Numerical Simulations On Rayleigh Taylor Instability For Co2 Sequestration In Saline Aquifers, Bhargavi Vandadu Dec 2024

Numerical Simulations On Rayleigh Taylor Instability For Co2 Sequestration In Saline Aquifers, Bhargavi Vandadu

Mechanical Engineering Theses

The density-driven convection appears promise for CO₂ storage, precise prediction on a reservoir size is problematic due to limited data availability. Changes in permeability impact flow patterns and the effectiveness of mixing processes. Permeability differences influence the sorts of density-driven mixing phenomena such as fingering and stable mixing. Improving CO₂ storage models is challenging due to the unpredictable nature of these processes. The study looks at the flow phenomena in which carbon dioxide with a lower viscosity displaces on heavier fluid water. Causes instability by producing finger-like structures at the gas-liquid interface. This study uses the species transport technique to …

Training Machine Learning Algorithms For The Transient Startup Of A Long-Life Modular Microreactor, Ahmad N. Shaheen Dec 2024

Training Machine Learning Algorithms For The Transient Startup Of A Long-Life Modular Microreactor, Ahmad N. Shaheen

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

There is an increasing interest in developing and deploying small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) and micro modular reactors (MMRs). They could be operated with minimal on-site personnel or remotely with a high degree of autonomy. This can be enabled through the use and application of Artificial Intelligence (AL) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and methods. The objective of the present work is to train machine learning algorithms for remote control mimicking the transient startup of the Very-Small, Long-LIfe, Modular (VSLLIM) microreactor. This walk-away safe microreactor design and a fully integrated transient model have been developed at the University of New …

A Kid's Guide To Infectious Disease, Abby Carroll Dec 2024

A Kid's Guide To Infectious Disease, Abby Carroll

Honors Theses

A Kid’s Guide to Infectious Disease is an educational illustrated book intended for young pediatric patients, ages three to five. This project was inspired by my personal interests, involvement at the University of Mississippi, and experience as a medical assistant. Over the past couple of years, I have had the opportunity to work as a medical assistant, interacting with many pediatric patients and their families at HealthPointe Primary Care. As a pre-physician assistant student studying biology, I was inspired to create a resource for these kids by both my classes at the University of Mississippi and my passion for pediatric …

My capstone project was an audio feature I produced to air on AudioFiles. My focus was on an Ecuadorian dance team called, Ayazamana, made up of Ecuadorian-American and immigrant dancers. With Trump’s incoming presidency there is a rising anti-immigrant sentiment and Ayazamana seeks to continue proudly sharing their culture and creating a safe space within the city that houses thousands of immigrants.

Big Tech To Utilize Nuclear Reactors For Powering Data Center Expansion And Fighting Climate Change, Raymond Depaul Dec 2024

Big Tech To Utilize Nuclear Reactors For Powering Data Center Expansion And Fighting Climate Change, Raymond Depaul

Capstones

Amazon is advancing its goal for carbon-free energy by investing in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) through partnerships with X-energy, Energy Northwest, and Dominion Energy. These compact nuclear reactors will provide clean energy to power Amazon’s data centers and other operations, with expected benefits for energy resilience and community jobs. The SMR projects will add substantial power capacity to regions like the Pacific Northwest and Virginia, supporting Amazon’s target of net-zero carbon operations by 2040. The current project looks into the adverse effects these agreement may have on the environment, and how big tech companies' historical environmental interactions may come into …

Eleven Are The Stars Of Joseph’S Dream; His Coat, Many Colors, Alexander B. Bloom

Capstones

At the Conservative synagogue where I attended Saturday school for part of my childhood in the 90s I recall the teachers’ reimagination of the popular Michael Jackson song “We Are the World,” taught to the seven and eight year-olds who were made to sing it in chorus at some holiday celebration that year.

“We are the Jews,” we bleated out, in concert, “We are the Chosen.”

From my place among them I remember the unsettled feeling I had, to consider my non-Jewish friends at school, teachers and babysitters who knew not of tefillin, my maternal grandparents in the pews of …

Do Clothes Make The Feminist?, Jiana N. Smith

Capstones

In September 2024, New York fashion brand Sandy Liang faced backlash online for its girlish style codes as part of a broader debate about trends that reinforced gender stereotypes, like tradwives, “girl dinner” and the coquette aesthetic. However, critics misjudge the brand, which is grounded not in internet trends but in the designer’s real-world experiences. In addition, thanks to the complex fashion landscape, no garment is inherently political but dependent on the wearer’s intentions and styling choices.

The Evidence Is In: Breast Implants Are Making People Sick Increasingly Women Find When They Have Their Implants Removed, Their Symptoms Improve—Or Disappear., Pamela J. Appea

Capstones

Over the years, breast implants have been associated with a wide range of health issues, including cancer and autoimmune diseases, but surprisingly these issues are not well known to the public. In 1992, health concerns led the FDA to halt the use of silicone gel breast implants for cosmetic surgeries, although implants containing saline remained available (it was during this period that the Oprah segment that Gmitro remembered ran on TV). In 2006, after more research, which some experts believe was insufficient, the FDA re-approved the use of silicone implants. In 2019, a novel “textured” breast implant manufactured …

Wherever it rains, it can flood. More inland homeowners who never expected to see their homes flood are finding themselves inundated by rain as climate change intensifies extreme storms and weather patterns. Many homeowners decide to buy homes not realizing that flooding isn’t limited to coastal areas, so they forego flood insurance coverage, leaving their biggest asset at risk.

Black Media’S Struggle To Survive, Truth Headlam

Capstones

The Lomax family got into the media business 13 years ago, just before it cratered for traditional editorial publications and radio stations.

The fall has been steep, especially for Black media. In 1978, when President Jimmy Carter announced an initiative to increase the number of radio stations owned by people of color, only about 1.2% – or 69 out of 8,196 – radio stations were minority owned. But after the Carter administration gave minority-run stations a boost, that number more than doubled to 182 radio stations owned by Black people alone by 1990.

Improving Food Security To Decrease Hypertension At An Urban Community Clinic, Christine S. Villalta

Master's Projects and Capstones

Diet and lifestyle changes have been proven to reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension, and a key dietary approach aligned with this recommendation is the DASH diet, which includes consuming fruits and vegetables. Food insecurity, defined as lacking enough safe, nutritious food to maintain an active and healthy life, is a growing crisis in the United States, affecting 13.5% of U.S. households in 2023. This is especially significant for those whose chronic disease management depends on the accessibility of healthy food. An urban community clinic implemented a Food Security Program to decrease food insecurity and reduce hypertension among their …
