Fatphobia In Ballet: The Impact Of Organizational Practices On Body Size And Mental Health In American Ballet Companies, Ashley Chenery
Fatphobia In Ballet: The Impact Of Organizational Practices On Body Size And Mental Health In American Ballet Companies, Ashley Chenery
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
In American ballet companies, female dancers’ weights factor into decisions regarding hiring, casting, and promotions. However, female dancers are now using social media to speak out against fatphobic organizational practices. This paper analyzes personal accounts of size discrimination posted to Instagram and YouTube by high-profile veteran ballerinas of New York City Ballet. It also includes interviews with professional Gen Z ballerinas (in companies spanning the US), who discuss current fatphobic practices in companies and schools. Utilizing qualitative coding, this paper seeks to disarticulate thinness from artistry and to urge mental health as a priority in American ballet.

Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler
Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler
The Qualitative Report
Researchers have explored neurodiversity in terms of gender, gender identity and expression, masking, and more, yet the focus is often on neurodiversity as synonymous with autism. There remains a challenge to expand the body of neurodiversity research that is broader than autism. In my article, neurodiversity will be discussed as an element of the broad human condition, rather than a singular state or condition of impairment isolated to a portion of the population to delineate the paradigm based on neurological variations from medical and social models. This paper was designed to offer a “how to” for conducting research into neurodiversity …

The Importance Of Online Reviews In Developing Economies: Investigating The Perspective Of Consumers In North Africa, Kim Fröhnel, Asma Souissi, Rüdiger Zarnekow
The Importance Of Online Reviews In Developing Economies: Investigating The Perspective Of Consumers In North Africa, Kim Fröhnel, Asma Souissi, Rüdiger Zarnekow
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Online reviews play a crucial role in consumers’ online decision-making. While the importance of reviews for consumers in developed economies is well understood, little is known about their importance for consumers in developing economies. Due to different cultural dimensions like uncertainty avoidance, power distance, and individualism, consumers’ review reading and writing behavior in developing economies may differ from that in developed economies. Moreover, e-commerce in Africa will potentially grow in the coming years, raising the interest in understanding the key factors that influence consumers’ online decisions. To fill the research gap, we investigate online reviews’ importance for consumers in North …
Reconciling Modern Engineering Education With The Everyday Of Rural Schools And Youths, Malle R. Schilling, Jacob R. Grohs
Reconciling Modern Engineering Education With The Everyday Of Rural Schools And Youths, Malle R. Schilling, Jacob R. Grohs
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
We highlight the impacts of inequitable distributions of resources across geographies, structural challenges faced in partnerships with rural schools, and the importance of asset-based arguments to recognize and engage with systemic challenges. Precollege engineering education often focuses on engaging students and teachers hands-on with novel technologies and experiences that frequently distract from systemic inequities, particularly pertaining to place. Given national efforts in rural STEM education, there is a need to recognize important contextual factors influencing precollege engineering education. Through a lens of working with rural Appalachian schools, we hope to challenge practices and assumptions in precollege engineering education.

Brand Engagement Through Branded Mobile Apps Among The “Small-Screen” Gen, Waros Ngamsiriudom, Trang Phuc Tran, Russell K. Lemken
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Using the technology acceptance model, this study examines the combined impact of brand and technology on users' intention to continue using the branded app. A Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling with data from 454 experienced branded app users reveals two mechanisms: perceived usefulness has a favorable influence on the customer-brand connection, and perceived simplicity of use improves the customer's brand experience. Branded app interactions and experiences increase customer brand engagement, resulting in continued use. The study offers managerial insights for businesses looking to improve brand experiences using mobile technology, highlighting the importance of technology-driven marketing tactics and user-friendly branded …
Revisiting Articulation: An Approach To Listening And Thinking About Context In The Writing Center, William E. De Herder Iii
Revisiting Articulation: An Approach To Listening And Thinking About Context In The Writing Center, William E. De Herder Iii
The Writing Center Journal
This article offers articulation theory as a tool for listening and thinking about the culture in and around writing centers. After defining a method of articulation analysis that considers articulation, disarticulation, and rearticulation, as well as alignments, contradictions, and tensions within a context, the article performs an articulation analysis on contemporary writing center work. The analysis considers the writing center’s relationship to democracy, multiculturalism, neoliberalism, ethics, and social justice, as shaped by the Great Depression, the Vietnam War, and the 2008 financial crisis. The article concludes with a reflection on the results of the analysis and interventions that may open …

Why Were There No Jokes After The 2021 Meron Crowd Crush? On Israeli “Joking Relationships”, Tsafi Sebba-Elran
Why Were There No Jokes After The 2021 Meron Crowd Crush? On Israeli “Joking Relationships”, Tsafi Sebba-Elran
Jewish Folklore and Ethnology
The vast research literature on disaster jokes demonstrates that no calamity is too horrific to be followed by jokes that typically recontextualize traumatic events and channel the threatening voices that these events provoke. Why, then, did no jokes circulate after the deadliest civil disaster in Israel’s history, which occurred on Mount Meron during the Lag Ba’Omer celebrations in April 2021? Drawing upon the ethnographic concept of “joking relationships,” this essay documents representations of ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredim) in contemporary Israeli memes and explains the restraint that Israeli society shows toward this group with whom the Meron disaster is associated. …

“Let Me Tell You Some Stories, And You Will Record Them”: Dan Ben-Amos And The Study Of Jewish Folklore And Ethnology, Simon J. Bronner
Jewish Folklore and Ethnology
Dan Ben-Amos (1934–2023) was associated with groundbreaking work beginning during the 1960s on concepts of context and performance and the paradigm shift in folkloristics with his groundbreaking essay “Toward a Definition of Folklore in Context.” His odyssey from Israel to the United States, including formative experiences as a youth absorbing ideas about social reality and Jewish folklore as counterculture, has a profound influence on an equally profound shift in the understanding of Jewish experience as well as on the globalization of folkloristics as a discipline. In addition to interpreting his culminating work of the Folktales of the Jews series of …
The Impact Of Substrate Stiffness On Glycocalyx Expression In Cultured Endothelial Cells, Frances Green
The Impact Of Substrate Stiffness On Glycocalyx Expression In Cultured Endothelial Cells, Frances Green
All ETDs from UAB
Cardiovascular diseases associated with aging pose a significant public health challenge, with vascular stiffening playing a central role in disease progression. This research explores the complex relationship between vascular stiffening and endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction, focusing specifically on the endothelial glycocalyx (eGCX), a critical protective layer of proteins and glycans that covers endothelial cells (ECs). Our approach involves culturing lung microvascular ECs on various ratios of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates to simulate vascular stiffening conditions. The results of our study demonstrate an inverse correlation between substrate stiffness and eGCX expression, with softer substrates promoting eGCX integrity. Future research directions will incorporate …

“Feels A Lot Like Love” : Love-In(G) China In The Reform Era, Chang Qu
“Feels A Lot Like Love” : Love-In(G) China In The Reform Era, Chang Qu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This research examines the changing landscape of "love" in China during the economic reform since 1978. This landscape includes the drastic social transformations, the decentralisation of state control, and the intense processes of marketisation and privatisation of the economy. The thesis investigates the changing values, moral codes and forms of intimacy inscribed in "love", thus exploring the privatisation of the heart during China's economic reform. Although focusing on contemporary times, this research also examines the genealogy of "love" since the early moment of China's modernity, and explores the historical residuals that exist in today's emotional landscape. My research argues that …
Impact Of County-Level Urbanicity On Quality Of Life For People With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In A Rural State., Alyssa M. Smith, Allison Caudill
Impact Of County-Level Urbanicity On Quality Of Life For People With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In A Rural State., Alyssa M. Smith, Allison Caudill
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face challenges, such as decreased access to physical, environmental, and social health-related services that can negatively impact their overall quality of life (QoL). Additionally, people living in rural communities may experience geographic distancing and other factors, like decreased transportation and available housing, that contribute to increased isolation and decreased health outcomes, overall. It is important to consider the QoL of people with IDD living in these communities given the additional intersectional constraints of rurality and having an intellectual disability or other co-occurring conditions. A secondary data analysis reviewed closed and open-ended survey data …
Sadomasochistic Sensations: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Black Ontology, Embodiment, And Transcendence, Sam Forrey
Sadomasochistic Sensations: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Black Ontology, Embodiment, And Transcendence, Sam Forrey
Master's Theses
Over the past fifteen years, feminists have challenged the notion that sexual sadomasochism perpetuates racial and gender-based violence, and instead claim that the practice can be a powerful site to control and subvert oppression. In this thesis, I contribute to this growing discourse and argue that sensations experienced during practices of Black sexual sadomasochism and attention to the feelings and affects that arise from them can be used to mediate Black being in a violently antiblack United States. Through applications of Black feminist thought, Black anti-humanism, and phenomenology, I claim that antiblack oppression denies Black people the experience of tactile …

Invasive Species Common Names: Working Towards More Inclusive Invasive Species Education And Outreach, Megan M. Weber, Angela Gupta, Nicholas B.D. Phelps, Douglas A. Jensen, Robert C. Venette
Journal of Extension
Invasive species harm natural and managed ecosystems. Awareness and management of these species depends on effective education and outreach. Traditional common names, including those with geographic references, for many invasive pests may perpetuate slanderous terms or stigmatize people from that place. To create more inclusive invasive species educational materials, the University of Minnesota Extension’s Invasive Species Community of Practice developed guidelines for selection of common names. Suggested names were shared with others involved in invasive species communications, leading to broader adoption. These guidelines may be useful to others who struggle to find descriptive, non-alienating common names for invasive species.

Embodiment, Plasticity, And The Re/Production Of Gender, Sex, And Race In Human Biology, Meredith Wilson
Embodiment, Plasticity, And The Re/Production Of Gender, Sex, And Race In Human Biology, Meredith Wilson
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
This paper historically situates human biology research by engaging with feminist science and technology scholars to show how a key mechanism of embodiment, plasticity, is used to re/produce sex and gender binaries in anthropological research and beyond. I begin by defining embodiment and demonstrating its reliance on plasticity. Next, I discuss plasticity and review how and why it has been taken up in human biology research. After, I engage with the works of feminist, trans, and queer scholars who have examined the connection between embodiment, plasticity, and the creation of Western binarized sex and gender. Further, I present how the …
Memories Of The Past: Engagement With Colonial Narratives In Modern-Day Spain, Amelia Wang
Memories Of The Past: Engagement With Colonial Narratives In Modern-Day Spain, Amelia Wang
Undergraduate Project Award
Abstract: Over the past fifteen years, the way colonialism is remembered and taught has come under fire. In Spain, dominant political forces strike against one another on what the “correct” history of colonization looks like. Of particular concern is how the stories of colonialism have been remembered and taught and what these stories might look like moving forward. This paper examines the rise and fall of the Spanish Empire and the long-term impacts of the colonial period and then discusses how the colonial period is remembered in Spain and the impact of collective memory on national identity. It does so …
Evaluating Leadership Behaviors And Their Impact On Employee Morale: A Comparative Methodological Analysis, Mark Ellis
Evaluating Leadership Behaviors And Their Impact On Employee Morale: A Comparative Methodological Analysis, Mark Ellis
Journal of Fundamental & Applied Business Research
This article encompassed the effect of diverse leadership behaviors on employee morale across variable organizational contexts but with a core interest in transformational and participative styles. The analysis brings together findings from a range of methodological approaches that include cross-sectional surveys, longitudinal studies, multi-level analyses, and cross-national research to provide a comprehensive understanding of how leadership impacts employee engagement, job satisfaction, and organizational success. These results indicate that supportive, positive leadership behaviors - empowering and engaging leadership - affect employee morale and innovative behavior - autocratic leadership results in destructive outcomes, such as employee dissatisfaction and high turnover rates. Perhaps …

A Study Of Inhibition Development In Young Children, Ai Thi Thanh Hoang
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Child inhibition can be learned consciously and unconsciously, and it is highly dependent on the quality of interaction with adults (i.e., parents and teachers). However, little is known about the impact of teachers’ emotional management and sensitivity on the development of inhibition skills among students in early childhood classrooms. This dissertation takes an integrative approach to explore whether teacher-child relationship and teacher self-efficacy have a bidirectional connection and how they work to impact child inhibition, directly and indirectly. The present research utilizes the large nationally represented Early Childhood Longitudinal Study 2010-2011, sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics in …

Is Acts Really “The Most Overtly Missionary Book”?, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
The aim of this article is twofold: first, to challenge the white reading of the book of Acts, and second, to offer an alternative reading by placing the story of the marginalized people, the colonized people, at the center. The first part of this article interrogates how white pentecostal scholars read the book of Acts as a missionary book and identify themselves with the disciples in the book of Acts. After presenting the problems with this reading, I propose an alternative interpretation of the movement in Acts as a migration movement instead of a missionary movement. Reading it from a …
