Warmonger Attack: A Novel Attack Vector In Serverless Computing, Junjie Xiong, Mingkui Wei, Zhuo Lu, Yao Liu Jan 2024

Warmonger Attack: A Novel Attack Vector In Serverless Computing, Junjie Xiong, Mingkui Wei, Zhuo Lu, Yao Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We debut the Warmonger attack, a novel attack vector that can cause denial-of-service between a serverless computing platform and an external content server. The Warmonger attack exploits the fact that a serverless computing platform shares the same set of egress IPs among all serverless functions, which belong to different users, to access an external content server. As a result, a malicious user on this platform can purposefully misbehave and cause these egress IPs to be blocked by the content server, resulting in a platform-wide denial of service. To validate the effectiveness of the Warmonger attack, we conducted extensive experiments over …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Surfactants have been widely used to alter the wettability of carbonate rocks from oil-wetness to water-wetness and enhanced oil recovery. One of primary methods implemented in filed applications for enhanced oil recovery is surfactant huff-puff. Currently, a large number of surfactant treatments are conducted in laboratories prior to field applications to optimize the design of surfactant huff-puff, test the performance of surfactants, and minimize failure risk. This process is time-consuming since a treatment could last from several days to more than 300 days. Moreover, a fraction of treatments could not improve oil recovery as reported in the literature. In this …

Volo Foundation Lecture: Science, Free Speech, And Public Choice, Bret Stephens

FIU Law Review

In an era where science, free speech, and public choice clash, the historical unity between these pillars, as envisioned by America's founding fathers, is obscured. Examining Thomas Jefferson's reverence for Bacon, Locke, and Newton, reveals a past where reason and freedom intertwined. However, contemporary challenges, epitomized by the pandemic response, illustrate a divergence. Amidst censorship and expert dominance, the vital role of public scrutiny emerges. Acknowledging the fallibility of experts and embracing free speech as essential for reasoned discourse becomes imperative. To restore the balance, humility from scientific institutions, a renewed appreciation for free speech, and public courage are necessary …

"Common But Differentiated Responsibilities” In The Paris Agreement, Henrique Schneider Jan 2024

"Common But Differentiated Responsibilities” In The Paris Agreement, Henrique Schneider

FIU Law Review

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, epitomizes a political approach to climate action, devoid of scientific oversight at its inception. This political nature underscores its essence, emphasizing action over guaranteed results. With a foundation in "common but differentiated responsibilities" (CBDR), nations set diverse climate goals based on unique circumstances. However, this diversity complicates policy alignment and raises challenging questions, such as the feasibility of carbon border adjustments and intellectual property dilution. Analyzing CBDR within the Paris Agreement framework unveils its evolution, shaped by political negotiations and national actions. This study delves into the intricate interplay between politics, policy, and international …

Entre La Espada Y La Pared: Obstacles To U.S. Investment In Cuba, Thais Lopez

FIU Law Review

Investing in Cuba poses several obstacles to U.S. investors. Cuba’s new Law of Foreign Investment and new Constitution do not provide remedies or protections against the state’s takings of private property or imprisonment without charge. On the U.S. side, Title III of the Helms-Burton Act has made U.S. investors the most vulnerable to claims worth billions in damages under the Act.

A Vehicle-Bridge Interaction Model Considering Contact Patch Size And Vehicle Self-Generated Excitation – A Theoretical Study, Zhenhua Shi, Yahya M. Mohammed, Nasim Uddin, Genda Chen Jan 2024

A Vehicle-Bridge Interaction Model Considering Contact Patch Size And Vehicle Self-Generated Excitation – A Theoretical Study, Zhenhua Shi, Yahya M. Mohammed, Nasim Uddin, Genda Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an improved theoretical damped single-axle vehicle-bridge dynamic interaction model to consider the effect of the contact patch size and motor-induced vehicle excitation. The contact patch issue is critical as it determines the minimum time step for simulation and maximum identifiable frequency, while the inclusion of the motor-induced vehicle excitation benefits the design of autonomous self-driven rather than towed vehicles. Estimations of the contact patch size for both the pneumatic tire and solid wheel scenarios are discussed. The contact patch responses, which degenerate into contact point responses when the contact patch size is assumed to be infinitely small, …

The Hydration, Microstructure, And Mechanical Properties Of Vaterite Calcined Clay Cement (Vc³), Yaqiang Li, Yue Li, Hongyan Ma, Jiaqi Li

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Limestone (calcite) calcined clay cement (LC3) is a promising low-CO2 binder, but the low activity of calcite cannot compensate the reduction in clinker factor, resulting in low one-day strength and limiting its broad applications. As recent carbon capture and utilization technologies allow scalable production of vaterite, a more reactive CaCO3 polymorph, we overcome the challenge by introducing vaterite calcined clay cement (VC3), inspired by the vaterite-calcite phase change. In the present study, VC3 exhibits higher compressive strengths and faster hydration than LC3. Compared to hydrated LC3, hydrated VC3 exhibits increased amount of hemi- and mono-carboaluminate formation and decreased amount of …

Performance Of Smart Shear Keys In Concrete Bridges Under Tsunami Loading: An Experimental Study, Haibin Zhang, Xinzhe Yuan, Genda Chen, Pedro Lomonaco

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bridges have recently been exposed to an increasing number of natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis. These extreme events have resulted in transverse offsets, overturning moments, and even dropping-off of superstructures due to their weak connection to substructures. These outcomes are potentially prevented or mitigated by developing and deploying sliding, modular, adaptive, replaceable, and two-dimensional (SMART) shear keys as fuse elements between superstructures and substructures. The novelty of SMART shear keys is to enable an adaptive control of both the force and displacement of bridges under different types of loads. In this study, the performance of SMART shear keys …

Resolving Low-Clarity Text Input On Mobile Platforms, Zheer Xu Jan 2024

Resolving Low-Clarity Text Input On Mobile Platforms, Zheer Xu

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Text input constitutes a critical and frequent interaction with mobile computing devices. However, the experiences on mobile text interfaces remain significantly inferior in terms of speed and accuracy, as input noise, jitteriness, and spatial variability in human input signals result in reduced clarity of the input. This hinders the ability of the text input system to accurately transform them into the intended text. The compact form factors of modern mobile and wearable devices further complicate precise input, as the input space is highly limited. The inadequate clarity of human input on these devices, therefore, necessitates precisely formatted input from users, …

The Centennial Of Meyer And Pierce: Parents’ Rights, Gender-Affirming Care, And Issues In Education, Ira C. Lupu

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper was prepared for a Symposium marking the centennial of the Supreme Court’s decisions in Meyer v. Nebraska (1923) and Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925). At their inception, Meyer and Pierce reflected constitutional principles of economic freedom and parental control of their children’s education. Part I traces the path of ideas put in motion by Meyer and Pierce. These include the decline of their economic freedom component and the broader grounding of their doctrines of parental authority. Eventually, the chameleon-like legacy of Meyer and Pierce stretched to include First Amendment concerns of religious exercise and knowledge acquisition, as …

Review Essay: Marta Cartabia And Nicola Lupo, “The Constitution Of Italy: A Contextual Analysis” (2023), Francesca Bignami

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this review essay, I showcase aspects of Marta Cartabia’s and Nicola Lupo’s The Constitution of Italy that set it apart from standard texts and that make it an excellent resource on Italian government and public law. Then, I focus on two elements of the Italian constitutional order that are discussed in the book and that are unique when seen in comparative context—the non-hierarchical organization of the Italian judiciary and the salience of social rights. I argue that future research on these aspects of the Italian case could make an important contribution to cutting-edge debates in the field of comparative …

Modeling Fee Shifting With Computational Game Theory, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2024

Modeling Fee Shifting With Computational Game Theory, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

While modern mathematical models of settlement bargaining in litigation generally seek to identify perfect Bayesian Nash equilibria, previous computational models have lacked game theoretic foundations. This article illustrates how computational game theory can complement analytical models. It identifies equilibria by applying linear programming techniques to a discretized version of a cutting-edge model of settlement bargaining. This approach makes it straightforward to alter some assumptions in the model, including that the evidence about which the parties receive signals is irrelevant to the merits and that the party with a stronger case on the merits also has better information. The computational model …

China's Anti-Secession Law: Background, Legal Significance, And Recent Developments, Donald C. Clarke Jan 2024

China's Anti-Secession Law: Background, Legal Significance, And Recent Developments, Donald C. Clarke

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

What is the significance of China’s 2005 Anti-Secession Law (ASL) specifically as a legal document? In other words, how if at all is it different for any practical purpose from a policy announcement? Would anything be different if it did not exist at all? What was the point of having the National People’s Congress issue it instead of, for example, the State Council (whose Taiwan Affairs Office in 2022 issued a White Paper)? What was the point of calling it a law, instead of something like “An Announcement to Taiwanese Compatriots,” as the NPC Standing Committee had done in 1979? …

Guardians Of Ethics For The Profession Of Arms: Judge Advocates Assisting Commanders To Choose The Harder Right Over The Easier Wrong, Lisa M. Schenck

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article provides an explanation of the unique and critical role of members of the Service Judge Advocate General’s Corps, not only as attorneys providing legal services to commanders, staff, personnel, and family members, but also as Guardians of Ethics for the military, the Profession of Arms. Moreover, military lawyers are key leaders who are responsible to lead or guide others to the right ethical decision. And when Judge Advocates are not present at the table to provide sage, educated, measured, advice—or fail to speak up and address potential ethical issues that arise or they are ignored— military leaders do …

Disability, Race, And Immigration: The Intersectional Impact Of Policing, Tania N. Valdez Jan 2024

Disability, Race, And Immigration: The Intersectional Impact Of Policing, Tania N. Valdez

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Law enforcement officers commonly must respond to situations in which a person is experiencing acute symptoms of a mental illness. Yet from the first moment of police involvement, these community members face the possibility of negative outcomes. Consequences include officers' use of excessive force leading to injury or death, criminal arrest and prosecution that results in deprivation of liberty, separation from the community, and the creation of a permanent criminal record that affects other rights.

Although potential violence and criminalization are important reasons to avoid relying on police during mental health events, another key consideration is often ignored in the …

Copyright And The Training Of Human Authors And Generative Machines, Robert Brauneis Jan 2024

Copyright And The Training Of Human Authors And Generative Machines, Robert Brauneis

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

There are many limitations on copyright of which human authors can and do take advantage as they are learning. However, there is no blanket fair use immunity for use of copyrighted works to educate human authors, even though those authors typically do not go on to create substantially similar works. Human authors typically end up paying, directly or indirectly, for most of the copyrighted works from which they learn. Should it be different when human beings use copyrighted works to train generative AI models? This article concludes that it should not, in spite of two prominent arguments to the contrary. …

The Overton Window And Privacy Enforcement, Alicia Solow-Niederman Jan 2024

The Overton Window And Privacy Enforcement, Alicia Solow-Niederman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

On paper, the Federal Trade Commission’s consumer protection authority seems straightforward: the agency is empowered to investigate and prevent unfair or deceptive acts or practices. This flexible and capacious authority, coupled with the agency’s jurisdiction over the entire economy, has allowed the FTC to respond to privacy challenges both online and offline. The contemporary question is whether the FTC can draw on this same authority to curtail the data-driven harms of commercial surveillance or emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.

This Essay contends that the legal answer is yes and argues that the key determinants of whether an agency like the …
