Carbon–carbon composites are carbon fibers reinforced with carbon matrix and are classified as advanced materials well suited for high-temperature structural applications. Carbon–carbon composites are characterized by maintaining excellent mechanical properties and structural stability at high temperatures and have been used in aerospace application as nozzles, heatshields, and leading edge. However, conventional methods to manufacture carbon–carbon composites are costly and time-consuming. the aim of this work is to develop a method for creating additively manufactured (AM) carbon–carbon composites using a high-pressure re-infiltration process. in doing so, less infiltration cycles are required compared to a low-pressure re-infiltration, reducing the total manufacture time. …
An Equivalent Coil Model Of A Wireless Power Transfer System Including Eddy Loss, Hanyu Zhang, Daryl G. Beetner
An Equivalent Coil Model Of A Wireless Power Transfer System Including Eddy Loss, Hanyu Zhang, Daryl G. Beetner
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A wireless power transfer (WPT) system suffers from eddy loss if a conductive object is placed near the coupling coil. In this paper, a 3-coil equivalent circuit model for the coupling coil in a WPT system is proposed for analyzing the eddy loss due to nearby conductors. This model uses a third coil with inductive coupling to the original transmitting and receiving coils to model the eddy loss. The proposed model was validated by comparing the Z-parameters with a full-wave simulation and showing good correlation over the frequency of interest, where the traditional 2-coil model fails. The 3-coil model is …

A Model For Corona Streamer Propagation On Glass During An Air Discharge, Zhekun Peng, Jianchi Zhou, Darryl Kostka, David Pommerenke, Daryl G. Beetner
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Corona discharge to a glass surface is challenging to model due to a poorly understood air and surface ionization process. A modeling methodology based on the transmission line modeling (TLM) approach is proposed to simulate the streamer propagation process. The time-changing corona streamer resistance is estimated using the Rompe and Weizel spark model. The streamer is represented using small segments consisting of the arc resistance, per unit length (PUL) capacitance of the streamer, PUL inductance, a switch representing streamer formation, and a surface discharge gap voltage representing the voltage drop caused by ions within the streamer length. The propagation of …

The piezoelectric effect will cause the multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) to deform in several directions. When it is soldered to the printed circuit board (PCB) and powered on, these deformations will exert a certain force on the PCB, causing the PCB to vibrate and emit acoustic noise at a certain frequency. Determining the dominant deformation direction that MLCC can affect the PCB is relevant and important for efficiently extracting the equivalent source of noise. This paper provides a method to determine the dominant deformation direction produced by MLCC, explores it through experimental measurement results, and finally provides a conclusion to …

This paper explores a novel approach to model strategies for flattening wrinkled cloth learning from humans. A human participant study was conducted where the participants were presented with various wrinkle types and tasked with flattening the cloth using the fewest actions possible. A camera and Aruco marker were used to capture images of the cloth and finger movements, respectively. The human strategies for flattening the cloth were modeled using a supervised regression neural network, where the cloth images served as input and the human actions as output. Before training the neural network, a series of image processing techniques were applied, …

Kinetic Simulations Of Dust Grain Charging Near Surfaces Under Various Plasma Conditions, David Lund, Daoru Han
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents fully kinetic numerical investigations of the charging of spherical and irregular shaped dust grains in multiple configurations utilizing the Parallel Immersed-Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell Dusty (PIFE-PIC-D) framework. The simulations account for both surface charging and in-depth charging of the dust grains immersed in various ambient plasma conditions near a floating or biased surface. PIFE-PIC-D explicitly resolves the geometrical and material properties (permittivity and photoelectron emissions) of each individual dust grain. PIFE-PIC-D will model self-consistently the unsteady and stochastic charging of grains directly from the deposition of electrons and ions onto them. PIFE-PIC-D will also simulate the charging of irregular-shaped …

Because of recent advancements in space technologies, easier and more economical access to space, and an increase in commercial interests, the near-Earth space environment has witnessed an exploding number of objects being put into orbit. In particular, the low Earth orbit (LEO) region is at an increased risk of orbital collisions from large satellite constellation projects. Thus, monitoring LEO objects for space situational awareness and space traffic management has become increasingly imperative. In this paper, we use the concept of limited-CDF (cumulative distribution function) surface and mutual information for designing sensor tasking algorithms focusing on regular observation of known catalog …

Hot rolling processes have been extensively used to produce round bars by reducing the cross-sectional area of continuously cast steel. The current trend toward increasing productivity often requires a more aggressive reduction per pass. Establishing safe and optimized hot rolling parameters must be determined to avoid damage while deforming the specific steel composition. Understanding the damage mechanism during the metal forming process is vital for product quality. Herein, a combined experimental and simulation approach is developed to track the evolution potential damage during hot bar rolling. Hot tension tests are conducted on as-cast vanadium micro alloyed 15V38 steel at different …
L∞ Bounds For Transient Growth In Repetitive And Iterative Learning Control Systems, Douglas A. Bristow, John R. Singler
L∞ Bounds For Transient Growth In Repetitive And Iterative Learning Control Systems, Douglas A. Bristow, John R. Singler
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper revisits the problem of large transient growth in Iterative Learning Control (ILC) and Repetitive Process Control (RPC) systems. In ILC and RPC problems a process is repeated iteratively, with new control calculations occurring in between each iteration. Large transient growth refers to the propensity of some control algorithms to grow error exponentially before eventually converging. While robust monotonic convergence algorithms (in which monotonic convergence is guaranteed usually in exchange for a small loss in performance) have largely eliminated the concern for large transient growth in ILC, similar results cannot always be obtained in RPC. The emergence of additive …

Equilibrium Gibbs' free energy calculations were used to determine metal segregation trends between boride and carbide solid solutions containing two metals that are relevant to dual phase high entropy ceramics. The model predicted that Ti had the strongest tendency to segregate to the boride phase followed by Zr, Nb, Mo, V, Hf, and Ta, which matches experimental results of measured compositions. The ratio of a metal in the carbide phase to the content of the same metal in the corresponding metal boride had a linear trend with the change in standard Gibbs' free energy of reaction for a metal carbide …

The brittleness and limited plastic deformation of ceramics restrict their applications. In this work, the effects of pristine (CNTP), functionalized (CNTOH, CNTCOOH) and silanized MWCNTs on the mechanical properties of Silicon Carbide obtained by pyrolyzing polycarbosilane SMP-10 were studied. Functionalization with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy was analyzed through dispersion stability, zeta potential, and EDS analyses, revealing increased silicon content and colloidal stability in silanized MWCNTs. However, silanized MWCNTs led to reduced mechanical properties in composites, while untreated MWCNTs (CNTP, CNTOH, CNTCOOH), showed a substantial increase in modulus by 74.2 %, 86.9 %, and 30.5 %, respectively. The observed enhancement in mechanical properties exceeded …

FDCS were analyzed in the kinetic energy release (KER) ranges 0 to 2.1 eV and 4 to 7 eV for two different molecular orientations. In the latter range, dissociation is dominated by electronic excitation to the 2pπu state. Here, we observed two-center interference for an orientation in the plane perpendicular to the initial beam axis and parallel to the transverse momentum transfer. The interference pattern is afflicted with a constant phase shift of π. In the range KER=0 to 2.1 eV, dissociation is …

Resource Scheduling Catering to Real-Time IoT Services in a Serverless-Enabled Edge Network is Particularly Challenging Owing to the Workload Variability, Strict Constraints on Tolerable Latency, and Unpredictability in the Energy Sources Powering the Edge Devices. This Paper Proposes a Framework LEASE that Dynamically Schedules Resources in Serverless Functions Catering to Different Microservices and Adhering to their Deadline Constraint. to Assist the Scheduler in Making Effective Scheduling Decisions, We Introduce a Priority-Based Approach that Offloads Functions from over-Provisioned Edge Nodes to Under-Provisioned Peer Nodes, Considering the Expended Energy in the Process Without Compromising the Completion Time of Microservices. for Real-World Implementations, …
