No. 31: Precarity, Food Insecurity, And Migration: The Kerala-Gulf Nexus And Women Domestic Workers, Anand Panamthottam Cherian

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

Low-skilled Malayali women migrants employed as domestic laborers in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)1 countries navigate a transnational labor system that entrenches gendered hierarchies and structural inequalities. Ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Kerala and the United Arab Emirates utilizing biographical methods such as life history and oral history reveals that migration, often envisioned as a pathway to economic security, intensifies vulnerabilities through layers of exclusion, exploitation, and deprivation. These women’s lived experiences underscore the precarious conditions that define their labor trajectories, shaped by systemic governance failures and socio-cultural dynamics.

Food security, positioned at the nexus of material survival and symbolic significance, emerges …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Soft Power On The Risk Of Foreign Direct Investment Projects, Kelly Montemayor Dec 2024

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Soft Power On The Risk Of Foreign Direct Investment Projects, Kelly Montemayor

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

As the world has become more interconnected due to the rapid expansion of trade and communication technologies, countries have been able to create a reputation based on their image instead of their military power. This attraction or soft power, has become a topic of discussion as many scholars have tried to define soft power and the effects it has on the world. This research study focuses on how a country’s soft power affects the foreign direct investment projects it participates in based on the level of soft power its home country has over the host country. This study examines criteria …

Evaluating The Impact Of A One Day Resiliency Training Facilitation Program On Nurses' Wellbeing In An Acute Care Hospital, Amarachi Chidinma Eke-Okoro

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Nursing burnout is a significant problem with far-reaching consequences. High levels of stress, emotional exhaustion, and reduced job satisfaction among nurses contribute to poor patient outcomes, increased medical errors, and high turnover rates. There is a high prevalence of burnout among nurse executives, consequences of which include extreme stress, emotional anguish, and a desire to quit, which points to a larger problem with burnout affecting the nursing profession (Martin et al., 2023). Fostering resilience among nurses can help to mitigate these outcomes by enhancing physical, mental, and social health through building purpose, positive emotions, and effective stress management. …

Taking Up Space And Making Demands: Portland State University Students Construct The Free And Autonomous Refaat Alareer Memorial Library, Aaron Roussell, Anonymous

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Student campus protest has been a hallmark of US social movements for decades. Edited versions of these movements are lauded in university courses on historical social change. Yet a variety of commentators in traditional media, campus administration, and political administration display a calculated confusion when it comes to contemporary campus movements, particularly around Palestine. This article aims to clear up that confusion, outlining the protests and occupations that took place in spring 2024 on the campus of Portland State University and in its renamed Refaat Alareer Memorial Library, setting them in their national (and international) context, and outlining the violent …

Toward More Impactful Higher Education Advisory Boards: Foundational Elements For Success, Kyle Barnhart Dec 2024

Toward More Impactful Higher Education Advisory Boards: Foundational Elements For Success, Kyle Barnhart

Masters Projects

This project examines what makes for a successful advisory board within a higher education institution. Advisory boards play an important role in higher education, bringing industry insights, alumni experience, community connections, and outside expertise on a range of topics. A core challenge of advisory boards is a lack of consistency in their structure and operation which can result in these groups being less than effective or even perfunctory. This is a missed opportunity to engage volunteers, leverage outside expertise, and build important external connections, and develop long-term advocates. Poorly managed and ineffective boards can also be a drain on resources …

Artificial Intelligence And Its Influence In The Management Of Workforces, Caleb Brock Dec 2024

Artificial Intelligence And Its Influence In The Management Of Workforces, Caleb Brock

Research Awards

This study investigates the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Human Resources (HR) and workforce scheduling, emphasizing the rapid integration of AI into these domains. It explores the benefits and drawbacks of AI in HR recruiting and scheduling by comparing traditional methods with AI-driven approaches. While traditional recruitment practices, such as in-person interviews and resume evaluations, are effective, they often limit access to a broader candidate pool. AI can streamline these processes, enhancing efficiency, provided human oversight exists to mitigate biases and ensure accuracy.

Through a comprehensive literature review, this study reveals varying degrees of AI adoption across organizations and …

Correlation Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Dosage With Level Of Colonization, Nutrient Concentration, And Photosynthesis Pigment Of Cavendish Banana Plant, Muhammad Akhsan Akib, Nur Ilmi, Risnawati, Retno Prayudyaningsih, Syatrawati

Jurnal Kultivasi

The commercial development of Cavendish bananas still faces many obstacles, including the availability of seedlings/suckers at low prices, so technological substitution is needed to stimulate the growth of Cavendish banana suckers in the form of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) biological agents. The research aims to determine the correlation between AM doses and colonization levels, tissue nutrient concentrations, and photosynthetic pigments in Cavendish banana seedlings/suckers. It is also a novelty in this research study. The research was carried out in Parepare city at coordinates 3°59'30.204" S; 119°38'42.936" E using four AM doses as independent variables, namely 0 g, 5 g, 10 g, …

ABSTRACT

Mindfulness Matters: Addressing Anxiety and Navigating Toward Wellbeing Through MIEA Mindfulness Practices, a Mixed-Methods Study of LGBTIQ Graduate Writing Students

Anxiety has always been a part of the human experience, even before the phenomenon was conceptualized in the 17th century and named by Freud in the 19th. And human beings have devised many strategies for addressing anxiety: reducing it, ignoring it, distracting oneself from it, despairing over it, medicating it, engaging with it, moving through it, co-existing with it. The current zeitgeist, more than four years into the COVID-19 global pandemic, situates anxiety as a central facet of …
