Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Schools are an important setting for the early identification, assessment and intervention of mental health problems in children and young people. Internationally, many nurses work in schools, but the role of this group with young people experiencing mental health problems has had only limited investigation. This study explored the activities school nurses undertook with young people experiencing mental health problems in Australia. Reporting was guided by the COREQ checklist. Thirty-one nurses participated in a semi-structured interview. Data were analysed using the constant comparative method of analysis as developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967). The findings identified that nurses working in …

Value Co-Creation Through Digital Channels Influencing Purchase Intention In Confectionery Food Service Businesses, Maria Mikaela Joyce C. Sava, Marc Immanuel G. Isip, Maria Liezel C. Eusebio
Journal Article
This study introduces the concept of online co-creation as a probable resource-sharing strategy, which recognizes the evolving role of customers in the value chain. These customers provide valuable information that enhances knowledge and capabilities in the organization’s processes. Despite the growing interest in value co-creation in recent years, much remains to be explored on how it manifests in industry-specific and cultural contexts, specifically in the Philippine confectionery industry, which constitutes a significant sector that drives the foodservice industry in the country. The study tests a developed conceptual model that involves value co-creation and its influence on purchase intention; importantly, this …

Service-Learning And Student Success: Are Underrepresented Students Gaining The Same Benefits?, Sondra Bellard
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Service-learning (SL) has increasingly been used as an educational tool based on the theory of experiential learning, which states that knowledge is developed through experience (Kohl, 1984). SL provides students with the opportunity to connect course work to the community leading to a better understanding of the content. Previous research has shown that SL is associated with positive academic, social, and civic outcomes. However, many of the previous studies fail to provide demographic information on the participants, specifically their ethnicities. There has also been a lack of quantitative studies that examine how first-generation students perceive SL and its benefits. The …

Impact Of Dual Enrollment Program Models On College Student Readiness, Persistence, And Retention In Secondary And Post-Secondary Environments, Sharon K. Komanecky
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Dual enrollment programming has grown extensively since inception in the 1970s. Student academic achievement is the forefront of secondary and post-secondary education, but minimal research has been conducted regarding models of dual enrollment or concurrent enrollment programs in higher education. Thus, this study examined the perceptions of secondary and post-secondary educators on the impact of dual enrollment program models on college student readiness, persistence, and retention. This quantitative cross-sectional correlational study utilized a survey to collect data (n=102) from secondary and post-secondary educators who serve in a capacity with dual enrollment programs in a Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) district …
Enhancing The Bandwidth And Radiation Characteristics Of Size-Reduced Antennas, Jack P. Nemec
Enhancing The Bandwidth And Radiation Characteristics Of Size-Reduced Antennas, Jack P. Nemec
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Electrically small antennas are researched heavily throughout electromagnetic literature due to their practicality. Antennas need to be able to fit into small places such as cell phones. However, the reduction of antenna size comes at a cost in decreasing the impedance bandwidth and radiation efficiency of the antenna. This research aims to find solutions to having sized-reduced antennas while enhancing both the impedance bandwidth and radiation characteristics of the antenna. First, the size reduction of a dual-element dipole is analyzed. Dual-element dipoles are known to have impedance bandwidth enhancing properties along with the ability to have different radiation modes. Next, …

Understanding The Role Of Cultural Competence In Peer Mentorship Programs For International Students: A Student Development Theory Perspective, Nikheal Patel, Daniel Calhoun, Steven Tolman
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
International students often face challenges while pursuing higher education in a foreign country. These challenges can negatively impact their sense of belonging and community, resulting in social disconnection. Examining the role of culturally competent peer mentoring programs for international students can foster a sense of belonging among international students. Peer mentorship may provide international students with a supportive environment and community, helping them navigate university life. In contrast, student development theory can inform the design of programs and services that support international students in their transition to American higher education. These strategies can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment …

Enhancing College Students’ Eaccessibility In Higher Education: Transfer Students And Transfer Admissions Counselors' Perspectives, Sevinj Iskandarova, Margaret F. Sloan
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
There is a paucity of research on institutional e-accessibility and transfer-credit-software adoption. This paucity poses a challenge in understanding how these technologies impact college students and professionals. Drawing on connectivism theory and Karp and Fletcher's (2014) and Kezar's (2013) three-way approaches (changing-in-advice, institutions, and students' willingness to use technology tools) investigate how technology product adoption affects students' and transfer admission counselors' experiences during the transfer process. This study, conducted at a public institution in the mid-east Atlantic region, utilized a convergent-parallel mixed-methods design to assess students' and professionals' perceptions of transfer credit evaluation products. Results indicate that an e-transfer system …

The species-specific migratory patterns and strategies of many songbirds remain unknown or understudied, as research in animal ecology is biased toward the breeding period, with the fewest studies on the migratory period across taxa. Identifying large-scale spatiotemporal migratory patterns is challenging, as individuals within a species may vary in their migratory behavior and strategies. The Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia) is a Nearctic-Neotropical migrant that is relatively well studied during the breeding season, but its species-wide migratory patterns remain understudied. Our aim in studying Yellow Warbler movement ecology was to characterize temporal migration patterns during fall migration. We sought to determine …

An estimated six million of over 31 million children under five years old are at risk of not reaching their full developmental potential in Nigeria. There is a need for culturally appropriate and context-specific measures to track child development and facilitate intervention planning. This study assessed the utility of the Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI), see Table 1, used in the 2016/2017 round of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) to track development among 3- to 4-year-old children (n=11,073; 3-year-old, 51%; female, 49%).

Vehicular Traffic Flow Prediction Via Decentralized Federated Meta-Learning, Andrew Selvia, Ankur Singh, Wencen Wu
Vehicular Traffic Flow Prediction Via Decentralized Federated Meta-Learning, Andrew Selvia, Ankur Singh, Wencen Wu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Traffic flow prediction (TFP) has become a crucial problem for billions of people who rely on traffic predictions to optimize their travels every day. In this paper, we present a decentralized federated meta-learning (DFML) framework for traffic flow prediction. Within this framework, traffic detectors spread across a road system can form federations with nearby peers in order to predict traffic collaboratively. A node that assembles a federation assumes the role of receiver while the remainder are assigned as broadcasters. The broadcasters learn model parameters from local data and then broadcast those models to receivers, thereby enriching the available information from …

True Grit: Exploring Nonprofit Sector Resilience Following Economic Recessions, Xintong Chen, Kerry Kuenzi, Lindsey Evans, Amanda Stewart
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The nonprofit sector has been portrayed as resilient, describing a sector that persists despite challenges. We investigate nonprofit resiliency by examining how organizational characteristics, strategies, and community factors equipped organizations to recover following economic recessions. Utilizing a fixed effects panel regression model, our study covers a period of 29 years (1989–2018), encompassing three economic crises in the United States. The primary focus is examining the sector’s financial health and the resilience of the constituent organizations. Our findings describe a sector buoyed by the resilience of larger and older organizations, earned revenue, and contribution revenue, as well as the role of …

Seabird-vessel interactions are often studied through the lens of fisheries bycatch, but seabirds encounter many watercraft types. Western Gulls Larus occidentalis breeding on the Farallon Islands (California, USA) have a foraging domain that encompasses both shipping lanes and productive fishing grounds, resulting in ample opportunities for vessel encounters. Previous research showed that these Western Gulls can serve as ecosystem indicators because their foraging behavior is linked to ocean prey conditions, and because their foraging grounds overlap with that of Humpback Whales Megaptera novaeangliae, which can make prey accessible. Because ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear are concerns for whales …

Tiktok As Social Communication Tool To Encourage Participation In Volunteering Projects, Belén Moreno-Albarracín, Tania Blanco-Sánchez
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Social media are regarded as tools of communication and social influence. Notwithstanding this, TikTok’s majority audience in 2023 is made up of members of generations Z and Alpha, associated in previous studies with a participatory crisis. Given this contradiction, a research question is proposed: do young people use TikTok to consolidate social values such as solidarity? To answer it, the main objective is to analyse the use of TikTok as an instrument for youth participation in volunteer projects. A mixed methodology is used, based on a content analysis of the 150 videos uploaded to TikTok with the hashtag #voluntariado and …

Improving Field Education For Social Work In Vietnam: Intern Supervisors’ Perspectives Of The Current State And Potential Solutions, Megan Aikawa, Meekyung Han, Trang T. Nguyen, Linh Dinh, Minh Thanh Bui
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Research has identified challenges associated with the implementation of competency-based social work field education in Vietnam. However, there is limited information available from intern supervisors, who have unique perspectives at the crux of social work training and service delivery. An exploratory phenomenological qualitative approach was used to explore their experiences and perceptions through online interviews. Four categories were identified: diverse implementation of a common framework, rudimentary expectations and activities, challenges to implementation, and opportunities for improvement. These findings suggest that a multidimensional approach is needed, including improved collaborations between field agencies and universities to empower students, intern supervisors, and faculty.

Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UASs) are being utilized throughout the disaster and emergency response domain, including in wildland firefighting operations. While UASs can offer safety benefits in comparison to crewed aircraft, such as removing the human pilot from the vehicle so that they are not exposed to the same risks and the ability to operate in low-visibility conditions, they are not without tradeoffs. For example, it can be challenging for UAS pilots (UASPs) to build situation awareness of the airspace in which their UAS is operating. In order to address some of the challenges associated with using UASs and provide greater …

Understanding timing and distribution of virus spread is critical to global commercial and wildlife biosecurity management. A highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIv) global panzootic, affecting 600 bird and mammal species globally and over 83 million birds across North America (December 2023), poses a serious global threat to animals and public health. We combined a large, long-term waterfowl GPS tracking dataset (16 species) with on-ground disease surveillance data (county-level HPAIv detections) to create a novel empirical model that evaluated spatiotemporal exposure and predicted future spread and potential arrival of HPAIv via GPS tracked migratory waterfowl through 2022. Our model was …
