Not Language Alone: Translation And Culture, Bienvenido Lumbera
Kritika Kultura
Rendering a literary work into another language requires more than plain profi- ciency in the original language of the piece. Culture and history are so meshed in language that translation requires the translator to delve into the context that went into the creation of the literary text. This paper is based on the work that went into the making of my translation into Tagalog of four plays coming from differ- ent countries and climes. The plays confronted me with four different cultural and historical contexts that required to be clarified to make the translations reasonably faithful to the original works.
Carlos Bulosan And A Collective Outline For Critical Filipina And Filipino Studies, Michael Viola, Valerie Francisco, Amanda Solomon Amorao
Carlos Bulosan And A Collective Outline For Critical Filipina And Filipino Studies, Michael Viola, Valerie Francisco, Amanda Solomon Amorao
Kritika Kultura
As an activist-scholar formation called the Critical Filipina and Filipino Studies Collective (CFFSC) we take the position that Carlos Bulosan is indispensable for an emerging multidisciplinary field that is equipped in defying the neoliberal onslaught against ethnic studies in the United States and the unbridled racism most evident in the ongoing US “wars of terrorism” that haunt people of color throughout the world. We take seriously Bulosan’s insight that “[I]f the writer has any significance, [s]he should write about the world in which [s]he lives: interpret his [her] time and envision the future through his [her] knowledge of historical reality” …
Manuel Blanco’S El Indio And The History Of A Rumor, Resil B. Mojares
Manuel Blanco’S El Indio And The History Of A Rumor, Resil B. Mojares
Kritika Kultura
The paper explores the social meanings that can be elicited from tracking the history of a rumor. It takes as its example the nineteenth-century apocryphal story of an Augustinian friar who labored for years on a treatise on the character of the Philippine native (indio) only to leave behind, upon his death, a book of blank pages. Tracing the origins and passage of the rumor and unpacking the various interpretations of the story, the paper demonstrates what can be gained from the study of rumors in Philippine history.
Beyond The Innocence Of Globalization: The Abiding Necessity Of Carlos Bulosan’S Anti-Imperialist Imagination, Tim Libretti
Beyond The Innocence Of Globalization: The Abiding Necessity Of Carlos Bulosan’S Anti-Imperialist Imagination, Tim Libretti
Kritika Kultura
This essay analyzes Carlos Bulosan’s writing in terms of the way he works to develop an aesthetic that comprehends and cognitively maps the repetitive dynamics of US and global colonial capitalism. More precisely, the essay examines how Bulosan’s aesthetic practice both grapples with the question of how an individual and collective consciousness can grasp the systemic processes that condition experience and also how it fosters that consciousness in the way it represents the relationships among experience, the larger class and colonial dynamics that produce that experience, and the ideological processes that intervene in our comprehension of those dynamics. In developing …
Organic And Multicultural Ways Of Reading Bulosan, John Streamas
Organic And Multicultural Ways Of Reading Bulosan, John Streamas
Kritika Kultura
This essay argues that students in introductory classes read America Is in the Heart more perceptively than most professional “multicultural” critics. Students’ indifference to the book’s genre, for example, allows them to see clearly the meaning and value of its Part One, and to read the closing paragraph not as a postmodern refusal of closure but as a step on the way toward reconciling “America” with the work of “becoming Filipino.” Such engagement with the book is an example of “organic” reading.

The Manong’S “Songs Of Love”: Gendered And Sexualized Dimensions Of Carlos Bulosan’S Literature And Labor Activism, Amanda Solomon Amorao
Kritika Kultura
This article takes the 2013 passage of California Assembly Bill 123, which mandates instruction on the Filipino contribution to the state’s farm workers movement in public education curriculum, as an occasion to analyze the gendered and sexualized dimensions of Carlos Bulosan’s literature and labor activism. The article considers the texts and contexts of America is in the Heart and Bulosan’s short story “As Long as the Grass Shall Grow” to demonstrate how Bulosan’s materialist, dialectical analysis also involves an incisive critique of the intersections of class, race, gender, and sexuality. As Bulosan narrates the proletariat struggles of the manong generation, …
Carlos Bulosan On Writing: The Role Of Letters, Marilyn C. Alquizola, Lane Ryo Hirabayashi
Carlos Bulosan On Writing: The Role Of Letters, Marilyn C. Alquizola, Lane Ryo Hirabayashi
Kritika Kultura
Two themes from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s study, Kafka Toward a Minor Literature, serve as an inspiration for this rumination on Carlos Bulosan’s 1955 letter to Florentino B. Valeros about writing and the responsibilities of the writer. Because Bulosan was an inherently political writer, his correspondence is part-and-parcel of his writing machine, inclusive of his poetry, short stories, novels, and expository essays. In this, Bulosan’s case is parallel to that of Kafka. In contradistinction to Kafka, however, Bulosan’s letters are not easily categorized in terms of thematics such as those Deleuze and Guattari identify in the cases of Kafka …

Writers And Exile: Carlos Bulosan And Dolores Stephens Feria, Monica Feria
Kritika Kultura
This paper explores the links between two writers in exile – Carlos Bulosan, a Filipino migrant in the United States, and Dolores Stephens Feria, an American migrant in the Philippines. Its aim is to gather more insight into the “condition of exile” as a framework for understanding writers and literary traditions. For the author, being the daughter of Dolores, this is both a personal and academic exploration.

Excavating The Bulosan Ruins: What Is At Stake In Re-Discovering The Anti-Imperialist Writing In The Age Of Us Global Terrorism?, E. San Juan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
Based on research in the unpublished papers of Sanora Babb at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas, this essay uncovers new information about Bulosan’s relations with Sanora and her sister Dorothy Babb, the two American women who virtually “made” him into a writer. Given his intimacy with both women, active in leftwing and Communist Party activities in Los Angeles during the formative years of Bulosan’s life, as well as his association with leftist union leaders in Seattle, Bulosan’s radical affiliations are no longer in doubt, even without FBI documentation. Apocryphal Bulosan manuscripts such as All the Conspirators are bound …
Translation And The Problem Of Realism In Philippine Literature In English, J. Neil C. Garcia
Translation And The Problem Of Realism In Philippine Literature In English, J. Neil C. Garcia
Kritika Kultura
To the degree that Philippine literature in English is translational it cannot be realistic: realism is a signifying practice that presupposes a monocultural ground, upon which the “consensus” of representational fidelity can happen. And yet, much of the criticism of this literature, as produced by Filipinos themselves, has generally failed to take note of this crucial precondition, enacting a ruinous category mistake that, among other things, unwittingly confounds contemporary departures from the referential towards the “avant-garde” and/or antimimetic modes, as these are espoused by young Filipino poets and fictionists alike. Finally, this paper argues that the various literary practices encoded …

Performing Elusive Homecomings: Mobility, Embodiment, And Diasporic Filipino Youth, Martin F. Manalansan Iv
Kritika Kultura
The Filipino global diaspora has precipitated the circulation of embodied modes of identification and belonging. This paper focuses on the experiences of Filipino young people who were born and/or raised abroad, and who have returned to the Philippines to seek fame and economic mobility in the entertainment industry. These migrant hopefuls, unlike older counterparts, enact the material tensions and semantic contradictions that form part of popular discourse around life abroad. As such, institutional media practices and mass audience perceptions mirror such conditions and create shifting systems of valuation around such things as skin color, accent, and bodily comportment. To respond …

Performing Global At Intelstar: Figuring The Call Center On Manila Stage, Sir Anril Pineda Tiatco
Kritika Kultura
Set in Makati, the central business district of the National Capital Region, Welcome to IntelStar is a monodrama satirizing the call center industry in the Philippines. The performance is an exemplar in positioning a diasporic consequence of globalization vis-à-vis nationalism because it calls on a national sentiment to the extent that the play illustrates resistance to globalization’s economic and neoliberal attachments, often perceived as the destructive force of cultural diversity and uniqueness. In relation, the performance used a recurring trope in Philippine culture, which is called in the essay as the Americanization issue: the conception of the Filipino/a as a …

Beyond The Color Line: Intersectional Considerations In Chuah Guat Eng’S Fiction, Wai Chew Sim
Kritika Kultura
This essay argues that the work of Malaysian-Chinese author Chuah Guat Eng gives pause to the culturalism that dominates literary analysis. Articulated primarily through identity politics (the politics of recognition), culturalism’s self- understanding keeps at a distance other forms of social justice commitments including class struggle. However, Chuah spotlights their intersectionality in Malaysia and enjoins us to combine the two – to see the native population’s demand for economic parity and rural development as coterminous in some respects with the demands for recognition made by settler communities. In particular, Chuah’s Echoes of Silence (1994) points to the commensurability between socialist …

Reincarnation Of The Pinay Subaltern In Foreign Cinema, Taeyun Yu
Reincarnation Of The Pinay Subaltern In Foreign Cinema, Taeyun Yu
Kritika Kultura
This paper explores the paradoxical condition of postcolonial practice in South Korea1 that is, in many ways, complicit with dominant discourses such as nationalism, patriarchy, and global capitalism. In such a condition, what remains obscured is the voice of women that behooves us to hypothesize that the image of diasporic Filipino women in Korean cinema is predetermined by such complicity and is ideologically reincarnated as the subaltern. By conflating two postcolonial concepts, hybridity (Bhabha) and subalternity (Spivak), the study inspects the hypothesis through an analysis of two films that depict diasporic Pinay images: as entertainer in Yangil Choi’s All Under …
Phantom In Paradise: A Philippine Presence In Hollywood Cinema, Joel David
Phantom In Paradise: A Philippine Presence In Hollywood Cinema, Joel David
Kritika Kultura
The Philippines’ experience with its last foreign occupant, the US, resulted in an entire clutch of problematic “special relations” that, coupled with the country’s responses to the challenges of self-government, ultimately led to a global dispersal of the population, effectively turning the Philippines into the major Asian nation arguably most reliant on its citizens’ overseas remittances. This paper takes the position that diasporic Filipinos, for a variety of reasons starting with the effectiveness of maintaining unintrusive presences in alien cultures (including the acceptance of menial positions), have possibly developed and have enabled others to perceive them as silent and discreet …
Conflicting Counter-Hegemonies?: The Dramaturgy Of James Connolly And Sean O'Casey, James Moran
Conflicting Counter-Hegemonies?: The Dramaturgy Of James Connolly And Sean O'Casey, James Moran
Kritika Kultura
This paper examines the radicalism of James Connolly through the optic of theatre and performance. In particular, I test his only extant play-script—written shortly before his death—against the hostile critique of the dramatist Seán O’Casey. Despite the biographical similarities between these two men, O’Casey expressed deep disappointment with the climax of Connolly’s career as a labor agitator, organizer and revolutionary socialist, criticizing him for having travelled from socialism to nationalism, a journey which O’Casey had seemingly made in reverse. I offer a rereading of Connolly’s play to show that the situation is more complex than that envisaged by O’Casey. Although …
The Pitfalls Of Theatrical Consciousness, Lionel Pilkington
The Pitfalls Of Theatrical Consciousness, Lionel Pilkington
Kritika Kultura
Beginning with Frantz Fanon’s description of the problematic yet energizing effects of decolonization in The Wretched of the Earth (1961), this essay discusses the ways in which the theatre of modernity appears especially attractive to anti-colonial and post-colonial nationalist movements. This dominant and institutional model of theatre presents the colonized, not only as physically decorous, but as efficient and ready for work within a capitalist economy. The essay examines these propositions in relation to twentieth-century Irish theatre and drama. The second part of the essay examines the continuing centrality of performance and professional theatre within current discourses of neoliberalism and …
Carnivalesque Economies: Clowning And The Neoliberal Impasse, Barnaby King
Carnivalesque Economies: Clowning And The Neoliberal Impasse, Barnaby King
Kritika Kultura
In Colombia, clowns are proliferating and thriving, particularly in the context of neoliberal political economies prevailing since the mid-1990s. This paper explores some reasons why this might have occurred, as well as theorizing a two-way relationship of domination and resistance between clown practices and the current iteration of late capitalist global economies; what I call “carnivalesque economies.” While Bakhtin described clowns as “the constant, accredited representatives of the carnival spirit in everyday life out of carnival season,” the Colombian case suggests that their breaching of norms and violations of taboos are all too easily co-opted by governments, corporations, and institutions …
Performing The Peace Process And Performing The Past In The Irish Republican Commemoration, Paddy Hoey
Performing The Peace Process And Performing The Past In The Irish Republican Commemoration, Paddy Hoey
Kritika Kultura
In the years since the signing of the 1998 Good Friday Peace Agreement in Northern Ireland, there has been a structural realignment of the Irish republican activist milieu. The agreement delivered the end of armed struggle for the largest republican militant group, the Provisional IRA, and provided the opportunity for the electoral growth of its formerly subordinate political wing, Sinn Féin. The latter has become the dominant gatekeeper of republican identity, defining ideologically important performative rituals, like commemorations. During the period of the Peace Process, these rituals self-consciously eschewed armed and uniformed displays of military force that were central to …

Beyond Verbatim: Dramatizing The Search For Jean Mcconville, Bill Hopkinson, Jane Mcnulty
Kritika Kultura
In December 1972, as the bloodiest year of the conflict in Northern Ireland drew to its close, Jean McConville, a thirty-seven-year-old widowed mother of ten, was taken from her home in Belfast. A gang of men and women had entered the family home in the Divis Flats area of the city, and dragged Jean from her bath. In front of her terrified children, they bundled her into a van and took her away. Her family never saw her again. Her body was buried, some sixty odd miles from where she was taken, and for almost thirty years, the IRA denied …
Global Theme, Local Form: Testimony, Storytelling And Thailand: What's Love Got To Do With It?, Brian Desmond
Global Theme, Local Form: Testimony, Storytelling And Thailand: What's Love Got To Do With It?, Brian Desmond
Kritika Kultura
This essay is a reflection on the play, Thailand! What’s Love Got To Do With It?, by Máirtín de Cógáin and Brian Desmond, first produced in Cork, Ireland, in 2007. Thailand is both documentary play and metaphor: documentary in that it dramatizes an analysis of perspectives expressed by Irish sex tourists, and metaphor in the way that this analysis reflects the hysterical electioneering (from both government and media) during the 2007 Irish general election which saw Fianna Fáil’s Celtic Tiger government elected for a third term. A reflection on practice, this essay uses postcolonial and narrative theory to discuss Thailand …
Resistant Acts In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Ananda Breed
Resistant Acts In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Ananda Breed
Kritika Kultura
Performances of justice and human rights have served as international platforms for truth-telling and nation-building both in the aftermath of apartheid in South Africa, and genocide in the case of Rwanda. There are moments of overlap between actual court proceedings, which can in their own right be deemed as a performance, and the use of theatre for dialogic negotiations between past atrocities and present juridical systems for reconstruction.1 Within the messy context of post-conflict reconstruction, speech often falters. Articulations of identities and speech acts become disjointed between personal and collective memories and identities; but are forced into the construction of …
Marking "Austerity": Critique, Purpose And Perfromance, Victor Merriman
Marking "Austerity": Critique, Purpose And Perfromance, Victor Merriman
Kritika Kultura
This essay attempts to mark the current phase of capitalist neoliberalism, in order to create a space for articulation, in both senses of the word: there is a need both to articulate, as in to connect together ideas, events and their consequences, and to articulate, as in to voice the dynamics, contradictions, and injustices to which they give rise. As Shock Doctrine (Klein 2007), draped in Austerity’s mantle, enters the Common European Home, articulation as voice is an attempt to shatter, not silence, but the white noise generated by the mantra, “There Is No Alternative” (TINA). “Marking ‘Austerity’” sets out …
Reconstituting Histories Of Filipino Families With Chinese Ancestry: Methodology, Sources, And Relevance, Richard T. Chu
Reconstituting Histories Of Filipino Families With Chinese Ancestry: Methodology, Sources, And Relevance, Richard T. Chu
Kritika Kultura
Conducting one’s family history can enrich not only one’s own sense of self but also a nation’s history, especially in a country like the Philippines where oligarchic families have historically had an impact on the nation’s society, economy, and society. Many of these families are Tsinoy (Chinese-Filipino). Only few, however, have undertaken to reconstitute their histories. This essay discusses the various methods, sources, resources, and various frameworks (e.g., transnational, gendered) that one can use in the reconstitution of Tsinoy family histories. It also explains the significance that such family histories have in reframing and broadening our understanding of Philippine history.
