A Theory-Derived Mmpi-2/Mmpi-2-Rf Scale Of Suicidality, Catherine A. Ebarb
A Theory-Derived Mmpi-2/Mmpi-2-Rf Scale Of Suicidality, Catherine A. Ebarb
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Clinicians and researchers have routinely searched for better ways to identify suicidal behaviors before an attempt to end ones life can occur. Decades of research have studied the question of what predisposes a person to suicidal behaviors and taking their own life. Researchers have sought to examine ways to capture these risk factors and features of suicidal behavior through assessment. Although various suicidal behavior measures exist, many of them only capture a snapshot view of suicidal risk. In addition, some measures in use are not derived from the most recent theories on suicidal behavior, which have expanded the understanding of …

A Novel Method For Time-Based Synchronization Of Acquired Force And Motion Data, Darnisha Detraniece Crane
Theses
Enhancing the performance of flapping wing micro air vehicles hinges upon a thorough comprehension of the intricate interplay between wing kinematics and resulting forces. This understanding necessitates a method of synchronization capable of establishing a precise correlation of wing motion and force generation. The objective of this project is to develop a time-based synchronization method using existing hardware in the ATOM lab. Algorithms were developed to control the Vicon motion-tracking system and the ATI force sensor to achieve the synchronization of acquired data. Experimental testing was conducted to validate the algorithms and system architecture. Results from testing revealed a time …
Reduction Of Cognitive Load In Immersive Virtual Reality With Multisensory Cues, Daniel Wilson
Reduction Of Cognitive Load In Immersive Virtual Reality With Multisensory Cues, Daniel Wilson
Theses
This study investigated the effects of multimodal interfaces and immersive virtual environments on cognitive load. Participants played a first-person target shooting game with either a virtual reality headset or on a monitor, using visual, auditory-visual, and a haptic-visual interfaces. Performance and self-reported data about cognitive load and spatial presence were collected for each interface. The study found that both immersive environments and multimodal interfaces reduced cognitive load. Additionally, an interaction was seen such that multimodal interfaces were more effective at reducing cognitive load in immersive environments. These findings indicate that the addition of more modalities into interfaces, especially in highly …
The Design, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Hybrid Sensemaking Tool Combining Traditional Physical Devices With Augmented Reality, Kaden Gryphon
The Design, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Hybrid Sensemaking Tool Combining Traditional Physical Devices With Augmented Reality, Kaden Gryphon
Theses
This thesis is about our work integrating traditional devices, for example, mobile and stationary displays, into an augmented reality (AR) tool for analyzing data during sensemaking tasks. We create a framework for breaking down analysis tasks into three steps. Using our framework we design and implement the AR bulletin board (ARBB).We conduct a user study to evaluate ARBB, using the results and user feedback to create design implications. Our study supports that having a physical device helps users complete interactions faster, and users are more likely to use the tools during sensemaking to create more complex organizations.
Data Remanence Vulnerabilities In Embedded Sram At Low Temperature, Farzana Hoque
Data Remanence Vulnerabilities In Embedded Sram At Low Temperature, Farzana Hoque
Theses
Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) memory is prevalent as cache memory in computing platforms and embedded systems. SRAM frequently stores essential information such as cryptographic keys, passwords, and other confidential data. Consequently, a data remanence-based attack on SRAM can result in significant damage. When power is removed, SRAM gradually loses data rather than immediately, especially at lower temperatures. This phenomenon, known as data remanence, poses a significant security risk, as it can be exploited through cold boot attacks targeting encryption keys and other sensitive data. Understanding temperature-induced vulnerabilities in embedded SRAM is crucial for enhancing the security and reliability of …
Potential Mechanisms Maintaining A Conspicuous Polymorphism In Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Katelyn Giltner
Potential Mechanisms Maintaining A Conspicuous Polymorphism In Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Katelyn Giltner
Theses
Genetic variation often precedes adaptation, so the mechanisms that maintain this variation are a central topic in evolutionary biology. Gambusia holbrooki, or eastern mosquitofish, possesses a rare polymorphism for melanistic coloration. Melanics and typical silver males were examined for differences in behavioral and physiological traits that may impact the persistence of the melanism trait. No differences in standard metabolic rate were found via closed-chamber respirometry, but a detour task indicated that melanic males possess greater cognitive flexibility. Effects of the social environment on stress and reproductive traits were also evaluated by pairing males and comparing cortisol levels and sperm quality …
Aerodynamic Losses Of Additively Manufactured Blades In Transonic Conditions With Different Surface Treatments, Chase Allen Herrin
Aerodynamic Losses Of Additively Manufactured Blades In Transonic Conditions With Different Surface Treatments, Chase Allen Herrin
Theses
Additive manufacturing (AM) allows the production of high strength and high temperature alloys to increase the operational temperature of turbines and other engine components. AM inherently has high surface texturing, inclusive of waviness due to the layering effect in the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process, and roughness due to surface defects such as partially sintered powder, deep notches, and micro-cracks. This thesis investigates how different surface treatments affect the surface static pressure variations and wake aerodynamic loss characteristics for each blade. A supersonic transonic blow down wind tunnel with a linear cascade test section is used to acquire this …

Constructing Other Worlds: An Intertextual Analysis Of Cow Eye Press, Adrian Jones Pearson And The Works Of A.J. Perry, James A. Galliher
Theses
Cow Eye Press, A.J. Perry, and the pseudonymous Adrian Jones Pearson have largely been ignored by academics. Between 2001 and 2021, Perry composed a collection of texts which this study calls the Cow Eye Project. The project received brief attention when critics and journalists began comparing Pearson to Thomas Pynchon. However, the online spectacle overshadowed engagement with the texts themselves. This thesis exists to document the project and foreground Perry’s works on their own merits to examine their value and position within contemporary American literature. Previous scholars have treated the texts individually. This thesis argues that the central texts of …
Grating Lobe Suppression Techniques In Sparse Linear And Planar Phased Array Antennas With Reconfigurable Phasor Elements, William M. Current
Grating Lobe Suppression Techniques In Sparse Linear And Planar Phased Array Antennas With Reconfigurable Phasor Elements, William M. Current
Theses
With the continual increase in the need for wireless communications, there comes a desire to decrease fabrication costs. One of the primary drivers for the cost of an antenna array is the actual number of antennas used. This number, however, can only be decreased so far for a fixed aperture area without causing undesired secondary main beams, grating lobes, to appear in the radiation pattern. This work aims to analyze the results of two methods for reducing these grating lobes in sparse, scanning phased array antennas. Both of these methods are based upon dual-mode antenna elements, as opposed to single-mode …

An Evaluation Of Social Media Use And Its Association With Nutrition Behaviors Among Female Parents, Meredith St. Cyr
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Recent studies have indicated that an unhealthy diet plays a role in the development of overweight and obesity, which are among the most severe public health challenges of the 21st century. One population that has become an emerging focus is female parents aged 21 – 35. Research has demonstrated that the transition to parenthood and the years following are often a turning point regarding developing obesity and that early effects on weight gain are likely to be cumulative and persistent. A unique characteristic of this population is their high utilization of social media. This study utilized a mixed methods study …
The Development And Validation Of A Novel Patient-Derived 3d Meningioma Cell Culture Model, Laurien Lisette Van De Weijer
The Development And Validation Of A Novel Patient-Derived 3d Meningioma Cell Culture Model, Laurien Lisette Van De Weijer
Peninsula Medical School Theses
Meningiomas are the most frequent intracranial brain tumours. Current treatment options of surgery and radiotherapy are sometimes insufficient and effective systemic therapies remain unestablished. The development of accurate in vitro systems to model the complexity of meningioma pathology is essential for predicting drug response and developing novel therapeutics. Therefore, in this study, I established an easy-to-use in vitro patient-derived meningioma spheroid model that maintained the morphological and molecular features of the parental tumours, including tissue histology, the tumour microenvironment, and the mutational profile. Comprehensive characterisation of the global transcriptomes of the novel patient-derived spheroids with traditional meningioma monolayer cultures and …
Pre-Clinical Targets For Ischemic Brain Injury, Daniel Morgan
Pre-Clinical Targets For Ischemic Brain Injury, Daniel Morgan
Peninsula Medical School Theses
Stroke is the second most common cause of disability worldwide, and 87% of strokes result from a blockage in the cerebral blood flow which results in ischemia. Injury to the myelinated axons located in white matter is observed in ischemic injuries but is generally underappreciated. Research has shown that there is extensive vesicular glutamate release during ischemia, causing excitotoxic injury to oligodendrocytes, resulting in demyelination. Glutamate receptor antagonists have been trialled in stroke patients but fall short due to adverse side effects from high dose preparations. Stroke is largely a disease of ageing, and may occur in the presence of …

Internal And Social Sources Shape Judgments About The Mental And Physical Nature Of An Experience, Jacinth Jia Xin Tan, Alexander Karan, Dolores Albarracin
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Although humans are intuitive dualists, little is known about whether they hold lay beliefs about the origins or sources of their intuitive perceptions of what is physical and what is mental. Drawing on theories of the sources of phenomenological experiences, we examined if people hold beliefs about the internal and social origins of judments that their experiences are physical or mental. In Study 1, participants provided physical or mental judgments about a range of personal experiences, and reported relying on both internal (i.e., examining own body and thoughts) and social (i.e., observing others) sources as information for their judgments. To …
Leveraging Instagram To Enhance Self-Esteem: A Self-Affirmative Intervention Study And Multilevel Mediation Analysis, Shuna Shiann Khoo, Hwajin Yang, Wei Xing Toh
Leveraging Instagram To Enhance Self-Esteem: A Self-Affirmative Intervention Study And Multilevel Mediation Analysis, Shuna Shiann Khoo, Hwajin Yang, Wei Xing Toh
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Although studies have consistently indicated that heavier use of social networking sites (SNS) perpetuates poorer self-esteem outcomes, no study has examined potential intervention methods that can yield positive effects from SNS use. We hypothesized that viewing one's Instagram profile would have self-affirmative effects on self-perception because the profile typically showcases curated instrumental positive aspects of self. Furthermore, these self-affirmative effects would indirectly improve state self-esteem via enhanced clarity of self-concept. To test our hypothesis, we designed an experimental intervention study where one group viewed their Instagram profile regularly, while another group viewed a neutral abstract art profile. Using multilevel latent …

A Case Report: Regenerative And Robotic Rehabilitation In A Patient With Chronic Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy, Chieh Chen, Sun-Hui Tseng
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) occurs when the brain is deprived of sufficient oxygen or blood flow, resulting in brain dysfunction. According to the relevant literature, no curative therapies are currently available for HIE-related lifelong disabilities. Regenerative rehabilitation employs regenerative technologies and cell therapy combined with conventional therapeutic exercises to restore normal function. This study used robotic-assisted gait training with the Lokomat and two infusions of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) to treat an adolescent with chronic HIE. At the seven-month follow-up assessment, we determined that the patient’s motor function had improved based on the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88) …

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
We make the case for building a permanent public-use platform for conducting and analyzing immersive interviews on the everyday lives of Americans. The American Voices Project (AVP)—a widely watched experiment with this new platform—provides important early evidence on its promise. The articles in this issue reveal that, although public-use interview datasets obviously cannot meet all research needs, they do provide new opportunities to study small or hidden populations, new or emerging social problems, reactions to ongoing social crises, submerged values and attitudes, and many other aspects of American life. We conclude that a permanent AVP platform would help build an …

Display Of Battery Items In Web And Mail Surveys: Grids Versus Item-By-Item And Radio Versus Wide Buttons, Kristen M. Olson, Jolene D. Smyth, Angelica Phillips
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
How to display questions that are part of a battery in self-administered surveys is an important decision. Battery items may be displayed in a grid in a mail survey or computer web survey, but are often displayed as individual items on mobile devices. Although past research has com-pared grids to item-by-item displays in computer and mobile web surveys, almost no work has compared these displays in mail surveys. Additionally, many web survey templates use wide rectangular buttons to select response options in individual items using a mobile-optimized design, different from the standard round answer space format typically used in mail …

Remember, You Can Complete This Survey Online! Web Survey Links And Qr Codes In A Mixed-Mode Web And Mail General Population Survey, Kristen M. Olson, Amanda Ganshert
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Recruitment materials for concurrent mixed-mode self-administered web and mail surveys must communi-cate information about multiple modes simultaneously. Providing the link to the web survey on the cover of the paper questionnaire or including a QR code to access the web survey may increase the visibility of the web mode and thus increase the proportion of people who participate via the web, but whether including either piece of information does so has received surprisingly little empirical attention. In this paper, we exam-ine the results of experiments embedded in two general population probability-based concurrent mixed-mode surveys of Nebraska adults. First, in the …

Use Of Online Hybrid Supplemental Teaching In Field-Based Teacher Education Programs, Hank Bohanon, Wenjin Guo, Christopher Dickman
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
University faculty who implement field-based teacher education programs experience challenges providing instruction for clinical, site-embedded university-based students. These issues can include a lack of common times to meet with students, limited access to meeting space to provide direct instruction, and changes in the school schedule. A number of these barriers may be addressed by adding elements of online instruction to traditional in-person classes, making the course, in effect, a hybrid one. In this study, the researchers analyzed the perspectives of university-based, special education focused instructors and clinical partners on the barriers, needs, benefits, and content related to implementing hybrid instruction …
