A Decade Of Marine Inorganic Carbon Chemistry Observations In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska – Insights Into An Environment In Transition, Natalie M. Monacci, Jessica N. Cross, Wiley Evans, Jeremy T. Mathis, Hongjie Wang

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

As elsewhere in the global ocean, the Gulf of Alaska is experiencing the rapid onset of ocean acidification (OA) driven by oceanic absorption of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In support of OA research and monitoring, we present here a data product of marine inorganic carbon chemistry parameters measured from seawater samples taken during biannual cruises between 2008 and 2017 in the northern Gulf of Alaska. Samples were collected each May and September over the 10 year period using a conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) profiler coupled with a Niskin bottle rosette at stations including a long-term hydrographic …

Can Informed Consent Solve Ai Bias?, W. Nicholson Price Ii Jan 2024

Can Informed Consent Solve Ai Bias?, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Reviews

Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving increasingly rapidly into health care (as indeed into everything else). But it has problems there (as indeed everywhere else!). What’s to be done, in particular, about the deeply embedded biases along racial and other lines that permeate the whole world of health and, as such, are likely to be encoded in AI?

Khiara Bridges gives an answer that seems mild but carries roots of revolution. In Race in the Machine: Racial Disparities in Health and Medical AI, she argues that informed consent is a key lever to pull in fighting these racial disparities. But not …

Odd Fellows: The Intersection Of Arminianism And Calvinism In The Writings Of Desmond Ford And F.F. Bruce, Samuel Pagán De Jesus Jan 2024

Odd Fellows: The Intersection Of Arminianism And Calvinism In The Writings Of Desmond Ford And F.F. Bruce, Samuel Pagán De Jesus

Dissertations

The Topic

In the 1970s, the Seventh-day Adventist church’s theological struggles over righteousness by faith and perfectionism revealed that Adventists were confused about their Protestant identity and what it meant to have the assurance of salvation. That struggle is exemplified in Desmond Ford’s writings. His doctoral studies under evangelical scholar F. F. Bruce prompted the Historic Adventists to wonder whether Ford had abandoned the Arminian synergistic soteriology for Calvinism’s monergism.

The Purpose

The purpose of this study was to explore to what extent Frederick F. Bruce’s Reformed views, theological assumptions, and commitments were shared by and reflected in Desmond Ford’s …

Product Elimination Decision And Its Impact On Consumers: The Special Case Of A Local Speedway, Mark Mitchell, Jacob Voegel, Michael Smith Jan 2024

Product Elimination Decision And Its Impact On Consumers: The Special Case Of A Local Speedway, Mark Mitchell, Jacob Voegel, Michael Smith

Atlantic Marketing Journal

After 60+ years of operation, Myrtle Beach Speedway was closed and the property sold. The new owners will redevelop the property for commercial and residential purposes. Businesses routinely eliminate products for a variety of reasons, including under-performance and/or a desire to redeploy those resources elsewhere. What is often overlooked is the impact on consumers. In addition to reducing fan access to racing, a closed race track removes a racing opportunity for aspiring race car drivers and crew members. It can also mean shuttering tracks that once had historical significance. The history of raceway closures in the Myrtle Beach, SC area …

Epigenetic Regulation Of Inflammatory Pathways In Alcohol Related Hepatitis, Huey Kuan Tan Jan 2024

Epigenetic Regulation Of Inflammatory Pathways In Alcohol Related Hepatitis, Huey Kuan Tan

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Background: Alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD) contributes to approximately 1% of deaths worldwide and impacts on both economy and healthcare system. Alcohol related hepatitis (AH) - phenomenon of ArLD which is characterised by overactive inflammation is associated with 30% mortality rate at 90 days. Glucocorticoids (GC) are commonly used to treat AH. However, more than 1 in 3 patients fail to respond to GC therapy. Within the GC responders, the efficacy is variable due to individual glucocorticoid resistance. Improving our comprehension of GC non-responsiveness/ resistance is critical for early stratification of these patients and development of alternative therapies. This piece of …

Confessions And Quantum Uncertainties: The Violence Of Language, Organismic Cells, And The Incarnation Of Words, Nahanni Freeman Jan 2024

Confessions And Quantum Uncertainties: The Violence Of Language, Organismic Cells, And The Incarnation Of Words, Nahanni Freeman

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

This chapter will seek to examine language in its many permutations, including its inculcation from sociocultural, religious and historical forces, and its emergence within a developmental context that includes interiorization into private speech. The limitations of language for simulating the mind of the Other, the distance between minds, and the constant dynamism of words will be evaluated in light of the theme of the value of recognizing subjectivity and acknowledging layers of meaning in the quest for truth and legitimacy. Metaphors of the body are used to represent ecological and systemic forces in language, also emphasizing the potency of mind-word-body …

Reporting And Addressing Sexual Harassment At Four Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zambia: A Quantitative Study Of Related Attitudes And Perceptions, Earlymay Chibende Jan 2024

Reporting And Addressing Sexual Harassment At Four Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zambia: A Quantitative Study Of Related Attitudes And Perceptions, Earlymay Chibende

Dissertations

Problem

Sexual harassment is a social ill that exists across nations, socio-economic backgrounds, races, nationality, ethnicity, age groups, and sex. Although both male and female members of society experience sexual harassment, research shows that a greater percentage of sexual harassment victims are women (Whitley & Page, 2015; CharterJee, 2018). A comparison of the prevalence of sexual harassment at workplaces and educational institutions shows that sexual harassment is more widespread at institutions of learning than at workplaces. Research on the prevalence of attitudes and or perceptions toward sexual harassment in institutions of higher learning shows that between 10%- 68% of female …

The dissertation examined African American women with chieftaincy titles in Yoruba culture and how they exercised their leadership in both Yorubaland and America. It explored their leadership, authority, and training. The presence of African American women with chieftaincy titles is increasing in the American landscape. The methodology was qualitative using narrative inquiry and portraiture from Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot and Jessica Hoffman Davis (1997) with five African American women. My research included observations in Nigerian, pre-Osun festival, the Osun festival, and post-Osun festival. Observations also included three women Nigerian Chiefs. The research questions answered their qualifications to lead, their sense of knowing …

Narratives That Perpetuate, Narratives That Disrupt, And Narratives That Heal: One Teacher’S Exploration Of Decoloniality, Alison Packwood Henry Jan 2024

Narratives That Perpetuate, Narratives That Disrupt, And Narratives That Heal: One Teacher’S Exploration Of Decoloniality, Alison Packwood Henry

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The initial question was innocent enough, at least on the surface: How do scholars and practitioners define child centered, developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive education in places distant from my home in the US? I was originally inspired to ask this question by my graduate students—aspiring and practicing Waldorf teachers—who were wrestling with the Eurocentric nature of the curriculum. In researching this question, I never imagined that I would find myself asking questions about the decolonization and indigenization of education, much less about coloniality. In fact, even as I completed the literature review, I was still so unfamiliar with the word …

The Lived Experiences Of Sex Offenders: Perceptions Of Pedophilic Offenders Regarding Engagement In Community Treatment, Ali K. Madrid Jan 2024

The Lived Experiences Of Sex Offenders: Perceptions Of Pedophilic Offenders Regarding Engagement In Community Treatment, Ali K. Madrid

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Pedophilia is a complex, multifaceted disorder that has existed, in some form, throughout all of human history. It was not until 1952, with the inception of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-1), that it was officially characterized as a psychiatric disorder. Treatment options have included surgeries, medications, cognitive behavior therapy, combined treatments (antiandrogenic drug and psychotherapy), and preventative programs. Pedophilic offenders released to the community must complete approved treatment. The community treatment may be manualized, evidence-based and likely to be effective. However, the offender must be willing and able to access the treatment resources. Participation in community …

My World's On Fire, How 'Bout Yours? An Investigation Of How Privilege Fosters And Maintains Climate Denial, Morgan A. Chester Jan 2024

My World's On Fire, How 'Bout Yours? An Investigation Of How Privilege Fosters And Maintains Climate Denial, Morgan A. Chester

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The present study investigates the phenomenon of climate denial through a new theoretical framework of privilege. The analysis utilizes a feminist orientation that builds on a historical interpretation through the lens of colonialism. Through the dissection of current multidisciplinary understandings of climate denial and new concepts discovered in the review of academic literature and popular media, a compilation of theory, relationship, and connection is made. Systems of power and privilege are examined and connected to the mechanisms and maintenance of climate denial. The resulting analysis illuminates that settler colonialism, supported by connected ideologies of White supremacy, ableism, and patriarchy inform …

Cps Workers’ Perspectives On Mst-Ipv And Other Interventions For Child Maltreatment And Intimate Partner Violence: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Malea Lash Jan 2024

Cps Workers’ Perspectives On Mst-Ipv And Other Interventions For Child Maltreatment And Intimate Partner Violence: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Malea Lash

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Although the co-occurrence rate of intimate partner violence (IPV) and child abuse and neglect (CAN) is about 40% (Appel and Holden, 1998; Herrenkohl et al., 2008), little research currently exists on integrated treatment for these concerns. Furthermore, no known published studies investigate child protective services (CPS) workers’ perspectives on such treatment. The present study explores the perspectives of CPS workers on treatment for co-occurring IPV and CAN, specifically focusing on Multisystemic Therapy for Intimate Partner Violence (MST-IPV). A total of 18 Connecticut CPS workers participated in semi-structured interviews. Seven participants had experience working with MST-IPV treatment providers, while 11 participants …

The Influence Of Highly Visual Social Media Engagement On The Body Image Of Cisgender Heterosexual Emerging Adult Men. A Grounded Theory Approach, Isaac Cheng Jan 2024

The Influence Of Highly Visual Social Media Engagement On The Body Image Of Cisgender Heterosexual Emerging Adult Men. A Grounded Theory Approach, Isaac Cheng

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The effects of highly visual social media (HVSM) on the body image of users is a widespread concern amongst consumers and popular topic of research. While numerous studies have explored the effects of HVSM on women's body image, the literature on men's body image, particularly among cisgender heterosexual men, is comparatively sparse. The present study utilized constructivist grounded theory methodology to develop an explanatory model illustrating how HVSM engagement by cisgender heterosexual emerging adult men influences their body image. Data analysis revealed how specific HVSM platform attributes, a user’s behavior on an HVSM platform, a user’s perception of an ideal …

The Anatomy Of Physician Fulfillment: Strategies Beyond Burnout, Brook Hale Jan 2024

The Anatomy Of Physician Fulfillment: Strategies Beyond Burnout, Brook Hale

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The persistent tension and power struggle between healthcare executives and physicians is a prevalent issue in healthcare organizations, often leading to a culture of organizational mistrust. This dynamic stems from perceived conflicting goals: executives are frequently seen as primarily focused on financial outcomes, while physicians are viewed as resistant to change. This study explored how physician fulfillment is experienced at work, with the ultimate goal of identifying potential interventions to bridge the gap between these groups. There is vast research and literature available regarding burnout in healthcare; this research focused on understanding what physicians find fulfilling in their work and …

Implementing A Nurse-Driven Protocol To Reduce Routine Gastric Residual Monitoring: A Quality Improvement Project, Alondra N. Abreu Carlo Jan 2024

Implementing A Nurse-Driven Protocol To Reduce Routine Gastric Residual Monitoring: A Quality Improvement Project, Alondra N. Abreu Carlo

Master's Theses and Capstones

The American Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ASPEN) and the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) updated the Adult Patient Enteral Nutrition Guidelines in 2016. These updates included discontinuing routine gastric residual monitoring due to its contribution to poor patient outcomes and mentioning the lack of evidence proving its relevance to gastric motility. Per ASPEN and SCCM, best practice suggests monitoring patients for intolerance symptoms and then checking gastric residual volume (GRV) if symptoms are present. If the GRV is greater than 500ml and intolerance symptoms are present, the recommendation is to perform further assessment, potentially leading to stopping …

Perceived Employer Authenticity Effects On Employee Engagement Demonstrated Through Csr/Esg Communications, Nichole P. Klaaren

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Having an engaged workforce is a key competitive advantage in the market today due to the unique benefits that employees create through organizational culture and their relationships with stakeholders. With the increase in organizations participating in and reporting their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) activities to their stakeholders, communicating these types of activities becomes another tool for improving employee engagement. This research uses Social Identity Theory (SIT) to explain the important connections that can be built with employees when a corporation acts authentically. The key objective of this study was to explore how corporate authenticity …

Chevron And Stare Decisis, Kent H. Barnett, Christopher J. Walker Jan 2024

Chevron And Stare Decisis, Kent H. Barnett, Christopher J. Walker

Scholarly Works

In our contribution to this Chevron on Trial Symposium, we argue that the Supreme Court should not overrule Chevron in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and its companion case Relentless v. Department of Commerce. We based our argument largely on statutory stare decisis. In particular, Chevron deference is a bedrock precedent in administrative law, relied on by the Supreme Court and the lower federal courts thousands of times since Chevron was decided in 1984. Congress, federal agencies, and the regulated public have also structured their affairs around the precedent. Conversely, the constitutional arguments against Chevron are unpersuasive, and the debate …

Crawford And Criminal Justice, William Ortman Jan 2024

Crawford And Criminal Justice, William Ortman

Scholarly Works

This essay reflects on whether Crawford v. Washington, now in its third decade of life, matters to criminal justice. For all the talk of Crawford as “revolutionary,” that is, has it made any real difference to the world of crime and punishment? I’ve confronted the question before. In a 2021 essay, I argued that Crawford probably has modest real-world effects. Crawford articulated a right that criminal defendants can exercise only at trial. In an adjudicatory system bereft of trials, trial rights don’t count for much. They impact plea outcomes only when they confer bargaining power sufficient to offset prosecutors’ …

The Periphery Of Bankruptcy Law: The Importance Of Non-Bankruptcy Issues In Consumer Bankruptcy, Pamela Foohey Jan 2024

The Periphery Of Bankruptcy Law: The Importance Of Non-Bankruptcy Issues In Consumer Bankruptcy, Pamela Foohey

Scholarly Works

One in eleven Americans have filed bankruptcy at some point during their lives. Based on the number of consumer bankruptcy cases initiated during the past several decades, about one million individuals will file every year. This makes bankruptcy courts the leading federal courts with which people have contact. Embedded in people’s cases are a host of legal issues that do not directly implicate bankruptcy law, such as the interpretation of states’ exemptions laws and Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code, the avoidance of liens, and defenses to contract claims. Consumer bankruptcy law, via its process, is intertwined with the …

Distinguishing Privacy Law: A Critique Of Privacy As Social Taxonomy, Maria P. Angel, Ryan Calo Jan 2024

Distinguishing Privacy Law: A Critique Of Privacy As Social Taxonomy, Maria P. Angel, Ryan Calo

Scholarly Works

What distinguishes violations of privacy from other harms? This has proven a surprisingly difficult question to answer. For over a century, privacy law scholars labored to define the illusive concept of privacy. Then they gave up. Efforts at distinguishing privacy came to be superseded at the turn of the millennium by a new approach: a taxonomy of privacy problems grounded in social recognition. Privacy law became the field that simply studies whatever courts or scholars talk about as related to privacy.

And it worked. Decades into privacy as social taxonomy, the field has expanded to encompass a broad range of …

Trustless Trust And Antitrust: A Synthesis, Mateusz Blaszczyk Jan 2024

Trustless Trust And Antitrust: A Synthesis, Mateusz Blaszczyk

Scholarly Works

Authors have written of antitrust law’s demise in the face of blockchain, which, seemingly, achieves the pro-competitive ends of the law through technology and private ordering. Permissionless blockchains in particular are said to offer a vision of radical disintermediation and a break with the platform economy troubling the regulators today. At the same time, blockchain supposedly presents challenges to antitrust doctrine, from the most basic of concepts to the viability of enforcement and remedies. Finally, blockchain community governance is said to allow for private ordering of antitrust, i.e., enforcement of rules attempting to protect competition, which are at the same …

Taxing Dirty Luxuries, Victoria J. Haneman Jan 2024

Taxing Dirty Luxuries, Victoria J. Haneman

Scholarly Works

Dirty luxuries are items that are pleasant or nice to have, not necessities, that absolutely bludgeon the environment. From the merely affluent to the ultra-rich, consumers enjoying dirty luxuries, such as luxury clothing, private jets, superyachts, SUVs, and vacation cruises, drive one of the most polluting types of consumption on the planet. This Article explores the climate costs of dirty luxuries, considers the current and proposed international efforts to address the climate impact of these luxuries, and proposes structures by which these luxuries may be taxed to either reduce consumption or compensate for negative externalities.

Electrophysiological And Clinical Fundamentals Of Qtc Prolongation Induced By Antipsychotic Medications, Zaid Naseer, Minaal Khan, Najeeb Manalai, Allison Foroobar, Patricia Harrison, Charles Scercy, Beth Yanoff, Partam Manalai Jan 2024

Electrophysiological And Clinical Fundamentals Of Qtc Prolongation Induced By Antipsychotic Medications, Zaid Naseer, Minaal Khan, Najeeb Manalai, Allison Foroobar, Patricia Harrison, Charles Scercy, Beth Yanoff, Partam Manalai

Department Surgery Faculty Publications

Patients with psychiatric disorders undergoing antipsychotic treatment are at an elevated risk for adverse cardiovascular events, including arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. While the precise mechanisms linking cardiovascular diseases and psychiatric conditions remain unclear, QTc prolongation is suspected to be a contributing factor. The human ether-à-go-go-related gene (hERG, or KCNH2), which affects potassium channels, is implicated in the cardiotoxicity of various medications, including antipsychotics. This gene plays a critical role in determining whether a drug will be approved for market use. This paper elucidates the electrophysiological basis of QTc prolongation and reviews the evidence concerning which antipsychotics may exacerbate QTc …

Panik V. Tmm, Inc., 139 Nev. Adv. Op. 53 (Nov. 30, 2023), Evan Callahan

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Anti-SLAPP statutes in Nevada follow a two-pronged analysis. The first prong asks whether the moving party has established, by a preponderance of the evidence, that the claims are based upon a good faith communication in furtherance of the right to free speech in direct connection with an issue of public concern. Similarly, the defendant must establish that the communication is truthful or was made without knowledge of its falsehood. The second prong asks whether the plaintiff has demonstrated with prima facie evidence a probability of prevailing on its claims. Anti-SLAPP statutes are not limited to specific kinds of claims for …

Engelson V. Dignity Health, 139 Nev. Adv. Op. 58 (Dec. 28, 2023), Javiera Sothers

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Nevada Court of Appeals determined that the accrual date of a professional negligence action’s statute of limitations is ordinarily determined as a matter of fact. However, if there is irrefutable evidence of such a date, a court can determine it as a matter of law. The Court also held that a wrongful death claim is sufficiently alleged if it alleges that (1) the defendant’s wrongful act or neglect caused the wrongful death and (2) the person bringing the claim is the heir or the personal representative of the decedent. Next, the Court determined that NRS 41A.071 does not require …

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

There is now clarification on the application of the waiver rule in the context of administrative law, specifically in cases before the Nevada Transportation Authority (hereinafter “NTA”). The Court held that arguments not raised during administrative proceedings are generally considered waived and cannot be introduced in later judicial reviews. This decision emphasizes the importance of presenting all relevant arguments and issues at the earliest stage of administrative proceedings.

Taylor V. Brill [State Of Nevada], 139 Nev. Adv. Rep. 56 (Dec. 21, 2023), Makai Zuniga

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Firstly, the Court in this case considered whether defendants to a medical malpractice action may present evidence concerning the plaintiff's informed consent or assumption of the risk when the plaintiff does not raise a claim based on lack of informed consent. Furthermore, it held that assumption-of-the-risk evidence can be relevant in instances where a plaintiff’s consent to the procedure is challenged, but neither the defense nor evidence of informed consent is admissible in a medical malpractice action, where the plaintiff’s consent is uncontested. Secondly, the Court considered whether a plaintiff must use expert testimony to show that the medical damages …
