Nest/Ing: An Emergent (Un)Methodology For Becoming Otherwise, Jayne Osgood, Claire Walsh Jan 2024

Nest/Ing: An Emergent (Un)Methodology For Becoming Otherwise, Jayne Osgood, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

A dense, pungent, brown-green, intricately woven, itchy-silky, moss-strewn, twig- ridden ball brought us together.Since then, nest(ing)[i] has become a shared methodology - nest/ing has offered a praxis of getting to know each other, getting to know nests (better) and it has become a capacious writing methodology. Taking nest(ing) seriously has drawn into sharp focus the perils of human exceptionalism. Nesting has gifted opportunities to wallow in porous boundaries and to luxuriate in modes of liminal reading/writing/experimenting, informed by a feminist politics to imagine the world differently (Despret, 2016). It is through lively storytelling, involving passing patterns back and forth that …

The House I'D Like To Have: Women's Spatial Cultures, Design, And Aesthetic In 20th Century Italy, Francesca Romana Forlini

Interiority

"Has any woman ever designed architectures in the past centuries? You may ask her to design a hut, not even a temple! She can't. She is foreign to architecture." These infamous words of Benito Mussolini (1927) reflected the widespread sexism of the Fascist regime and prompted a silent wave of dissent pioneered by women intellectuals, architects, writers, and journalists in the early 20th century. They advocated for a valuable feminine contribution to Italian architecture and their story is still partially unknown by architectural historians today. This essay tackles Italian women's spatial design and aesthetics during the regime, a period in …

Objectives: Body size and shape are sexually dimorphic in humans, with men being characterized with larger upper bodies, while women typically having broader pelvises. Such sexually dimorphic traits, quantified as shoulder to hip ratio (SHR) in men and waist to hip ratio (WHR) in women, serve as cues of an individual’s genetic fitness, reproductive potential, health, and resource holding power, and, thereby, functioning as attractiveness cues to the opposite sex. Methods: In the current study, we investigated men’s and women’s preference for the opposite sex body shape (WHR in women and SHR in men) in samples from Iran, Norway, Poland, …

Death, Dreaming, And Diaspora: Achieving Orientation Through Afro-Spirituality, Liz Johnston, Jaime Elizabeth Johnston Jan 2024

Death, Dreaming, And Diaspora: Achieving Orientation Through Afro-Spirituality, Liz Johnston, Jaime Elizabeth Johnston

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Enslavement, colonization, and the systems that uphold racial injustice were and still are a series of new, unfathomable, and challenging experiences that prompt individuals within the diaspora to seek orientation. How does a human cope with centuries of attempts at the systematic destruction of their humanity, culture, and identity? How can they reclaim that identity, especially when so much of it seems lost? I address these questions by utilizing texts from the expansive body of work regarding ethnographic-historical-religious studies on Afro-spiritual practices to better analyze instances in literature in the ongoing practice of diasporic orientation. In this project, I argue …

The Effect Of S-Allyl L-Cysteine On Retinal Ischemia: The Contributions Of Mcp-1 And Pkm2 In The Underlying Medicinal Properties, Windsor Wen-Jin Chao, Howard Wen-Haur Chao, Hung-Fu Lee, Hsiao-Ming Chao

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Retinal ischemia plays a vital role in vision-threatening retinal ischemic disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, etc. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of S-allyl L-cysteine (SAC) and its associated therapeutic mechanism. Oxidative stress was induced by administration of 500 μM H2O2 for 24 h; SAC demonstrated a dose-dependent neuroprotective effect with significant cell viability effects at 100 μM, and it concurrently downregulated angiogenesis factor PKM2 and inflammatory biomarker MCP-1. In a Wistar rat model of high intraocular pressure (HIOP)-induced retinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R), post-administration of 100 μM SAC counteracted the ischemic-associated …

The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced lie detection tools in business, educational, community, and governmental contexts signals a new era of deception detection. With these AI developments, collections of intimate biometric information such as facial and retinal data, keystroke patterns, brain scans, and physiological changes in the cardiovascular system are combined with personal profiles to produce analyses of a subject’s supposed veracity. This article explores some early lie detection technologies (such as the polygraph) and discusses the influences that lie detection initiatives have had in human interactions through the decades. It addresses the empirical issues of whether specific AI technologies …

Exploring The Relationship Between Sharing Economy, Socially Responsible Consumption And Materialism - A Conceptual Paper, Keren Khambhata, Janki Mistry, Ritesh Khatwani, Mahima Mishra, Geetanjali Pinto

Information Sciences Letters

Modern Cultures constantly place emphasis on consumption processes. As consumption becomes more important, the notion of consumer accountability for the current difficulties becomes more pertinent. The catastrophic extinction of animal species and ongoing greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to our unsustainable consumption of natural resources, and a result of our over exploitation of the environment, particularly in more developed nations. Among other negative effects, unsustainable consumption causes habitat loss, biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change. In the past decade, a disruptive phenomenon called “Sharing Economy” has evolved as a phenomenon that is extensively being discussed in order to encourage more …

Understanding The New Stress Factors Affecting Teachers' Burnout: A Scoping Review, Joby Thomas, Marc Eric S. Reyes Jan 2024

Understanding The New Stress Factors Affecting Teachers' Burnout: A Scoping Review, Joby Thomas, Marc Eric S. Reyes

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The teaching profession is extremely vulnerable to burnout. The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic posed new threats and changed the educational environment, the perceptions and the values of teachers. The traditional in-person learning approach was quickly replaced by distant online learning to continue education. As schools reopened, a new educational platform, the hybrid learning model, evolved by fusing the two learning models. The high expectations placed on teachers to swiftly adopt new teaching methods—often without the required resources or training—exacerbated their exhaustion. We conducted a scoping review to determine the new stress factors that cause teachers’ burnout, following the …

Looking For Another Assessment Tool That Activates The Principles Of Aal (Assessment As Learning)? Look No Further Than The Ratpd!, Mark Minott

Essays in Education

Frequently discussed in the literature on assessment are the ideas of assessment of learning (AoL), assessment for learning (AfL) and assessment as learning (AaL). This paper draws the readers’ attention to the idea of AaL, an assessment strategy entitled the Reflective Approach to Teaching Practicum Debriefing (RATPD) and answers the question, “To what extent is the Reflective Approach to Teaching Practicum Debriefing (RATPD) strategy an assessment as Learning (AaL) activity?” By discussing and connecting AaL and RATPD, the main conclusion was, enacting the RATPD is engaging in an actual AaL activity. Therefore, through this paper, readers are introduced to another …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Due to the influence of different cultural contexts, the process of foreign terms entering the Chinese context is often accompanied by “variation”. The semantic evolution of “inspiration” in the translation process serves as a typical example. The Japanese transliteration of romaji (innsubiresyo) follows the translation of ancient Greek-Latin languages. While Liang Qichao's Chinese transliteration of the word implies a potential contradiction between “availability to all” and “unique genius”, it allows for a broad scope of reinterpretation within the Chinese context. The translation as Linggan gradually establishes a connection and transformation with categories such as “sensation” in traditional Chinese culture, while …

His Research Interests Include Overseas Chinese Studies, Critical Theory And Cultural Studies.

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Since the 1960s, Chinese American scholars' criticisms of Lu Xun have experienced a paradigm shift from aesthetic criticism and biographical criticism to deconstructive criticism, forming a homogeneous relationship with the development of American literary criticism. Especially from the 1990s onwards, under the influence of postmodernism and postcolonialism, Chinese American scholars have critically revisited the issue of “origin” and “totality”, which registers a general tendency of radical “patricide”. They strategically consider Lu Xun, “father of modern Chinese literature”, as a symbol of nationalism, and deconstruct Lu Xun's authorial intention with a skeptical stance, consequently reversing the power relations between writers and …

Her Research Interests Include Modern Chinese Literature And Literary Thought.

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The neo-sensationalist literary orientation of Shi Zhecun, Liu Naou and Mu Shiying basically took shape between 1926 and 1928, before they became the school known as “Chinese Neo-sensationalists”. In addition to overlapping literary interests, Liu Naou's reading tastes contributed to the shaping of other members' early literary views. Liu Naou's diary in 1927 and neo-sensationalist works show that aestheticism, especially Junichiro Tanizaki's literary works, connected their interests. The group's reception of Tanizaki's work was intertwined with personal aesthetics and social concerns; their motivation was generally outward rather than inward. The shared preference for Tanizaki not only unified Chinese Neo-sensationalists, but …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

There has been little discussion in the academic world as to why the first cry of Call to Arms is Diary of a Madman. To address this question, we must delve in to Lu Xun's emotional-spiritual framework and thought-generating process, which he honed as a witness to and participant in the enlightenment and revolution of the late Qing dynasty. Additionally, we need to examine Lu Xun's understanding of the social structure of the late Qing and early Republican periods, as well as his methods of textual development. Written in 1911, Nostalgia already presented Lu Xun's unique perspectives on social …
