Policy Assessment Of Fisheries Management In The Face Of Climate Change: Implications For The New England Fishery Management Council, Grace Omer Jan 2024

Policy Assessment Of Fisheries Management In The Face Of Climate Change: Implications For The New England Fishery Management Council, Grace Omer

Open Access Master's Theses

A comparative policy analysis was conducted to examine the current efforts, priorities, and goals for climate adaptive fisheries management at the Federal, Regional, and State level from 2014-2024 by categorizing the resulting documents into 4 climate adaptive management elements. We are currently encountering a novel challenge in effectively responding to environmental changes resulting from the effects of climate change. This study establishes the expectations of the Federal and State governments and how the New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) is responding to those expectations. The federal government (through documents, legislation, and Executive Orders) has established a low bar of expectations, …

Music-For-The-State: Hegemony, Culture Production, And Creative Labor In Us Army Music, Michael S. Grenier Jan 2024

Music-For-The-State: Hegemony, Culture Production, And Creative Labor In Us Army Music, Michael S. Grenier

Open Access Master's Theses

Analyzing the historical development and ideological underpinnings of the regulatory and doctrinal texts that make up the US Army’s Body of Knowledge, this paper offers a critical theory interpretation of Army lore as a mediating device for the Army State Apparatus. The lore enshrined in the Body of Knowledge reinforces the needs of the State by setting the conditions and expectations for Army Musicians. Examining how Army Musicians are hailed by the lore as always-already Army Musicians as such, the paper builds up to an analysis of Army Music as a labor system of culture production, ultimately positioning the Army …

Probing The Anoxic World Of Coastal Marine Sediments In New England: Understanding The Novel Partnership Between Protists And Their Bacterial Symbionts, Raúl A. Gutiérrez Jan 2024

Probing The Anoxic World Of Coastal Marine Sediments In New England: Understanding The Novel Partnership Between Protists And Their Bacterial Symbionts, Raúl A. Gutiérrez

Open Access Master's Theses

In the oxygen-depleted environments of New England's coastal marine sediment, microbial communities engage in symbiotic interactions to overcome energy deficiencies from oxygen limitation. Among these interactions, ciliates, known for their ability to form diverse symbiotic relationships, play a prominent role. The ciliated protozoa, Metopus sp. commonly form symbiotic relationships with bacteria and archaea that support their fermentative metabolism (Fenchel and Finlay, 1995), though the diversity of these partnerships, particularly in the ocean, is poorly known. To gain insights into the interactions between Metopus ciliate cultures and their microbial partners, we employed Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization (FISH) with species-specific probes. We …

Testing The Ontogenetic Migration Hypothesis In The Emerging Rhode Island Jonah Crab (Cancer Borealis) Fishery Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Lindsay Agvent Jan 2024

Testing The Ontogenetic Migration Hypothesis In The Emerging Rhode Island Jonah Crab (Cancer Borealis) Fishery Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Lindsay Agvent

Open Access Master's Theses

In southern New England, rapid ocean warming over the past two decades has caused substantial redistributions of fishes, invertebrates, and the fisheries they support. The rapid emergence of the warm water-tolerant Jonah crab (Cancer borealis) fishery, once discarded as bycatch from the now declining lobster fishery, illustrates a prime example of climate-adaptive shifts in southern New England fisheries. However, limited data exist on the basic life history of Jonah crab, despite their growing economic and societal value. This lack of knowledge hinders ocean management capacity to meet multiple ecological, economic, and socio-cultural goals of sustainable harvest. Off the …

Benthic Landers In Oceanography – The Design And Justification Of A Multi-Use Novel Benthic Lander System, David M. Nadeau Jan 2024

Benthic Landers In Oceanography – The Design And Justification Of A Multi-Use Novel Benthic Lander System, David M. Nadeau

Open Access Master's Theses

Benthic lander systems can empower researchers with access to long-term high-resolution data streams in challenging to access marine environments. In recent years, landers have emerged as key components for oceanographic research, particularly in the deep ocean due to their ability to work autonomously over long periods. However, these systems are expensive and complex, requiring specialized equipment and knowledge to design, develop, deploy, and recover that reduces broad accessibility to ocean data. Lightweight, cost effective, and multi-use benthic lander systems have the potential to provide economical platforms that reduce logistical barriers to support the next generation of oceanographic research. This project …

Examining The Narratives, Misinformation, And Delay Tactics In Newspaper Coverage Of Offshore Wind Development In Relation To Whale Strandings On The East Coast Of The United States, Rafeed Hussain Jan 2024

Examining The Narratives, Misinformation, And Delay Tactics In Newspaper Coverage Of Offshore Wind Development In Relation To Whale Strandings On The East Coast Of The United States, Rafeed Hussain

Open Access Master's Theses

The United States set a goal to develop 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy by 2030 as an ocean-based method to decarbonize the energy grid to combat climate change (The White House, 2021). The problem is that certain opposition groups are adopting delay and misinformation strategies to dissuade offshore wind development (Dunlap & Brulle, 2020; Supran & Oreskes, 2021; Climate and Development Lab, 2023; Slevin et al., 2023) by conflating actual environmental impacts (BOEM & NOAA Fisheries, 2024) with an unusual mortality event of North Atlantic Right Whales and humpback whales on the East Coast of the United States …

Underwater Vehicle Maneuvering With A Singlebladed Propeller, Benjamin C. S. Rahming Jan 2024

Underwater Vehicle Maneuvering With A Singlebladed Propeller, Benjamin C. S. Rahming

Open Access Master's Theses

Current convention in underwater vehicle propulsion utilizes a symmetrical propeller with fins or additional thrusters for maneuvering. These systems can become mechanically and electronically complex requiring multiple sensors and actuators such as motors, motor controllers, encoders and water tight seals. This creates many failure modes. Conversely, an asymmetrical propeller has fewer failure modes as the propeller can maneuver the vehicle by itself. By varying the speed of the blade within the rotation, the resulting force imbalance creates a turning moment in addition to forward thrust. This thesis designs, develops and utilizes a test bed to decipher the six axis dynamic …

Comparative Analysis Of Smartwatch Data In Children With Adhd And Non-Adhd, Friederike Hicking Jan 2024

Comparative Analysis Of Smartwatch Data In Children With Adhd And Non-Adhd, Friederike Hicking

Open Access Master's Theses

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which often lead to significant challenges in academic and social settings. Diagnostic methods for ADHD rely on subjective assessments which are prone to bias. Researchers have explored technology-based objective assessment methods to help diagnose ADHD. In particular, this thesis investigates behavioral differences between children with ADHD and neurotypical children (6-11 years old) using smartwatch data collected from both hands during various classroom-like activities including drawing, math and English worksheets, and magnetic tiles puzzles. The primary objective is to identify distinct behavioral patterns to enhance …

Lidar Sensing Systems: A Viable Approach To Near-Field Wave Elevation Measurements, Megan Gimple

Open Access Master's Theses

Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), which operate in uncertain and irregular sea states, face challenges such as unpredictable loading and unloading of the structure, potentially reducing their operational lifespan. As the offshore wind energy industry moves farther from shore to access stronger wind resources, there is a growing need for reliable remote sensing methods for measuring wave elevations, to ensure the stability and longevity of these floating turbines. This thesis investigates the potential of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology as a reliable method for near-field ocean surface elevation measurements. A series of controlled laboratory experiments and field tests conducted …

Helicsauto: Automating The Development Of Cyber-Physical Co-Simulation Framework For Smart Grids, Sayeb Mohammad Tadvin Jan 2024

Helicsauto: Automating The Development Of Cyber-Physical Co-Simulation Framework For Smart Grids, Sayeb Mohammad Tadvin

Open Access Master's Theses

Modern smart grids are evolving into more complex systems than conventional power grids. Intelligent electronic devices equipped with off-the-shelf computing and communication technologies within the distribution and transmission systems of the power grids are replacing legacy sensors and actuators in conventional bulk power grids. Significant disparities between the characteristics of cyber and physical components of smart grids create substantial challenges for analyzing the runtime states of grids and planning for long-term stability.

Co-simulation is an essential tool for analyzing the behavior of modern smart grids. In co-simulation, various subsystems or components of large complex systems like smart grids are modeled …

Explaining The Similarities Between Anti-Plastic Pollution Ordinances In Rhode Island Towns, Alyssa Parise Jan 2024

Explaining The Similarities Between Anti-Plastic Pollution Ordinances In Rhode Island Towns, Alyssa Parise

Open Access Master's Theses

Marine plastic pollution is a serious and escalating issue. In response, many towns and cities in Rhode Island have created ordinances to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in our waters and land. These ordinances are surprisingly similar, even though towns have distinct cultures and demographics. What factors explain the similarities and differences between these ordinances? What can those factors tell us about future expansion and adoption of anti-plastic pollution ordinances across the state? This thesis analyzes local ordinances and meeting minutes to generate questions for supplementary interviews with town/city council members. The research is framed by theories of local …

Preventive Genetic Screening: Genetics And Ethics, Elena Vinton Jan 2024

Preventive Genetic Screening: Genetics And Ethics, Elena Vinton

Scripps Senior Theses

For completion of my dual thesis at Scripps College in Biology and Bioethics, I analyzed the feasibility of preventive genetic screening both ethically and genetically. Because each discipline approaches academic inquiry differently, I decided to ask two sequential questions: (1) How are variants analyzed in preventive genetic screening? (Biology) (2) Do patients who undergo preventive genetic screening have the ‘right not to know’ their genetic status – including medically actionable genetic information? (Bioethics). I have separated my ethical and biological inquiries into two sections. The first section is an ethical inquiry into the justification of the ‘right not to know’ …

The Favela Blossoms: Voices Of Favelas In São Paulo, Brazil, Vasti Cruz Jan 2024

The Favela Blossoms: Voices Of Favelas In São Paulo, Brazil, Vasti Cruz

Scripps Senior Theses

This project spotlights improvised housing in the peripheral areas of São Paulo, Brazil, better known as favelas. For over a century, the favela has been known as a place of death, violence, crime, and oppression. Paradoxically, the first favelas in Rio de Janeiro were named after a plant that produces flowers. However, today, these communities are rarely compared to their beautiful, symbolic-of-life namesake. Instead, this prejudgement is rampant not only globally, but also within the proper city– which perpetuates social division. When favelas are discussed in the media, they often reference those in Rio de Janeiro; however, favelas are present …

Communicating Through Dance: Examining Dance & Behavioral Therapy To Treat Selective Mutism, Clara Spitz Jan 2024

Communicating Through Dance: Examining Dance & Behavioral Therapy To Treat Selective Mutism, Clara Spitz

Scripps Senior Theses

Very little research has been done to examine the efficacy of treatments for adolescents with selective mutism (SM). Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been distinguished as one of the optimal treatment styles for SM, a significant portion of research in this area has focused on children. Additionally, it often incorporates play therapy, which may not necessarily apply as effectively to older populations. Dance therapy has emerged as a promising and innovative treatment for various anxiety and communication issues. Although specific studies on its application to SM are limited, existing research suggests its potential effectiveness in addressing this condition as …

Resilience Amidst Barriers: Understanding The Plight Of Undocumented Filipino Tnts In The Broken Us Immigration System, Eileen Linchangco Jan 2024

Resilience Amidst Barriers: Understanding The Plight Of Undocumented Filipino Tnts In The Broken Us Immigration System, Eileen Linchangco

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines the plight of undocumented Filipino immigrants, referred to as “TNT” or “tago nang tago” (hiding and hiding), within the context of an increasingly restrictive US immigration system. I argue that two key factors have driven more Filipinos to pursue unauthorized entry into the US since the 1980s despite heightened risks. First, US immigration policy changes enacted in the 1980s and 1990s implemented stricter numerical caps that severely limited available visas for Filipino immigrants to use legal immigration pathways into the United States. Second, enduring sociocultural constructs propagate the notion that Filipinos represent immigrant desirability for US citizenship. …

What's Up With White Women?: Anti-Feminist Resistance To Second-Wave Feminism And The Rise Of The Conservative Woman, Sadie N. Matz Jan 2024

What's Up With White Women?: Anti-Feminist Resistance To Second-Wave Feminism And The Rise Of The Conservative Woman, Sadie N. Matz

Scripps Senior Theses

A staggering number of White women voted for Trump in 2016. Why did this demographic, whose racial and gender identity so closely resembled that of the Democratic candidate, deny themselves descriptive representation in the Oval Office? A closer look at the political history of feminism and anti-feminism reveals that these results should not have been surprising. The sexual liberation movement of the 1960s, the fight over the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, and the rise of neoliberalism in the 1980s cultivated an environment that made political conservatism attractive to White women of the 20th century, priming White women …

Diagnostic Utility Of The 23-Gene Expression Profile Test For An Atypical Intradermal Melanocytic Proliferation, Etan Marks, Anais A. Badia, Matthew S. Goldberg Jan 2024

Diagnostic Utility Of The 23-Gene Expression Profile Test For An Atypical Intradermal Melanocytic Proliferation, Etan Marks, Anais A. Badia, Matthew S. Goldberg

GME Publications

Ancillary tests such as immunohistochemistry (IHC) and gene expression profile (GEP) testing may be needed to arrive at a definitive diagnosis for some atypical melanocytic neoplasms. A 34-year-old male with a family history of melanoma presented with a large, heterogeneous melanocytic lesion on the cheek. Histopathological review of two biopsies revealed an atypical intradermal melanocytic proliferation with spitzoid features without ulceration or regression. Scattered mitotic figures were identified. In addition to performing SOX10 IHC, PRAME and HMB45 staining highlighted weak, patchy positivity that was stronger in superficial, pleomorphic melanocytes (Ki-67, 5-7% mitotic rate). Based on these concerning but ambiguous IHC …

The Modern Way To Write A Statute Is To Tell A Story, Richard K. Neumann Jr. Jan 2024

The Modern Way To Write A Statute Is To Tell A Story, Richard K. Neumann Jr.

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Except for the United States, the English-speaking world has been moving toward writing statutes as stories with characters and plot tensions. British statutes are the most advanced in this respect.

To illustrate the British method, the key statutes in the Mar-a-Lago Indictment are redrafted in this article to resemble the form they would take if recently enacted by Parliament. l compare the statutes and the redrafts side-by-side. And I do the same thing with two sections of the Electoral Count Act, which governs what Congress does on every January 6 following a presidential election year.

The article explains how the …

The Vitruvian Shareholder, Sergio Alberto Gramitto Ricci Jan 2024

The Vitruvian Shareholder, Sergio Alberto Gramitto Ricci

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The proportions of Leonardo's Vitruvian Man allow the human figure to fit a circle and a square, which in Renaissance iconography represent respectively the secular and divine dimensions. Good canons allow for a proportionate and simultaneous coexistence of the two natures of humankind. Human shareholders have two natures, too: one as investors and one as human beings. Similar to the Vitruvian Man, a shareholder with good proportions fits a metaphorical circle and a metaphorical square: the former represents the human dimension, and the latter represents the investor. I dub retail investors who proportionately balance their interests as human beings who …

After Smith Falls: Corporate Free Exercise Lochnerism, Daniel J.H. Greenwood, Nicholas E. Tramposch Jan 2024

After Smith Falls: Corporate Free Exercise Lochnerism, Daniel J.H. Greenwood, Nicholas E. Tramposch

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

While the Supreme Court has extended many constitutional privileges to business corporations, it has not held that they have a full constitutionally protected right to practice religion comparable to that of citizens. Employment Division v. Smith long served as a barrier to Free Exercise claims for special exceptions to neutral and generally applicable laws. But as the Court moves away from Smith, the issue of corporate Free Exercise rights must be confronted. The freedom of religion is a critically important individual right in a free country. But individual rights often conflict with collective religious practice; religious freedom is the opposite …

Ai And The Regulation Of Tax Return Preparers, Linda Galler, Jay A. Soled Jan 2024

Ai And The Regulation Of Tax Return Preparers, Linda Galler, Jay A. Soled

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Tax return preparers play a pivotal role for millions of taxpayers, and

their number ranges in the hundreds of thousands. Despite preparers'

importance in the tax return submission process and their numerical size,

they are largely unregulated. Because of this lack of oversight, a significant

number of tax returnp reparersp ut their ownfinanciali nterests and

those of their clients ahead of the government's financial interests.

In the past, there have been calls for increased regulatory

oversight to keep wayward practitioners' actions in check. Therefore,

a decade and a half ago, Congress, in conjunction with the Treasury

Legislating Flexibility In The Post-Pandemic Workplace, Madeleine Gyory Jan 2024

Legislating Flexibility In The Post-Pandemic Workplace, Madeleine Gyory

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Working parents and caregivers in the United States struggle to balance the dual demands of work and care. Many working caregivers need flexible work arrangements (FWAs)-changes to their hours, schedule, or location-to allow them to balance work and care. But access to flexibility remains out of reach for many workers and is least accessible to the most marginalized. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored this problem, as huge numbers of women dropped out of the workforce to care for family. While no federal or state law requires employers to grant FWAs to caregivers, several states and localities have passed "right to request" …

Developing A Competency-Based Outcomes Framework For Doctor Of Physical Therapy Education, Catherine T. Schmidt, Sara Knox, Jane Baldwin, K. Douglas Gross, Jackie Tang, Diane U. Jette Jan 2024

Developing A Competency-Based Outcomes Framework For Doctor Of Physical Therapy Education, Catherine T. Schmidt, Sara Knox, Jane Baldwin, K. Douglas Gross, Jackie Tang, Diane U. Jette

Health Professions Education

Purpose. Physical therapist education programs rely on outcomes to evaluate a student’s competence in performing skills essential to the physical therapy profession. However, current outcomes, such as, graduation, employment, and licensure pass rates fail to assess comprehensive competence in the professional abilities of a physical therapist and offer variability in the expectations of competence in professional practice. Competency-based education (CBE) offers a learner-centered and evidence-based process to assess performance on consensus-driven outcomes over a period of time. While other medical professions have adopted this process it is new to physical therapist education programs. The purpose of this manuscript is …

Factors Affecting The Questioning Ability Of Neophyte Undergraduate Nursing Students In The Classroom, Muhammad Ishtiaq, Raisa Gul Jan 2024

Factors Affecting The Questioning Ability Of Neophyte Undergraduate Nursing Students In The Classroom, Muhammad Ishtiaq, Raisa Gul

Health Professions Education

Questioning is one of the most commonly used strategies in the instructional process. Well-constructed and appropriate levels of questions stimulate imagination, ignite curiosity, and promote critical thinking. Questioning is an important academic tool in all disciplines but it is more significant for healthcare disciplines for making decisions impacting life and death situations. A grey zone exists on facilitative and hindering factors for asking questions during the instruction deliberations. This study aimed to explore the students’ perspective on the significance of asking questions and the factors affecting their ability to ask questions in a classroom setting. A descriptive qualitative study recruited …
