Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder with genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity. Accumulating rare and genome-wide association study (GWAS) common risk variant information has yet to yield robust mechanistic insight. Leveraging large-scale gene deletion mouse phenomic data thus has potential to functionally interrogate and prioritize human disease genes. To this end, we applied a cross-species network-based approach to parse an extensive mouse gene set (188 genes) associated with disrupted prepulse inhibition (PPI), a Schizophrenia endophenotype. Integrating PPI genes with high-resolution mouse and human brain transcriptomic data, we identified functional and disease coherent co-expression modules through hierarchical clustering and weighted gene co-expression …

Self-Correcting Method For Highly Effective Office-Based Helicobacter Pylori Therapy Using Cumulative Test Of Cure Data, Maria Pina Dore, Ruben Hernaez, David Y Graham Jan 2024

Self-Correcting Method For Highly Effective Office-Based Helicobacter Pylori Therapy Using Cumulative Test Of Cure Data, Maria Pina Dore, Ruben Hernaez, David Y Graham

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background and aim: Helicobacter pylori infections have become resistant to many previously highly effective antimicrobial regimens resulting in clarithromycin, metronidazole, or fluoroquinolone-containing therapies becoming unsuccessful. Pretreatment susceptibility testing is only widely available in the United States but is still rarely done. Here, we propose a framework to monitor H. pylori eradication in small clinical settings by routinely assessing the effectiveness of therapy.

Methods: Because of the small sample size in individual practice's, we assume an acceptable cure rate of ≥80% (preferred cure rate ≥85%) in adherent patients, with a dichotomous outcome (cured vs. failed) and consecutive patient enrollment. To obtain …

This National Lipid Association (NLA) Expert Clinical Consensus provides an overview of the physiologic and clinical considerations regarding the role of apolipoprotein B (apoB) measurement to guide clinical care based on the available scientific evidence and expert opinion. ApoB represents the total concentration of atherogenic lipoprotein particles in the circulation and more accurately reflects the atherogenic burden of lipoproteins when compared to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). ApoB is a validated clinical measurement that augments the information found in a standard lipoprotein lipid panel; therefore, there is clinical value in using apoB in conjunction with a standard lipoprotein lipid profile when …

Lack Of Association Of A1c With Postoperative Complications In Children With Type 1 Or Type 2 Diabetes, Grace Kim, Mckenna C Richards, Abigail B Smith, Kathleen M Strybos, Xiaofan Huang, Kristen Staggers, Stephen A Stayer, Rahul G Baijal Jan 2024

Lack Of Association Of A1c With Postoperative Complications In Children With Type 1 Or Type 2 Diabetes, Grace Kim, Mckenna C Richards, Abigail B Smith, Kathleen M Strybos, Xiaofan Huang, Kristen Staggers, Stephen A Stayer, Rahul G Baijal

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Not meeting recommended A1C targets may be associated with postoperative complications in adults, but there are no studies reporting on the relationship between preoperative A1C and postoperative complications in children with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The objective of this study was to determine whether elevated A1C levels were associated with an increased incidence of postoperative complications in children with diabetes presenting for elective noncardiac surgery or diagnostic procedures. It found no such association, suggesting no need to delay elective surgery in children with diabetes until A1C is optimized.

Whiteness As The Standard: Shifting Ideologies, Race, And Social Context, Kelsey Swift Jan 2024

Whiteness As The Standard: Shifting Ideologies, Race, And Social Context, Kelsey Swift

Publications and Research

In previous work, I have documented and analyzed the persistence of mainstream ideologies around ’standard’ and ’nonstandard’ American English in the adult ESOL classroom and their connection to linguistic racism and anti-Blackness. This study explores how these ideologies developed more broadly, employing elements of raciolinguistic genealogy and metapragmatics to analyze historical language scholarship. I find that while the linguistic features of ‘nonstandard’ English have remained remarkably consistent in the popular imagination, they became increasingly linked with Blackness, especially during and after white backlash to the Great Migration (and other cultural and political changes) in the mid-20th century. I argue that …

Clinically deployed deep learning-based segmentation models are known to fail on data outside of their training distributions. While clinicians review the segmentations, these models tend to perform well in most instances, which could exacerbate automation bias. Therefore, detecting out-of-distribution images at inference is critical to warn the clinicians that the model likely failed. This work applied the Mahalanobis distance (MD) post hoc to the bottleneck features of four Swin UNETR and nnU-net models that segmented the liver on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. By reducing the dimensions of the bottleneck features with either principal component analysis or uniform …

The Spillover Of Us Monetary Policy On Eu Agricultural Prices: A Panel Varx Analysis, Mishuk Roy Jan 2024

The Spillover Of Us Monetary Policy On Eu Agricultural Prices: A Panel Varx Analysis, Mishuk Roy

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This research examines the nexus between US monetary policy shocks and agricultural prices of the EU. Utilizing monthly prices of beef, wheat, and barley of 21 EU countries, we estimate the impact of US monetary policy shocks on these three agricultural prices in a Panel Vector Autoregression with Exogenous Variables (PVARX) framework. We find that a contractionary monetary policy shock in the US has heterogeneous effects across the storable and non-storable commodity prices in the EU. Specifically, a contractionary monetary policy shock in the US reduces EU wheat and barley prices and increases EU beef prices. However, the estimated impulse …

The first experiment evaluates the use of visual cues, such as posters and footprints, to nudge individuals towards choosing stairs over elevators, promoting physical activity. The second delves into the psychological impact of personalized praise on college students' motivation, efficacy, and confidence, correlating these factors with academic performance. By integrating quantitative and qualitative research methods, the studies intend to assess the effectiveness of these behavioral nudges in directing behavior toward desirable outcomes. Contributing to the expanding discourse on behavioral economics and nudge …

Farm Operator Preferences Regarding Site Specific Weed Control Adoption, Devon Schwarzrock Jan 2024

Farm Operator Preferences Regarding Site Specific Weed Control Adoption, Devon Schwarzrock

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

An increasingly popular use for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is drone applied site specific weed control (SSWC). Site-specific herbicide application allows applicators to target previously mapped weed clusters and spot sprays the targeted weeds individually. This benefits farmers by generating cost savings from reducing herbicide usage and limits overapplication of herbicide. This study aims to identify characteristics of spray drones that are desirable amongst farmers. A discrete choice experiment is used to identify attributes which farmers deem more valuable than others. This study finds that price, herbicide reduction rate, and application rate significantly impact a farmer’s decision to rent or …

Trade Disruption And Commodity-Program Payments: A Panel Garch Model, Bismark Asante Jan 2024

Trade Disruption And Commodity-Program Payments: A Panel Garch Model, Bismark Asante

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Trade disruption has reduced the economic gains countries enjoy from great trade relationships. This disruption stems from trade wars, exchange rate volatility, and rare events. However, the gravity model, mainly used to investigate this problem, is plagued with heteroscedasticity, omitted variables, and zero trade flow. This makes it difficult for farmers, policymakers, and investors to predict how the international market behaves. The study assesses how commodity-program payments help mitigate shocks from trade disruptions using a panel GARCH model. Hence, the study examines the source of trade disruption, the intensity of trade disruption on soybean and corn export, the risk associated …

Background: Diagnostic errors lead to patient harm; however, most research has been conducted in nonsurgical disciplines. We sought to characterize diagnostic error in the pre-, intra-, and postoperative surgical phases, describe their contributing factors, and quantify their impact related to patient harm.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of closed medico-legal cases and complaints using a database representing more than 95% of all Canadian physicians. We included cases if they involved a legal action or complaint that closed between 2014 and 2018 and involved a diagnostic error assigned by peer expert review to a surgeon.

Results: We identified 387 surgical …

International Grain Origin Switching: Contract Washouts And Embedded Switching Options, Caleb Hauck Jan 2024

International Grain Origin Switching: Contract Washouts And Embedded Switching Options, Caleb Hauck

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Changing dynamics in the international grain trading industry have led to a rise in two new contracting practices colloquially termed washouts and switching options and formally defined as contract washouts and embedded origin switching options. When spatial arbitrage opportunities exist, grain buying firms switch from one origin to another. This thesis documents the increased frequency with which these contract practices have been used and examines the factors that incentivize firms to use them. Using data from 2018 to 2023, two models are developed with a binomial lattice that value these contracting terms. The results indicate that these practices have significant …

Photo-Induced Charge State Dynamics Of The Neutral And Negatively Charged Silicon Vacancy Centers In Room-Temperature Diamond, G. Garcia-Arellano, G. I. López-Morales, N. B. Manson, J. Flick, A. A. Wood, C. A. Meriles Jan 2024

Photo-Induced Charge State Dynamics Of The Neutral And Negatively Charged Silicon Vacancy Centers In Room-Temperature Diamond, G. Garcia-Arellano, G. I. López-Morales, N. B. Manson, J. Flick, A. A. Wood, C. A. Meriles

Publications and Research

The silicon vacancy (SiV) center in diamond is drawing much attention due to its optical and spin properties, attractive for quantum information processing and sensing. Comparatively little is known, however, about the dynamics governing SiV charge state interconversion mainly due to challenges associated with generating, stabilizing, and characterizing all possible charge states, particularly at room temperature. Here, multi-color confocal microscopy and density functional theory are used to examine photo-induced SiV recombination — from neutral, to single-, to double-negatively charged — over a broad spectral window in chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) diamond under ambient conditions. For the SiV0 to SiV‒ transition, …

Radiation Pressure Induced Oscillations Of An Optically Levitating Mirror, Satyam Shekhar Jha, Tal Carmon, Fan Cheng, Lev Deych Jan 2024

Radiation Pressure Induced Oscillations Of An Optically Levitating Mirror, Satyam Shekhar Jha, Tal Carmon, Fan Cheng, Lev Deych

Publications and Research

Optical Fabry–Perot cavity with a movable mirror is a paradigmatic optomechanical system. While usually the mirror is supported by a mechanical spring, it has been shown that it is possible to keep one of the mirrors in a stable equilibrium purely by optical levitation without any mechanical support. In this work, we expand previous studies of the nonlinear dynamics of such a system by demonstrating a possibility for mechanical parametric instability and the emergence of the “phonon laser” phenomenon.

It Is Normal: The Probability Distribution Of Temperature Extremes, Nir Y. Krakauer Jan 2024

It Is Normal: The Probability Distribution Of Temperature Extremes, Nir Y. Krakauer

Publications and Research

The probability of heat extremes is often estimated using the non-stationary generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) applied to time series of annual maximum temperature. Here, this practice was assessed using a global sample of temperature time series, from reanalysis (both at the grid point and the region scale) as well as station observations. This assessment used forecast negative log-likelihood as the main performance measure, which is particularly sensitive to the most extreme heat waves. It was found that the computationally simpler normal distribution outperforms the GEVD in providing probabilistic year-ahead forecasts of temperature extremes. Given these findings, it is suggested …

A Definition Of A Heywood Case In Item Response Theory Based On Fisher Information, Jay Verkuilen, Peter J. Johnson Jan 2024

A Definition Of A Heywood Case In Item Response Theory Based On Fisher Information, Jay Verkuilen, Peter J. Johnson

Publications and Research

Heywood cases and other improper solutions occur frequently in latent variable models, e.g., factor analysis, item response theory, latent class analysis, multilevel models, or structural equation models, all of which are models with response variables taken from an exponential family. They have important consequences for scoring with the latent variable model and are indicative of issues in a model, such as poor identification or model misspecification. In the context of the 2PL and 3PL models in IRT, they are more frequently known as Guttman items and are identified by having a discrimination parameter that is deemed excessively large. Other IRT …

Eligible participants were at least 18 years old, had LBP for at least 6 weeks, were not pregnant, had not previously taken tai chi classes, and had not undergone spine surgery within 6 months. The treatment group received a 12-week VDTQM …

Effective Size Of A Parity-Time-Symmetric Dimer, Li Ge Jan 2024

Effective Size Of A Parity-Time-Symmetric Dimer, Li Ge

Publications and Research

Parity-time (PT)-symmetric dimers were introduced to highlight the unusual properties of non-Hermitian systems that are invariant after a combined parity and time reversal operation. They are also the building blocks of a variety of symmetry and topologically protected structures, especially on integrated photonic platforms. As the name suggests, it consists of two coupled oscillators, which can be optical, mechanical, electronic, and so on in nature. In this article, we show that its effective size, defined by the number of lattice sites inversely proportional to the lattice momentum, is surprisingly three instead of two from the perspective of energy quantization. Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is an ultra-rare inherited condition that affects approximately one in 300,000 people. The disorder is characterized by extremely high, life-threatening levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from birth, leading to significant premature cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, if left untreated.

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is severely underdiagnosed and undertreated in the United States (US), despite guidelines recommendations for universal pediatric lipid screening in children aged 9–11. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment are critical in averting premature cardiovascular disease in individuals affected by HoFH. Yet, an unacceptably high number of people living with HoFH remain undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and/or receive …

Gut Pathobiont Enrichment Observed In A Population Predisposed To Dementia, Type 2 Diabetics Of Mexican Descent Living In South Texas, Lisa M Matz, Nisarg S Shah, Laura Porterfield, Olivia M Stuyck, Michael D Jochum, Rakez Kayed, Giulio Taglialatela, Randall J Urban, Shelly A Buffington

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common forerunner of neurodegeneration and accompanying dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease (AD), yet the mechanisms underlying this comorbidity remain unresolved. Individuals of Mexican descent living in South Texas have increased prevalence of comorbid T2D and early onset AD, despite low incidence of the APOE-ε4 risk variant among the population and an absence of a similar predisposition among relatives residing in Mexico - suggesting a role for environmental factors in coincident T2D and AD susceptibility. We therefore sought to test if differences in gut community structure could be observed in this population prior to any AD …

One-Carbon Metabolites, Fetal Growth, Maternal Oxidative Stress, And Fetal Programming During Early Gestation, Layla King Jan 2024

One-Carbon Metabolites, Fetal Growth, Maternal Oxidative Stress, And Fetal Programming During Early Gestation, Layla King

Animal Sciences

In ruminant production systems, maternal nutrient intake and supplementation practices vary widely throughout the industry. Adequate maternal nutrient supply is critical for fetal development and subsequent offspring performance and health. Therefore, determining strategic supplementation of specific nutrients during critical developmental windows is crucial to fetal growth during early gestation will positively impact beef cattle production systems. In this dissertation, two experiments using beef heifers were conducted to test the hypothesis that differing maternal rate of gain (achieved through differing intake) during the first 63 d of pregnancy would compromise indices of maternal and fetal development; and that strategic nutrient supplementation …

Targeted, Harassed, And Displaced: The Role Of Discrimination In Oregon Evictions, Alex Farrington, Natalie J. Cholula, Lisa K. Bates

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Drawing on focus groups with 101 Oregon tenants who have experienced an eviction since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this report examines the role that discrimination plays in Oregon evictions. As this is not a legal investigation, we do not focus solely on legally-actionable or provable claims. Rather, we include a wide range of tenants’ descriptions of their experiences with unfair, malicious, or prejudicial treatment. We find that many tenants are specifically targeted for eviction or experience prejudicial treatment during the eviction process because of their identity or background. This includes being treated unfairly based on tenants’ race, language, …
