Tiktok As Social Communication Tool To Encourage Participation In Volunteering Projects, Belén Moreno-Albarracín, Tania Blanco-Sánchez Jan 2024

Tiktok As Social Communication Tool To Encourage Participation In Volunteering Projects, Belén Moreno-Albarracín, Tania Blanco-Sánchez

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Social media are regarded as tools of communication and social influence. Notwithstanding this, TikTok’s majority audience in 2023 is made up of members of generations Z and Alpha, associated in previous studies with a participatory crisis. Given this contradiction, a research question is proposed: do young people use TikTok to consolidate social values such as solidarity? To answer it, the main objective is to analyse the use of TikTok as an instrument for youth participation in volunteer projects. A mixed methodology is used, based on a content analysis of the 150 videos uploaded to TikTok with the hashtag #voluntariado and …

True Grit: Exploring Nonprofit Sector Resilience Following Economic Recessions, Xintong Chen, Kerry Kuenzi, Lindsey Evans, Amanda Stewart

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The nonprofit sector has been portrayed as resilient, describing a sector that persists despite challenges. We investigate nonprofit resiliency by examining how organizational characteristics, strategies, and community factors equipped organizations to recover following economic recessions. Utilizing a fixed effects panel regression model, our study covers a period of 29 years (1989–2018), encompassing three economic crises in the United States. The primary focus is examining the sector’s financial health and the resilience of the constituent organizations. Our findings describe a sector buoyed by the resilience of larger and older organizations, earned revenue, and contribution revenue, as well as the role of …

Salt marshes exist at the terrestrial-marine interface, providing important ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. Tidal inputs play a dominant role in salt marsh porewater mixing, and terrestrially derived freshwater inputs are increasingly recognized as important sources of water and solutes to intertidal wetlands. However, there remains a critical gap in understanding the role of freshwater inputs on salt marsh hydrology, and how this may impact marsh subsurface salinity and plant productivity. Here, we address this knowledge gap by examining the hydrologic behavior, porewater salinity, and pickleweed (Sarcocornia pacifica also known as Salicornia pacifica) plant productivity along …

Algorithmic Embeddedness And The ‘Gig’ Characteristics Model: Examining The Interplay Between Technology And Work Design In Crowdwork, Francesca Bellesia, Elisa Mattarelli, Fabiola Bertolotti, Maurizio Sobrero

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This article systematically reviews the literature on online task crowdwork to investigate the complex relationship between technology and work design on crowdwork platforms. We highlight the diverse interpretations and uses of technology, specifically platform features and algorithms, in relation to work design. Our review reveals that platform features serve as antecedents to work design characteristics, while algorithms are so intertwined with job execution that a new work characteristic is needed to model this interplay. We introduce this new work characteristic as algorithmic embeddedness and show that it varies in degree. When high, algorithmic embeddedness can be perceived as either an …

Assessment Of Digital Collaboration Skills, Esperanza Huerta, Ana Lidia Franzoni Velázquez, Scott Jensen Jan 2024

Assessment Of Digital Collaboration Skills, Esperanza Huerta, Ana Lidia Franzoni Velázquez, Scott Jensen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This exploratory study proposes a methodology for assessing digital collaboration skills based on the students' actual behavior. Students' comments using a digital collaboration tool during a one-month long project were manually coded. This methodology is not context specific and can be used across different domains. This assessment contrasts with self-reported measures in which students rate themselves as already possessing collaboration skills. Finally, the study explores the use of generative AI to automatically code student's comments to alleviate the labor-intensive process that coding requires and to enable scalability in coding data.

Is Knowledge Management (Finally) Extractive? – Fuller’S Argument Revisited In The Age Of Ai, Norman Mooradian Jan 2024

Is Knowledge Management (Finally) Extractive? – Fuller’S Argument Revisited In The Age Of Ai, Norman Mooradian

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Aim/Purpose The rise of modern artificial intelligence (AI), in particular, machine learning (ML), has provided new opportunities and directions for knowledge management (KM). A central question for the future of KM is whether it will be dominated by an automation strategy that replaces knowledge work or whether it will support a knowledge-enablement strategy that enhances knowledge work and uplifts knowledge workers. This paper addresses this question by re-examining and updating a critical argument against KM by the sociologist of science Steve Fuller (2002), who held that KM was extractive and exploitative from its origins. Background This paper re-examines Fuller’s argument …

Emerging Influence Of The Rmb On Currency Markets In A Transpiring Tri‐Polar International Monetary System, Ping Wang, Peijie Wang

Plymouth Business School

The up-and-coming influence of the RMB on currency co-movements isexamined in this paper, in the context of a transpiring tri-polar international monetarysystem advocated in prior studies. The study is empirically conducted against thebackdrop of a more variable RMB exchange rate regime, which enables the integrationof the RMB into the international monetary system. The influence of the RMB is foundmost evident in Asia, being modest in Latin America while reaching Africa. The RMBco-moves most with the currencies of countries that have large shares in trade with Chinaconsiderably. Meanwhile, a residual-based instrumental variables model is proposed inthis study purposely for dealing with …

The Relationship Between Firm-Level Climate Change Exposure, Financial Integration, Cost Of Capital And Investment Efficiency, Konstantina K. Agoraki, Maria Giaka, Dimitrios Konstantios, Ioannis Negkakis

Plymouth Business School

This paper investigates the impact of firm-level climate change exposure on corporate cost of capital, growth opportunities and new investment across 67 countries with varying degrees of financial integration from 2002 to 2021. The analysis documents that firms with high climate change exposure have a negative outlook, face increased cost of capital, and have reduced investment activity. Moreover, firms with climate change exposure are characterised by investment inefficiency and slower speed of adjustment towards the target investment. These findings become more pronounced for companies which operate in countries with high levels of financial integration. Our results are robust to alternative …

This study tests the impact of the tourism demarketing mix (product, price, place, promotion) on tourists’ intention to reduce revisits to nature reserves in Egypt. In particular, this work focuses on the moderating role of switching cost. Data were collected from 401 tourists of the Wadi Degla and Petrified Forest nature reserves in Egypt. Path analysis is employed to test the research hypotheses using WarpPLS 6. Findings confirm that the tourism demarketing mix significantly affects tourists’ perception and intention to reduce revisits to the nature reserves. Lower switching cost partially enhanced the relationship between the tourism demarketing mix and tourists’ …

Physiological Evidence Of Escalating Stress During Covid-19: A Longitudinal Assessment Of Child Welfare Workers, Austin Griffiths, Kim Link, Kara Haughtigan, Oliver W.J. Beer, Lindsey Powell, David Royse Jan 2024

Physiological Evidence Of Escalating Stress During Covid-19: A Longitudinal Assessment Of Child Welfare Workers, Austin Griffiths, Kim Link, Kara Haughtigan, Oliver W.J. Beer, Lindsey Powell, David Royse

School of Health Professions

Studies have shown that stress has contributed to employee turnover and retention problems for agencies, and at the individual level, chronic stress has been associated with coronary heart disease, anxiety, depression, and many other negative effects. In the past, the extent of stress one has felt has been measured by subjective paper-and-pencil instruments; however, recent technological advances have improved our ability to obtain accurate biofeedback assessments from wearable instruments. The Kentucky Child Welfare Workforce Wellness Initiative is the first known study to explore physiological stress in a sample (n = 32) of child welfare professionals using biometric technology (Firstbeat Bodyguard …

Navigating The Complexity Of Applying Nutrition Evidence To Individualised Care: Summary Of An Academy Of Nutrition Sciences Position Paper, Judith Buttriss, Mary Hickson, Kevin Whelan, Christine Williams

School of Health Professions

Diet is key to the maintenance of health and crucial in the prevention and management of many diseases. Modified nutrient intake may become essential to prevent deficiency, optimise development and health or manage symptoms and disease progression. Adding to the complexity, disease and its treatment can also affect taste, appetite and ability to access and prepare foods. Coupled with this, individual requirements for energy, macronutrients and micronutrients are influenced by factors such as life stage (age, growth, pregnancy, etc.) and health status, which can affect the processes of consuming, digesting, absorbing, metabolising or excreting nutrients. First and foremost, dietary advice …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, we present the development of a driving education prototype simulator, aiming to address dangerous traffic situations frequently encountered in daily life, particularly in urban areas like Klang Valley, Malaysia. Our initial driving simulator version focused on track-based training tailored to Malaysian driving exams, but we recognized its limitations in preparing learner drivers for real-world challenges due to the lack of risk. To add the value of study to our project, we designed three scenarios based on common dangerous situations observed in dashboard camera (dashcam) footage from Malaysian drivers. Due to the lack of reliable openly discussed methods …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Blooms of microalgal red tides and macroalgae (e.g., green and golden tides caused by Ulva and Sargassum) have caused widespread problems around China in recent years, but there is uncertainty around what triggers these blooms and how they interact. Here, we use 30 years of monitoring data to help answer these questions, focusing on the four main species of microalgae Prorocentrum donghaiense, Karenia mikimotoi, Noctiluca scintillans, and Skeletonema costatum) associated with red tides in the region. The frequency of red tides increased from 1991 to 2003 and then decreased until 2020, with S. costatum red tides exhibiting the highest rate …

The Application Of Protease In Aquaculture: Prospects For Enhancing The Aquafeed Industry, Shiyou Chen, Sahya Maulu, Jie Wang, Xiaoze Xie, Xiaofang Liang, Hao Wang, Junjun Wang, Min Xue

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Low-fishmeal and protein-saving diets are two prominent nutritional strategies utilized to address challenges related to the scarcity and sustainability of protein sources in aquaculture. However, these diets have been associated with adverse effects on the growth performance, feed utilization, and disease resistance of aquatic animals. To mitigate these challenges, exogenous protease has been applied to enhance the quality of diets with lower protein contents or fishmeal alternatives, thereby improving the bioavailability of nutritional ingredients. Additionally, protease preparations were also used to enzymatically hydrolyze fishmeal alternatives, thus enhancing their nutritional utilization. The present review aims to consolidate recent research progress on …

Coattailing For Regime Continuity?: Unraveling Duterte's Legacy In Marcos Jr.'S 2022 Electoral Victory, Gabrielle Ann S. Mendoza, Imelda B. Deinla, Cristine Lian C. Domingo, Jurel K. Yap

Ateneo School of Government Publications

The electoral victory of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has been attributed to a range of factors such as misinformation, patronage, and populism. We argue that Marcos’ electoral victory should not be treated as an isolated instantaneous event, but rather a result of a shift in the country's political narrative due to the legacy of his predecessor. The shift to illiberal populism is tied to the public's continued support for Duterte's flagship policies as well as in the proliferation of populist rhetoric on social media. Using a non-probability survey of 1500 Filipinos, we find that support for President Duterte and his …

The Need For A United States National Antiquities Database: A Valuable Suggestion From The Nicosia Convention, Sula, Dea Jan 2024

The Need For A United States National Antiquities Database: A Valuable Suggestion From The Nicosia Convention, Sula, Dea

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Antiquities trafficking is an international cultural and security risk due to the involvement of organized crime. The Nicosia Convention proposes utilization of shared national databases cataloging antiquities as a method to combat the antiquities black market. The United States should adopt this database recommendation. A comprehensive database of antiquities in the U.S. is technically feasible. Further, a database would strengthen American criminal law by creating evidence that a buyer could have notice and knowledge of the status of a trafficked antiquity, the lack of which currently incentivizes authorities to use civil forfeiture actions instead of criminal prosecution. Implementing an antiquities …

Esg Investing: Government Push Or Market Pull?, Mendenhall, Allen, Sutter, Daniel

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

This Article documents various government actions driving the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) movement to offer perspective on the debate regarding whether markets or governments propel ESG. These include mandating an energy transition; promulgating laws, rules, and directives compelling ESG reporting; and providing generous tax incentives and financial subsidies. We document the government push for ESG in the United States, Europe, and other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations, and by international financial institutions. We do not deny that many investors across the globe are interested in ESG as opposed to only private returns. However, the breadth and …

Cruel And Unusual Punishment: A Human Rights-Based Argument For Extending The Eighth Amendment To Capital Punishment Methods, Brittany Walker Jan 2024

Cruel And Unusual Punishment: A Human Rights-Based Argument For Extending The Eighth Amendment To Capital Punishment Methods, Brittany Walker

Human Rights Brief

Though Americans generally support capital punishment, there are many issues with how states currently choose to execute individuals, including concern that the different execution methods used by states to carry out capital punishment violates the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, lack of regulation of states and lack of accountability. Further, certain execution methods may violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This article suggests recommendations for state legislatures, the United States Congress, and the Supreme Court for ensuring the humane treatment of individuals during an execution.
