Music And Narrative Memory, Maxwell Kayser
Music And Narrative Memory, Maxwell Kayser
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Music can overlap with many activities, but its effects on our memory for those activities are not fully understood. The experiments here investigated the effects of calm and intense background music on both memory and narrative transportation (the feeling that one is absorbed into the events of a narrative) during reading. Participants read narratives either in silence or with background music and completed a measure of narrative transportation (Transportation Scale-Short Form; Appel et al., 2015). Participants were then tested, either in silence or with background music, on memory for explicit details and inferences from the narrative. Across both experiments, memory …
Peer Led Learning Curriculum On Sexual Education, Hannah Harris
Peer Led Learning Curriculum On Sexual Education, Hannah Harris
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Sexual education is a necessary course that teaches students about health and safety. There have been many obstacles that educators have faced in implementing into schools. This has led to a statewide division in how the topic is taught. Because of this, gaps in students' knowledge can lead to harmful practices or actions. A comprehensive sex ed, or CSE, needs to be utilized across the United States as this curriculum focuses on empirically based evidence and facts. Having an unbiased curriculum will improve student’s knowledge and help prevent parent backlash. However, sex ed needs to embrace peer-led learning as many …

Self-Regulated Learning Through Self-Concordant Goals, Social Modeling And Sustainability Focus, Oana Mandrutiu-Iancu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Research has shown that when students spend time reflecting and autonomously selecting their college goals, they show high intrinsic motivation, low extrinsic motivation and improvement in emotional and social adjustment over the first several months of college. Despite of this, it is estimated that 77% of first- and second-year students are undecided on their major and many remain undecided as they transition into their junior and senior year. Moreover, in education settings the primary emphasis is on academic success, but focusing solely on academic goals is limiting. As learning is inherently social, academic and social domains cannot be separated, while …
Implicit Bias: Principal Leadership And Social Justice, Tamra Lynn Brooks
Implicit Bias: Principal Leadership And Social Justice, Tamra Lynn Brooks
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Benson & Ellison (2017) contend that among the first steps toward addressing a more diverse school and student body is an augmentation of cultural competency leadership, which begins with principals knowing how to address their own implicit biases as leaders in their schools. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore different ways principals address implicit biases within their schools and what is needed to help them address implicit bias with teachers and staff. The study addressed two research questions: “What do school principals perceive as biases among teachers and staff?” and “What do principals perceive is needed …
Symptom Network Comparisons Between Pre- And Post-Concussion, Christine Salva
Symptom Network Comparisons Between Pre- And Post-Concussion, Christine Salva
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Increased awareness about the short and long-term negative outcomes associated with sport-related concussion has resulted in active monitoring of cognitive and symptom profiles of athletes using a variety of assessments. The traditional approach to interpretation of cognitive and symptom measures has been based on a latent construct framework where domain scores reflecting latent constructs representing cognitive or symptom domains are collected at baseline and then compared to those obtained after concussion during the acute injury phase, with repeated additional assessments to determine when cognitive and symptom alterations have resolved. More recently, network approaches have been used to examine changes in …

Hildegard Of Bingen’S Embryology: Enabling Women’S Reproductive Power Without Seed, Minji Lee
Hildegard Of Bingen’S Embryology: Enabling Women’S Reproductive Power Without Seed, Minji Lee
Department of Religion Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This paper examines Hildegard of Bingen’s embryological theory within the intricate landscape of medieval medicine and religion. It situates Hildegard’s understanding of conception within ongoing historical debates surrounding the roles of male and female reproductive substances, particularly the concept of seed or semen. By analyzing her conceptual framework against prevailing classical and medieval reproductive theories, the research illuminates Hildegard’s distinctive contribution to understanding conception as a holistic bodily process. Classical embryological discourse predominantly oscillated between Aristotle’s one-seed theory—which positioned men as sole generative agents—and Galen’s two-seed theory, which marginally acknowledged female reproductive participation. While technically aligning with Aristotelian principles by …

Exploratory Learning In Two Modalities: Tabular Vs Graphical., Lianda Velic
Exploratory Learning In Two Modalities: Tabular Vs Graphical., Lianda Velic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In traditional educational settings, an instructor delivers a lecture prior to providing students a practice activity. Exploratory learning reverses this order to encourage active learning and engagement, typically improving learning outcomes. However, more research is needed in order to determine how to optimally design exploratory learning materials, and how differences in such design impact learning processes and outcomes. The current study investigated the impact of instructional order and activity modality type (tabular or graphical) on learning outcomes. Undergraduate students (N=252) were taught the statistical concept of consistency and the formula to compute standard deviation. In the instruct-first condition, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States spends more on health care than any other country, and Medicare accounted for nearly one-quarter of total personal health care spending in 2019. Waste within the health care system in the United States is estimated to represent approximately 25% of total U.S. health care expenditures. Low value care includes health care services that provide little or no benefit to patients, have potential to cause harm, incur unnecessary costs to patients, or waste limited healthcare resources. Low value care is estimated to represent roughly 10% of total health care waste, or between $75.7 billion and $101.2 billion dollars …

Objectives: To systematically review evidence on the prevalence of the JAK2V617F (JAK2) mutation and polycythemia vera (PV) among all blood donors, focusing on those with elevated hematocrit. Although blood donors are generally healthy, considering a preclinical stage of myeloproliferative neoplasm, especially in those with polycythemia, is crucial. Evidence on managing these donors is limited. Methods: We performed a literature search using EMBASE and MEDLINE from inception until August 2023, including studies on the prevalence of JAK2 mutation or PV among blood donors. Eligible studies examined blood donors in hospital or community settings, had a sample size of at least 20 …

Post-Thyroidectomy Hypoparathyroidism: A Clinical Surgical Dilemma, Saad M. Alqahtani
Saudi Medical Journal
ABSTRACT Thyroid dysfunction directly affects human health and overall well-being; various approaches are available for the treatment of thyroid diseases, including conservative measures and surgical interventions. Despite advancements in conservative treatment, surgery remains the preferred option. Hypoparathyroidism is the primary cause of hospitalization after thyroidectomy, leading to cost-related concerns and a detrimental impact on patients’ overall quality of life. Postoperative hypoparathyroidism can result in hypocalcemia, and these are challenging conditions that must be identified promptly to prevent immediate and long-term complications. This article focused on the presentation, risk factors, and management of hypoparathyroidism to increase awareness of the risks associated …

Equitable Thriving: A Lifecourse Approach To Maternal And Child Health Justice, Yael Cannon
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Black women are at least three times more likely to die due to a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Grave racial disparities also abound in severe maternal morbidity, or significant unexpected health consequences of labor and delivery. The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion, has only further restricted reproductive healthcare options and raised concerns that these disparities will grow even starker. Black, Indigenous, and Latine infants and children also experience unjust—and avoidable—health inequities. As a general matter, people of color are sicker across their lifespans and die younger in …

Regulatory Approaches To Consumer Protection In The Financial Sector And Beyond: Toward A Smart Disclosure Regime?, Nydia Remolina Leon, Yvonne Ai-Chi Loh, David R. Hardoon
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Traditionally, consumer and data protection policies evolved from issues of consent and information disclosure. The purpose of these regulatory approaches is the protection of consumers by reducing some contracting failures, such as asymmetries of information and a lower bargaining power, especially in transactions involving complex issues such as financial products and sensitive personal data. In the past, regulators have responded to privacy and consumer protection by adopting what this paper refers to as an “imperfectly informed regime”, in which consumers do not receive full information about the risks associated with their decisions, even if they are still protected through a …
