urbanization produces spatially variable landscapes where climatic, environmental, and social systems interact in complex ways that affect public health. Environmental exposure along with the associated health risks are unevenly distributed and communities of color are often disproportionately affected by poor health outcomes. Acute pediatric asthma is the most common chronic condition of childhood in developed nations and is especially prevalent in minority and low-income children. In this study, we analyze the spatial variability of neighborhood-level acute pediatric asthma emergency department (ED) visits across the Kansas City Metro Area. Using Bayesian negative binomial regression, we describe the relationships and interactions between …
