Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Evidence has indicated that Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs have lowered the age of identifying permanent hearing loss (PHL) in childhood, a first step to intervention. However, limited research has compared the age of diagnosis before and after implementation in one jurisdiction across the full range of PHL.

Methods: Children diagnosed with PHL in Ottawa, Canada were identified from the Child Hearing Lab database at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and linked to Ontario health administrative data. Age of identification of PHL of children born in the pre-infant hearing program (IHP) era (1991-2002) was compared to those …

Human Rights And The Task Force Detainees Of The Philippines: Religious Opposition To The Marcos Dictatorship, 1972-1986, Mark John Sanchez

Kritika Kultura

As a representative of Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), Sr. Mariani Dimaranan traveled worldwide, working to highlight human rights injustice in the Philippines and to gather support for the efforts of her organization. TFDP’s efforts to highlight political detention took place in the milieu of 1970s international human rights discourse. While the importance of Western Europe and the United States on this discourse is often highlighted, less attention is given to the work of grassroots activists in places such as the Philippines. This article highlights the navigation between local and international political issues within Philippine- based grassroots opposition …

Monsters In The Pacific: The Philippines In The Hollywood Geopolitical Imaginary, Laurence Marvin S. Castillo Dec 2024

Monsters In The Pacific: The Philippines In The Hollywood Geopolitical Imaginary, Laurence Marvin S. Castillo

Kritika Kultura

The recent announcement of the American strategic pivot to the Asia Pacific calls for the examination of the ways by which the region, particularly its constituent states, is produced in and by the US imperialist imaginary. This essay responds to such critical imperative by analyzing the geopolitical imagination of the Philippine nation-space in the Hollywood giant monster films Pacific Rim (2013) and Godzilla (2014). The essay first discusses how the nation-state remains a crucial participant in the globalized expansion of capital, and how its participation is imagined in the realm of cinematic geopolitics. It then examines the development of the …

Interrogating Indonesian New Order’S Narrative Of Gestapu: The Leftist Nobles And The Indonesian Communist Party In Umar Kayam’S Stories, Paulus Sarwoto Dec 2024

Interrogating Indonesian New Order’S Narrative Of Gestapu: The Leftist Nobles And The Indonesian Communist Party In Umar Kayam’S Stories, Paulus Sarwoto

Kritika Kultura

Although the atrocity around the 1965 coup—better known as Gestapu, Gestok or G 30 S PKI in Indonesia—has been continually on the international humanitarian spotlight, its literary representation in Indonesia has been minimal. The strong hold of the New Order regime and their residue in the current political system must have something to do with this. Among a few vernacular writers coping with the aftermath of the tragedy but is less discussed as such is Umar Kayam. The four texts analysed in this article, “Bawuk,” “Musim Gugur Kembali ke Connecticut,” Para Priyayi and Jalan Menikung: Para Priyayi 2, interrogate the …

Theater And Nation In Contemporary Malaysia: The Work Of The Five Arts Centre, Ricardo G. Abad Dec 2024

Theater And Nation In Contemporary Malaysia: The Work Of The Five Arts Centre, Ricardo G. Abad

Kritika Kultura

How does theater interrogate a nation that preaches racial harmony, on the one hand, yet practices racial inequality, on the other? Focusing on the work of the Five Arts Centre, an artistic company in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this paper finds that this interrogation takes place on the symbolic plane of words, images, movement, and sound, all of which cohere in performances that offer middle-class audiences alternative scenarios of a pluralistic Malaysia. Its intent is to destabilize the state’s policies on racial privileging and political suppression, to create a space for free discourse, and to advocate a pluralistic Malaysia. To do …

Understanding The Potential For A Hallyu “Backlash” In Southeast Asia: A Case Study Of Consumers In Thailand, Malaysia And Philippines, Mary J. Ainslie, Sarah Domingo Lipura, Joanne B. Y. Lim Dec 2024

Understanding The Potential For A Hallyu “Backlash” In Southeast Asia: A Case Study Of Consumers In Thailand, Malaysia And Philippines, Mary J. Ainslie, Sarah Domingo Lipura, Joanne B. Y. Lim

Kritika Kultura

Korean cultural products (known as Hallyu) are now the dominant incarnation of East Asian culture throughout Southeast Asia and have introduced consumers to Korean industry, cosmetics, and culture. Recent work has concentrated heavily upon this region and the new dynamics Southeast Asian countries can offer to the study of inter-Asian cultural links, particularly during the political amalgamation of the ASEAN economic community. Yet in the more developed Southeast Asian nations of Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, there is some evidence of a rejection of and animosity towards Hallyu products from consumers who are beginning to question and disapprove of the …

Types Of Borrowings In Tagalog/Filipino, Ekaterina Baklanova Dec 2024

Types Of Borrowings In Tagalog/Filipino, Ekaterina Baklanova

Kritika Kultura

Modern Tagalog, or Filipino as the National Language, is widely famous for its high ability to adopt lexical units from various languages in contact. Through the ages it has assimilated a vast amount of borrowings, primarily from Malay, Sanskrit, Chinese, Arab and later, Spanish and English. Many linguists have contributed so far to the investigation of the borrowings in Tagalog, such as Philippine scholars G. Chan Yap, J. Francisco, A. Gonzalez, R.M. Goulet, C. Lopez, E.A. Manuel, F. Otanes, J. Panganiban, as well as Western linguists K.A. Adelaar, F. Blake, M. Haspelmath, H. Kelz, H. Kern, J.-P. Potet, P. Steinkruger, …

Optimization Of The Starch Chitosan-Based Flocculant Crosslinked By Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate On Removing Dypro 19 Textile Dye From Wastewater, Asep Nurohmat Majalis, Putri Ramadhani, Hendris Hendarsyah Kurniawan, Axel Dimaz Sanusi Pasaribu, Hafiizh Prasetia, Fitri Yuliani, Andreas Andreas, Hartati Hartati

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Dyes used in industry, especially textile dyes, are one of the water pollutants that receive much attention because they are potentially toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and generally challenging to decompose naturally. Textile dyes from wastewater can be removed through coagulation-flocculation. However, conventional coagulation-flocculation based on Fe and Al salts and synthetic polymers often leaves residual pollution. In this research, the performance of the new biopolymer-based flocculant, namely starch-ethylene glycol dimetacrylate-chitosan (SEC), which can act as coagulants and flocculants in solid-liquid separation of textile dyes, has been optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) approach. The influences of several independent variables, such …

Rethinking Safe Nurse Staffing In The Post-Covid Icu: A Comparative Analysis Of The Nurse-To-Patient Ratio And Mixed Model Approach For State Policies, Emilie A. Maxie Dec 2024

Rethinking Safe Nurse Staffing In The Post-Covid Icu: A Comparative Analysis Of The Nurse-To-Patient Ratio And Mixed Model Approach For State Policies, Emilie A. Maxie

Dissertations

The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) led to an unprecedented surge in ICU admission, increasing the nurse-to-patient ratios and intensifying stress on ICU nurses. This prompted many nurses to leave bedside care, exacerbating the ongoing nursing shortage and creating unsafe working conditions. Fourteen states have enacted safe nurse staffing policies. California implemented a mandated nurse-to-patient ratio, while Massachusetts adopted a mixed model for ICUs that involves a ratio, nurse committees, and workload tools. In post-COVID, this raises the question of which state policy approach is more effective in retaining ICU nursing staff. Literature suggests a mixed policy may be more effective.

Building Successful Justice Worker Programs: Emerging Insights From Research And Practice, Rebecca L. Sandefur, Matthew Burnett Dec 2024

Building Successful Justice Worker Programs: Emerging Insights From Research And Practice, Rebecca L. Sandefur, Matthew Burnett

Alaska Law Review

America's deep access to justice crisis has long seemed intractable. But new and potentially transformative models for giving people access to legal services and to their own law are emerging around the country. Among the most promising of these are community justice workers. These are people already trusted in their communities, such as social workers, librarians, health aides, community leaders, teachers, mediators, and everyday citizens who are trained to help people understand and act on the legal challenges involved in critical life issues. These issues implicate basic needs like nutrition, health, income security, shelter, education, and care of dependents, and …

Minimizing Infant Injury Risk By Utilizing Parental Education In A Primary Care Setting, Courtney Munroe, Erin Kuehl, Rachel Mahlberg Dec 2024

Minimizing Infant Injury Risk By Utilizing Parental Education In A Primary Care Setting, Courtney Munroe, Erin Kuehl, Rachel Mahlberg

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing

Introduction

Accidental injury and death to infants has been correlated to lack of proper education to parents of infants in the primary pediatric care setting. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and unintentional injuries were the second and third leading causes of post neonatal death during this period of time (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). Studies have found that motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of child injury and death for infants under 12 months of age. The CDC found that drowning, suffocation, and poisoning were other leading causes that contributed to child injury and death rates …

Section 230'S Immunity For Generative Artificial Intelligence, Louis Shaheen Dec 2024

Section 230'S Immunity For Generative Artificial Intelligence, Louis Shaheen

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

Congress passed Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 in response to two civil cases from New York that split on the issue of immunity for online platforms from civil liability for content posted on their websites by third parties. Congress was concerned that, without immunity, online platforms would not survive, thereby hampering the internet’s development. Congress was right; commentators have hailed Section 230 as the backbone of the internet. But as time has passed, dissidents have argued that Section 230 provides broad immunity outside the bounds of what its drafters anticipated. With the emergence of generative artificial …
