Maladaptive behaviors during a disaster refer to actions that do not benefit the individual or society. Quarantelli highlights several maladaptive behaviors myths associated with disasters: widespread antisocial behavior, passivity, role conflict or abandonment, and sudden widespread mental health breakdowns (1). Despite early work reporting these myths, the common perception is that maladaptive behaviors such as rioting, looting, panic, and criminal conduct are prevalent in the wake of disasters. This is despite research by de Ville de Goyet and Arnold which has called on public officials and the media to stop propagating false disaster myths (2, 3). The classic academic response …
The Ncaa's Challenge In Determining Nil Market Value, Meg Penrose
The Ncaa's Challenge In Determining Nil Market Value, Meg Penrose
Faculty Scholarship
This Article proceeds in three parts. Part II discusses the changes that NIL has wrought in college athletics. It briefly explains collectives and their impact on NIL. Part III discusses the impossibility of limiting athletes’ “fair market value” given market value depends on what the market is willing to pay. Congress has failed to pass national legislation. Yet the mosaic of state laws is simply unfit to stand in for national legislation. And, following multiple litigation losses, the NCAA cannot be trusted to “value” the athletes themselves. Market value, if one is to be established, must be uniform and assessed …

Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UASs) are being utilized throughout the disaster and emergency response domain, including in wildland firefighting operations. While UASs can offer safety benefits in comparison to crewed aircraft, such as removing the human pilot from the vehicle so that they are not exposed to the same risks and the ability to operate in low-visibility conditions, they are not without tradeoffs. For example, it can be challenging for UAS pilots (UASPs) to build situation awareness of the airspace in which their UAS is operating. In order to address some of the challenges associated with using UASs and provide greater …

From employment to education, many areas of our daily lives have gone virtual, including the virtual workplace and virtual classes. By comparison, the way we generate, deliver, and consume electricity is an anachronism. And the electric industry’s outdated business model and regulatory framework are failing. For the last century-and-a-half, we have relied on ever larger power plants to generate the electricity we consume, often hundreds of miles away from the point of production. But the outsized carbon footprint of these power plants and the need to transmit their output over long distances threaten the electric grid’s reliability, affordability, and long-term …

There are many potential approaches to marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), of which ocean iron fertilization (OIF) has the longest history of study. However, OIF studies to date were not primarily designed to quantify the durability of carbon (C) storage, nor how wise OIF might be as an mCDR approach. To quantify C sequestration, we introduce a metric called the “centennial tonne,” defined as 1,000 kg of C isolated from atmospheric contact for on average at least 100 years. We present the activities needed to assess OIF from a scientific and technological perspective, and additionally, how it might be responsibly …

Sample Sizes For 10 Types Of Qualitative Data Analysis: An Integrative Review, Empirical Guidance, And Next Steps, Amber Wutich, Melissa Beresford, H. Russell Bernard
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
There has been a recent explosion of articles on minimum sample sizes needed for analyzing qualitative data. The purpose of this integrated review is to examine this literature for 10 types of qualitative data analysis (5 types of saturation and 5 common methods). Building on established reviews and expanding to new methods, our findings extract the following sample size guidelines: theme saturation (9 interviews; 4 focus groups), meaning saturation (24 interviews; 8 focus groups), theoretical saturation (20–30+ interviews), metatheme saturation (20–40 interviews per site), and saturation in salience (10 exhaustive free lists); two methods where power analysis determines sample size: …
The Role Of Paradata In Algorithmic Accountability, Ciaran B. Trace, James A. Hodges
The Role Of Paradata In Algorithmic Accountability, Ciaran B. Trace, James A. Hodges
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This chapter examines how the doings of the algorithm (instantiated through its operations, actions, and steps) and its accompanying algorithmic system are revealed and explored through an engagement with the paradata created as a part of this data-making effort. In doing so, the chapter explores how the concept of paradata helps us understand how information professionals and domain stakeholders conceptualize accountable algorithmic entities and how this influences how they emerge as documented and describable entities. Two complementary frameworks for capturing and preserving paradata for accountability purposes are examined in the process. The first is associated with diplomatic theory and archival …
Absorbent Minds: Challenging Utopia Through Atmospheric Architecture, Kaitlyn Marie Bridgeman
Absorbent Minds: Challenging Utopia Through Atmospheric Architecture, Kaitlyn Marie Bridgeman
Architecture Theses
Since the time of John Amos Comenius the way in which we teach has remained constant. A simplified metaphor for learning amplifies the argument that the view of early education is in a utopian state. When in reality the curriculum is a mold to fit learners into, that prepares them to become a cog in the wheel we call the workforce. The goal is to combat this problem using principles from both the Maria Montessori and Reggio Emilia approaches to learning to create an atmosphere that inspires learners and allows for the flourishing of creativity and self-discovery. This thesis aims …

Habitat Ukraine: A Modular, Mass Timber Housing Approach To Help Rebuild Ukraine, Andrew Tovsen
Architecture Theses
Fear. Destruction. Suffering. These are the words that come to mind upon the mention of the current conflict that the nation and people of Ukraine are submerged in. Millions of them have been forced to leave behind their livelihoods for safety, greatly damaging their financial and general well-being. Though the fighting still rages on, one day it will come to an end. This begs the question: how will these individuals and families be able to return to their native places from which they have been suddenly torn? Habitat Ukraine explores and proposes a permanent, semi-modular housing design approach focused on …

The Persistent Treatise, Dana Neacsu, Paul Douglas Callister
Law Faculty Publications
The legal treatise remains a pillar of the American legal system and the rule of law, despite claims it might be dying and variations in quantitative citations to treatises over time. Indeed, several treatises evidence increased citation in U.S. Supreme Court opinions during the last several decades. Surprisingly, the U.S. Supreme Court, including the Robert’s Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, increasingly sees fit to rely on proto-treatises, such as Bracton, Coke, and Blackstone. This article provides empirical data and qualitative analysis to support this claim, highlighting the sometimes declining but nevertheless significant presence of treatises in …

Not every title can be found in the law library catalogs and so some titles are listed according to the titles …
Beyond Memory: A Person-Centered Approach To Dementia Design, Samantha Quaal
Beyond Memory: A Person-Centered Approach To Dementia Design, Samantha Quaal
Architecture Theses
At some point in each of our lives, a loved one or even ourselves will end up in some assisted living facility. Today, there is a negative connotation behind senior care facilities; they are portrayed by having drab interiors mixed with the faint sounds of squeaky wheelchairs that echo long, stale hallways. The population of older adults in the world is constantly growing, and a profound number of them have a form of memory loss like Alzheimer’s. How can we design a senior living center that makes those with Alzheimer’s feel safe and keep their minds active? How can we …
A Landscape For Play: An Exploration Of Sensory Architecture Solutions For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Judith Irva Frelich
A Landscape For Play: An Exploration Of Sensory Architecture Solutions For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Judith Irva Frelich
Architecture Theses
In the kaleidoscope of human experiences, the sensory realm unfolds as a tapestry that uniquely colors our perceptions of the world. For children navigating the intricate landscape of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this tapestry takes on profound significance as their sensory sensitivities can both illuminate and obscure the path to understanding and learning. The concept of sensory architecture combined with the ‘neuro-typical’ approach presents an innovative and promising solution to developing inclusive spaces for children with ASD. Influenced by ‘the play of light’ and ‘the play of the waves,’ this thesis aims to create an understanding of dynamic interaction, freedom …
Housing And The Construction Labor Shortage: Designing For Jobs In Duluth, Mn, Dawson Alexander Broman
Housing And The Construction Labor Shortage: Designing For Jobs In Duluth, Mn, Dawson Alexander Broman
Architecture Theses
This thesis examines the implication of modular timber framing as a design response to the construction labor shortage in Duluth MN. Drawing on the impact of tourism in Duluth and its impact on the housing market, increasing investment in the city is pushing up real estate prices, and in turn changing what buyers are willing to spend on construction labor. Because of this, labor wages remain uncompetitive because of rising real estate and material costs. This thesis explores the use of modular heavy timber as a local resource with minimal manufacturing expenses, intended to bring more money into the construction …

Revitalizing Ghosts: Breathing New Life Into Disused Developments To Foster Resilience, Hailey Macheledt
Architecture Theses
This thesis aims to study the “intangible connector” and apply it to a master plan development. The “intangible connector” are the words used to describe the feeling, the pull, and the attachment people have to a place. The idea of figuring out what is the connector for people and buildings. Taking these key factors that make up this connection, then applying them to a new site development design. Landscapes and environments should not be limited to nature, but continued through what is designed in the built environment. A sense of place, human scale, and taking cues from the natural world …
Enability: How Architecture Can Enable The Disabled, Piper Krenik
Enability: How Architecture Can Enable The Disabled, Piper Krenik
Architecture Theses
Enability is designing with empathy from the very beginning of a design. It incorporates design strategies for a variety of disabilities, as well as tackling the difficulties that are known to disproportionately affect those with disabilities, such as employment and access to childcare. It features a community center, located in Rochester, Minnesota, that incorporates a full restaurant and childcare center with the goal of providing both services as well as employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the area. By considering as many aspects as possible it is hoped that this community center can be an example of how architects …
The Future Of Education: Combining Libraries And Museums, Mark Alan Iii Geiss
The Future Of Education: Combining Libraries And Museums, Mark Alan Iii Geiss
Architecture Theses
Archives and their specializations have existed within our societies for hundreds of years, adapting alongside their communities until the advent of the digital age where their physical presence was thrown into question. Can archives such as libraries and museums be integrated through a system that overlaps these specializations in way beyond sharing a structure? In modern times, these spaces compete with businesses in providing a neutral location to further oneself outside of the context of work or home. Exacerbated through problems in American developments lacking third places, especially free to access ones, what facilities that are accessible may be able …
Stories Of Separation: Reunifying The Emotional Border Of The Korean 38th Parallel, Samuel Lee Nelson
Stories Of Separation: Reunifying The Emotional Border Of The Korean 38th Parallel, Samuel Lee Nelson
Architecture Theses
When encountering conditions with unknown aspects, it is an impulse to occupy them with experiences and memories to alleviate the associated feelings and reach a form of understanding. This thesis explores how our understandings are influenced and establish a precedent for architectural interventions to assist in resolving the conditions of the unknown. Following World War II (WWII), the 38th parallel marked the beginning of the separation of the Koreas before it developed into the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Contrasting the stagnant characteristics of this physical division, the emotional division in Korea has continuously evolved and shifted throughout the years. Designed in …
A Translation Of Art: How Architecture Infused With Music Educates Humankind, Kamryn Nicole Brecht
A Translation Of Art: How Architecture Infused With Music Educates Humankind, Kamryn Nicole Brecht
Architecture Theses
During the 18th century, humans started to perceive the world around them differently. Structures were designed with the assumption that the meaning of the building would follow afterwards, instead of building with initial purpose. The world we reside in is now full of buildings that are cheaply constructed, unaesthetic, and not serving the needs of a site or its corresponding community. To return to architecture with meaning, architecture must once again be used as a narration for human life. This thesis is a study on how the art of music can be translated into the field of architecture in a …
Illuminating Connections: A Theatrical Intervention In Urban Loneliness, Carter J. Huber
Illuminating Connections: A Theatrical Intervention In Urban Loneliness, Carter J. Huber
Architecture Theses
Amidst the hustle of urban life, an epidemic of loneliness grips our modern cities, casting shadows upon the once vibrant display of community. Before the 19th century, public spaces thrived as stages where every encounter was a theatrical exchange, a space to recognize oneself through the presence of others. However, the cityscape shifted with time, veiling the human connection behind privatization and specialization. This project intertwines theater and urban intervention to capture the fleeting moments of human connection. Each scene serves as a bridge between solitude and community, inviting audiences to rediscover the beauty of shared experiences. Through storytelling, we …

Building Blocks Towards New Education, Gaius Josiah D. Arroyo
Architecture Theses
The purpose of this research is to look at the effects digital technologies have had on education and explore ways educational facilities can react to these new technologies in the form of how we look at learning spaces. The goal with this thesis is not for it to be a guide but rather as a point of inspiration for educational facilities and designers. With the advancing development of digital technology, educational facilities are tasked with adapting to a society that has digital technology deeply ingrained in it. Educators and designers have a great opportunity to reevaluate our learning spaces and …
Cosmic Curiosities And Earthy Wonders: A Sensuous Reimagining Of The Denver Museum Of Nature And Science, Brady Kowalzek
Cosmic Curiosities And Earthy Wonders: A Sensuous Reimagining Of The Denver Museum Of Nature And Science, Brady Kowalzek
Architecture Theses
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science envisions a transformation that acknowledges our connection to nature, aiming to deepen our understanding of this relationship. This transformation stems from the belief that humans are part of nature, not its conquerors. The museum has achieved LEED Platinum certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. However, critics argue it serves more as a testament to human achievements than as a sanctuary for nature, missing the chance to integrate with its surrounding environment. To address this, the proposed transformation emphasizes architectural design in harmony with nature, moving away from mere mechanical …
Designing For Shared Spaces: An Approach To Enhancing Animal Welfare And Foster Human-Animal Connections Through Compassionate Design, Isabella Nyseth
Designing For Shared Spaces: An Approach To Enhancing Animal Welfare And Foster Human-Animal Connections Through Compassionate Design, Isabella Nyseth
Architecture Theses
The provided research conveys the problems being faced in animal shelters that were influenced by COVID-19 and how it impacted the overcrowding rates driven by the rise in pet relinquishment numbers and lack of social response by humans. Due to the lack of proper awareness and standards for shelters, animal welfare is not being observed, causing placement in inhumane environments, triggering severe stress, and causing mental/physical deterioration. Animal welfare is suffering because of the lack of human response for animal life. These situations that are impacting animal well-being have greatly increased because people are less willing to connect to animals …

Living Library: How Stories Told Through Architecture Can Strengthen Communities And The People Within Them, Mariah Kate Zeien
Architecture Theses
Story has been passed down through generations, carrying with it the history and teachings of diverse groups of people. Storytelling has evolved to fit into an ever-changing society, trying to adapt and stay prevalent in it. With the ever-widening distance between strangers today, many stories and storytelling opportunities are being lost. Architecture is no longer being used as a tool to tell stories and provide places for stories to be told. The connections and spaces that once brought people from all walks of life together do not exist as they once did. The living library is an intervention, providing a …
