Becoming Connective: Strengthening Diversity In Nursing Education, Melanie Jacobs Dec 2024

Becoming Connective: Strengthening Diversity In Nursing Education, Melanie Jacobs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract Diversity in the nursing profession does not match the demographic of patients in the United States and correcting this mismatch could positively impact health disparities in the country. This post-intentional phenomenological study examines the current relationship between nursing education, as the pipeline into the profession, and students from underrepresented racial and ethnic (URRE) groups in the nursing profession to offer movement into the development of a stronger connection. In this qualitative study, phenomenological and poststructural tenets were used to seek the phenomenon of becoming connective, the creative tendency toward connection between URRE and nursing education. Data were generated from …

Finite Element Models For Predicting Moisture Effects On Bolt Embedment And Connection In Timber, Henry Meleki Kiwelu

Tanzania Journal of Science

The mechanical performances of timber connections are particularly important for timber engineers involved in the design of the wood structures. The mechanism of connection must be well understood in order to design a safer connection and avoid catastrophic failure. Often connections are made weak fuse elements by deliberate intent to ensure that if structural systems fail it will be by controllable ductile deformation of connections in load paths. Model method of determining engineering design capacities of laterally loaded dowel fasteners, such as bolts, screws and nails was developed. It should however be pointed out that FE and similar continuum model …

Tanzania Journal of Science

Measurements of the lifetimes of nuclear excited states need to be as accurate as possible due to their crucial role in making or verifying various theoretical predictions in the nuclear science and astrophysics. Nevertheless, metrological difficulties in these measurements have brought about controversies that significantly influence the quest to understand the atomic structure, decay processes and nuclear reactions. Among the obstacles are the accuracy and precision of the systems and techniques used for measuring the lifetime of an excited state. It follows that any hypothesis regarding the nuclear behavior can only be considerable upon verification and accountability of stability and …

Neoliberalism, Neofeudalism, And Precarity: A Response To Albena Azmanova And Jodi Dean, Panos Tsoukalis

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This is a response to the articles of Albena Azmanova and Jodi Dean included in this issue, exploring the intersections and divergences in their analyses of contemporary capitalism. I argue that the lens of neofeudalism that Jodi Dean invites us to entertain can offer a different explanation of Albena Azmanova’s diagnosis of contemporary capitalism. Notably, I propose that capitalism’s neofeudalising tendencies contribute to the rise of inequality, the decline of class politics, and the increase of monopoly power. Contrary to Jodi Dean though, I will claim that there were two crucial transformations of contemporary capitalism that spearheaded the emergence of …

A Comment On Immanent Critique, Ideology, And Power, Enzo Rossi Dec 2024

A Comment On Immanent Critique, Ideology, And Power, Enzo Rossi

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

All contributors to the Radical Critical Theory Circle's symposium ‘Thinking Capitalism in the 21st Century" highlight deficiencies in mainstream critical theory’s analysis of capitalism, but also point to some possible avenues of renewal. This this brief commentary focuses on how one should understand immanent critique—and in particular empirically-grounded versions of immanent critique. The piece's main contentions are that critique should rediscover its high modernist vocation as a Wissenschaft, and that a radical realist approach can uncover new ways for political theory to expose the most important power structures in society.

Universality, Necessity, And Progress: Marx And The Problem Of History, Amy Allen Dec 2024

Universality, Necessity, And Progress: Marx And The Problem Of History, Amy Allen

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

To offer a compelling critique of the present, critical theory needs an account of capitalism that foregrounds its interrelation with the ongoing legacies of colonialism, imperialism, and slavery. To serve as a resource for such an account, Marx’s critique of capitalism and his theory of history need to be disentangled. This analysis revisits the problems of universality, necessity, and progress in Marx’s work in order to show how Marx’s consistently dialectical and critical account of capitalist modernity can be emancipated from the historicist framework that undergirds it.

Ai-Driven Dynamic Pilot Placement For 5g Mmwave Massive Mimo: A Random Forest Regression Approach, Mohammad R. Abou Yassin, Soubhi Abo Chahine, Hamza Issa

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

Efficient pilot placement in 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is critical to enhancing performance, achieving high spectral efficiency (SE), low bit error rate (BER), reduced pilot overhead, and minimized latency. However, this requires pilot symbols transmission, which occupies spectral resources and results in reducing spectral efficiency (SE). This paper proposes a novel dynamic pilot placement (DPP) framework, optimized using a Random Forest Regression (RFR) approach, to enhance system performance. Unlike traditional static and semi-static pilot allocation methods, the DPP approach dynamically adjusts pilot positions based on real-time channel state information (CSI) and system requirements, reducing interference and …

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

Limb or organ loss of human remains challenging especially in the world of incessant reliance on touch-based screens and tasks. Thereby, patients can barely withstand and cope with the augmenting restrictions that they encounter due to this loss. Modern means and technologies, such as advanced and artificial parts reduced restrictions on patients with disabilities or a lost limb or organ. Hand prostheses, for instance, provided a powerful tool for improving the functional capabilities of human limbs, thereby improving the quality of life of the user. However, patients using prosthetic arms are still encountering numerous problems, such as, suffering from intact …

Do The Math: Your Social Security Benefit, Bobby Moyer Dec 2024

Do The Math: Your Social Security Benefit, Bobby Moyer

Virginia Dental Journal

Most Americans rely on Social Security for retirement support, but many do not fully understand the implications of when to start receiving benefits. Claiming benefits early at age 62 can reduce the overall amount, while delaying can increase it by 8% annually. Factors like health, life expectancy, and income needs should be considered. Full retirement age is between 66 and 67 for most. Widows and divorced individuals may be eligible for additional benefits. Consulting with an advisor is recommended to optimize Social Security benefits.

A Novel Format For Math Circles: Circles With No Center, Frederick A. Peck, Ian P. Renga, Nick Grener, David R. Erickson, Matt B. Roscoe, Ke Wu

Journal of Math Circles

This paper shares a novel format for Math Circles, which we call “circles with no center.” Circles with no center do not have a traditional facilitator. The problem or activity is novel to everyone in the room. All members engage in mathematical inquiry, and everyone takes responsibility for running the gathering. The “no center” format has benefits for participants and organizers. For participants, the format offers more freedom and more responsibility. For organizers, the format is easier to organize, more fun, and involves less pressure. Our assessment of a 3-day retreat for teachers suggests participants may prefer a circle with …

Hot Wages: How Do Heat Waves Change The Earnings Distribution?, Giulia Valenti, Francesco Vona Dec 2024

Hot Wages: How Do Heat Waves Change The Earnings Distribution?, Giulia Valenti, Francesco Vona

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We investigate the impact of heat waves on individual earnings using retrospective panel data (SHARE) matched with high-resolution weather data (E-OBS), covering over 32000 workers across 14 European countries (1955–2019) from diverse sectors and occupations. Exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in heat wave exposure across cohorts within the same generation and region, and controlling for individual fixed effects, occupational sorting, and covariate balance, we find each additional heat wave day reduces earnings by 0.31%. Losses are larger in outdoor, manual, and clerical occupations, disproportionately affecting lower-income workers and those from disadvantaged family backgrounds, but are mitigated in countries with centralized collective …

Identifying The Types Of Collective Engagement Structures That Manifest In Middle Grade Mathematics Classrooms, Tye G. Campbell, Michael A. Lawson, Erin Rich, Sheunghyun Yeo, W. Boden Robertson

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

While the potential of collaborative problem solving in mathematics is well known, facilitating effective group work is often challenging. One reason for this persistent difficulty educators face with collaborative problem solving can be traced to research and practice models that are not well-equipped to attend to the complexity of group work. The emerging construct of “collective engagement structures” represents one novel framework designed to attend to the complexity and variation of individual and group experience in collaborative problem solving. This study extends initial theorizing on collective engagement by offering descriptive accounts of the different types of collective engagement structures that …

An Analysis Of Charity Care Policy In Virginia And Recommendations For The Future, Victoria Richardson Dec 2024

An Analysis Of Charity Care Policy In Virginia And Recommendations For The Future, Victoria Richardson

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Virginia’s uninsured rate has dropped significantly since Medicaid expansion, but statewide gaps in coverage remain, especially among communities of color and for those transitioning from Medicaid to Medicare at age sixty-five. Accordingly, greater utilization of charity care is necessary to prevent the most vulnerable Virginians from experiencing crippling medical debt—debt they may by unable to pay due to limited resources.

Unfortunately, charity care requirements for providers suffer from a lack of clarity and accountability at both the state and federal level. This article surveys the current laws and regulations that govern charity care in Virginia and highlights problems that prevent …
